For winter months you can pleated save by using a ceramic heater by using a lithium battery generator. And why your driving your recharging the Lithium battery again.

I have a 2021 4Runner. Gonna drive cross country for fun and I will sleep in the back at night because it’s gonna be hot (it’s summer) This is a 4.0 v6 gas engine and it can idle until it runs out of gas. Not gonna hurt a thing. As long as the cooling system is working your fine. It doesn’t matter if it’s diesel or gas. I’m gonna be completely cool when I sleep. Damn a motel!

I idle above 75 and below 25 ish , works well for me . Also I hate staying at hotels on normal nights , just for resets .

Another thing to consider is the fact that most of an engines war happens at a cold start. Therefore, keeping it at operating temp is actually better for the internal components.

Right, but I would not advise to idle much at all, oil pressure and Temps are too low at least on diesels. Bump up the idle to around 1100 or so. This brings up oil pressure quite a bit and keeps it running at operating temperature. Most wear does occur during a cold start and shutting on and off also makes the engine continuously go through heat cycles as it warms up which is the hardest thing on an engine. Guys who shut their truck off like say at the fuel pump and everytime they run in for food or somthing will most likely never see a million miles. High mileage engines are ones that run for extended periods of time per start cycle.

I never look at it as a trade-off between ‘idle all night’ or ‘take a hotel’. I take a hotel every 3 to 5 days just because…..but never idle the engine. At least more than an hour or so. You DO have a good point vis-a-vis “comfort”, though. Especially during times of very hot or very cold weather. I find it easier to stay comfortable when it’s cold (good wool blanket takes care of most of that) than when it’s hot. Currently it’s good sun-reflecting window coverings (Weather Tech currently) and slightly open windows and 2 battery-powered fans. Kinda-sorta works, but it’s a work in progress. Looking to get a generator….the ‘quiet’ models…….to run a small A/C and a small electric heater. They use less than a gallon of gas in a 7 or 8 hr period and won’t wear down your engine. But I can sorta see why YOU opt for the ‘engine idle’ model. You stay (at least according to an earlier video) at truck stops. So you’re on a concrete jungle with a hundred other big trucks which are idling all night. So partly open windows and your OWN vehicle being quiet isn’t an option. The noise alone would probably keep you awake. I stay in rest areas.

I’ve heard people getting small generators in the bed and running small AC units into the cab. And in the winter a small space heater for heat. I’ve travels for years working and living in my travel trailer, and this seems to be an alternative for cheaper living and maintains comfort as well. I pull w/ a99’ Cummins 2500, and am guessing the older trucks have less issues than newer trucks on DPF and emissions issues clogging. I’m straight piped turbo back, 5” exhaust, and feel that I could fuel all night which I have at times, but wouldn’t need to if I was doing it full time.

Hey man 2 things I didn't hear you talk about maybe you had them on another video? but if you're not deleted You can do some serious damage to your plugs by Idling just for 30 minutes Just something to consider, Another thing a lot of guys have said that it takes about 10 gallons of fuel which is roughly $20 I'm from the South so I really don't mind the heat but in the cold weather I have a 0 Degree sleeping bag and periodically I will crank up the truck once or twice through the night, Another thing that's good if you have to have the heat are the AC is a Honda generator They cost about $800 but they're really quiet small and light and takes about 2 gallons of Gas which is about $3 through the night and a plug in heater are a plugin fan.

it's hard on the engine. a good compromise is a diesel generator with heat and air tied to it.I forgot to mention that lower rpm idle or even higher rpm idle doesn't keep the oil pressure up and the lower operating temperature allows more soot and contamination of the oil

I’ve got the 2019 ram with 1231 drive hours and 255 idle hours, was curious about your hours. Thanks for all the help

Thanks for reaching out and asking those great questions! I use Rotella T6 5w-40 with Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer 10q of Oil 2q of Lucas with a Wix XP Filter. My oil analysis has come back excellent every time I have it tested, so I'm a believer in those products. I'm somewhere inbetween 15-25k miles. Generally closer to 25k though. Thanks man!!

Danial, I know all trucks are different but do you have an idea of how much fuel your truck will use in 10 hours of idling in summer temperatures? I have a zero sleeping bag and sleep well in cold, but heat is a killer on my sleep!

Under decent circumstances, normal idle does the job I have found. And I mentioned this on another comment but I THINK that it’s around 5gal for 10hours.. that test I did at the beginning of driving so long ago, I don’t even remember the time of year or temp outside or whatnot but number 5 seems to be stuck in my mind for some reason. bear in mind your truck has a big engine. for idling that long the consumption is great. don't laugh i have a small diesel. bought since brand new, currently at 140.000 miles and the overnight idle is ridiculous. if the ac is on, it has high idle at about 1100 rpm to keep the water temperature high. it has about 4 liters (1 gallon ??) for 10 hours. i idle it during summer a lot. i did a full service check up at my mechanic. no issues found with the turbo, dpf was perfectly fine. just change the oil more ofter. if i had a diesel heater i wouldn't idle it that much

The regen system is killer to me. Idle for 2 hours makes the turbo close (exhaust brake) and the idle increase. I understand the idling, but ill take a honda generator with an AC unit in the back window.... Deleted, straight piped and a tune removing just the emissions is great to save then.

If there is a hotel to be had I would stay in a hotel. Club memberships is worth its weight in gold just like a fuel card. Nothing like sleeping in a bed, hot showers, continental breakfast with coffee. I can get that with an average of $75 a night. I don’t think you are saving that much by idle’n your truck all night. I do understand it does not make since to stay in a motel all the time. Either way it is a tax right off at the end of the year.

Ford and Gm tried the CP4 first with bad results and then Ram added the CP4 in 2019 with the same results. Bosh must have had a real good salesperson to get Ram to add the CP4 to its truck after it got such a bad name in Ford and GM.

John Vanderlip absolutely I do! Although to be fair, I plan my trips to run through my home or at least not have to be out over night as much as maybe others are so take that for what it is. There’s only been a few times I’ve had to buy a shower but honestly they sometimes just give you a free shower at the register instead of paying the $14 fee. I’ve been shocked a few times by that, or a trucker behind me who has dozens and dozens who gives me one of his out of the kindness of his heart. I’m always grateful for that!

Jeffrey Begeman I’m never on the road on a Sunday and my church for the longest time has had Wednesday night services(which I rarely ever missed) unless my trip had an interruption/delay. We have since changed to Thursday nights so in the future I’d be free and willing if I were on the road at that time and new of a place. When my original Ford 6.0 blew up the 1st month I started this job, I found a church in Rolla, MO I went to while I was stranded for 8 days. They were the most loving folks and just the encouragement I needed in that difficult time.

I am not currently driving over the road. But when I had my semi. I bought a small honda generator and used a small space heater at night. Now a days, semis have built in ones. But my idling at not was a gallon per hour at $2.75-3.00 a gallon.

I meant to tell you that I have been talking with Synergy this past week. The recruiter that I spoke with was very helpful and polite. She answered several questions and emailed me some helpful information. What time of the year would suggest to start ? I will be ready to go in a few weeks. But I must say I am a little hesitant. erik christensen that’s a response that will take a full series of videos (which I’ve been dreading to make haha) but I’ll try to just give the highlights. We can drive 11hours a day inside of a 14hour window, then we have to take a 10hour break. The 14 window includes pre trip inspection, picking up, fueling, the 30min break (which has to be taken within the 1st 8 hours of driving to break up your 11hours of driving) post trip inspection, drop off, and anything related to “working”. I will be making a series of some kind in the future going through all of this is detail but it’s going to be so much work and time. It will take me a long time to work through it. Hopefully this summary answer helped though!

I try never to idle ..... it clogs your DPF and carbons up your engine plain and simple. I have been driving since 1979 and since the DPF and SCR filters aka Smog motors, it will destroy your engine minute by minute

Isn't it cheaper to put on a diesel coolant heater on your truck then your idea

You would have to power that heater, as well as power your auxiliary battery all night for it to not drain the whole system, to run your fan to blow the heat throughout the cab. I’m not sure where you’re gonna plug in or get power from unless it’s a generator. Then you’re back to using fuel, just at a slightly lower level. If I missed something, let me know. Hey there, I am subscribed on another name also, SO does DOT allow your sleeper? Or do they care because you are by yourself? I was going to let wife drive deadhead while I sleep. But team drivers have to take the insides out of rear doors to be in compliance.

DOT does not consider our backseats a sleeper BESIDES a Ram megacab due to the dimensions. If you are alone and no one else is driving, you can sleep in the back and it's no problem. Officers expect us to be sleeping back there and don't say a word about it.

Wow no money in what you do domino effect humm make you not have a stained shirt. Be professional or ne unprofessional. I say don't idle get hotel as this guy can't afford a unstained shirt. I don't idle I have a apu and drive a 780 vnl. Bed and workstation. 1,078,595 miles no inframe and burns zero oil... 300k rev is a fail in one year.
