@@brianmichael9397 I'm not playing this game. If these people truly believed a word they said about saving the fetuses, they would be rushing to adoption centers in droves. But they don't. The adoption centers are full of babies, younger kids, older kids, and teens. It's a very big crisis, and the anti-choice crowd is nowhere to be seen. Instead of harassing women, they could be helping solve the actual problem, but they don't. There are those who adopt, but usually babies from foreign countries who make for easy prey for this predatory religion.

I met a rich man on Facebook who claimed to be a Christian. I only talked to him a few times before I managed to piss him off enough that he blocked me but seeing the world through his eyes told me everything I needed to know about rich people. There’s a whole community of the very rich who believe it’s a sin to be poor and associating with poor people is sinful. He actually told me he thought I was smart and “almost have the zeal of God” whatever that means but he kept insisting it’s wrong to help people. How many people are involved in running the country who consider themselves to be Christians?

@@YourAlexander You're right, judge him instead on the terrible godly sins outlayed within the bible itself (Psalm 137:9 "blessed shall he be who takes your little ones and dashes them against rocks!"), or that one time that several little kids were slaughtered by a bear simply because they made fun of a bald guy (2 Kings 2:23-24 New International Version (NIV) “Get out of here, baldy!” they said. “Get out of here, baldy!” He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys."). And that's not even counting all the groups of people that he's had genocided simply because they weren't his chosen flock. Also, just gonna debunk you on that last bit: not every atheist has even heard of that last verse. I mean hell, I went through church for 10+ years as a kid and haven't even remembered it, so that says something about how "widely used" that verse is.

I’m a moderate on abortion. I believe abortion should be legal and accessible but the demand for abortion should be decreased by policies that reduce abortion with availability of contraceptives and support for pregnant people and parents.

This is essentially where I’ve landed especially now that we’ve actually seen abortion bans and the problems that’s causing. I used to be much more prolife but after pondering and hearing all these incredibly sad accounts of many women in abortion restricted states I am much more pro choice with an emphasis on finding ways to reduce abortions through making them unnecessary in the first place. Better sex ed better access to contraceptives, better and cheaper childcare and medical systems better adoption and foster care reform etc there are so many things that are not abortion itself that could make abortion so rare in time that it will be a non issue. Advancements in medical science may even bring a day when abortions for medical reasons may not be necessary via gene editing and better fetal surgery techniques and maybe one day artificial wombs for those who have conditions that completely prevent or severely endanger viable pregnancy such as ectopic pregnancies or other pregnancy issues. The goal should not be removing peoples autonomy and safety and such but pursuing things that address the root causes of why abortion is even necessary to begin with.

When Roe vs. Wade was originally decided, the prominent evangelicals of that day actually lauded that decision. Those evangelicals then didn't see it as a travesty. They also dismissed the anti abortion stance as "a catholic issue." Also the anti abortion crusade has been called out as a "culture war younger than the Happy Meal."

Abortion was chosen as a political hot button issue to replace integration and keeping minorities "in their place." It is all about political power and controlling women -- when it is the man who made them pregnant. "Christian" political leaders care nothing about the child after it is born (only that it will become a voting "Christian") or helping the poor. They are hypocrites of convenience and expediency.

Even "anti-abortion" isn't strong enough IMO, I prefer "pro-forced-birth", because it not only removes the obfuscation that "pro-life" creates, it also cuts to the issue of bodily autonomy rather than litigating beliefs and opinions.

Related: it’s surprising how many “pro-lifers” support the death penalty. Also, any hint of post-birth support for children is a huge no-no. As soon as that baby has popped out of the passage, they better be able to get a job and support themselves!

@@ianalan4367 first, I think the question is a distraction and an obvious attempt to steer the conversation away from what it's actually about and back to your religious and/or philosophical litigating. I think the decision should be between the pregnant person and their medical care provider, and whatever "restrictions" should be informed by medical facts and the reality in which we live, not dogma, and not a bunch of bluster from people who will never face these decisions themselves. Someone who can never be pregnant doesn't ever ever ever get to tell a pregnant person that they must allow their body to be used as an incubator. You want so desperately to get away from that basic concept, and I'm not playing your game.

@@arioutlaw Yes, that's true. And it is not a good idea. Of course, the messianic prophecies are essential, for example in Isaiah or Daniel. The story telling is also on a higher level in the Old Testament, for example Samson and Delilah. Or Tamar, Absalom and Amnon with a story of lethal revenge among close relatives. Compare this to Jesus healing various people with magic (yawn).

What gets me the most: Is that they *completely ignore* all the orphans. Like they say: "Being forced birth, doesn't mean you're pro-aftercare!". Like, if they *actually* cared: They would be out walking the streets, and each adopting 12 kids each. But: They're not. They don't give a flying truck about kids. To me: It's VERY simple: *Until* there's literally 0 kids in foster care: Ablortion is the ONLY good, moral choice. The fact they happily let kids dye by the hundreds each day without batting an eye, makes it *very* clear what their *actual* motives are.

Good to see you back on KZbin Kristi. Another verse is Hosea 13: 16 which says, “The people of Samaria must bear their guilt, because they have rebelled against their God. They will fall by the sword; their little ones will be dashed to the ground, their pregnant women ripped open.” It seems a lot of Protestants became anti-abortion when they lost the battle for segregation. Needed a new issue to rally behind.

In one sense, you are not wrong about abortion taking the place of Segregation, though it's not a very straight line between the two. In the early 1970s, around the same time as Roe (which was actually welcomed by the SBC and other "Evangelical" communities), many of the Right wing Protestant Churches were seeking to defend the Segregation Academies which were set up after Brown officially declared Public School segregation against the US Constitution. By the early 1970s, the Federal Government was beginning to pay attention to these, usually Church Run, Segregation Academies and began threatening to Tax them. Senior Evangelical leaders came together to fight this. They knew that they would never get public support for overt segregation. So Jerry Falwell founded the "Moral Majority" with the EXPLICIT aim of Protecting Segregation Academies but hidden behind a patina of "Family Values" and "Pro-Life" cant... FWIW, they succeeded in protecting the Segregation Academies which continue to operate Seventy years after Brown...

That's exactly when it happened. Evangelicals were pro-choice when Roe v Wade passed. Then Jimmy Carter came into office and started to actually enforce tax law meaning that colleges that practiced segregation, like Bob Jones and Liberty, would no longer receive tax breaks. They did NOT want to give up their racism. Read Randall Balmer's book "Bad Faith: Race and the Rise of the Religious Right." He gives an insider, architech's history of the movement.

"Their princes were destroyed because of the rage of their tongues. This shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.." That is, the princes of Israel spoke and plotted rebellion against their Assyrian rulers, the Assyrians found out, and brutally slaughtered and dispersed all the northern ten tribes. A thing which, according to Hosea 11, God was weeping to see it happen.

I use the Noah's flood argument with my familiy to show them God's cruelity toward children, and they say things like " Well how to you know they were children during the flood? " Its like they know its wrong killing children or newborn, but they refuse to see it and they try to invent many scenario where children are spare from the flood. It is ridiculous how much they want this God to be true.

Thank you so much! Growing up as a fundamentalist Christian, I held sola scriptura in one hand and "God is love" in the other. As I learned, studied, and memorized chapter after chapter, book after book- it became abundantly clear how full the Bible is of unapologetically violent God-ordered acts. Calling God love does not excuse those acts, but rather makes them even more disturbing.

Popping in the comments to see the mental gymnastics Christians use to explain this away. My deconstruction was about a five year process. This was a topic brought up just before I learned that it was humans who voted on the books that we base our authority on, which was the final straw for me. But in the classes about this topic, they only mentioned, "Well non believers love to use this verse, but look at this verse about love." The closest they came was, "Well the original Greek and Hebrew translates it differently." But never explain.

I've been waiting to hear someone talk about Numbers 5:11-31. I am glad you addressed it on your channel. So... here's the thing. That dust that goes into that concoction was to be gathered from the tabernacle floor. Within the tabernacle, one would find the alter upon which animals were sacrificed. Think about that for a moment. Animals were brought in to this area, which was likely a tent erected above the bare ground. These animals would not cease to urinate and defecate simply because they were under a tent. Furthermore, the loss of muscle tone upon death most often involves a release of the urine and feces contained in the animal. So, one would expect blood, feces, urine, and whatever else might come out of a dying animal on the sacrificial alter to flow down off the alter into the dust on the floor of the tabernacle. There it would be trampled in by the comings and goings of the worshippers feet, not to mention what they may bring in from outside the tabernacle on their shoes. I would imagine that the "curse" would likely do its job regardless of whether or not the woman was guilty of unfaithfulness. This is just horrendous, to think that someone figured out that ingesting such a nasty mixture would cause someone severe illness, and they took advantage of that fact in order to find a way for a man to get rid of a wife that he didn't want. It is just deplorable.

By the why in the Mishnah the Jews believe "In such circumstance (where allowing the pregnancy to continue would kill the mother) Judaism insists that the foetus must be aborted, since the mother's life is more important than that of the foetus." Also, in the Ohalot 7:6 "If a woman has (life-threatening) difficulty in childbirth, one dismembers the embryo within her, limb by limb, because her life takes precedence over its life. However, once its head (or its 'greater part') has emerged, it may not be touched, for we do not set aside one life for another. " . Pretty strong words!!! Only once the head appears do they consider it a life, so maybe do not be a breech birth. This might also explain why killing a pregnant women was thought of as no worse than killing non-pregnant women..

Interesting how most fundamentalists, even if they believe in eternal hellfire for all unbelievers, will still make an exception for babies and small children because they are under the age of accountability. So if aborted babies automatically get a free pass to heaven, then aren't they the luckiest people on earth? I've never gotten a clear answer from them on that.

What makes the anti-abortion stance so powerful is that it allows one to claim the moral high ground while covering up their immoralities. They can say "abortion is murder, and I don't support murder, so I'm better than you." While simultaneously, most anti-abortion absolutists oppose the social safety net, and support the death penalty, unrestricted gun ownership, and states with the most strict abortion laws tend to have higher violent crime rates, higher infant and maternal mortality rates, and lower life expectancies. The "abortion is murder" argument also allows for Christians to conceal the real origin of this movement: patriarchy. When they knew they could no longer say that they believed a woman's place should be in the home, they started saying that women shouldn't be allowed to kill their children. Also, if you aren't aware of the history of the anti-abortion movement, I would recommend Randall Balmer's book "Bad Faith: Race and the Rise of the Religious Right". This book chronicles how the religious right actually got started in response to legal challenges to racial segregation in private schools, and later pivoted to abortion as a wedge issue when the former was no longer palatable. I'd also recommend watching some of the lectures of Frank Schaeffer, who produced a series of anti-abortion films in the late 1970s that played a major role in turning white evangelical Christians against abortion. I'm pretty sure my parents saw these films, and it's likely that some of your relatives saw them too, considering your upbringing. Prior to this time, it was largely the Catholic church that was against abortion, and many conservative Protestants actually supported the legalization of abortion in some circumstances or were ambivalent about the issue.

Christians know just enough about their bible to know they are supposed to be about love. The problem is, they hate nearly everyone - so they are in desperate need of someone they can love without having to actually love actual people. So they focus their love on the unborn - who can be abstracted - don't yet have a race they hate, or an origin they hate, or a belief they hate, or a political position they hate, or a sexual orientation they hate, or a gender identity they hate, or an immigration status they hate, or a religion they hate...they are thus the perfect objects for christians to display their "love." Of course, the moment they're born, all bets are off...they start to fall into those categories, and the hate begins.

@@jimestrem6010 Say what you want about the morals of it all, but at bare minimum abortion should be allowed for the sake of medical emergencies. I know it's terrible to lose lives, but if you actually manage to, y'know, save the mother (or at least help her retain the ability to have kids, as such emergencies can permanently damage that), then you'd even out the ratio of lives lost vs lives saved, and oftentimes it ends up being a net positive if the mother turns around and has more kids later on. I dunno about you, but as terrible as it'd be to have to lose a possible kid, it's FAR more terrible to be forced to lose the mother as well.

As somebody opposed to abortion outside of like rape, incest, etc. I want them to be safe, rare, and legal. I don't care about a performative act saying "we don't accept that, it's now illegal." I care about reducing the actual number of them, unlike the pro forced birth people. And that's my point of commenting is that I like to use the term "pro forced birth." Its sharp, it's accurate, and doesn't ask any questions about why it's called pro life, when as soon as that baby pops out, they want no help for the mom, no subsidies, no tax credits, no nothing. That's my point. Sorry, had to retype the whole comment so I had to shorten it. Safe, rare, and legal. I hate the saying, but vote blue no matter who. Let's not send Harris to the white house alone. The quote about the pregnant woman having a miscarriage is the most compelling argument that the Bible doesn’t regard unborn children as people. The bitter waters passage actually makes it pretty clear that it’s actually cool with abortion. Women have been doing abortion type procedures since they were discovered. It’s only been in the 20th century that it became a religious issue and likely just a tactic to divide the female vote. Cool video.

@@cezz1105 except for all the instances where murder is shown to be okay. For example, you have the deaths of children commanded by God, and yet Jesus clearly indicated that children were innocent and couldn't be guilty of sin because they don't even know what sin is. So, Canaanite children... massacred, at God's command. And why? Because God was worried that his chosen people would be corrupted by the Canaanite ways. So He couldn't even trust his own people to not be tempted by Canaan's practices, so to prevent temptation, he had all the Canaanites, yes including the children, killed. Innocent children were killed, at God's command. So, no, I'm afraid it is not particularly clear on that. And then there's the Flood. This unchanging God became regretful that he'd made humans (even though He made them this way, and even though He clearly knew how they'd turn out). So he drowned them all in a massive global flood, men, women, children, pregnant women... I mean, I guess you can claim that God brought them into this world and he can take them out at his will, but I find it incredibly difficult to not see such a depiction of God as evil, not to mention changing his mind (which a perfect God would never need to do). A belief in the OT as god-breathed becomes tenable only when you stick your fingers in your ears and refuse to listen to what it actually says. Or maybe your pastor kept these verses from you, and you sorta glossed over it when you read it yourself. Or just passed over it thinking you must be missing some meaning. Or you never read the whole thing, and just depended on other people to tell you what to believe. People brought me to religion. The bible got me out.

If you rewatch her video, you can see that the punishment for an altercation ending in a miscarriage is not treated as a loss of life, but of property. So, she's saying that in at least that verse, unborn children were not seen as alive (they hadn't drawn their first breath). Take your fingers out of your ears much?

I really like the quote by pastor David Barnhart who said that unborn children are the most convenient people to protect because you can claim to love Jesus or be righteous , but you don’t actually have to lift a finger, spend money, or do any actual work to feel that way. You don’t have to help the sick, the poor, or hungry and still feel good about yourself when defending the unborn.

Abortion should not, and is not, a religious issues. Not when laws are concerned as we are not a theocracy. For many it may based on religion for personal reasons but there are many secular people who are pro-life as well. Abortion is a question of civil rights. The mother has her right to life, bodily autonomy, and so forth. The question is whether an unborn should have the same right to life as its mother. The question is under what circumstances, according the ethical laws we all live by, should have a mother be allowed to kill her own living offspring developing in her womb. I consider myself a religious man but that is not the sole reason pro-life. My personal religious beliefs have no bearing upon others.

Kristi, when I called myself Christian and went along with the saved thing, my body and mind was always stressed and thought by praying I could get God to answer my prayers, but still, a lot of people passed away, disease continued on people I loved, wars continued, and people didn't change. @@WildandFree4 Bart Ehrman is a very popular scholar, but surely not the top NT scholar. He is also not the first theologian to try to understand Jesus from a merely secular perspective. This school of thought is over 150 years old. One prominent representative was David Friedrich Strauss, for example.

Kristi, your elaboration is highly interesting and very important, specially after SCOTUS removed Roe v Wade. As a male, I hearthfully think that women are very capable deciding over their own body. As well as that their doctors are profesionals and capable to judge the situation medically. No intervention needed here. Cheers.
