One important thing I forgot to mention: in a few years' time when I have a bigger house and more space, I will buy another MT-10 to replace this one. Fear not. And I can only own one bike at a time unless I give up reviewing new bikes for the channel, which I'm not about to do...

I tried adv riding for a while and decided tis not for me as the bikes as just too much of a compromise. What most don't tell you is you spend 90% of the time on the road to get to some gravel roads. You either set the bike up to be comfortable on the road and crap off-road or great off-road crap on road. But, the bikes are so heavy to manhandle off-road so anything more than a groomed gravel road forget it. If you want the adv experience go with a setup lightweight small capacity and a ford transit van for the highway best if both world and keep the MT10.
@juliusjacob141610 күн бұрын
Exactly. If you really want to do some occasional off road riding, just get a dedicated dirtbike and buy a trailer or a cheap 2nd hand van to drive to good off road areas.

I had a '15 R1200GSA. Unbelievably capable off road. I took a few day courses and went on long adv day rides with that guy and usually 10-20 other big adv bikers twice a month for nearly 3 years. It was amazing and a blast. However, the weight of the bike makes it more exhausting, particularly picking it up off road when you slide out or try things you don't know how to do yet. Lol. Admittedly I'm 5-11 and 150lbs wet, but especially at high elevations it exhausted me. Most of the time one or more if the other riders would stop n help so no big deal. But as I got older I gave up the idea of doing anything much more than fire roads ever again on a big bike. The energy would be better silent riding longer or feeling better on the way home that night!

@ I don't "get" the whole "un-subbed if you change bike", thing... Chopsie mentioned this in his recent video also! Tim, I changed from a ZZR1400 with 190HP ish to a Tenere 700 a year ago and honestly I don’t miss the power of the ZZR. I love the Tenere, it’s comfortable, sitting upright not bent over, has plenty of power for the road, it’s the grunt of the engine I like and the fact I can just go down a shitty track if I want too. Great choice, the rally is too tall for me I think, can just manage the standard, but a great choice

I sold my MT10-SP like two years ago now, loved it, was the original 2018 model with loud as hell Akra exhaust and everything. Puts a smile on my face just thinking about it ... Anyway. I decided along with a mate of mine that we where going to try this off-road/dual-sport life a bit and we both got T7's, slapped some Micheline trackers on them and off we went. The T7 is great, lots of torque down low, barely had to shift down from 4th while doing gravel roads and such, going low speed you just twist the throttle and off you go - that torque really helps out. I liked it for a lot of the stuff, it was fairly cheap to buy and own and changing tyres was easy enough on my own. I did swap out the original rear shock spring because it is very very soft even for a 80kg fellow like myself, and that did make a lot of difference comfort wise.. Riding on the tarmac was painful, I'm 180cm and the buffeting zone was smacking me in the forehead non stop. Also trying to go +110km/h you really had to guard the throttle man it is not like coasting along on a big bike, like the one both you and i left behind for the T7. It did the job but coming from the MT10-SP it was a bit of a downgrade comfort wise on longer rides. Also it's quite tall and I did fall over a number of times while doing off-roady stuff and the bike is quite top heavy so once it goes it goes. And I'm not a professional so anyone saying "just gas yourself out of it" I was never that good, and I think you gotta be honest and say that if you don't have the confidence or skill then it will make you fall over if you take it on off-roady adventures. It wasn't a big deal though, just pick it up and go again. Worth mentioning though. All in all I liked the bike for what it did for me, which was open up like 1000% more road to go on since I would not go on loose gravely roads with my MT10-SP, now nothing is impossible. I ended up selling it though because even though it was a great introduction to dualsport I was missing the big bike feel. So I sold it in autumn and next spring I bought a BMW 1250 GSA which is much more to my liking. I live in Sweden and proper off-road in the spinach is actually illegal here anyway so most off my riding is on gravely roads anyway and for that the GSA does great. I love the comfort, I love the power, I love that even going through muddy parts or fire roads / forrest roads it does not disapoint. But had I been a bit taller and not feelt like the T7 was a bit of a chore to deal with on longer tarmac rides, I probably would have keept it, but since I could after a season of riding conclude what my riding was like and what I used the bike for, I feel I made the right decision swapping to something bigger again. I suggest getting some proper handguards like Acerbis or Barkbusters if there are not already some on your bike, because the original ones are just flimsy plastic. If I had keept those on I right well would have snapped my fingers off at one point or another. Other than that the rear shock was spongy for me, a cheap and easy do it yourself mod. Oh and enjoy riding dirt roads mate, it's like you just unlocked more riding in your life when you get a dual-sport. :D

I read the first comments, and I don't really need to watch the video (I will, though). I left my KTM 1290 SAS (same as yours) for an MT-09. It is ok, and lighter, and I'm quite happy not to have to worry with KTM's recent turn of event. But the KTM never let me down, it had something that the 09 hasn't (while it is good bike). And I miss the power. I almost bought an MT-10 and I wish I had.I know the T7 has some torque, but the difference between 'some' and 'so much' changes everything. I hope you'll be happy with your choice.

Nice one this MT is... :) On T7: I absolutely love the concept of this bike, I almost decided to buy it and then I took it for a test drive and... I dropped it while still at the dealer! This is how top heavy it is. And 2nd design flaw is the welded subframe with that hanger for exhaust. When you will drop the bike, hanger will bend and the exhaust will be scratching against the swingarm... If they would fix those two issues, I would definitely buy one too. Cheers!

Hi Tim, I had never had the chance to get out on any of the Japanese manufacturers bikes as they don’t seem to ever have many bikes on demo and the ones that do want you to bring them back in 20 minutes! Not enough time for even a first ride review! As for adventure bikes, I ride an R1250R and the only bike I think I would change it for would be a GS or GSA. I love the shaft drive and the boxer engine BUT there does seem to be some reliability issues with the BMW batteries even on the new bikes. My best mate Joe used to own a Yamaha tenere and he loved it. We travelled a couple of times to Amsterdam together and it was fine for that. Anyway, wish you all the best for the new bike and the festival. All the best…

But you'd be on an MT-10 and my 2022 T7 Rally would never keep up. So, this is an interesting development. I've had the T7 for 18 months now and love it. It is top heavy but the engine is a peach. You'll want to upgrade the springs fore and aft for your weight, barkbusters, knobby tyres and maybe bigger footpegs. Most important is training for you. I ride mine all over the TET and any country tracks I can find. Enjoy!

As someone who went from sport bike/ naked bike, and got into adventure bikes last year, I regret it entirely. Mt10 is gonna be my next bike, hopefully this year. Riding is supposed to be thrilling and fun, the adventure bike just isn't to me. It's so good at everything, it ends up being great at nothing. It's gone from being that toy that my soul craves, and makes me smile, to another mode of transportation. Going down aimless dirt roads got old pretty quick. And for what it actually do on my adventure bike, because I'm not a pro, and I'm not willing to trash the thing, my MT09 could confidently do just as much dirt road stuff.

That's sad ! 😢 Adventure touring I presume in the UK I think it's referred to as " green laning" isn't what most people would describe as a true off-road adventure trip From what I've observed many riders make the mistake in buying top heavy large capacity adventure tourers that immediately limits the type of terrain you can safely navigate ! All that power and weight inevitably ends in expensive and painful accidents when they bite the dust !!!
@larryhouse37768 күн бұрын
@Gmac237 yes, getting into off road riding now, knowing what I know, I wouldn't exceed 400cc for any kind of dirt riding. Something else that needs to be considered too is rescue and help. Crashing in a public setting while riding alone is one thing, but going down in a secluded area, you have to get yourself and your bike out. You probably can't be reached by anyone. Off road riding should be a group activity, which is another thing that holds back my experience, you stray down that random dirt road, especially in Canada, you may find yourself very alone and out of phone service very quick.
@Gmac2375 күн бұрын
I agree! Crashing is bad anywhere just more embarrassing in public view 😂 In remote areas of Australia be it alpine areas or in the deserts where mobile phone connections are not reliable authorities recommended carrying an EPIRB !

Nicely explained Tim. Whilst I'm sad you're "leaving" our "best bike in the world" camp, ;) , I see you've said you'll be back :) Regardless, it's good to try something new/expand your horizons, learn new skills, force yourself out of your comfort zone. You really DO need a house with a drive and a garage for sure!!! (THAT is one of the reasons I moved out of London, as there was no WAY I could have afforded one there!!). I would have suggested the Toerag 660, Andy (ManCam) LOVES his, but you're right about the Piaggio group lack of dealers, AND that problem is getting waaaay worse. My nearest WAS Colchester, but now they have gone there isn't a dealer I think within two hours of me!! :( :( I Love the CP2 engine (especially the newer/updated version), and friends that have the T7 LOVE it!! Good choice, looking forward to seeing you wet and muddy.... oooo eeeerrrr ;) :p :D :D :D Enjoy!! :)

Sad to hear this.....I went the other way 2019 T7 at launch to MT10 in 2024; After 50,000 on the Tenere all I can say is that I loved it. A great do it all bike. After touring, commuting and long haul trips it never let me down. Only thing I wish it had was cruise control but I think the new ones now have that so no problem there. I would recommend the comfort seat. It was only after a back operation it had to go as I could no longer cope off road or climbing aboard the thing. MT10 is lower and with the comfort seat is no big problem on my back. Do I love my MT10 more.... Yes I do. BUT as you say life moves on, circumstances change and you got to do what you got to do. I have no doubt if it were not for my back I would still have my Tenere, if only I could have afforded to keep it in the garage. Like you im on a one bike rule

I don´t think you are doing the wrong thing. As awesome as the MT-10 is, you will have a completely different experience on the T7 all together. A different type of fun. And in my opinion a very good sounding bike as well. Just look at the videos of Adam Riemann from Australia. He usually puts Akrapovic on his T7s and they sound great. But if you have the time and can afford it, get a training as soon as possible and better even on dirtbikes. I just learn it the hard way, that trying to figure the dirt stuff out on a 250kg GS is not the smartest move. To be fair, I was certain about it not being smart before I bought the bike, but I still didn´t do anything about it🤣

Hi Tim, I've been watching your journey with the MT10-SP and to be honest, I wanted one, ideally yours with the mods you've done to it, but finances fell a little short and was looking for something the wife wouldn't complain about to much being on the back of, so ruled the MT10 out, so went out on a limb, I have purchased a Voge DS900X for a bit touring and hopefully some TET tracks. Seems ok so far but sorely depressed that I cant afford yours, otherwise I'd be there in the morning.

I think ABR are interested because of the adventures you have rather than the off road bit, and their whole set up at Ragley Hall is to give adventure bike riders their first taste of riding in mud. But to switch bikes is quite a commitment. Try riding a mountain bike with knobbly tyres on the road… Good luck with it though. And the press bikes should give the balance and keep the thrill alive

I would seriously consider downsizing my 1250GSA to the new T7 Rally. My only gripe is the lack of traction control. My bike is my daily driver and used every day in all weathers. Enjoy your new T7 when you do get it. I also parted with my RSV4 of 4 years in September and though the plan was to get something "just powerful enough for the street" (aka RS 660), I ended up getting a 2024 Hayabusa in the metallic gray/daring red colorway. 😂 Truth be told, if the dealer and their supplier weren't all out, I would have gotten the RS, but somewhere in the process of waiting for EICMA and Aprilia's offering for the next year, my 2 brain cells kinda short-circuited and I started looking at the Busa and eventually went for it because YOLO. 🤘 Haven't ridden it yet but if it doesn't fit me, I will never admit it. 😆 I have seen your review of it about 10,000 times by now and got seriously enthralled, so here's hoping it's going to live up to the hype. 🤞

Good choice of bike! I went from 2017 BMW R1200r sport (yes, they do other models, not just a GS!), to a 2023 KTM 790 Adventure, because I wanted to go off road. A drop from 125bhp to 92(?)bhp. 125nm torque, to around 80?! No regrets!! I did try the T7, belonged to a mate, didn't get on with it, unfortunately, it's what I wanted. Aprilia? way too unreliable (loads of sensor issues, according to warranty manager of a local dealership) I'd recommend, crash protection, bark busters and waterproof saddle bags, NOT a top box! Makes them very top heavy! I run Anlas Capra-X tyres, 50/50 tyres (allegedly), I'd say more 60/40, 60 off road, 40 on. Good grip off road, not bad at all on road, and last quite well. I think, mid size ADV bikes, is the way to go, too many restrictions, speed cameras etc. aanndd.......they're bloody good fun! Enjoy, looking forward to the videos

I'm 6ft4 and went from sports bikes to nakeds then Adventure bikes purely for the improved riding ergonomics. Of course once you own an adventure bike, the many many videos of people off roading them are enticing. Then you try it on your £10k plus Adventure bike and realise that way leads to broken bike parts with huge bills plus the added side order of broken arms and legs. Thats where something like a T7 comes in. Until you ride one, then you realise, its still too heavy, handles on the road like a 1980s enduro with a keg of beer strapped to the tank and off road, is a similar experience. Oh and it too costs circa £10k and is quite capable of breaking your leg if you drop it. For that reason I came to the inevitable conclusion that I need two bikes. A decent road bike, naked or Adventure style (its never going off road) and a teeny tiny trail bike which takes up the smallest corner of my garage. Sorted!. By the way, I found the Ducati 800 Scrambler X, a way better road bike experience, almost supermoto like. I haven't ridden one on a trail, but plenty of people do, even in the UK.

In the 80's my XT600 Ténéré was a great bike. I was living in Tanzania at the time, so the current version should be well-suited to British roads. An ultra-reliable and strong bike that could outpace an angry bull elephant. Just in case you worry about such things, Mr Rodie.

I love my 22 MT10. I keep looking at other bikes but it does everything. Been on R1s Zx10s RSVs the lot. But at my tender 53 years this is the absolute ideal bike for me. Some things that do my head are though.... Taking the rear wheel oit to clean etc is a right PITA. General maintenance, taking the tank off wtc is rhe same. To ride, norhing better, to do general maintenance and cleaning, average. Stil tempted to put a Rocket 3 next ro her in the garage though

I have a self-imposed one-bike rule as well, just to not go bankrupt, and it's meant the same for me. I just sold my Superduke, and honestly I'd planned to get an MT-10 SP just like yours because of your videos... but then I saw a Z900RS SE and thought, "hey, I've never owned a cool retro bike". I was worried about the downgrade, in both tech and HP, but so far it's been great.

Mt-10 is an intriguing bike for sure! I was toying with the idea of putting an MT-10 in my garage as I want to sell the s1000rr. Last week I ended up with a Ducati Desert x rally to test against my almost new T7 rally for an epic trip from Germany to Morocco and back (via Sierra Nevada, Algarve, Picos, and Pyrenees) I must say initial thoughts the DDXR is so so so much more fun than the T7. I don't care about everyone complaining about price as it's definitely worth it for me. I'm actually considering selling everything and only keeping the Duc. You'll enjoy the T7, however it's slow (especially if you're used to a fast bike) and top heavy but that motor is a peach and will look after you! Also for offroad, lose the Str tires (in mud they are unpredictable) and get a 50/50 tire like dunlop trailmax raids.

Yup, I did have my heart set on a DesertX Rally - there are some good deals out there at the moment. But I've a feeling it'll get a significant upgrade at the end of 2025, so I may as well hold fire, get good off-road then buy a new one next year…

@@BrokeGuyDan they’ve got a whole new V2 engine which has similar power but weighs something like 20kg less than the Testastretta. That’s gonna make a huge difference
@thomaslouwagie126810 күн бұрын
@@timrodierides I am also interested to see what improvements the new engine will bring to the Desertx but it wont be 20kg lighter. The new one for the panigale v2 is up to 5.8kg lighter than the testastretta. The one used in the new multi v2 (and i presume the new Desertx) will have a heavier flywheel and more powerfull alternator and so on, so i suspect the difference to be less here. The new engine will be better in some aspects like weight, more refined quickshifter,... but it wont match the low end torque of the current engine just by looking at the bore and stroke. The current Desertx is a great bike and the engine is one of its best features. It is also a well proven engine and that fits the character of the bike. The main downside of the Desertx is that it will cost you much more than whats on the sticker because apart from the electronics it comes pretty bare bones. There are endless aftermarket components available for it for adding protection, luggage, windshields and comfort improvements which the bike needs, and many more useless farkels for us tarts to keep adding.

I went from a FZ1 to a Vstrom 650 so a similar power drop and it's fun and all with plenty power for everyday riding IMO but I do miss some of the craziness of a 100HP+ bike....

Dont be sucked into buying a huge tank like a 1300GS or Tiger 1200. A T7 or Tuareg 660 are much easier to handle offroad and can tour when necessary. Go light go fast.

Been riding for 50 years ! Started on a 250 dirt bike evolved into 1000cc adventure tourers. Raced mx ,enduros, desert racing and even tried my hand at road racing. Clocked up thousands of kilometres touring Australia and New Zealand Japan and SE Asia. Owned a wide variety of bikes now onto number 32 ! What have I learned? off-road riding on a light weight dirt bike is a great way to hone your skills in throttle brake and clutch control and the art of crashing !!! 😂 Whatever you ride there's no better way of exploring the world than on a motorcycle! Enjoy 😀

I have exactly the same thoughts as you. Had a Yamaha MT10SP 2022. Thinking about buying a Yamaha tenere 700 Rally just like you but haven't pulled the trigger yet. It seems like a new MT10 is in the works as it's not possible to order a 2025. Maybe I'll wait and see what it looks like before I decide. It's a real pain to go from Yamaha R1 and Yamaha MT10 to Tenere. Will I find it boring... Im probably the same age as you. tough decision
