Honestly, my biggest gripe with Miles wasn't so much about the character himself, it was about the complete lack of understanding by the writers. People don't like Spider-Man because he "does whatever a spider does", it is because people genuinely want Peter to succeed. Spidey does not have anywhere close to a top tier power set and has taken plenty of L's (in fights and in life). Yet, he gets by through intellect, heart and pure determination. To try to replace Peter Parker displays a complete disconnect from what made him the face of Marvel Comics in the first place. (BTW, as a kid, I used to see myself in a green-assed ninja turtle)

@@silverbullet537 I think Miles Morales is fine as a character. Wise-ass, naive young characters are actually pretty fun to read when given proper substance. For instance, having a pop who is a cop and a close uncle who is a criminal opens the potential for some incredible internal and external conflicts and a good launch point for a new character. It is just too bad that the writers, from what I can only assume, were too racist to think that he could stand on his own as an original hero.

Peter's quips were fun and funny..but as the age he was, they HAD to show examples of him being such a bullied kid and loner as to why he was such that way. For Miles, it makes sense just in itself. His story is about respcting peter. He wants to be something peter would be proud of. It would be different if he wanted to be better. Boasted about being better. Or never showed any respect to Peter, but he didn't. He literally becomes a superhero because he feels disappointed to have known Peter to be a hero when people needed him..and now peter isn't there. Peter was his main motivation. He could've easily became a villian in his own time. They did a rewrite of a hero the best possible way, and yall mad just cause he isn't white.

From what I have seen of Miles, he really does seem unoriginal in the comics. They just seem to give him everything Peter has. His costume looks like a black and red version of Peter's, he has the same name even now that he exists in the same world as Spider-Man, his love interest is Gwen Stacy (an alternate version but still) that is one of Peter's biggest love interests, he is now the focal point of Spider-Verse events when that used to be Peter (it originally revolved around the family of one of Peter's villains), he's made a deal with Mephisto and I actually saw an article where they were apparently going to make a Clone Saga for Miles. Hell, he's even jokey and lost his uncle, besides his race and two new powers, how is he different from Peter? Hell, from what little I have seen of Miles those two new powers seem like a crutch. I read the most recent Spider-Verse comic with Spider-Zero and most of the problems were solved by Miles' Venom Strike and cloaking. So basically he has nothing original to himself from what I have seen since he has Peter's super hero name, costume design, 99% of his powers, his love interest, his jokey personality and his mistakes, but the things that do make him unique seem like a crutch where he doesn't have to be smart or struggle, just turn invisible and taze someone with your fingers. I liked him in the movie and he seemed cool in the PS4 game (haven't seen or played the one centered on him) but with the comics it seems like they can't really do anything with him besides retreading Peter Parker. On the topic of alternate realities, I do actually really like them but I can definitely understand why you wouldn't. When used well, it can take characters in a completely different place that they couldn't go to in canon or you could get different versions of them which is my main interest in alternate universes, seeing how different an established character is. When used poorly, which seems to be a lot of these stories, it seems to just be the writer wanting to murder characters in horrible ways to be edgy. You'll have characters getting raped or turning into horrible villains or getting killed like a Mortal Kombat fatality or some shit. One alternate universe I can think of where it was needlessly gruesome was Marvel Zombies with Marvel Zombies Return. A zombie Spider-Man appears in a normal universe and loses control, slaughtering this universe's version of his villains with the exception of Sand Man who runs off. This reality's Spider-Man finds Sand Man and since he wasn't around to see what Zombie Spider-Man did, he just assumes Sand Man is running from the law and is being his jokey self, which pisses off Sand Man who thinks he's the same Spider-Man who just ate his friends. In response to this, he goes into Spider-Man's mouth and fills him with sand until he bursts....why couldn't he just beat him to death? It'd still be gruesome either way but at least it would make sense for Sand Man. Even being traumatized by watching a zombie kill his friends, why would his first thought be to enter his body to kill him from the inside? Needlessly gruesome. Similarly in Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe, he is needlessly gruesome in his killings. Why did he need to stab Daredevil in the eyes with his own Billy Clubs, why did he need to skin Beast and wear him as a coat, why did he need to hang X-23 and Draken or whatever his name is up and constantly burn them to keep them from regenerating instead of any other method to prevent this? Because some of these comic writers REALLY have a murder fetish and they can't do that to the main universe characters...well, they can, just not the big names. Event comics also seem to be a thing where their murder boners show up where they kill lesser characters or torture them. Why does Thor need to blast a hole in Goliath's chest, couldn't he just NEARLY kill him to show that something is wrong with Thor? Why did Elongated Man's wife need to be raped for the Justice League to decide to mind wipe him, he broke into their headquarters and had knowledge of their personal lives, he was already dangerous as is without the rape. Alternate universes should be used as either a what if to tell what would happen if a thing in the main universe went differently (like what if Peter stopped the criminal before he killed Uncle Ben) or go to crazy different realities where things are really different (like say Tangent where the world and super heroes are nowhere near the same as regular DC). There is no reason to make an alternate universe story just so you can write the character's getting raped, tortured, murdered or mutilated, just make your own dark, edgy, shitty comic that won't sell and leave DC and Marvel alone.

Thank you for saying this bro. Here is the thing people don't understand; Just because "diversifying" a character might be a success in one or two circumstances, doesn't mean it is proof that raceswapping or genderswapping a character is okay. It isn't. Miles could have been an original new black character, and if he was as well-written and well-executed as people claim Morales is, he would have still been a success. However the reality is, there is no way anybody can fundamentally prove that Miles's success wasn't just him piggybacking off of one of the most well-established and popular superhero identities of all time. And that's because they chose to make him Spider-Man, an attempt at diversifying the franchise instead of truly adding or expanding to it with something new. The undeserving success of Miles Morales creates a scapegoat in the eyes of SJW's to prove that replacing white characters with "diverse" ones is the right thing to do, and that anybody who opposes it is just a racist. Which as everybody here knows, just isn't reality.

I dont dislike Miles Morales, for me his character feels like Peter's because he idolizes him as a character(and most fans really want to act like their idols). Ever since I watched "Into the Spider-verse," I'd been trying to pinpoint why I didn't love the movie as much as everyone else, why I just couldn't accept this character. I think Rippa may have nailed it. Multi-verses are so obviously contrived for no other purpose but the pushing of an agenda, of bringing dead characters back to life or the forced introduction of an alternate (race, gender) version of a well-established character. Why couldn't Miles Morales be a DIFFERENT hero than Spider-man? Why can't he have some other cool power, and be called something else? Is an all new hero just too much of a challenge for creators, or too much of a risk to their bottom line?

I usually agree with you but you are wrong on this. Peter Parker has been run into the ground. His story needs a break everything in his story is circles at this point. So creating a new outlet to create a new spiderman story is not a bad thing. Nothing wrong with a successor. Miles and the assorted spider comics is no different than Marvel version of the Batfamily. The only difference is they carry the spider name. I do agree they needed to alter his personality more from Peter though in the comics. Spiderverse does a better job of it.

I really do like Spiderverse. That said, I am sorry Miles is token Spider Man, in comics in origin, in all of that. I do like how the Spiderverse movie handled his family and such, but I don't think I would like comic book Miles. Now, before Spiderverse came out, I knew he existed, was from another dimension, and eventually pulled into the main universe - that was a big mistake. Peter is Spider Man, regardless of any copycats and you're very right that very few people would've known him if not for that movie. I think the strength and weakness of Spiderverse is what you said - if you put a mask on him, he acts like Peter and may as well be spider Man, and frankly, that makes his skin color a completely moot point.

I feel like they're trying WAY too hard to shoehorn MM into everything all of a sudden. Trying to get their SJW points. He was shoehorned into the Spider Man game a few years ago and had no reason whatsoever to be there and his gameplay parts were boring as hell, just like MJ's. They threw him in for no reason other than to simply have him there. We barely Know Peter at this point in the game yet they're trying so hard to shove in the token character and have another Spider Man when we barely have the first Spider Man. Then they did Into The Spiderverse and made him the main character. And I'll admit it was a good movie but, if you're going to do a SM movie, Peter Parker should be the main character. But, as I said, shoehorning. Now we have the MM videogame. So we've completely chucked PP out now and the focus is solely on MM, even though we haven't even gotten a sequel to the SM game yet. A proper sequel anyway. But, again, in these trying times, they went for the token character instead of the main because REASONS. Look I'm in no way against characters of other cultures or races but not at the expense of the classic characters. I mean, did anyone ask for a game where Kamalah Khan was the main character? Anyone? Show of hands..... NO. They didn't. Yet there she is for no reason at all somehow leading the Avengers. Because REASONS. Tokenism in all its forms is a bad thing.

@@MrAMOG1990 "Why do you think the movie was a success" The movie as predicted by Sony wasn't the hit they were looking for so... " and the game is flying off the shelves? " Because is a new spider man game (along with it being a ps5 launch title and even then it is just glorified dlc) and even then they are people that still took problem with the character. Anyway being more successful=/=a good character, spider woman sold hundred thousand of copies as of recent and there is a lot wrong with her nowadays then back then. "YOU see nothing but skin color " That is some nice projection I don't obsess over race as that is not really apart of the hispano worldview. "why YOU hate such a beloved character that is quickly becoming a fan favorite. " No I hate him because of the fact and the reasons why a character as morales was created and going all the way to 616 universe, if morales was so unique they could've given his own code name and done something drastically with the character but they didn't put ultimate peter in the same situations and the end result would've been the same and I have so much to criticize miles for as a character he is not handled well and things that don't compel about this character and a 2nd dimensional character he is going stick that way. Because marvel now has cocks so far up their ass they unironically think pandering is what's going to make them successful which is why the marvel comics as a company is being devoured from the inside out, because instead of creating characters that are completely separate, they take characters and tokenize them and this has not only happen to just Spiderman which of course is having marvel dying. And what adds insult to injury is you put miles in a universe that is already over saturated with spider people and don't get me started on silk either, making his character even more pointless than it already is. " Miles was soooooo bad as you say then it wouldn't be such a hit" Is that why his comics are barely selling now? Again if the character can stand on his own two legs without the need of leeching off of another character with unique personality distinctions and not being a tokenized spiderman that would be forgotten by 10 years people had a problem when you had clones like ben rielly being the replacement and you are still going people still having this problem now the fact you constantly pull the race card means you dont have any defense for the character other than what his race is I mean hell I like spawn I like liu kang despite me not being asian or black there are plenty of good black characters and miles ain't one of them. "wouldn't be such a hit dumbass" You can throw names all you want I am still baffled as how you people still see nothing but race instead of the criticisms that Rippa is bringing up.

I loved the Ultimate Spider-Man run, until they killed off Peter to put in Miles. It was basically saying "Miles can't make it without the Spider-Man name." and they're obviously right. No one would care about Miles if he didn't have the name Spider-Man. I gave Miles five issues in Ultimate and it was a let down. Loved the Ultimate Spider-Man Peter so much too. I wanted it to keep going with Peter (and I generally don't care for the movies always trying to keep him in HS/early college age), and while Spider-Woman is one of my favorite Marvel characters, I did love the female clone of Peter being Jessica :) That was a nice twist.
