Dr. Locke - I had never done any kind of treatments. Then my daughter was getting married, & I decided to try a new cheek filler my doctor told me about. I wanted to look my best for the wedding. Sure enough - just my luck, the nurse hit a vein & caused a small hematoma on my right cheek! Thank God, it was a six weeks before & my cheek healed by the wedding. But to this day, I can see a small ‘divit’ on my cheek leftover from the hematoma!😱 NEVER again.

As a woman with moderate-severe hearing loss, I heavily depend on facial expressions and lip reading to understand what people are saying. It would be such a struggle to communicate with a Botox/frozen faced-person! That’s why I love how expressive you are, Dr. Maren! Don’t ever change that! ❤

I am so discouraged by how popular this is - these frozen faces everywhere. It turns out your facial expressions literally transit the emotions to your brain - it's this feedback loop. So when you get Botox, even a little, you experience less empathy, less joy, less amazement, less anger, less depression, less frustration. Some docs have been giving it for frown lines to treat depression. OK, fine. But I'd rather experience joy, delight, laughter, sorrow, compassion to the fullest whilst I'm here - it's the whole point of being human.

@@jpichet6999 If you have a good injector who knows where to inject and not overdo it you will not look weird. It gets weird when it messes with the brows where they look unnaturally arched… ALL THE TIME. Not good. Not only do you need a good injector but you need to clearly vocalize exactly what result you want. I said I want my forehead lines “softened” not completely gone. I’m 55. I should have some lines. I also said I want my brows to remain in their natural position. All of that was accomplished. Always be conservative. 🥂

As a licensed master esthetician, who has never done Botox or filler (I'll be 51 in Nov), I loved seeing this video. I never discourage or bash the treatment to clients, but I do try to educate them on the good, the bad, and the potential ugly of botox and filler. Most clients do it, some look great, others not so much. I feel as if I'm the only one who thinks about what the effects will be 20, 30 years down the road, especially for those who start in their early 20's. The thought of muscle atrophy is the fear that keeps me injection free. Will it take face freezing amounts to one day hold ones face up? What happens if you for whatever reason can no longer get it bc of illness, finances, tolerance? Some say the face wouldn't fall, that it would settle into what it looked like before botox, but I don't see how that's possible. Maybe in 5 or 10 years I'll feel differently, I do occasionally think hmm, should I, but something always stops me. So for now, I'll continue my retinoids, IPL, microdermabrasion, peels, microneedling and sunscreen. Thanks for the video, would love to see one on microneedling and ipl/bbl (broad band light, not Brazilian butt lift lol).

I'm 34 years old and I've had weak facial muscles since... my late teens early twenties (lot of stress, issues, depression). Filler did help but even my dermatologist who's very conservative, was like: look there's a quite severe atrophy for your cheeks so... let's make the hyaluronic acid (I had 4, 2 in each box of juvederm) set and if you need better results or you're not satisfied, come back after a month, we'll add a bit more. And she was right, it helped slightly (my weight loss a few years ago made things worse for my face). So I might even consider a facelift later (only once, I'll let myself get old lol). Sometimes it's not always to look like an IG model, some cases can require such interventions (like mine).

Age 67 with pretty good skin. Never had anything done to my face until mid July this year. Had 20 units of Botox injected into 11s during a routine derm visit for skin check. Had blurred vision, headache, left sided brow drop and dry eyes for 10 days afterwards. I was so worried that I went to see an ophthalmologist to make sure my eyes were ok. Then, after all that, the Botox wore off within 4 weeks or so. Paid $300 for that injection. I doubt that I would ever do that again.

I turned 30 back in April and I definitely faced some anxiety over aging. It's normal, especially for women, to worry about their fading appearances as they get older especially if you are lucky enough to enjoy natural good looks in your prime. I think not worrying about it and taking care of yourself (maintaining healthy habits, not stressing, etc.) will lead you to aging gracefully with less drastic changes to your complextion.

I wish i could like this video x 100 times! More people need to be having this conversation and the risks need to be spread to everyone. Even more important than the risks is the toxic effect fillers and botox are having on our minds. Women are feeling social pressures to get it and look a certain way. It's unnatural for us not to age and we need to start embracing our wrinkles and sagging and loving ourselves for what we are. Aging is a gift that not everyone has the luxury of receiving...humans would do well to remember that. 💕

I want it done but not for anti ageing but because I gave very heavy brows and have done since forever. I just would like to look less hideous when I see myself. I don't think it would help complete but I can't afford anything else and I have seen that it does help lift the brows a little bit. Life is full of risks and it's up to each of us to decide what we do. If it makes me feel even 5% less ugly then I don't see that as a bad thing.

yeah you see it in a bit of a drastic way lol ok you cant stop aging but you can drastically slow it down... how? eating antioxidants exercising is a huge factor and having a clean diet together with eating less sugar then moisturizing your skin, using the right skincare, retinol ect and sure botox. So yeah you can chose the way you want to age and look decades younger. I chose this way. Its everybodys choice how they want to age and I don't knock down one way or another. We all have our own picture on how we want to treat our mind, body and beauty but I think its just esthetically nicer to have less wrinkles but that's just me and I'm a girl/woman so yeah I think thats natural lol but each to each own. Some people scratch off botox but want later on a facelift which you may get around with if you do use botox or similar...besides you said its scary if you talk to someone and their face wont move well yeah you can get injections that do look natural its just about picking the right surgeon

Sadly after a certain age, for any real change it’s either the needle or the knife. I am all for doing things in moderation. And if only I could stick to this myself .. but In truth leading a healthy lifestyle, quitting sugar for good, keeping fit and body toned no matter what our age is what the focus should be. I started getting Botox at age 56. ( about twice a year) It has been such a blessing! I pay 200.00 for my elevens and forehead. You could try it once and see what you think. I’ve had droopy eyelid on one side before. Also developed a tolerance to Botox. I used to get juverderm and réstalayne in my lips and cheeks. Until it started to migrate. Then I just had as much of the filler dissolved in 2020 as possible. My lips looked saggy from the dissolving process. It was very painful. Most people get lip lifts if they had huge lips like I had. Thankfully, my lips healed nicely. The sagging went away, and they tightened up almost back to my natural lips. I don’t think I’ll ever have my natural look back because I altered my face so much with fillers. I am pretty happy with my face now even with my smaller lips again. Fillers and the effects of them long term can be permanent. People need to take into consideration that everything has side affects and trends also change all the time. I’ve never been one to follow trends, but lips and filler I had my fun with. I am glad I’m not doing them anymore. They costed thousands of dollars to keep up. Now when I see someone with injected lips, I don’t think they look good at all on anyone. Thanks for the honest vibes that nobody seems to add to their videos about fillers or Botox. Hello, in my experience it is not only useful for prevention of wrinkles, but it also smooths those already present on forehead, etc. Btw, I never had side effects. And something she doesn't mention is that the effect is cumulative, i.e. after several treatments the effect of each treatment lasts longuer, up to 7-8 months, if not more. And if on top of this you use LED red and near infrared light (panel or mask) every day, the effect is even more prolonged. This is my experience; doesn't mean it will be the exact same for everybody, but take this as a reference.😊

“Less than most skincare regimes”. I think you have a warped view of what most people’s skincare regimes look like. I consider myself quite the skincare junkie, but I don’t spend $2000 a year on skincare. Plus, I doubt people who get Botox stop using skincare…

I haven't done anything to my face ever. Just try to do some sunscreen and shade.... a lot of shade as my face gets a lot of sun as I ski a lot. I think putting toxins in your body is a dulling idea. This is a great video on what it does. There are no long term safety studies!! wow. Eye opener! Let's all age together. Let's accept our gray hairs and wrinkles! Let's work on eating healthy, doing healthy things like deep breathing and meditation, prayer and treating our body as a temple! Self acceptance is a huge key! Love you all. Great video!

Thank you for making this video! I learned a lot. Botox is so normalized now. Nobody talks about risks. This has so much more authority coming from a derm who also doesn't use it. I would love a video on fillers. What I see of them in actresses over 30 is scary. And yet even my OB advertises them! Love your channel and your educational content!

I like your position on this subject. I had Botox ages ago and again in 2021 - it was good result! I’m a former model so I’ve done my best to look after my appearance. Simple things like: Protecting my skin from the Sun, eating smaller portions of food, drinking green tea and daily red light therapy. I do simple exercises around my home (now and then) and a use electrical devices on my face at home to maintain and produce new collagen. These efforts build up overtime and they keep my appearance going rather than drastically change it. Botox has such a dramatic effect on my look I start to believe that I look like that all the time. This dramatic effect without any effort brings out a spoilt brat part of my personality that I don’t like so much. The humility that comes from maintenance and getting older disappears. I’m not somebody that can have an instant treatment that gives such a great result because it brings out the worst to me. Maybe in 10 years this won’t be the case but I probably won’t care in 10 years because I’ll be focusing on my spirituality. ❤

Gave up neuromodulators 2 years ago due to documented antibody response. Thyroid storm and urticaria that lasted a year + …After 10 years of use. I loved the effects but over time my face greatly changed too. Anyone who has developed auto-immune issues whilst using these products should also take serious note. Loved this video. Thank you for reaffirming what I already know. In coming years this will end up being viewed as a video way ahead of it’s time. Everyone loves a quick fix-but neurotoxins don’t create beauty outcomes without side effects. My face actually looks better now, it’s incredible what diet, massage, sunblock, Tretinoin and antioxidant serums can do. I have cheek bones again, my face has taken back on a heart shape and my jowls disappeared. Incredible, sayonara tox! ❤

I’m 46 and never done any Botox or any other work to my face because luckily I have oily skin that keeps my skin looking younger even though I start to have fine lines but it’s part of getting older and don’t want to change that as it’s a blessing to grow older. Please make a video about fillers to learn more about them and side effects

Thank you for this video. I didn't start any Botox until the age of 60 and I have only used it a few times over the past several years. I had something very unusual happen where my arms would tingle and go numb off and on all day. I went to doctors, and no one knew what was going on. I did not put it together until it happened 3 times in a row after Botox and always goes away after the Botox wears off. They keep telling me it can't be connected but I disagree since it happens each time on the second or third day after the injections like clockwork.

Thank you for this video. It's always good to hear different perspectives and always important to reiterate to people to do their due diligence before getting any sort of procedure (and not just cosmetic). And of course, there's always the question, why do we feel we need this or any procedure?

Thank you for addressing this. I had severe side effects from Botox migrating (specialists believe the nurse nicked my vein) which has caused long-term health effects. My first and last time getting this toxin almost killed me and it took me several years to recover. The black box warning specifically states it can migrate to other parts of the body, which of course injectors don’t want to tell their clients. People need to realize this is the most lethal neurotoxin on the planet that they are injecting into their body. And trust me, Allergan, the ER, and your injector won’t be able to do anything to help you when there are side effects. You have to ride the wave of feeling like death all at the expense of a concrete forehead.

I'd love to see a video for fillers. Those in my opinion are definitely more problematic and apparently addictive, with the most visible changes. I see young girls using them and forgetting what they initially looked like. I'm 45 and I wasn't completely immune to the allure in my mid 30's. But I only tried once and hated the effect (gladly now disappeared). Regarding botox, I found my balance and I'm happy with it. I only do it max twice per year or less, usually every 8 months. And only on my crows feet. The forehead is still OK because I use, tretinoin (prescribed for acne at age 29) and tca peels that take care of my skin elasticity so I don't have wrinkles on the forehead. I don't like getting botox so I ask for the minimal quantity to just weaken a little bit the muscle, not completely freeze it. This way I spend less, I prevent the wrinkles in my eye area but I keep my expression almost intact (I mean the expression is actually the same as when I was younger, nothing really have changed). I do believe cosmetic procedures if done properly and not overdone or getting obsessed over, are OK. Especially botox. I travel a lot in under developed countries and some years I couldn't get botox, no biggie. I was always careful with my sunscreen and it wasn't the end of the world. Moderation is key! Cheers

My best friend takes botox now for her wrinkles after another of her friends introduce her to botox, I told her about the risks one time but she brush me off saying oh well there's risks to everything, I know the other lady who introduce her to that is my same age and she looks so fake already, like the doctor here said she is going now for fillers and what not, she looks so weird now like another person. I have been always afraid of side effects and needles, watching this video makes me realize I am doing the right thing. I love myself and I am embracing my wrinkles, I rather invest in a good skincare routine ❤️.

Bravo Doctor! This is the best info on Botox i have seen in years. You look awesome and young without Botox. I am 52 refusing any injectables, I took great care of my skin since i was 18...still receive compliments on my skin. Another problem i see with my friends and collegues who get Botox is that they rely only on Botox and fillers, ie.e they splurges thousands on these procedure but do not care to use retinol, SPF, vit C, etc. Result? yes no wrinkles, but no facial expression but skin still either bumpy or full of sun spots...they do not really look younger!

It's possible to train yourself to GENTLY use your forehead muscles so that you can show/feel expression while minimizing the development of grooves as time goes by. When I was young (I'm 53 now), I would over exaggerate my forehead expressions which was causing grooves horizontally across my forehead and vertically above my nose. I trained myself to GENTLY show expression in my forehead. The grooves lessoned a bit and seem to be developing at a slower rate. Of course, NOTHING stops aging if we live long enough! PS: Thank you for this fantastic video!

11 years of botox twice a year, sometimes 3 times a year, never once had a headache- had a spocked brow a few times in beginning but a correction to areas injected fixed that. I switched from Botox to Jeuveau last year. I like Jeuveau better. I have always had a very deep frown wrinkle on my face that made me look perpetually angry and I was glad to get rid of it. I only do 20 to 22 units at a time. I do find micocurrent is good at spacing the treatment times out even further. ** update 1-22-2024-- I quit botox now. lol I can't handle how my eyelids droop. Now that I'm older, it really compromises my eyelids. I use microcurrent and arginine to minimize forehead wrinkles
