I'm on the search for a boat, but it’s not for crabbing. It’s for selling crabs! I’m looking at 3 different boats and going to turn one of them into a crab stand. I need to find one that’s in decent enough condition that I don’t have to do a ton of work on it. Even though it’s not going to be on the water, I still need it have a solid floor, roof, and cabin. Hopefully we can make a deal!

You should build a 12 foot section of pier, like a deck for your customers to walk on to come up to the boat to get their crabs. That would be cool!

Outstanding Luke! Be sure to contact your City Building Dept. and make sure that this is all doable, and whether there will be any issues that they spring on you, like all of a sudden because you're developing a City lot, they want sidewalks put in, restrooms that are handicap capable, paved parking and curbs with controlled drainage...and on and on and on. One minute you're thinking, "I just wanna park a cool vintage boat and a refrigerator and keep selling crabs" and the next minute it's a $300k project that needs umpteen permits, inspections, the hiring of engineering firms, and on and on.

This is great advice and something I was going to suggest but I've seen the state take down finished and ongoing projects for the absurdist reasons. Once personally had to remove a custom hand shaped sign with vynl laminate and red led rope inlayed around the perimeter and the light reflected backwards off the building and couldn't even be seen directly, yet the city claimed it was to much of a distraction to drivers... Regardless of the 50 other signs along the street, casting direct light outward and toward drivers.

Looking to build up your business. I lobstered in Maine for 20 years. I like your idea and style,I think you will do very well with this project and adventure. Good luck I don’t think you will regret this decision. Have fun with it.

There used to be a Deadrise on the south side of 301, advertising one of the Crab Houses back in the Day. it was suspended by telephone poles. I wanna say it was south of Waldorf. It deteriorated over the years and collapsed. I must have rode past that Ole boat a thousand times on My Motorcycle... IT...was a statement. Your Crab Boat will be the same hysterical LANDMARK...that No One Will FORGET. Great advertising forever.

Luke, anchor your boat to the ground and add footers so it’s a fixed structure. Then have BGE run power to it so you can plug your reefer box in to the boat instead of running a generator and all the expense of gas. With electricity you can run a wireless camera system to monitor your property. You could also keep a refrigerated box in the cabin to store premade orders. Having full time electricity you could also install a WiFi thermostat to monitor the temperature of the refrigerator to avoid losing crabs because the power went out. Just a couple suggestions.

No updated view with the crab shack yet though. There is a bunch of reviews for the seafood, and not surprisingly, every single one is a 5 star rating. keep it up Luke, history in the making.

As a business owner myself, I know customer experience is something that can get ignored in a business especially when things are hard. I think this is an amazing idea and should attract a lot of customers who have no idea who you are or what you do. Make it STAND OUT though so people don’t just think it’s a boat on the side of the road.

Build a trailer from your stuff “laying around”, throw that boat on it, remove the engine and running gears, install a refrigeration compressor down where engine was, demo and replace old floor, find an old walkin box refrigerator and mount that on the new floor, you can even use the cabin if you insulate the sides of the boat with close 2-3” thick foam foil sheets. You can get a 100 amp electrical service set at the property from electric company if that could be considered as a “Temporary Structure” like a modular house. All this would depend on what the property is zoned as. You might have access to a marine piling to use as meter, panel mounting and power company will run power from street to power pole. That can be classified at “Direct BOAT to CUSTOMER SALE”. Fun project but you better get going to make it happen this year.

There is nothing like the ride of a Chesapeake Deadrise. If it's too rough for a Deadrise to go in. you don't need to go. We were coming up the bay in a Navigator getting our ass handed to us. A smaller heavily laden deadrise managed to catch with us and tuck in to run with us. I have spent many an hour under way on a deadrise. But that just blew me away to see just what they can do in rough seas. They are tough stable workhorses and take one hell of a beating for many years and keep going.

Luke, as a boy growing up in Gloucester Point Va, brings back so many memories. My Dad was a Marine Biologist working for VIMS in Gloucester. Lived there from 1948-1963. I can remember going on one the research boats that looked very similar to your dead rise boat, she was called the Virginia Lee. Growing up there on the York river was amazing too, and I really miss the fresh seafood. Sort of land locked now live in Ohio outside of Cincinnati. Take care and wish you safe cruises!

Absolutely: I dig it when historical preservation dovetails with an interesting diversion and/or service! I.E: Almost everyone has seen an ubiquitous old Pullman train car that has been turned into a hot dog/ burger/espresso stand; good food from a tourist trap with integrated gift shop infrastructure, etc. My fav was an old red/white/black steam powered tugboat (with the tall black exaust stacks and all), which had been moored and transitioned to selling (killer) fish and chips and steam beer in San Francisco Bay... And, I remember an archetypical old red caboose parked next to US Route 2 west of Stevens Pass, WA, by a speck of a rest-stop/hamlet/burger joint named 'Zeeks'... Best, burgers, Ever. (in the shining memory of my youth, anyway.)
