See, that's what I thought... until I heard the post-Morrison albums. Sometimes music is not just about the songwriter (and with The Doors, they all did it), but also about the chemistry between them. Without Morrison, they didn't just lose a lyricist/vocalist, but they lost a major part of what was holding them together. I'm not saying the two post-Morrison albums were bad, they were really good, but they didn't have that feeling like the music is bewitching you.

I mean… are the Doors really even that straight forward? They have songs that feature bossa-nova drums, Latin organ grooves, and straight blues guitars, all over baritone poetry with some really aggressive singing mixed in (which went on to influence some of the most influential proto punk bands like The Stooges)… and that’s just the first song off the first album. The fact they were able to make songs sound simple while combining so many influences is a skill, not a hindrance
@Confessionsovergin3 жыл бұрын
I’ve noticed that this whole “that shit ain’t that hard to play man” stuff typically comes from players that only focus on the technical side of things and not the composing side of things. Composing is a part of music too, and composing interesting intervals and making them fit into a catchy pop-ish tune is a massively underrated skill
@bradagee90415 жыл бұрын
I love the Doors for the very simple fact that they sound like no one else (which admittedly doesn't mean they're good, just odd) and their sound is remarkably evocative of an esoteric, dark mood. Their lack of polish tended to work in their favor.

Dream theater's lyrics have never been BAD. They have always been either passable or good or even brilliant at times. It's only some of the later albums like black clouds or astonishing where some lyrics are cringy af but even those songs with stupidly direct lyrics feel very human and not contrived bs like the doors who think they're the best poets to walk on earth.
@anthonystark54125 жыл бұрын
@ Synth Streaks I might be mistaken, but if you're listening to Dream Theater for the lyrics, you're completely missing the brilliance of their music. The first time I heard The Doors' music was a long long time ago, as a child. A child does not: 1 - have an opinion that is influenced by any external factors, 2 - understand concepts such as technique or poetry. To my untrained and naive ears, the sound of Light My Fire playing for the first time was such an intense and powerful experience that I still remember it. Why? Why would that song mean so much to me? Simple...I had no misconceptions tainting my perception, I had no clue if Jim Morrison was dead, living, ghost, a genius, I didn't even know what sex and drugs were or if they were famous or obscure. All I knew was that this music was a huge f* deal and felt larger than life.

The Doors aren't about technique. They're about sex on the beach after you swim the sparkling trail the full moon casts on the water. They're about dancing in a hurricane as you listen to Riders on the Storm. They're doing 80mph to Road House Blues. They're 3AM on a rainy night after the bars close. They're about the long dark teatime of the soul (Thanks, D.A.) And that's why, 50 years after their heyday, they are still listened to. Take a 6-pack to the beach and listen to them again under the stars. And if you still don't get it - sorry, I can't be your guide.

I think that analysing the technical skill, of each musician a band consists of, not to be the best way to demonstrate that the band itself was, or not, a great one. When knowing your contents and your ideas, and under the assumption that you, self-ironically, call yourself “Prog Snob”, a visitor of your page gets a clear picture of your way of feeling and seeing music, or art in general, that is to say you attach great importance to technique/skill. But that’s not always enough, or rather, it’s not skill to determine how great something or someone is. Look at Jimi Hendrix! Purists of his time could easily ride roughshod over him, because he played in an unorthodox way, by not observing the standard way of playing guitar. And he was an innovator, who interpreted the cultural atmosphere of his time, and he is still modern. Though they did not have a particular skill on their instruments (Manzarek excepted), The Doors brought a new technique/style: a new different language. Their sound was their own only. They certainly took inspiration from their predecessors, and contemporaries, but the mix they created is absolutely unique, so it’s rather inappropriate, and superficial, that one gets to define them poor man’s Grateful Dead, or the combination of many pre-existing bands. The fact that you, as a musician, and a “prog snob” (I don’t necessarily mean that like a negative thing) cannot appreciate a band who is composed by instrumentalists who’d rather give importance to sound as an unicum, than to great skill, is absolutely legitimate, but there’s a huge difference between disliking and trying to demonstrate that the band you dislike was not so great as it seems. You named your video “Why I hate The Doors” and you listed your reasons, plausibly true according to you, almost objective, why they were not a great band. And you went so far as to say that many of their fans are musical ignorants, who don’t know what a chord, or a melody made as Christ commands, is like. I feel that, as frequently haters do, you gave reasons that are completely subjective, disguised as objective. Ok, John Densmore’s drumming sometimes is out of synch. Ok, Robby Krieger didn’t always come up with particularly original solos. Ok, Jim Morrison sometimes had a way of singing that was garbled. Then, I ask you: so what? If Densmore had flawlessly held the pace, if Krieger had developed better skill (actually, let’s be fair, most of rock artists in the Sixties had not much of a technique/skill!), if Morrison had sung in a more precise way, “on point”, would those same songs have had that magic we, Doors’ fans, poor common mortals, feel in them? If they don’t mean nothing to you, it’s alright, but to analyse a band in terms of skill only … Except for your personal reasons about technique, I don’t think that you proposed some more “progressive” arguments. I list you some of my reasons why The Doors were a huge band, one of the best in the history of rock, and music in general: 1) They were born in ’65 (like Pink Floyd), as a blues band (like Pink Floyd), “just” to develop, in a year and a half, a distinctive sound (think about those many artists who need years to get truly personal), totally different from the initial one, and, by doing so, they became a name to watch on the Californian live scene, with songs that combined blues, jazz, Spanish and eastern music, rock ‘n’ roll, and psychedelic rock, which, at the time, was still a “pre-historical” genre; 2) They published their first album, “The Doors”, in January ’67, before Summer of Love, before the explosion of hippie movement, of which they were not a part, in fact Morrison himself was very critical of it, recognizing the hypocrisy (or superficiality) behind it … and in that album, for the first time (or almost) they chose to include, at the ending of each LP sides, two “songs” that lasted more than 7 minutes, and in which there were tempo changes and a whole bunch of moods alternating (so, that album is what you might call a “proto-progressive album”). Grateful Dead recorded their first album in that very January, and they would publish it two months later, whereas The Doors had recorded the whole debut album in ’66. If there is any similarity, it’s because both bands were Californian, but Grateful Dead were more inspired by folk and country music than by weird blending with Eastern and Spanish moods; 3) Jim Morrison is one of the first rock frontmen who really emerged as an icon, adding the theatrical element, both in the lyrics and in live performances. Clearly inspired by Mick Jagger, Jim was, though, a cut above, because Jagger and Company would have never thought about writing a piece like “The End”, or to readapt a cabaret piece like “Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)”, in a modern key, or to talk about reptiles or highways that look like snakes, about killers, unknown soldiers, or Indian summers, etc … Jim was the one who definitely brought mythology into rock, which became something intellectual, and not only a consumer item; if not the first, he was one of the first, along with Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa and Velvet Underground; 4) The fourth reason, that follows on from the previous one, Morrison’s lyrics were real poetry; even those that seem less profound were functional to melodies, and they are perfect when sung, and sung in that specific way; also take a look to his collections of poems … you don’t know how many compositions you will find, to prove that Morrison was indeed illuminated by something upper; it is obvious that, being part of a band, he couldn’t base a whole album on extremely cultural value poems; I guess that such an album doesn’t exist. I don’t comment on what you said about drugs, because, if that’s a reason why to hate them, well, it is a pretty shitty reason. As if The Doors did that kind of music because of drugs only. If anything, if they played some shitty concerts, it’s just because sometimes they took drugs. I’m sorry to break it to you, but The Doors were an extraordinary band whom, however, you don’t like … face it!

I understand Mike's points, really. As someone who listens to a lot of prog rock and some technical metal, the Doors are an underwhelming experience. It's mostly simple, quite repetitive in some songs and overall "outdated". But as someone who enjoys music for what it is, the Doors are an extraordinary and very talented band. They were experimental, poetic, very diverse in their music with each album exploring different genres, fusing different elements into a single recognizable entity. Morrison's voice swiftly fits Krieger's gentle guitar licks. Technical? Not in the slightest but beautiful none the less. Ray Manzarek's mastery is more than note worthy. Essentially he was the bass player and soloist at the same time, allowing songs to have multiple sequences of guitar and vocal conversation alongside a percussive and smooth keyboard monologue while filling a groove that'd keep you locked in the song. Something that was very apparent in their live performances was their tendency to improvise in order bring a new experience for the audience, giving a damn good reason for their audience at the time to attend their shows. Those were the 60's, the people who listened to the Doors were into that and they simply fit the bill in all ways. Just like Slayer appeals to any fan of thrash metal in their aggression. You don't like the Doors not because they suck, it's because this music wasn't meant for you.

I'm not really that much of a Doors fan either, so this doesn't offend me one bit, but a lot of this can be easily picked apart: Drawing heavily from blues? Pretty standard for their period of existence; I doubt you'll find much rock in the 60s that doesn't draw at least considerably from blues... Psychedelia, again, was another prevalent thing in the 60s, with a lot of acid rock and flower power hippie stuff going on, so you might as well just make a general criticism of the decade rather than single out one band... The same thing can be said of predictability, considering that only later in the '70s music made great leaps in songwriting with better technique development and bands wanting to expand and becoming more and more progressive... I don't find the guitar really impressive either, but this just reaffirms why Hendrix was considerered such a game-changer, because a lot of guitarists before him were actually quite awful, and Robby Krieger might have actually been better than a lot of them if you consider there are jazzier and darker passages that put them on a different direction from other bands... Awkwardness in the music is another partial truth, put this awkwardness to create an unsettling atmosphere was actually a counteract of the more in the clouds tree-hugging hippie crap that saturated the music of the time (if you want to say they weren't being efficient at it, that might be a bit more fair)... This brings me to my last point, which is the fact that if vastly superior musicians in the 70s at any given point were drawing inspiration from The Doors to create much better music, delving into territory that might have been considered unsafe, risky or even creepy before, then you can see why it has historical value...

@Art Antipop oh trust me I agree I hate that argument and never listen to virtuoso guitar playing bc I think its usually overdone and tedious. Just saying that, being a lifelong doors fan, I've listened to pretty much all of their live material that's out there and as much as I love Robby Krieger his performances lack a lot of the time and the band in general too often has trouble staying as one piece, but ofc most of the time I think they sound great. I don't think they are by any means amateur just that they aren't the most talented band. But as I said they come together to make something truly different and special imo. Ray is the exception tho he is probably one of the most talented keyboard player of all time.

He definitely does. He calls HIMSELF a music snob and the majority of his "content" is him sitting on a couch by himself, spouting off subjective criticisms about every facet of a musician or group's entire discography as if they're not technical/melodic/innovative enough - all while himself making completely mediocre, cookie cutter, run of the mill prog metal in his own band. The dude writes prog metal that's more straightforward and bland than 90% of even semi-prominent modern day prog bands I've ever listened to, while insisting in his YT videos that musicians that can absolutley play circles around him are mediocre. The guy blatantly thinks he's the shit, then invites people to argue against his opinions in the comments and legitimately NEVER responds to anything.

What I think Mike is missing (horribly) is first, certain bands have certain chemistry. If a person attempts to dissect music too closely, the chemistry becomes invisible. Second, music often reflects an era, or an emotion, or politics, or an event, etc. I can't listen to much country or hip hop b/c of not being able to relate to the emotion or the events that inspire it. Stuff was happening in the world at the time of the Doors' heyday, and a mood that can't ever be seen again. Equally important is that all four members' musical backgrounds came from / were influenced by other types of music genres, which can be a vague term meaning many things to many people. However defined, it can be the birth / origin of a unique fusion that is best when unintentional, as with the Doors, and makes them UNIQUE, especially at the time. They don't sound like any musicians today, or any musicians at that time, even though Mike strains to find connections. Densmore's drumming comes from jazz roots. His time syncopation was varied and creative, and uncommon for the most part. Krieger's guitar came from flamenco training, and southern blues. Manzara's keyboards were a combination of a classical foundation, but I've always heard some jazz phrasing, in and of itself unique. Morrison's vocals were from blues, or expression of the poetry in his head, or from another planet, but unique, even if he was drunk and off key sometimes. Their writing went far beyond three chords. End of the day, Mike is entitled to his opinion, as we are all. I did listen to his entire presentation, and simply disagree. He hears stuff in Doors' music that I don't, and certainly vise versa. The most important thing that where I think Mike is wrong is that he seems to imply that they, the members, were trying to create a certain sound, and failing, according to him. I believe they were just playing what they heard, and were inspired to create, from their chemistry, and their groove, and as affected by their world. I don't think they formed to get rich - probably just to enjoy music and get dates, an old formula.

Thank god classic rock musicians were not obsessed with a 21st century dork’s idea of technique. If Pete Townsend had perfect technique The Who would have been upper middle class bores. If technique had come first there would have been no Tommy, no Piper at the Gates of Dawn, no Everyone Knows this is Nowhere, no Paranoid, no great CCR songs, no Doors first album, etc. Rock is primarily about groove and feel - technique comes later. If you want technique listen to early Wes Montgomery - he and all the best jazz players blow away any modern metal player slavishly tied to the minor tonic.
@wojciechwlodarczyk99645 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. What is technique? The "technique" itself, which consists in quickly changing fingers on the scales, will not guarantee the compositional (but also improvisational) technique, which the Doors had mastered to the highest degree.
@robinterrazas6545 жыл бұрын
Piper actually has a lot of great technique, as Rick Wright was classically trained and used that to help Syd. And with his understanding of theory Syd went on to use many techniques such as dissonance to create a unique atmosphere
@akosv965 жыл бұрын
This is why his point of "boring and lacking technique" is flying right by my ears. Blues originally became a thing because of the snobbery of jazz is lacking life. Music became a chaotic mess of showing off and squeezing in as many riffs as possible because you have to impress the professors and snobs. The fact that jazz is taught on college level is proof it's 100% musical cocksucking.

I think The Doors are interesting. Jim Morrison might be the first baritone to ever sing in a rock band. Robby Krieger was a flamenco guitar player that applied that style to Rock. Listen to Spanish Caravan and have your mind blown. They were unique when they came out. They weren't part of the Haight-Ashbury hippie movement. Their music was more Gothic and dark. Just about every rock band from the late sixties sounded the same. Love them or hate them, at least The Doors stood out. Everyone from Danzig to Type O Negative to David Bowie we're influenced by them.

Wow, do you really despise The Doors + Jim Morrison 18:33 worth? This was painful to listen to. Aside from being a beautiful poet, those closest to Morrison have said he was one of the most generous people they'd ever met. The Doors may have been a little psychadelic at times, but they weren't drugged out hippies, they were intellectuals who related more with the beatniks than flower power; Morrison's lengthy recorded interviews highlight his intelligence, wit, and desire to use his writing and creativity as a catalyst for something worthwhile - that was his hope. Beyond brilliant on keys, Ray Manzarek was also a beautiful storyteller. Having a sweet spirit is worth more than perfect pitch or banging drum solos, if you ask me. They knew which way was up and they pushed the boundaries of peoples perceptions. There's a reason The Doors transcend time and space; they spoke the truth, and the truth is timeless... they were, and still are, magic. ✨
