I'm a non-Muslim who once fasted every day of Ramadan -- only out of curiosity to see what it was like, not from any belief in religion. Going without water was the really hard part, although mainly in the last three hours or so before sunset. I had to keep my mind off water and the much-too-slowly-moving clock, and the best way to do that was to curl up and sleep or rest while listening to music. He's right that the fast encourages laziness. It didn't make me feel "spiritual" in any way. Every day i would break the fast by first drinking glass after glass of water and then i'd eat too much because someone was giving me all the free food I could eat. It was just a personal endurance test.

Muslims in non-Muslim countries might have it a bit easier especially if they live alone or their family isn't that too strict. When I was in college I had a Muslim friend. We used to workout together and after that eat. Now at one point Ramadan came, so after workout we would eat as usual. So we asked him, "It's Ramadan. Aren't you fasting?" He just replied, "Who cares? I eat because I'm hungry." lol

From a health standpoint, ramadan "fasting" is complete and utter nonsense. Like you mentioned: Not being allowed to drink anything during the day time, especially in *hot* countries, is *very* unhealthy, it is even dangerous. Especially for people who work. You need to stay hydrated. In addition, at night, when you are allowed to eat and drink again, your metabolism slows down, your digestive system doesn`t work as properly as during the day. In other words: Fasting at day time means torture for your health and your body, feasting at night does the same because your food is processed badly. I have nothing to say against intermittent fasting, it can be very healthy. Religious fasting is Bullshit. It means nothing but following orders and rules which make NO sense.

When my husband worked in a Muslim country, he used to fast during Ramadan, though he didn't have to as food was provided for the many non-Muslim workers in the compound. But while he fasted all through his 12-hr , 7 days-a week shift, his Muslim co-workers stayed home and slept through most of it. He always told me that it was all a sham. And it's true about gaining weight by the end of it. There was so much feasting, especially with delicious sweet treats, that he used to gain weight, and at least he was still working his shift - imagine the others who did nothing else but sleep and feast.

Great points made, as ever. I'm a convinced intermittent faster, put my Diabetes 2 into remission with it, but it's very important to drink plenty of water throughout a fast if it is to be effective and successful. Most of the Intermittent Fasting support groups will ban anyone who advocates dry fasting because there are real health risks connected with it. Muslims will abstain from food and drink for around 18 hours during Ramadan and so forth, but autophagy, the body's natural repair on the cellular level as a result of fasting, starts to kick in at around 20 hours. Having done it regularly for many years now I can easily fast for two periods of 36 hours each week, which it wouldn't be possible to do safely without water. So yes, fasting is great and healthy. Lots of good support for sensible intermittent fasting now, but dry fasting definitely a bad idea, and you'll be blocked from most IF groups on social media if you try to plug it.

It doesn't say that you should focus more on certain parts of ibadah... But rather doing even a little of it could reward you a thousand times than doing it in other months... Its a blessing... Allah wants us to go to jannah but it's us that aren't willing to do even the bare minimum to achieve that...and i have siblings that can't fast because of their conditions... Allah doesn't burden a soul with more than it can bear... So those ppl in those conditions that won't allow them to fast will not be forced to fast... There will always be ppl that will mock them for not fasting but its those ppl that fail to follow Islam, them taunting ppl for not fasting has nothing to do with Islam... The only thing that Muslims ms really focus on for personal growth is Reading, as they call it. It is not reading persay, it's recitation. That's the only skill or trait all Muslims truly value. Things like science, or philosophy, or carpentry, etc are all secondary to recitation.

It's funny how some Muslim scholars have to use a hadith prophecizing that when the Dajjal would arrive. The a day would last a year, and the following day would last a few months, and so on. And that by Dajjals arrival, people should still pray five times a day by estimating the hours rather than seeing where the sun is from themselves. To explain prayer and fasting in the polar regions. Wouldn't it have been good if a hadith had circulated from Bukhari, Muslim or even Al-Hakim with a hadith such as the following below? 'Abu Hurairah has reported that Gods Messenger has said 'Some of you among my Ummah will reach lands where the sun does not rise for so and so months. Whichever observes fast in these lands, estimate it from the time you are awaken'. Anas Bin Malik has narrated it as "where the sun doesnt set". (Sahih McDonalds 420c)'

You can break your fast bro, no one is holding you. It's true that it will be hard to eat in front of your muslim friends but you can publicize that.
