It's different, guys. I don't think in New York everyone says hello to every pedestrian on the street; same in Moscow. But I definitely say "Hello! How do you do?" to people living in the same section of the condominium I live. And in the country where I have my dacha (summer house) north of Moscow, neighbors certainly greet each other along the entire street because we know each other.

I found my Russian soul during that time. Unfortunately I can’t go back due to my spinal cord injury in 2013 but it will always be in my heart. Its such a trip watching the trend of people moving. Not just you guys for instance but Australians, Canadians, and others who have chosen to relocate. I myself moved to Russia in 2009 through 2010- I went because of the layoffs and I decided to try my hand at teaching english. I visited Moscow but chiefly spent time in Siberia in the city of Kemerovo where I lived and worked. I came back in 2010 - I have family in Belarus now and I have some ability to understand speak read and write in Russian though it was lost in our family a long ass time ago and so I am digging it back out for myself, or I've been trying for the last 20 years. I dont use it day to day (unless I go out of my way to make myself) but hearing it and using it feels comfortable ... like comfort food for the soul. I have been considering doing the same thing you guys have been doing, and moving. I am not alone - I think probably only a tiny minority of people who decide to do so actually make it public for so many reasons. I know personally of multiple americans who either just moved there or they work from home for american companies but live in russia ( enjoying the nice salary). I hope more people get to see and understand the kind of place Russia is and what it means for people- or what it COULD mean for them, and understand that it IS 100% "Nightmare difficulty" from the process to the language to the climate.. (you gentleman if you have a grip on spanish wont struggle as much with pronunciation as most americans- ) but its a case of you get BACK what you put in- and its worth while.

True, in Vladivostok I was freezing to my bones in January 1997, when it was minus 14 of frost because of terrible winds, whereas in Irkutsk on Lake Baikal I felt fine at minus 30 of frost. It felt like minus 8 in Moscow.

I visited Lake Baikal in winter, when it was -30 Celcius and the number one nature wonder there was the river Angara, a mighty Sibeerian river, flowing out of Lake Baikal. What is amazing is that the current is so strong there that water never freezes in that very place even at minus 30 degrees Celsius. So you see pristine blue ice on one hand and bubbling flowing water on your other hand. This place is not far from the city of Irkutsk.

The USSR collapsed because of a weak political system and treason. There was no system of checks and balances, the General Secretary always had the deciding vote in every decision. And when a traitor and a corrupt person took this position, the whole system immediately collapsed like a house of cards.

No, Russia is not a new young country. Putin was educated in 1970th. Others who were all those years working with him, also mostly not so young. Some dramatic changes happened but still it is the same country, and people are the same. Putin is accomplishing a lot of things what SR party (SR won elections to Constitutional Assembly in 1917) planned to do. Russian communist party which is led by Zyuganov from early 1990th is preaching the same pro-Leninist nonsense. Pro-western so called liberals are also not new. Actually in the late 1980th about half (or maybe more) of Russian population was pro-western.

The Russian Federation is indeed a young country. Russia is ancient. I think we can all agree this is what was meant by Dan.
@viaceslavmikhailovich98254 ай бұрын
@@MoscowPhotog I don't agree. Country is made up of territory + people. Territory is the same and people are the same. Russian Federation (RSFSR) was proclaimed by Bolsheviks in 1918, and recognized by some countries as an independent state in 1920. After the civil war 1917-1922 the state indeed was changed but the country and people remained the same. The change of political power doesn't mean the change of the country.

@@viaceslavmikhailovich9825 Môj názor je, že áno po zmene celospoločenského systému sa reálne mení aj spoločnosť, čo znamená, že vzniká nová verzia štátu. To isté sa stalo Slovensku a Česku. Existoval štát ČESKOSLOVENSKO, potom ČESKOSLOVENSKA SOCIALISTICKÁ REPUBLIKA a ČESKOSLOVENSKA FEDERATIVNA REPUBLIKA. Nakoniec sa spoločný štát rozdelili do dvoch samostatných územných, ekonomických, spoločenských a kultúrnych štátov. Vo všetkých týchto časových obdobiach a politických systémoch to bola iná verzia štátu a spoločnosti. ... ÁNO jeden národ spojený z dvoch kultúrne podobných no zároveň odlišných individuálnych národov. ... . ...

It’s not a dumb thing to say. It may be ignorant and a bit insensitive to your egos but from American’s perspective this is logical. What conversations like this do is it exposes both the viewer and the show participants to different points of view, which are both valid.

@MoscowPhotog The US doesn't legislate what you can or cannot do with your own body, while the Russian government has a weird obsession with what people choose to do with their own genitals. Plus, Russia is one of the least free for freedom of speech. It's incredibly close to China and inching closer to North Korea. Now, that's fine if you want to live in a society with a very narrow range of freedoms and your religeon matches it, but keep in mind that you are condemning your legacy to it if they think differently. You have to keep in mind that not everyone believes the same as you
@ehenningsen4 ай бұрын
The US is very free. It's why you left. You didn't like lgbt people, you didn't like that people believe different and thought different. You left because you want a place that enforces your beliefs on everyone else, limiting their voice and autonomy. Russia is perfect for you because they crush people who are different. Problem is, you condemn your legacy to a very narrow range of rights and freedoms
