Love this lens on my XT3. rarely use my canon full frame and 70-200F2.8L now except for portraits and family stuff. Fuji lenses are so sharp and the fact that even though the 100-400 lens is heavy it has nothing on the canon system. Im happy to carry this set up all day

And yes, a 100-400 in excellent condition would hold its value. $270 savings seems like a decent price, but a quick look at eBay shows used 100-400s for anywhere from the $1300-1600 range. You might shop around.

@@DanBaileyPhoto Hi Dan, first impressions: AF seems to be better than the 150-500, fast and accurate. At 400mm a bit soft wide open, tried to f/8 but had so bad light that ISO went to 1600 and more, not the best for X-T5... And the air over the water was a bit in motion, so all in all not the best conditions. I am in hospital tomorrow for a week maybe, after that I will make many more shots, am very happy with it all in all. And it is light and handy.

I agree, ISO 1600 isn't awesome with color on the X Series cameras, but it's not bad, considering how bad higher ISO performance used to be. It's still very usable, and for the most part, if you've got a great image, your viewers won't care one bit. And yes, "bad air" is definitely the bane of using really long lenses. They're great on cool, clear days, but when you have a lot of heat and humidity in the air, you're going to see that when you zoom all the way out. Anyway, keep having fun with the new lens!

Wildlife mostly. I do plan to take it to Yosemite next year for some "compressed" landscapes. I haven't been there for years, but made the limiting assumption that wide angle lenses where the way to go. This next time I'll use wide and telephoto!

Indeed. Wide angles are often the perceived go-to lenses for landscapes, but I love shooting nature with long lenses. There's a lot of creativity to be had compressing distant backgrounds behind your subject and bringing things up close.

You do a great job of confirming what Anybody with an open mind will admit - It's a superb lens. I bought mine ~4 years ago, with the 1.4 t/c, & it's turned me into a dedicated coastal & surfing snapper. I have an x-t3, 16-55 & 50-140; giving me uninterrupted 16-560mm in a Lowepro Slingshot 202 bag, which I don't need to put down on the sand to change lenses. All in all, the perfect system for what I do, and I'm constantly asked how I get every droplet of spray so sharp - I don't; it's all down to the glass.

This video just popped up on my yootoob, so thought I'd do a bit of an update... When fuji released the 150-600 I was seriously tempted, but decided to see what real-world users would report: Well, already unconvinced by the bigger lens' light-gathering, have only found 1 genuine comparison of iq, which seemed that, if there honestly is any improvement it's not significant, even when using the 1.4 t/c. The final nail in the coffin has been that the new lens is just too big for my modus operandi - I have 7🙄 gear bags & it'll only fit in 1 of them & then off-body. As I'm an extremely mobile 'tog, riding an Ebike around our local surfing hotspots & estuary/riverside trails, I frequently keep the long lens attached. As a final update, my shiny new x-t5 arrived a couple of weeks ago & now I know, for sure, I made the right decision: The new body & the old lens are superb together.

My 100-400mm lens stays permanently mounted to my Fuji xt4 and i have every Fuji lens except the new 70-300mm but I can say that over the 5 years of owning Fuji cameras and lenses is that ive shot my favourite images with this amazing lens and it’s super light to carry than the full frame equivalents!!! So I take it on holiday all the time where as my friends full frame gear they have to leave behind due to the weight of their gear

Hi Geoff, thanks for your comment. I too am curious about the 70-300 but I do know that it will be very similar to the 55-200. It's essentially the same design, but with weather sealing and it's able to use the Fujifilm teleconverters. The 100-400 is definitely a unique lens in the line. It's certainly bigger and heavier, but it does have some real strengths, including that super fast autofocus.

Jon, the 70-300 is a great lens, but as you'll soon discover, the 100-400 is much more capable with regards to speed and autofocus performance. Having both lenses would be great, but if you can only have one and you're a serious shooter, or if you shoot action and fast moving subjects, the 100-400 is ultimately the better choice. What kinds of subjects to you shoot?

Like I said, you're going to love the 100-400. Sure, it's a little bigger and heavier than the 70-300, but if you leave the tripod collar off, it's pretty manageable when you're carrying it around.

Its a great lens, light, reasonable fast AF and sharp wide open. Unfortunately I seem to struggle in low light conditions with wildlife photography. Above iso 3200 the images are muddy and high shutter speeds are required most of the time to prevent motion blur. My Nikon Z7 with the 300mm 2.8 and 1.4 extender is heavy but under these conditions the photos are significantly sharper with much less noise and more contrast. Even when I crop to the same field of view. The AF-C is better on the XT3 and the frame rate is higher but I have more shots in focus in low light conditions with the Nikon. Still the Fuji is used the most because of weight, but very often I wish I had my Nikon with me.

Morné, thanks for your comment. That always is the trade off. A bigger sender can often produce less noise at higher ISO settings, but with the newer Fujis, that’s becoming less of an issue. There definitely is a loss of “crispness” above 3200 (I see that as the sweet spot for high ISO), but I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how well the X-T3/4 perform in this area, especially with the higher quality lenses like the 100-400. At the same time, the technology can’t do everything, and sometimes you have to live with the compromise of bigger heavier gear, or a slight increase in noise. However, as I like say, noise is not the enemy, especially if you have a killer image.

Unfortunately I sometimes have issues with the focus system where it chooses to focus on the background instead of the subject on which the single focus point was set. I am still trying to figure out if this a user error or a focus issue.

That's a totally different issue. Focus can be really tricky, especially when you have moving subjects in busy backgrounds. That takes A LOT of practice and knowing the system really well. Seriously drooling here, but on the other hand, I used a 150-600 on my Nikon D750 for a while and found that I didn't really used it often enough. Obviously, that's a far larger and heavier lens, but when I look at how much use I get from my three Fujifilm zoom lenses, I find that the 18-55 gets used the most often, then comes the 10-24, and finally, the 55-200. I guess I prefer wide to tele, but when I'm back in the US this fall, I may try to rent the 100-400 for a few days to see how I feel about it. Anyway, every time I watch one of your videos, you give me something to think about. Thanks for that!

@@DanBaileyPhoto I absolutely love the 10-24 (I have the original one, not the new version). Extremely sharp; when I switched from the Nikon D750, I needed something to replace my Nikon 16-35 lens, and the 10-24 is it. The Nikon lens was tack sharp, and I was hoping for a similar performance from the Fuji. I was not disappointed. To open up interior spaces or for general landscape photography, I love this lens. Still, my main lens is the 18-55 which is amazingly versatile and lightweight. Often, it's even the only lens I take with me. I would love to get the XF 27mm f/2.8 R (the new version with the "real" aperture ring) because it strikes me as a perfect walkabout lens. I also like the 40mm equivalent; I always thought 35mm was a bit too wide and 50mm a tad to narrow. 40mm seems a near-perfect compromise. Maybe one of these days...

Agree with all you say Dan - if you are looking for a list of the most used lenses for the Fuji X series I would get this lens second after my most used, the Fuji 35mm f1.4 prime (the equivalent to a full frame 'nifty fifty') - on an XT body that small incredibly sharp and fast lens gets used more by me than any other for just walking around, travelling, indoors anywhere really - but the 100-400 is second. Third might be the 16-55mm zoom. Also, If you are a Fuji shooter on a budget, try buying second hand old school non autofocus primes and zooms from say Nikon, Asahi Pentax Minolta (oldies but goodies) - yes you will need a (cheap) adapter to mount them to an X series, and you will have to manually focus, but its a really cost effective way of getting a lens set together - and the glass might be old but they still work really well on a Fuji - more wicked fun as you say Dan, for not much $ !

I have both a Fuji XT-2 and XT-3 (used mainly for street photography); do you think this Fuji 100-400mm would work well with the XT-3 for photographing wild owls in flight? I usually shoot using a large Canon 500mm on a dslr; Ive not gone Canon mirrorless yet. I thought it could be useful/practical to use what I have already (silent shutter is the priority and shooting mostly handheld) Or would the Fuji 150-600mm be the better option? Hey there, thanks for your comment. Yes, the 100-400 is an exceptional long lens for the X Series. It's perhaps the fastest AF long zoom lens in the entire line. I've used the 100-400 heavily ever since the X-T2 and have been incredibly happy with the results. The 150-600 is also an excellent lens, and it has the switch for AF/AF Lock/AF Preset, and of course, a longer focal length. The 100-400 does have advantages. It packs quite a bit much smaller than the 150-600, and it's one stop faster. I've used both for photographing birds and have seen excellent performance. In my mind, the 100-400 is more versatile, though, especially if you add the 1.4X TC. If you want the extra length without having to use the Teleconverter, then the 150-600 would be a better choice.

Lee, thanks for your comment. The 100-400 is capable of getting very sharp image, but it does take good technique. Even with stabilization, it helps to brace the camera or use a tripod, and use as high a shutter speed as possible. Also, be aware of air temperatures and distance. On very warm days, you'll only be able to shoot so far without getting heat shimmers that will soften the photo. Not a bad thing, but just something to be aware of. On cool and cold days, this won't be a factor, and you can get sharper images at greater distance. Hope that helps. What kinds of wildlife do you like to photograph?

Lee, the 100-400 is indeed a great lens for shooting portraits. Regarding image softness at higher ISO settings, there are always compromises when shooting in challenging conditions, and in dim light, your options can be limited. The best way to ensure maximum sharpness is to try shoot against brighter backgrounds with faster shutter speeds at lower ISO, which might necessitate looking for different vantage points or shooting at different times of day. Or just living with the slight limitations, and realizing that if you capture an incredible moment, it won’t really matter much. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your comment. I've found it to be sharp all the way out to 400. That said, if there is any humidity or excessive heat in the air, this will definitely soften long telephoto images. The further out you zoom, the more this effect is magnified, so that could be what you're seeing. What kinds of subjects have you shot with it?

Hi Robert, thanks for your comment. I would agree, we all have our limits and ideas about which lenses would serve us best for the cost. Hi Chuck, thanks! Hmmm... that's a tough one. If it were me, and I was only taking one lens, a middle focal length seems like a good choice, like the 35. However, it also depends on what you think you'll be shooting. For landscape and grand vistas, I'd go wide angle, and for details, a short telephoto like the 50 or 90 might come in handy. Arild, it depends on which camera I'm using. The newer models, (X-T3 and later), have faster read electronic shutters, so they actually do better with fast moving subjects. That's a great combination, and you should be able to get good results, but yes, the X-T3 and 4 both have the improved electronic shutters and the PRE-SHOT ES feature. This is really a powerful setting for capturing flying birds. So if you're really into that kind of photography, it would be a worthy investment to upgrade to one of those two models.

Nice review. I'm torn between getting this or waiting for the 150-600 when it comes out next year. As I like to shoot wildlife, I think I will wait to see how much the 150-600 costs (the 150-600 may not be that far off the cost of the 100-400 with a teleconverter..at least that's what I'm hoping!).

Hi Tim, thanks for your comment. I just saw the X Summit video announcement for the 150-600. I imagine that it will be a ways off, but I'm sure it will be an amazing lens. There's also the new 70-300, which is an incredible offering, especially for the price. Coupled with the TC, it's even more powerful. @@DanBaileyPhoto I have an XT-30. I like to shoot landscape and wildlife, but perfer wildlife photography. Longest focal length I have is 230mm lens, which is not enough for bird photography (especially birds of prey that are usually quite far away and cropping too much just results in poor image quality.). Yeah not sure if I can wait for the 150-600mm fuji lens, I'm hoping it will be released early next year. Also will depend on the weight, as I like to walk around 15-20 miles so hopefully it's not too much heavier than the 100-400mm lens (I like the exercise with the extra weight carrying camera gear, but don't want to break my back!).

Cool. My guess is that the 150-600 will be at least a similar size/weight than the 100-400, if not a little bigger and heavier. Also, looking at the design, which appears similar to the XF200 f/2, my guess is that it will be considerably more expensive. I’ve shot birds with numerous Fuji lenses, and I’ve found the 100-400 w/ 1.4 TC to be the best/fastest combo.

Hey there. The 1.4x TC is an essential companion for the 100-400. It extends the reach with no loss of sharpness, and only 1 (almost negligible) stop of light. I absolutely recommend the 1.4x with this lens over the 2x, which loses two stops and starts to lose a bit of sharpness. Were you able to get some really good shots with it on your safari?

Happy new year, Carlos and thanks for the comment. Not sure what your issue is, but even though the X-T4 is a faster AF camera, the X-T2 is still very capable with regards to autofocus, especially when using the 100-400 lens. I've had very good results shooting action with that combination. Make sure the camera is set to AF-C and the Drive Dial is set to CH. Also, try playing around with the AF-C Custom Settings. I find that using setting #2 and #4 can sometimes give you better results, depending on what you're shooting. What kinds of subjects are you photographing where you're seeing this happen?

@@DanBaileyPhoto Thanks for your quick reply! I'm spotter. I sold all my Canon equipment and start with Fuji. I had the Fuji x-t2 and the 16-55mm. I've just added the 50-140 and the 100-400. The last one, especially for my hobby. If I shoot when the plane is in front of me everything works fine but when the plane is coming to me I can see how the camera lost the focus and the lens seems slow. And thought that the xt4 can fix this or maybe change the AF tracking to 4 but a plane hasn't an erratic moviment. Cheers

Carlos, photographing planes can be hard. They're often quite small in the viewfinder, and sometimes they don't have a huge amount of contrast against the sky. Also, objects moving towards or away from you are much harder to shoot, as they camera has to constantly make calculations and adjustments to compensate for the continuous change in distance from the camera. That said, the X-T4 will certainly have a faster, more accurate AF system than the X-T2. Also, the 100-400 lens does have a very fast AF motor, but that kind of subject will still be challenging to capture. Dominik, thanks for your comment. I’ve used this lens with numerous Fuji bodies over the years, from X-T2 on. I’m currently using it with the X-T3 and 4. And yes, I do a ton of AF-C with this lens. I’m sorry to hear that you’re having AF issues. The X-T30 has the exact same AF system as the X-T3, and AF is not affected by the use of the teleconverter, so, in theory, you should be getting the same performance. However, there are a number of factors that can affect AF performance, and often times this has to do with practice and understanding the limitations of the system, based on what you’re shooting. What kinds of moving subjects do you typically photograph where this is an issue?

Christiano, that might come down to preference and the capacity of your camera bag. Both are very good lenses, but a big factor is that The 150-600 has an internal zooming mechanism, so even at 150mm, the barrel remains at a fixed length of 12.4 inches long (314mm). When the 100-400 is locked at the shortest 100mm setting, it's only 8.3 inches long (94mm). The 150-600 has an incredible range, but it requires a much larger bag/pack to carry this lens with you. Thanks for your comment. The 70-300 is very similar to the 55-200. It's essentially the same design, with a longer focal length, teleconverter compatibility and weather sealing. The 100-400 with the 55-200 would certainly give you more options than just having 70-300 if considering that route. That's my 2 cents.

I have the 100-400 but not the 50-200 and am considering the 50-200. I use the hell put of my 100-400 and the 1.4tc. For sports and wildlife and things that need that focal length. I do want something that has the front end of that focal length that's just smaller for doing more general purpose stuff. Kids outside, less serious sports, stuff like that. Hope that helps.

Definitely!! The 100-400 is a very powerful and fast AF lens. I've used mine quite heavily with my X-T4 and have gotten excellent results. One thing to note, the 150-600 is about the same price, and with it, you get a bit more length and three Fn buttons on the lens that can be used to activate AF ON, AF Lock or AF Recall. The tradeoff is that it's one stop slower than the 100-400, and out has an internal zoom design, so it will always be the same length, and it's pretty long (12.4 inches.) The 100-400 will zoom in and out, so it's shorter when the barrel is all the way zoomed in. This gives it a little bit more flexibility for packing, since it will fit a rider range of camera bags. They're both great lenses, but I can say that I do love my 100-400. Hope that doesn't complicate your decision too much. What kinds of subjects would you be looking to shoot with it?

Yep, it is a stunningly sharp lens, along with the 50-140, an integral part of my sports/action kit. That said, after the sales flop if the 200 f2, it looks as if Fuji is not going to pursue this segment (sports/photojournalism), where big glass lives.

I also love my 100-400mm and rumors have it, we will see a 150-600mm in 2022. With the 2/200mm shot themself into the foot. Somebody should have told them that the equivalent 2.8/300mm has been fallen out of favor for most pros many years ago. Either a 1.4/135mm for fashion or a compact and light f4 or 5.6 400/500/600mm (P/DO) lens would have been much more attractive for most of their potential clients. I can get along nicely with zooms but I sometimes miss the pinpoint sharpness of a prime in my 100-400mm at its longest setting.

Thanks for your comment. Having used this lens extensively, and I'm pretty rough on my gear, I find absolutely no discrepancies in quality with the XF100-400. On the contrary, it's an excellent optic that's constructed with enough metal in the barrel to make it tough, and enough lightweight plastic in non-stress areas to save weight. Have you had specific build/failure issues with yours?

The lens is impressive, and I've used it for some years - but you twice describe the lens as of all metal construction. It clearly is not. Most obviously, the zoom extending barrel is plastic. Further, as to its physical robustness, the ribbed rubber rings that cover the zoom and focus barrel have loosened with time/use and will both buckle and ride along the barrel; that has been a great disappointment in a red-label lens.

Barbara, thank for your comment. Yes, you are correct. As with all modern professional-grade lenses, there is some polycarbonate used in the construction of Fuji's 100-400, which helps save weight, without compromising durability of the lens. Metal is used in the critical areas which have the potential for stress. Sorry for any confusion. Also, I'm sorry to hear that you're having issues with your own 100-400. I would suggest calling the Fuji tech line, which is 1-800-800-FUJI in the US. If the lens has some sort of defect, they should be able to help you.

I have had to engineer a decent fix on my own - which, while addressing the issue, has likely made resale highly problematic. (There is no need for you to respond to this; I note it simply to close the loop.)
