Hi Andrew, I am a Spanish, living in Spain, but I also lived abroad for quite some time. The country is in full woke mode since about 2004, and it's only getting worse. The property risk is not just confiscation but also occupation of the property, with a very sluggish legal system if you want to recover your property. New and increasing local donation/transmission/iheritance taxes on the way. Also if you rent your property but you are not resident, taxes are higher and no deductions will apply. On the good side, Spain allows lots of dual citizenships, good and cheap medical assistance, and the lifestyle is great (for visiting) if you have some money in the pocket.
