There's a few older KZbinrs I like to watch. Vlog brothers are in their 40s! The internet is getting older as we who use it are getting older. Someone said to me 30 year olds shouldn't be on Twitter. So where should I go in 2 years? To a cave? Nah.

@@juliasutter6996 LOL- it's tiring to see bait click videos. I just want to see factual information to inspire me to do stuff. Im 54 and love watching youtube. I can't understand what's going on in our society these days when 30 is over the hill so to speak. That is the age people are just beginning to grow up and become truly interesting. Even my son lamented turning 25 last year saying he was "old". What!? I just don't get it. I watch you tubers of all ages from college age to 60s. Love them all for different reasons. Keep doing what you do on this channel....love it so much. My kids in their 20s do too. Just sayin. Good information has no age limit. And you are fun to listen to and very intelligent. Keep rockin it.

It has to do with internet media mostly catering to young people, even though the internet as we know it is about 25 years old now. I'm in my later half of my 40s and I love playing video games, but I'm considered old because gamer media caters to 15-25y olds. This, despite the fact that gamers in general skew older.

I've been doing this since I was 16 and I'm 28 now. The thing I've noticed (at least for me) is that you have to grow with your audience. I'm not so convinced that age is the problem, trying to chase a demographic is the problem, I think. Trying to stay relatable to a 12 year old when you're 38 is just not going to work, it's going to come across as fake (or even silly) because you're just at different points in your life. Some people seem to have made it work, but I've noticed that those people have very fickle audiences that don't stick around. It was scary at first, making a new channel and letting my old one die, but now I'm so happy I did. I get so many comments from people saying that they love my new content because it's growing up with them, and I love that. I don't think that 30+ content is going to disappear. Just that it's naturally quieter and (generally) involves less drama. As long as there are people in the real world older than 30 there will need to be channels for them too.
@PanickedPixel4 жыл бұрын
Oh hey, I started when I was 16 and left an old channel as well a few years back. Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m 26 now and I think I’ve been resisting ‘growing up’ in my content for a while, and it’s probably dragged me down. This really puts things into perspective!

You sound wise before your time. There is no age limit to consuming or creating content on the internet since the internet is the great publication equalizer and has given freedom of speech it’s finest hour. In my opinion, it is the most important invention since the debut of the printing press itself as it opens the channels of international communication to everyone regardless of social status, connections or money. You brought up some really amazing issues here. I'm 54 and just started my channel and talk about planning for retirement. However, I have been on the internet for two decades as well. Whatever your age, you need to adapt or perish. Evolve into platforms. KZbin and Facebook are big now. So was Myspace and Stumble Upon Ask Jeeves. Age is a privilege. Leave a mark on the world. Make mistakes. Fix them or don't fix them. Stand up for truth. I called out a scam on another one of my channels that has been going for 3 years and all of my ducks are in a row - and yet they still take thousands of dollars a year. Sometimes, you won't get justice. Saying the wrong thing is good for everyone. Both sides win by learning. The internet is the greatest tool for learning ever known to our culture and whether it's education in the traditional sense or understanding how horrible people can be on the internet, it's all learning. Be grateful that you have this tool to worry about - and then don't worry about it. In 100 years none of this is going to matter.

I have been following you for awhile and I am impress how such a young lady as your self is so wise. Part of growing and maturing is making mistakes and learning from our mistakes. In life we are constantly evolving and there are stages in our lives that we believe then we now wish we could have changed. But, you can’t go back and try to rewrite your history but, you can keep working on your future because you now have passed experiences. Every birthday is to be celebrated and not think that you are too old. Don’t listen or believe that myth that once you start reaching a certain age you are not relatable to others. That is not true and your financial advice is a gem for all. I am now 69 I relocated from Brooklyn to Maryland at 64 learn and brought a car at 66. I am also learning English literature from Shakespeare to Political culture. My point you are never too old to learn or teach. I watch and find your vlogs great advice on how to manage ones finance. Maybe one day you can tap on senior living; financial advice from health insurance to finance Keep being you 🙂

A lot of us that have been on YT a long time (since it used to be about how you 'Broadcast Yourself') are aging (better than not) and what we should see it as is not a negative but a good thing. This means that we are also a growing demographic that can be on YT and be a resource, sharing our lives, creating and making videos about what we want. Women have been told we are too old in the mainstream and no doubt people hear it on here as well but at the end of the day, viewers and creators get to decide what they want to make and watch. It's up to us to push against what we've been told we are supposed to do as we age and use a platform like this to do what we want. I don't think I'm the only person who has searched for videos by women over forty. This will likely happen more often as the platform continues.

Power to you and I agree you're ahead of the curve. It takes strength and insight to look at something and realize that you have to pave the way because no one else has. I'm 33 myself and have been on almost every social media platform since it's inception (incl. Uni-only FB). My mother always taught me never to put anything in writing you didn't want others to see and I treated social media like that from the outset. I agree we all make stupid decisions anyway even when we know better. But the real power and maturity is in stepping back and engaging. I'm teaching an introduction to academic writing course this semester as part of my PhD funding and their current unit deals with fact checking and fake news. I'm actively teaching the lessons you spoke here to these first and second year (freshman/sophomore for you USies) students because I think it'll be even more important by the time they're our age. To me the internet is a strange, remote toy which let's me see stuff on KZbin that is vastly better and more engaging than anything on legacy (banal, insulting, propagandistic, ideology-drenched) TV. To them, my kids, the internet is a real thing. Like life, only extremely high tech. Your comments in this video bring this home. Its hard to watch, because it really seems so homemade and frivolous. Thank you for this great video. It’s your honest and oh-so-very helpful talks like this one that made me subscribe to TFD, years ago. Many, many thanks for this!
This is a great topic Chelsea, and one I can totally relate to. I think as the internet evolves, more and more communities, niches and topics will find a place on social media and on KZbin. Just as there are TV shows for every type of audience, there can be KZbin channels for every type of audience. And great point about not getting caught up in drama and being careful what you share online. I think the first thing anyone should check with themselves before posting anything online, be it a Facebook/Insta post, a blog post, or KZbin video, should be "would I be comfortable if my employer/future employer/ parents/random social group that would get offended, saw this piece of content?" Now fun fact, I have kinda fallen into the other extreme: more than a year ago I started my channel with a video that gained quite a lot of traction. But there have been some life changes that made the idea of the channel inapplicable. I've been wanting to resume my channel and make it about something else, but I feel stuck because my subscribers/commenters keep asking for updates so I do have to make an update video before I get to the topics I really want to talk about now. I could just ignore them, delete the video, and start fresh, but I don't want to do that either, it would feel so wrong to the hundreds of people who commented. The channel also bears my own name which used to be my brand name in my former business, and I have a not negligible presence with it on social media. So it's not like I can just invent another persona to walk around online as. I did open another channel with my husband but I really want to pick up my old channel too. If only I can get the courage to film that update video. So yeah, moral of the story, we might indeed get old, and it may seem that things we did or said online in the past don't matter, but they do. Just like in the "real" world.

My son is 19 and we had a really good conversation the other day when he expressed concern about the number of Daily Mail articles popping up on his news feed because his friends are sharing them. He tries to stick to a policy of pausing and doing at least a small amount of research before sharing anything online and he encourages his friends to do the same and to think logically and show some sense if something shocking doesn’t really sound right instead of jumping on all the click bait and sharing it around. He made the point that “trial by media” is a modern version of mob mentality which causes normally intelligent people to act in ways that they would probably be ashamed of in the cold light of day. I have hope that, given time, the way people interact with all forms of online media will mature as more leaders and role models like yourself, and like my son, emerge and influence others.

First of all, happy belated birthday. Second, I think Chelsea, you're serving as a phenomenal example for aging on the internet (not that you're old, heck I'm only a couple years younger than you but internet). Since you are hyper-aware of yourself, your conduct, and are willing to discuss it and own up to your mistakes when they occur, I don't think you're going to worry about aging gracefully on the internet. You're already doing it. Keep being you and creating the incredible content that you and your team/network/collaborators have been because it's been amazing. And when it's no longer serving you, then you'll deal with that bridge as it approaches. We'll be here to support you regardless. All my love and support

Chelsea, you are amazing. I love TFD so much because you are smart and not self-indulgent and actually provide viewers with valuable information. There are not many channels like that. And as someone who is about to turn 30, I appreciate what you're doing with your business and how you enrich the lives of people of all ages. It is something to aspire to if you're going to be working on the internet.

Thank you so much Chelsea. This is everything that I have been thinking that stops me from starting my own channel. And I don’t think that’s a bad thing. You haven’t crushed my dreams- you’ve crystallized my hesitations. And now I’m going to fully give myself permission to not start a channel. I like writing better. It’s more controlled and honestly, in 10 years I want to be taken seriously as an expert in my field (medical profession) and the internet with all of its trolls and glory is a really quick way for me to damage my reputation. I think you’re incredibly brave and talented. You’ve managed to get your message across and survive the uncontrollable hellscape that is the “comments section”.

Chelsea!! Preach! We're all growing up together and your content is so relevant to my 34 year old life. I hope you continue for years to come and really appreciate that you're building a brand that doesn't just hinge on you and your beliefs. That's responsible of you, financially and socially. Thanks for reminding us all that when you're young you say and do dumb shit but coming for a teenager when you're in your 30s is a bad look. Very appreciated rant!

Thank you for this, it's refreshing. I'm comfortably into my thirties and sometimes I worry about how some around me who seem to be stuck trying to emulate young youtube/twitter/tumblr and just refuse to accept they're the adults now, they can do more now if they want. I've seriously seen 30-somethings argue that all the people they follow on twitter think X person is horrible and so no one should like them or their art or whatever work they do - often for ambiguous reasons that would never directly affect them, but uses all the right jargon. Not even my teenagers would try that on me. It like the old trope of dudes still trying to wear their high school varsity jacket or college stuff years-decades later, but now rather than it just awkward to family, it's awkward and possibly damaging to a wide audience.

The ending of this made me so happy. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! After you and Ingrid talked about this on the podcast, I’ve been trying to think about what my future looks like with KZbin as an almost 30 year old.

The reason I love your new series of interviews is that it allows you expose your audience to new people with noteworthy things to say. You can do a “ten money mistakes” video with your eyes shut, but this new format allows you to broaden your skills as an interviewer and broaden the audiences world view. Being in the oldest demographic who watches, I am very grateful you see the mud slinging and drama as something unbecoming yourself and the other seasoned KZbinr. There are others who could take a lesson.

I loved your message re etiquette online. I’m 52 yrs old and subscribe to your channel bc I was raised with horrible financial example/advice. And in the busyness of raising 4 humans I found my own slightly better way. But I find your content, approaches finances from a practical (not fear based) way, which I find informative, enjoyable and applicable. My youngest daughter(22yrs) also follows and loves nothing more than her compound interest calculator. So my point is age doesn’t figure when we are talking about information, at least I hope it doesn’t. And also, I hope most people realize, that “stars” of internet/KZbin, are flashes. You are making beneficial content in a professional way! Congrats, and enjoy it and thank you.

I love the fact that I'm old enough to not be able to look back at 16 year old me on KZbin and thank, "what is wrong with that guy?" You are very correct that there is no template for aging on this platform, and it will be interesting to see where all of this goes one day. Great video here!

Thank you for this! Aside from being a really great example of how to own your past and mistakes and grow from them, it was an interesting perspective on how and when to call out behaviour publicly. Because public call outs are the ones we see in the media, it can be hard to remember that behaviour can be called out privately and that that can be a more effective response. Thanks for being a giving creator and sharing the mic but giving us the real talk straight from you too.

There are so many amazing KZbinrs in their 30s or older and they're not "ancient" or "irrelevant". Michelle Phan, Valeria Lipovetsky, Jon Olsson, Casey Neistat, Lydia Elise Millen, Taylor R... those are some of the biggest names on KZbin! age really is just a number on the internet. If the content is interesting, nobody cares.

I'm almost 44, and I've been wanting to launch a youtube channel for quite awhile. I honestly feel like the time is ripe - I feel like we're an underrepresented group on KZbin. I subscribe to a lot of channels led by men who are late 30's and well beyond (Casey Neistat, Rich Roll, Fully Charged Show to name a few), but no "older" women. And maybe it's because I'm of a different generation, but the question of whether and how to get involved in all of the drama really isn't even a question to me. STAY IN YOUR LANE, is the answer. Staying focused on the purpose of your channel and providing value/education/entertainment to your subscribers is the mission. I know all the drama gets views, but if it's not authentically you or what your channel is about, it's never a good idea to put your foot in it at any age. Anyway, just found your channel. Thanks for this video - a good kick in the ass to get going on my ideas ;-)

I'm 37,and although I'm not in KZbin, remember everything will pass, you can't say the platform will still be interesting to kids in 10 years. But I've found that I now have experience to say some things to people younger than me and I like that, I think I can be good at it, so do you. Keep producing quality content and don't worry about the younger ones...

As a soon to be 32 year old I am so happy to still be able to watch videos from "older creators" and to have a peer in you. When I joined the Nerdfighters (9 years ago now) in Germany, I got really luck, because to have that level of English to understand their fast talk you have to be a little further with your foreign language education, so German nerdfighters were no screaming teenagers but at least in their early 20s. And I keep looking to John and Hank as we grow older together creator + audience. But I went to VidCon Europe the last 3 years and there you are easily overwhelmed with the young crowds especially on the Community floor, so I usually would go in with a creator ticket, even as my channel has been inactive for the last several years. ^^

Im 21 and normally would rather watch youtubers who are my age or older because they're more relatable. Its refreshing to see someone who knows themself and has actually lived life because its more relatable. Younger teens may be the ones who go to vidcon and are seen as the main consumers of popular youtubers, but older people do watch youtube and want relatable content as well and when u grow older so does your audience and all of those teens who will be adults like i am now and want budgeting help! Your channel is great and i love it! ❤❤

This video resonates with me, although I'm not a youtuber. I feel that we all should strive to make the Internet as a whole a more adult space, where there is room for nuance, for understanding each other, for allowing people to make mistakes and grow without being stained forever by them, for not splitting into factions over each issue. There is a lot of rage on the Internet, so many people who take "power" from dismissing other people and using irony as a weapon to brandish against those who are earnest and emotional in enjoying what they like. The better places on the Internet are the ones that welcome newcomers instead of gatekeeping them out, that allow conversations, that make me feel like I don't have to fit a narrow idea in order to be a "legitimate" participant. When I was younger I never posted comments, because I was so used to assuming that no one gives a f--k about my opinion. It's probably still the case, but at least I found places where this fact is not thrown onto me in a hostile way.

I'll be 50 this year and I LOVE KZbin. I don't know the statistics, but I do know that many many many people my age watch all sorts of videos on here. My interests range from fashion to cooking to intelligent content relating to women aging and keeping our youthfulness. I can pass for a 30 year old all day long. Although I was blessed with good skin, much of this has to do with how I dress and my attitude. Age means nothing. And if someone tells you otherwise they are sadly mistaken and need to get a life.

@markbernier84344 жыл бұрын
I chuckle at you worrying about aging. You address a serious subject and aim your very good content at those most ignorant of it. It is very very much needed. From my perspective you are just barely old enough to take seriously. If you want to see what aging well on the internet looks like look for serious topics, hard science, construction, economics (macro or micro) and you will see the mentors you mention from people who's career predates the internet (never mind just KZbin) but are still taking the time and have the talent to create content and to teach others.

I really enjoyed this. I am older (45 this week!) ..and sometimes I feel like it's difficult to find content on You Tube that I enjoy and that I can relate to. But I also feel like there is a place for everyone on here...of all ages and interests. I watch several people who are much younger than I am and that I have connected with and have conversations with frequently and it's fantastic. I think that we can learn a lot on here but we also need to remember that we don't have to watch content that is drama driven or that makes us feel badly about ourselves.

Some good rules i've learned from people on tumblr when someone's doing a cancelling on some schmuck on the internet: 1) don't reblog/retweet/spread/comment on the post. leave it be, even if it makes your blood boil or your heart start singing praises. assume nothing in favour of either side in the conflict. 2) research the person being accused. i mean, just go into their profile and check if there's any age given in the profile or maybe something else that will give you a clue to what kind of person they are. take a quick look through their posts. was this bad post they did just done at the end of a long frustrating day? and they didn't think things through? or is this as the accuser say, and that they are actually continually promoting something bad or doing something very bad. TLDR: was this one post, or is it several? 3)research the accuser. if there's someone with an account, check how long ago they started the account. when did they start posting? is there any other post on their blog beside the accusation? if there's no other post, be very suspicious. why didn't they want to post this under their usual account? (same goes for any anon doing it) or if there are lots of post on the blog, but only posts inciting drama or just going after one topic, then it's a troll feeding on the attention. in the second best case, a bot. there's plenty of liars on the internet, don't fall prey to them. 4) conclusion: what have you learned about these two accounts? by going through the previous steps you might get close or at least near what happened. it will probably be a) the accusation is true b) the accusation is false c) the accusation is partly true, or there are factors in what happened that the accuser isn't mentioning, and is making the accused seem more guilty than they actually are. such as, the accused is young and don't know have knowledge or experience, had a really bad day, is talking about something different than the accuser lets us know, or it's a very small discretion blown up out of proportion, or it's personal drama between two people which is none of your business. 5)if all of the steps 2-4 seems like a lot of work to you, then just stay at step 1. your involvement in any internet cancelling or drama will only make it worse, not better. drama and cancellations get big on the internet due to the very nature of our biggest social media platforms, who've created algorithms made to encourage this behaviour in people. because drama makes us do reckless things, and platforms likes it when there's drama. traffic to their sites increases, money increases from ad revenue, and we're all wasting time bickering with shmucks on the internet. because truth be told, at the least only about few thousand people will know about the drama. at best maybe a hundred thousand. that's about a 1/3 of the population of iceland. (if they still are at around 300 000 inhabitants). it'll only be more if it's someone as big as pewdiepie or markiplier (they're biggest ones right? i know so much about youtube celebrities) save your energy for better things. over the course of the last year i more and more have stopped giving a toss about drama on the internet. i've deleted the facebook, twitter and tumblr apps from my mobile, and only use social media on my computer. i've become more active doing voluntary work and political activism, which is honestly more rewarding to me.
