I’m a 27 year old straight male and was brought to tears by this story, both the end of the movie and book tore open my heart, especially the way the book ends. I love that this is a story about two human beings that are infatuated with each other and end up falling in love, there are no labels on what type of love which I feel is how love really happens, we fall in love with all sorts of people, men and women, it’s the human condition, love is love is love. I can’t wait until society stops putting down certain types of love because they are afraid of what others think, you live once, so live, love, and love some more, regardless of what society says about your particular brand of love!

this book/movie completely changed me. It's so raw, beautiful, and true. It changed my perspective on love. Sometimes the person you love isn't going to be in your life forever. And you can have the most epic and powerful love that lasts for a short period of time and still think back on it years and years later. It shows how people come into your life at the right time and for the right reasons. I will forever love this story.

The book, the book!! The first time I read it, I was so absorbed and I had to take a minute to put it down to process my feelings because I couldn’t understand why I was crying so much about it. So I read it again. I read it twice in a week. And then I watched the movie. What’s so remarkable about the story is how like you said, it transcends time. Also it was a safe space for Elio and Oliver to explore their feelings for each other. I marked my favourite passages of the book, but my one personal favourite was “cor cordium, heart of hearts, I’ve never said anything truer in my life to anyone.” I enjoyed the movie tremendously, unforgettable performances that make you ache for the characters knowing what is to come. Also I wanted to add, I watched Moonlight the other day, and it was a contrast to this movie. Still beautiful but heartbreaking for similar yet different reasons. Thank you for your review on the book and movie. It’s one that resonates long after you read and watch it.

I'm a huge movie geek but I've never been able to just name one movie that is my favorite. Until I experienced 'Call Me By Your Name'. I too read the book first and then watch the movie twice and bout to watch it the third time this weekend. Looking back, I would recommend for people to read the part 1 of the book first, then watch the movie, then read the rest of the book, then watch the movie again and repeat until whole of eternity. It has become my bible for life, the way I choose to deal with love and pain is very similar to what Elio's dad's monologue was about. To read it and then watch it being put into unbelievably beautiful words, it blew me away. The peach scene... I've since thought about getting a peach tattoo, cos it packs so much more meaning for me. It wasn't the naughty act itself, but it's expressing one's sexuality and doubting it, and feeling maybe shame but then have someone to take it all as it is... I mean, don't we all long to find our Oliver who would just take a big bite out of our version of the peach? :P CMBYN is now my favorite emotion in the world, and I probably would make it into a tradition to read the book and watch the movie at least once a year. And of course, shamelessly pimp it to everyone that I know and meet. Thanks for the great review. I never get tired of listening to other people gush over it. :)

It is fascinating to see how often people use the word "obsessed" with this movie (the book is on its way). I saw it for the first time and was taken back to my 19 year old self in 1967. Yes, we oldies had gay romances & sex lives back then, although it was certainly illegal here in New Zealand until 1986. My story does not follow Elio's, but I have experienced most if not all of his emotions and my version of some of the odd stuff. No fruit! I'm not sure I want a sequel, as that last scene at the fireplace mirrored the endpoint of several romances for me. Devastated, but you have to pick yourself up and carry on. I didn't realise I would ever turn into one of those geeks who looks for continuity lapses in movies, but I find I have, as I watch and re-watch this wonderful piece. The story is almost irrelevant. It is distillation of youthful emotions during first love, and my identification has been far more than I would ever have imagined. For heaven's sake, I'll be 70 this year, and yet my memories have roared back to allow me to relive those times - good and bad - and to realise how they made me who I am today. And in 2 days time I celebrate my 40th anniversary with my guy! Thanks for that great review

Great review! This film has really got into my head big time and I'm definitely going to read the book. I think the universal appeal with this story is that we all are at the mercy of time. We all have experienced the fleeting nature of summer. We all have missed opportunities, wasted time, or hesitated making our feelings known. But for Elio and Oliver the stars align, just the right chords are struck and a beautiful romance unfolds. In those few short weeks they experience so much joy and happiness that time seems to slow down, and they share a little piece of eternity. But nothing gold can stay, time is their enemy and as quickly as it began, it's all over...

I finished reading the book yesterday and it makes me feel better to read these comments, to see that people felt the same way I did after finishing it- heartbreak, catharsis, loss-for-words. I cried during the entire last part of the book and when I mean crying- I don't mean silent tears, and after I was done, I wanted to reread it immediately but at the same time, lock it somewhere and never touch it again- it was so painfully beautiful to read and to feel. The way Andre Aciman played with time, mortality and the transience of love shattered me. I can't get Elio's words out of my head, that he said to Oliver 20 years after their love affair: "You are the only person I'd like to say goodbye to when I die, because only then will this thing I call my life make any sense. And if I should hear that you died, my life as I know it, the me who is speaking with you now, will cease to exist". I still have to tell myself every 2 minutes that this is fiction. Elio felt so real, so relatable- I could relate to ever single one of his emotions and I felt them like he was a part of me. This book made me understand the power and beauty of words, of love and of time. I don't think I will get over this in the near future- I can't explain what it did to me.

Thanks for a great review, Tiernan. Haven't read the book, and now I will. I wasn't prepared to be as affected by the film as I was, and am. The film triggered feelings I haven't felt in decades. I've been mugged by my own ghosts! Elio's twirl after reading Oliver's "date-night" note is the best, isn't it? There are so many beautiful small moments in this film that it really deserves more than one viewing. Today, I'm taken with a moment that occurs as they're hiking up the mountainside. In an impulsive, puppy-like burst of feeling, Elio runs back to Oliver to grab his hair and stroke his face. Then he's off and running up the mountain again. The moment is quick, full, and incredibly sweet. This is Elio's story, so it's easy to get caught up in Timmy's astonishing work, especially on seeing the film for the first time. With subsequent viewings, I've found myself equally moved by Armie's complex, layered, and vulnerable performance. Together, these guys slayed me. But the whole cast is ace. Ditto the direction, the cinematography, and the score. If anyone young is reading this, pay attention to Professor Perlman. Don't waste time, and don't hold back! You'll be old sooner than you can believe. (Sez one who knows.) ; ) Thanks again for a terrific review!

Thanks for your review. I am a new subscriber, 57 yo woman, and watched the movie on Jan 1st 2021. I didn´t even know what was all about, but...here we go. I loved it from minute 1 and since then, as many people I am reading in thousands of comments, I can´t stop thinking of that movie. Then I watched thousands of posts with interviews from all these nearly 4 years that have passed since the movie. I have seen their love out of the screen, everybody talking about their bromance in real life.... and I totally UNDERSTAND WHY. I have then listened to the audiobook narrated by Armie and I UNDERSTOOD EVEN BETTER. The story caught them straight away, and they were living that same story in real life. As Armie said in one of the interviews, it was his summer romance, but I know it was for both of them. I am pretty sure. Love is love is love is love. Now I ordered the book and would love to read it and listen to the audiobook at the same time. This is the BEST LOVE STORY I have read, watched, experienced and dreamed of in my entire life, and I CAN TELL YOU I am a real reader. This is not a gay movie, it is a LOVE movie. Two men in love. And I am thinking that so many people have been touched by the story because it tells the love story every one of us would love to live or have lived. That is the secret, I think. I could see the movie 40 more times and I am sure I will, for it is supreme, especially after having listened to the story in Armie´s/Oliver´s/Elio´s voice. No wonder they were soooooo well together after all. Thanks for reading all this lot. Love u all. xx

I read it about a week ago and just watched the film yesterday (planning to rewatch it tonight just cause lol) and yes I can entirely agree with everything you said. It's so beautiful and so raw and personal and never feels out of touch or out of place. I, being 17 like Elio and having erm may I say some similar thoughts uh *coughs*, could relate and find so much enjoyment in Elio over thinking every little action and movement or touch that Oliver makes. With regard to the movie, I loved the dreamy feel of how it played out. Having read the book before hand, of course I could pick up on all of their little actions and facial expressions and uh yes it was so perfect. The build up to the first kiss and specifically that entire scene were so faithful to the book and beautifully performed as well as filmed. Both the book and movie have truly had such an impact on my yet quite short life and I absolutely adored the ending to the book. The weekend I read it, I had tests just days away but it was all I could think about. It had such a control over me and I found myself entirely mirroring Elio's anxiety for Oliver's oncoming departure and even more for the oncoming end of the book which, when I did finish, I just lay their in bed letting the whole experience wash over me for minutes on end. Sorry this is so long, but ironically I amn't out yet meaning talking about this wonderful book and movie is quite hard without revealing why it means so much to me lol so I'm getting it all out here. It's only February and I'm pretty sure this will be my favourite book of the year. It was just. So. Good.

I literally cried with the father's speak at the end. English is definitely a beautiful language and the translation would be weird in french. Sorry about the mistakes and kiss from Versailles

I did it the other way around. Film first, book later. I'm glad I did because I had no insight into Elio's mind when I saw the movie so I was able to enjoy watching it with no pre-conceived ideas. Then I read the book and some points, barely touched in the movie that escaped me, made the novel even more enjoyable as to make me watch the film again. This time I knew what Elio was thinking. It was like watching two different movies. Love them "both". I think the film handled the ending very well not following the story further. I was Elio's age in the early 80's so it felt very personal too. Great review! Thanks.

I also just love deeply that every frase of the book and every scene of the movie are full of meaning and feelings.

I saw the movie before I read the book. I found that the Elio of the movie was somewhat different from the Elio in the book. The book Elio is a little "dark." The book contains some wonderful observations on human behavior and life. E.g. "How I loved the way he repeated what I myself had just repeated. It made me think of a caress, or of a gesture, which happens to be totally accidental the first time but becomes intentional the second time and more so yet the third." (p. 27) This was used in the Piave memorial scene when Oliver repeats Elio's line, "Because I thought you should know." Another thoughtful passage: " The word 'friendship' came to mind. But friendship, as defined by everyone, was alien, fallow stuff I cared nothing for. What I may have wanted instead, from the moment he stepped out of the cab to our farewell in Rome, was what all humans ask of one another, what makes life livable. It would have to come from him first. Then possibly from me." (p. 30) If a sequel is attempted, I don't think it should follow the one in the book. Times have changed since the book was written. Guys can get married now and work as a couple, at least here in New York. Columbia University and the city of New York is rich in possibilities for a sequel. One small complaint. On pages 201 and 220 of the Picador Movie Tie-in Edition, there are sentences containing "on account of because." I checked with a grammarian and he agreed that such is an error that should have been corrected by the copy editor. At this time (02/03/18) the Blu-ray version can be pre-ordered on Amazon.com. I've ordered a copy for myself and one for a friend who is unable to see it in a theater. Now that I have finished with the book, I will put it in one of the book stalls near a subway entrance to share with a stranger. I contains many underlined and highlighted passages. If you find a hardcover, first edition at a flea market, snatch it up. They are selling for over $800.00!

I agree with your first lines. I also feel like book Elio and movie Elio are a bit different. Movie Elio just seemed starstruck and in love with Oliver, while book Elio seemed more obsessive and indeed sometimes darker. Especially the part where {minor 'spoiler', nothing big, but don't read if you want to know as little as possible} he's thinking he wouldn't mind Oliver being dead and enjoyed thinking about his body on the bottom of the ocean. I couldn't imagine Elio from the movie having a thought like that. That part was so strange and I didn't understand the meaning behind it. With the book I also sometimes felt like what Elio felt for Oliver wasn't love so much as heavy infatuation/obsession, the memories of which he later glorified or romanticized. It was only in the last part of the book, I felt, that it became clear it was more than that and there were actual deep feelings involved. The last chapter was by far the best imo, and the only part that could match (or even surpass) the movie in my experience.

I'm not much of a movie person so I came really late to this one (August 2022) I really enjoyed the movie, it's definitely not the typical love story. Not because its two guys but because it doesn't follow all the "standard procedures" of a love story, it's definitely not predictable. The story touched me on a personal level (for hopefully obvious reasons) and I really connected to Elio because he and I have a very similar personality. It's like I felt all the feelings he felt throughout the whole movie. The thing that got me the most was the phone call at the end when he said "Elio" I just couldn't hold it back. I felt that so hard. Incredible acting and incredible director. Love this movie and I'm showing it to everyone. I will check out the book because I just need more.

You captured that jarring feeling of seeing the film for the first time after being an avid fan of the book. The difference in personal narration as translated into subtle body language was amazing. I personally connected to the thought processes. The wanting and longing and waiting and meaning making of small things the power of a glance and the impact of a touch the strength of emotion and the devastation. It was all there, like a microscope into the lives of people who were analogous to me. I love both the movie and the novel for the different ways they captured that feeling, not completely different, but not the same at all. This experience, the book and the movie, has been the highlight of the past couple months. It definitely changed me.

I love this book and movie. I think about it every day. I can connect to it because, like the movie, I’m bisexual. It makes me cry, only because I’m not a confident as Elio or Oliver. I like to fantasize about finding a romance like there’s.

Written with a gorgeous lyricism that exudes warmth and wistfulness, joy and heartache, very beautifully and poetically written. I had a great time reading it and will read more from the author. Five pure stars, thanks !

The first time I watched the film was 2 months ago without reading the book nor listening to the audiobook. I was blown away by the story ,the performance, the music and the cinematography. Then I listened to the audiobook right after. I watched the film the second time within that a week. This time I had more appreciation more on all the details in the film. I understood more what was going inside Elio's head. I've been obsessed with it for more than 2 months now. I find the audiobook twice then the paperback. And I cried like hell when I read the last 2 pages of the book. And I'm straight. This is one of my favorite films and novels like top 5.

I thought the way that the film was edited really helped convey that sense of time ebbing and flowing. The sudden jump cuts interspersed between some of the scenes really emphasised the whole "is it a video" theme, and it's especially noticeable because of the almost unnaturally long takes in each scene. And how he remembers certain moments with such clarity that it feels like he (and consequently us) feel like we're there. The camera lingers on every movement, sound and emotion that crosses the actors' faces, before abruptly cutting to the next formative experience of their relationship. It's MASTERFUL. What you said about the book feeling like a non-fiction diary, is so true! Both the book and the film feel freakishly realistic and honest. In the book I think that's mainly due to Elio's obsessive thought spirals, but in the film it's definitely Timothée Chalamet's performance that communicates every single contradictory thought so perfectly. I too feel like I benefited from reading the book first, because I found book quotes coming to mind whilst watching the film and was able to pick up subtleties in the acting that my mum and sister who hadn't read the book found confusing. I really love how they ended the film with Elio reminiscing about that summer, which acts as a nice little homage to the structure of the novel. God I could go on and on about what an absolute masterpiece this film is forever...

For me, the movie is all about watching the distinct and incredible sensitive view into 2 characters - especially Elio. Timmy's acting is so nuanced and responsive that it blows me away every time I see the movie. And the atmosphere in it is very free as well. It feels like being present in a very nice dream.

I read the book and just saw the film. The book of course touched me, I could feel Elio’s passion all throughout it. The film’s ending was so much more crushing in that final scene than it was to me in the book. In the book, I interpreted it that there was an amicable understanding that Elio and Oliver would not end up together. Timothée was so so effective in that last scene, you can feel his heart breaking right along with him. It left me so sad for an entire day. What an impactful film.

I just saw the movie today. It finally rolled into my Midwestern city. Watched every interview with the director and cast until a week ago. Wanted that out of my head. This was a gay love story where no one gets hurt or killed. There is no bashing, no preacher father or cheated-on wife. Its a slow, but not too slow paced movie. Disappointed the sex scenes were subdued. A slow fade to a window was very 1940s. But, the movie met all of my sky high expectations. Now I have to order the book.

I've been nodding during the whole video, totally agreeing with your words. I just can't stop talking about CMBYN with all my friends and family. A lot of people are obsessed with this story and I mean both the film and the book. It is the same story, but told in such a different ways, because when you're reading you imagine all those things, but in the film they're shown by actors. And these actors though... Their action was so perfect, Armie and Timothee just feel characters and have a true connection. I guess, I loved this story this much, because it's all about emotions. You get to experience your first love again with Elio and everything feels just so right.

Your review is so spot on! I completely understood what you meant about the private connection of some sort. I really felt the movie and the book, on how it was intricately depicted and how it brought my senses to different levels of emotions. I hugged my book almost after the last line on the last page. I cried when I saw the movie. You are right, this is the kind of book and movie, that I will repeat just because I wanted to undergo the experience, again and again and again. :)

** Thanks for your reaction to both Andre Asiman's brilliant and beautiful novel and Luca Guadagnino and James Ivory's gorgeous film. *** It's funny, I did the same thing (late in the game) I read the novel (not quite to the end) and then went to see the film. And you're So right, it does feel extremely personal and intimate! This goes for both the book and the film for almost very really different reasons. The novel is a journey purely through the eyes, senses and mind of Elio and his memory of that idyllic summer. The film that Luca created was so very sensuous, nature was definitely a character and you felt like you were there with Elio and Oliver present in that summer. (The audiobook is also awesome after both book and movie to hear Armie Hammer giving us Elio's view of everything!) What you said about so many people connecting to this story and this film ... it shouldn't surprise us that such a tender and real depiction of first love moves people. But undeniably if you come from a Queer perspective and experience there might be that added dimension of "Yes! Thank you!" How and when is Love anything but Love? And the desire part that Luca and Timothee and Armie capture "feels" natural, true and real. And Professor Perlman (Michael Stuhlbarg who is heart-breakingly phenomenal) and his talk with Elio! That was beyond describing! I was a mess each time watching that and reading it too. I totally enjoyed your video, so thanks for sharing your experience.

Well, I've seen the movie 3 times, including a premiere in Paris with Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer where they talked about all sorts of aspects of the filming and their relationship. What impresses me about this is that they have been on the road promoting the movie for more than a year now and they still manage to sound fresh. I guess that's what the word "professional" means.
@bluboy4ver27 жыл бұрын
I agree experiencing both the film and the book elevates the story to another level and they almost felt like a conversation between the two mediums. The last thing Oliver says to Elio on the phone in the film seems like a direct response to the very last line of the book.

I wanted to see the movie when it came out but didn’t get a chance to see it and now it’s no longer playing. So I decided to read the book and fell in love with it that I’m now desperate to watch the movie. I heard the soundtrack right after I finished the book and now am obsessed with Sufjan Stevens three songs, especially Mystery of Love and Visions of Gideon because they fit the story perfectly. I liked that they never mentioned love but you knew exactly that that’s what they felt. It’s such a beautiful love story and one that I’ll definitely read over and over.

It really is a book for non-avid readers! (Not a big fan of reading myself 😅) I too loved and appreciated the book and audiobook, even after watching the movie first. You just feel a mixture of emotions through it all and its so relatable in so many ways. I thought the movie had the perfect cast; the acting, cinematography, soundtrack, and onscreen chemistry were all superb and the book is just beautifully written and author has a true gift for using words. I’m so mentally and emotionally invested in the story and CAN NOT detach myself from it all....I’m obsessed! Love it! 😭😍😂❤️

@tiernanbe Thank you for your insight into both the book and the movie. You have pretty much just said exactly what is in my head out loud. I’ve read the book twice and seen the movie at the cinema twice and it is just incredible. Like you and most of the people on here, this story blew me away. The story, the location, the timeframe, the people, the language, the relationships between Oliver and Elio; Prof. Perlman and everyone; Elio and his mum; Marzia and Elio; Elio and his dad. So touching. This book is a masterpiece and the film is a masterpiece in itself. I can’t get enough of it. Just so special. What struck me, was the way I reacted to it. I cried when I read the book, I cried even harder when I watched the movie. But more interestingly was the fact that for the few weeks that followed reading and watching, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Elio and Oliver particularly. I mean every day and all day. No matter what I was doing at home or at work I thought about them constantly. I’ve never been affected by anything in such a way. I love a love story between any two people but this was and is special and I won’t ever quite look at life in the same way again. Very profound.

this video was so good, i really enjoyed you talking about both the book and movie!! i recently watched the movie and i was just transported. i think why i adored it so much is how the relationship between the two felt so inexplicably organic and honest and clumsy and intense. the directing of the movie definitely helped create that, with the use of shots used, but it was also just the openness of the actors too, to be able to portray and feel safe to explore their characters sexuality and sensuality. plus the fathers dialogue at the end, whoa, left me thinking about it for days.

Hi, your review was insightful. Thanks for sharing. I connected to this on so many levels. I came out in 1982. In 1983, I was 20; between Oliver and Elio's age. I read the book a decade ago and saw the movie recently. I can understand Elio's memories. I could have stepped through the screen and fit back into 1983 LOL Yet the story is timeless.

i haven't read the book yet (fake fan ugh), but i saw the film with my best friend and we both came out of it completely destroyed. as a queer person, it was so wonderful to see a coming of age story be told so beautifully, and in what feels like the same way a straight romance would be told, because there are far too many coming of age tragedies told. i mean obviously it's important to recognize the struggles of queer people, but it felt so refreshing to have a story where no one was dying or getting shit kicked. the fact that it took place in a time where being queer was seen in such a negative light made the story even more meaningful to me. the ending of the film felt tragic-and maybe it is and isn't-but i should really read the book as i'm sure it will offer more about the ending than the film haha. honestly, i still can't believe the film exists in the way it does because it was just so beautiful. It felt like a /film/, and I'm still not over the acting, especially Timothee's. He really brought Elio to life, and while I believe the other actors in the film did just as great, there was something about Timmy as Elio that went the extra mile. i'm very glad you made this video, and that you liked the film as well! i can't wait to read the book to drink in more of that world, and tbh i don't think i'm ever going to get over this story.

I have suggested to friends who haven't read the book, to see the movie first. I usually suggest just the opposite with movies made from books. But for this, it's great to watch the external story and then read the internal thoughts about what you just witnessed. I had read the book when it first came out about 10 years ago but much of it had faded in my memory. So, when I saw the movie, I then went back and read the book again and it was amazing to, sort of get inside the action. By the way, when you said, "This book is why words exist", I thought that was a genius way to describe it.

Wow you did good at reviewing this. Unlike you i watched the movie first then read the book. The writing style is kind of new to me i found some difficulties to seperate which part of elio’s imagination, which he want to be happend, and the one that actually happend, so i’m thankful that i watched the movie first, in fact i watch it multiple times and loving it. Totally agree that andre aciman write it more like non fiction book than fiction book. I’m ashamed of myself because i just read it this year tho i know it got hype when the movie release just because i have this paradigm of LGBT relationship, afraid that i’d acounter some part that i’m uncomfortable to encounter (if that makes sense to you) but this book is soooo pretty. It’s so mature (that what i’d call it) in term of love. Doesn’t really need to say i love you to understand each other feeling and that part when elio talks about it to oliver is one of my fave part.

A little late to the party here but still want to tell you why I connected with the story: I'm a 35 years old straight woman and it doesn't matter that it's a gay love story. First of all, it's just beautifully written. Besides that, it reminded me of how I would analyse the boys I liked in my teens, it reminded me of specific diary entrys I wrote about them and it made me realize, that this is a thing some people do. I also realized that I was the object of this kind of loving analysis which for some reason is mind blowing and also kinda nice (I am still friends with a guy who liked me 13 years ago and he knows more about what I did and said at this time than I do). So it just feels very true to me, even though I never got close to the guys I liked like that 😄

To me, the father's monologue was great, but the part that got to me was when Elio opened up about his anxiety of never seen Oliver again, his first line in particular
@keeleystokes93076 жыл бұрын
I think the book especially is about what its like to be truly intimate with someone else to the extent that you feel more intimate with that person then you even do with your self. Elio says he's had love greater then with oliver but what was the most remarkable thing was the intimacy. And the last line 😢

Finally, someone who read the book! I am not even remotely close to a theater it's showing at but I have it on pre-order. I felt exactly like you did and that the book took you on a romantic journey along with the characters. I don't think the movie will win an Oscar because Hollywood still sees this subject as taboo but I hope I'm wrong. Finally, I wish the movie carried the same weight in the ending like the book. The script writer fashioned the characters as straight whereas the book leaned the other way. Open for discussion.
