I‘m looking forward to an episode about building your own VPN and how that increases privacy. I can only think of the benefit of hiding your traffic from your ISP, which in the US is probably a win. But I‘m unsure about the benefit in Europe, where ISPs arent allowed to sell your traffic data

Loving your content! I'm curious to hear your thoughts on using Tor from your home. Any party that would be looking at my traffic knows I'm using Tor, even if they don't know what I'm doing on Tor. We can assume if we're using Tor we are on a watchlist, making us a target for increased surveillance. Do you consider it worthwhile, and if not what would you suggest as an alternative, such as a VPS?

About Sweden and mullvad . The FRA-lawEdit The new bill (Prop. 2006/07:63), generally referred to the "FRA law" (Swedish: FRA lagen), proposed changes in the defence intelligence act, the electronic communications act, the secrecy act of 1980 (SFS 1980:100), and the creation of an all new law regulating SIGINT.[23] These changes would have allowed the FRA to monitor both wireless and cable bound signals passing the Swedish border without a court order,[24] while also introducing several provisions designed to protect the privacy of individuals, according to the original proposal.[23] The law's proponents argued for the need to give FRA new guidelines and a modernised legal framework, in order to regulate Internet surveillance and to combat threats to national security more effectively, such as terrorism and serious transnational crime; while opponents to the law claimed it enabled mass surveillance and violated privacy rights.[25] The Riksdag passed the bill on June 18, 2008, after a heated debate amid public protests, and it went into effect January 1, 2009.[24][25][26] Criticised for being too far-reaching, in an attempt to address the privacy concerns raised during the parliamentary procedure,[27] the Government soon thereafter proposed an amendment to the law (Prop. 2008/09:201),[28] to strengthen protection of privacy by making court orders a requirement,[29] and imposing several limits on the intelligence-gathering.[30][31][32] The amendment passed the Riksdag October 14, 2009, and went into effect December 1, 2009 (SFS 2008:717).[22] Current legal frameworkEdit According to the law (SFS 2008:717), SIGINT is only permitted in order to assess:[29][31] external military threats to the country, conditions for Swedish participation in peace support operations and international humanitarian efforts or any threat to the security of national interests in the implementation of such efforts, strategic matters regarding international terrorism or other serious transnational crime that could threaten important national interests, development and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, military equipment and items referred to in the law on the control of dual-use items and technical assistance, serious external threats to the public infrastructure, conflicts abroad with ramifications for international security, foreign intelligence operations against national interests, or a foreign powers actions or intentions of vital importance to Swedish foreign policy or security and defence policy. The FRA is not allowed to initialize any surveillance on their own,[8] and only gets access to communication lines as decided by The Defence Intelligence Court.[22][30][33] Communications service providers are legally required, under confidentiality, to transfer cable communications crossing Swedish borders to specific "interaction points", where data may be accessed after a court order.[34][35][36] The number of companies affected by the legislation was estimated as "being limited (approximately ten)".[37] The law does not permit intelligence-gathering by interception of signals where both the sender and recipient is located in Sweden, only signals crossing the borders of Sweden.[38] Initially, only the Government, the Government Offices and the Swedish Armed Forces could use FRA's SIGINT capabilities.[8][22] But after criticism from Swedish Security Service (SÄPO),[39] a change was made allowing The Swedish National Police Board and SÄPO to make use of the FRA as well, under otherwise unchanged regulations. The bill (Prop. 2011/12:179) passed in the Riksdag November 28, 2012, with the help of the Social Democratic Party, and went into force January 1, 2013.[40][41][42] Data retentionEdit Any personal data that may have been retained can not be stored for longer than 12 months, which is a year less than the maximum allowed by the Data Retention Directive.[43] In 2008, prior to the change in legislation, a news report from SVT, based on an account from an anonymous source, alleged the FRA had been storing personal information for much longer;[44] leading to a private citizen lodging a complaint with the police. Ultimately, a prosecutor did not launch a full-scale investigation, as it was deemed not illegal at the time.

Hey Akshay, were the passwords leaked in clear text? Fore sure this can happen to any VPN provider (although great infosec and opsec can significantly lower possible attack vectors). Also, not using passwords in the first place like Mullvad makes this attack useless. Strange that the data of only 10,000 customers was leaked (perhaps the attacker was able to capture credentials as they were sent to one or a few endpoint).

Once email leaves Proton it goes in clear text for all to read. It arrives in plain text and is encrypted ready for the user to log on and collect it. What nonsense is that!

04:36 Mullvad uses M247Ltd server hosting in the UK. The same as PIA and others. That means the host is forced to log all data in and out of the equipment and turn it over to police. Mullvad does log user details in order to enforce policies such as payments and devices connected. I definitely WOULD NOT recommend using Firefox VPN as your user ID and device fingerprint is linked to your traffic - but would trust Mullvad more than others. People forget, the IP number is only one way of many to trace people. Hiding your IP does not hide all your device and App and browser fingerprinting or access to real accounts. At 13:35 you misunderstand DoH or DNS over HTTPS. You can still use that via a VPN, it will just slow things down a bit and your requests will remain encrypted. NOTHING IS LEAKED or in plain text. Leak is the wrong word, you mean DNS over HTTPS requests will be sent via your connection through the VPN and out to the DNS provider, then returned to you. That stops the VPN controlling you and recommended for the £3 a month ones! What you need to tell people about is WebRTC, how it can expose your real VPN. Many other things do too.

Web sites still know exactly who and where you are. Technology has moved on in the past 10 years. You have advert and tracking companies to thank for that. Your device ID, UUID embedded in GooglePlaystore Apps and WiFi, bluetooth and contact lists and browser/devise fingerprinting make sure of all that with your cookie data and other inputs and speel check services... lots of ways to know who you are. If you ever log on to a site via a VPN or Tor, they know who you are by matching up records from when you are in the clear. Links, pixel ads, scripts, they all get you.

Great question Nicolás. My gut feeling (have to research this more thoroughly) is that the people behind Mullvad are genuinely passionate about privacy and security and have very sophisticated experience in those fields. Proton on the other hand is more of a mainstream profit-driven enterprise. Mullvad is owned by its founders. Proton is VC funded. The founders of Mullvad are hardcore Linux nerds. The founders of Proton are scientists who later in their career got into privacy. Also, at a personal level, I once sent an encrypted email to Proton and they replied in clear text. That did it for me.

Hi Sun, there is a lot of rumors about “Express VPN” saying that its central database is in HongKong and are financially supported by China. Can you verify if that is true. (Background story: In recent years, most usable VPN services are down in China due to the updates on Firewall and the mass killing of IPs. However, “Express” is seemingly the only few that aren’t affecting by much)

Interesting issue... have you tried Mullvad btw? It guess it is pretty easy to block all IPs of a given VPN provider... perhaps self-hosting is the solution? That being said, I guess the traffic would have to be spoofed to mitigate packet and port analyses. This would require (potentially significant) research and time... It is an interesting challenge that would also require collaboration with people I can trust in China. To anyone wanting to collaborate, feel free to reach out privately using PGP over Tor.

Hey Tarek, haven’t researched Express VPN, but Mullvad has a great reputation among privacy advocates. I chose Switzerland because this country is not part of the 14 Eyes surveillance program and it (probably) has great privacy legislation to protect its private banking economy (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Act_on_Banks_and_Savings_Banks).

@berdychma
@berdychma 3 жыл бұрын
The only thing vpn does is routing traffic through their servers and “shielding” it from your internet provider (be it at home, or anywhere else). The key question is, how much you trust the vpn provider. I hate the promotion youtubers are doing to vpn providers with privacy recommendations. The key point is, whether you trust vpn provider more then your internet provider. Passwords are generally not an issue, as they are (even within vpn) transmitted over https (encrypted). So in general, there are no reasons to be using vpn. Most of the traffic is encrypted by default anyway today. Unless you need for example look like being located in different country, I don’t see a reason to use vpn for private usage. Ok, I may trust more VPN provider then some coffee shop internet, but this is just a feeling without any hard facts.
@sunknudsen
@sunknudsen 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for pitching in Martin. Depending on one's ISP, using a VPN also helps mitigate DNS profiling (HTTPS doesn't help here). That being said, this only applies if one trusts the VPN provider more than the ISP... so again... we must chose VPN providers wisely. VPNs are also good to mitigate networking vulnerabilities such as some man-in-the-middle attacks. This is especially true when using shared Wi-Fi networks.

@@sunknudsen thanks for adding more details to my comment. As I said, all is about trust. What frustrates me (and it is clearly visible even in people commenting your great video) is that lot of people don’t understand what vpn does and using it because someone (promoting some provider for money) gave them a feeling, that vpn is actually needed and should be trusted no doubts. This is ridiculous.
