Why did I quit and what did I learn?
Although I don't go into detail for privacy reasons (because there really was a LOT that led me to making this decision) I focus out the 3 high level things that led me to making this choice.
Was it all worth it?

The code-switching is EXHAUSTING!! I feel your pain. This is. why I finally decided I'm taking myself to Ghana - after this pandemic. It's my home and just away from the European way of life.

Going to Ghana ? damnnnn I always wanted to go there and do business ( teach tech and do tech ) creating a Ghanian digital hotspot for folks like us. If you need inspiration take this idea with you. By the time I get there i'll FOR SURE join in, as it is my goal to support uplifting Ghana in tech beyond where they are now. Greetings from Belgium - Java software engineer

What is it about yourself and your natural expression that you feel needed suppressing, modifying, or code-switching in order to interact with others? Are you saying you needed to change yourself in order to mingle with white people personally or even in the work place? What is the Ghanaian way of life? If a white guy from the United States were to move to Ghana and get a job, would he need to code-switch his language or behavior in order to cultivate relationship with native Ghanaians? If so, what would he have to do different in order to fit it? Also, obviously Ghana is a single country on an entire continent, and as I am well aware, there is quite the diversity between cultural/religious/attitude differences from one African nation to another... like Europeans. For example Slovenians are not like the Swedish, and people from Ireland are certainly different and do not want to be mistaken as British. Thank you in advance if you have the time to respond and conversate. I'm genuinely interested in hearing what you have to share. Peace.
@Zara-ks9rz

@@coreysavage8584 to summarise, code switching is usually done because non-black coworkers may misinterpret or not understand your natural personality. unfortunately, a lot of this is due to unconscious bias and racial stereotypes. in countries like Ghana where the population is predominantly black whilst you may face other issues, your race won’t be one of them which is often a relief to many. Additionally, Ghanaians and west africans in general tend to be really welcoming to foreigners and people are definitely encouraged to learn the culture and take part which isn’t exactly the case in Western countries. Hope that helped
@coreysavage8584
@coreysavage8584 3 жыл бұрын
@@Zara-ks9rz I understand... It is nice of you to be so thoughtful and reply to my question. I'm a code-switcher extraordinaire myself! Although, I do not assume that switching up my energy to flow with the environment I'm in means I'm supressing my natural self. I experience it as having flexibility of character and adaptable energy. Every culture is different from nation to nation... and within nations many sub-cultures exist with their own unique expression, dialect, and slang... Breaking stereotypes and engaging many different cultures of people has enriched my Life and Love. I'm a white kid, born handicapped(missing half leg), adopted by a Japanese father, grew up hangin out with gangbangers n'' drug dealers, boyscouts n' churchgroups, listening(and singing) to R&B n' playing jazz sax... eventually i learned meditation, lived with Monks, taught meditation... then moved back into the world. I still make friends of ex-cons and former bangers. From sinners to saints and everyone between, I can call friends, lovers, and allies in life. And you'd better believe, I "code-switch" ... If I am with my Japanese relatives, my energy and tone shift to reflect their more subdued low-key super respectful nature. They're more quiet and humble in their expression.... If I'm with my homeboys from the YayArea CA gettin hyphy, bumpin MacDre, E-40, havin a smoke ... I can express my bravado, cuss n' holler, be my loud zero fuks given type of self lol... HUGE difference. You see I got some hood in me, it's just a part of who I am... a PART... Because I see ones ability to flow seamlessly from one environment and culture to the next, as a plus, a positive.... And in each I get to grow in love, friendship, and build bridges in life. When I'm at work, at any job I've had for the most part... I have to cater my energy and behavior to what is professionally acceptable in that environment, to the energies and communication style my co-workers use so we communicate effectively, and to what best serves the client and customer. There is a certain restriction in the professional environment and everyone has to put up with it for the sake of business and making money... just the way it is no matter where you go. I think some black people would be surprised at how many of their non-black co-workers are code-switching themselves. It's kind of a crude term, wrapped up with a lot of negative connotation to be honest. A pertinent question may be, Who is it who has unconscious bias and racial stereotypes? If I go around thinking it is everyone else other than me, it could just be that I'm projecting it... like an unconscious self-protection mechanism... that doesn't heal the issue but only perpetuates it by increasing distance between oneself and others. If I were to make those distances a matter of skin color... I'd only make my reality more lonely, and less joy-filled than it could have been... Love and Kindness are everywhere to be found in nearly all people. Shame to assume it isn't there. Peace.

Felt that toxic environment issue in my heart. Smh, I hate when that happens at a company where you're doing good and growing in. Sorry you went through that Reason why I quit my last job. I was literally building out the APIs helping us sign large enterprise deals. As in, they were pitching APIs that didn't exist, and I had to quickly build them to save the deals lol. And yet, felt unappreciated, and disrespected, by management so I left. Smh, loved my team there too.

The matters you raise I recognise and I refuse to countenance any more! I am much older, and would love to be able to join tech but...I truly hear and relate to the reasons you present as the cause of your quitting. I just turned down the idea of another career path option for the same reason, principally, because in my former career I had to tolerate all of that intensively/low-level and never-endingly. Such a shame for me because, otherwise, I really loved the work!! Out the other side BY SEVERAL YEARS, I am still recovering from the accumulated "job-ptsd." The things you indicate were very evident in the replacement career option I had begun to consider; so that had to go too. So now I have a problem of what to do. Your vid is a timely warning that there could be limited relief to be found in your field, which would anyway demand a lot of retraining (that I would not really mind tbh, I just need to get the zap of enthusiasm for anything and I am away...). You are the second young black techy that I have seen to indicate these same matters today. I expect my feed to pop MORE in now....

Yes there is definitely a lot of issues in the industry like any other. I also think it depends on the field in tech you go into. Whatever you decide, good luck!

If you turn 40, don't think about working for a company as a programmer. I think Tech support will be a better choice. Many managers treat female developers badly even in silicon valley. I'm telling you from my true experience & more than 10 years programming career in the heart of silicon valley. Female voice is not heard in all meetings. When I started to talk, they shut me down. When I told them my new ideas to solve problems between software versions, they turned them ALL down. This frustration encouraged me to freelance in order to have my freedom to grow my career. Now I can code in many languages, modern ui/ux and enjoy every line of my code without worrying about deadlines or my opinions were heard or not. Fully agree. Diversity & Inclusion seems like a marketing exercise in most places - one where minorities are asked to be the 'experts' and do the work for free, on top of the workload they have of course, because they wont make it a serious role/paid position lol. The companies benefit from the ESG marketing, especially those with social/community impact. And their response is to hit you with that gender & race pay-gap cause they think your ass should just be grateful for the opportunity to be there :') Rule 1 of being black in tech: know your worth. Rule 2: know when to dip

I hate to say it but you should run IF.. #1 A tech company overly emphasizes "diversity and Inclusiveness." On the surface this sounds great but is usually an indicator of a culture of the opposite. If you were to take the time to investigate or speak with past employees, I'm almost certain that themes of people not feeling included or heard would be reoccurring. If reviews online indicate a "frat boy like environment," RUN. A frat boy environment usually touches on not only sex and race but also speaks to the existence of favoritism.

I think this is an interesting video about burnout and tech, but it's quite vague. When you say code-switching, it's hard for me to understand what that means... I assume it means one moment you were asked to code Python, another PHP, another JavaScript, etc, etc... but I think you could have made some important points about that, i.e. the many skills required of a modern developer and the difficulty of juggling such demands.

Code-switching is a form of self-censorship to make sure bad things don’t happen to you. It involves adjusting one’s style of speech, appearance, behaviour, and expression in ways that will optimise the comfort of others in exchange for fair treatment, quality service, and employment opportunities i.e. people of colour trying to survive in white environments. Examples: - talking 'white’ and quietly with no slang to counteract the stereotype that people of colour are ‘ghetto’ and ‘overly loud’ - the ‘white’ voice also means you are treated more nicely over the phone, because you are not perceived as a person of colour - not expressing frustration or raising your voice when treated unfairly, because you are stereotyped as being ‘angry’ - not making a fuss or changing your tone when treated unfairly, because you are stereotypes as ‘argumentative’ - changing your hairstyle, because ‘ethnic’ natural hair is considered ‘unprofessional’ - not discussing anything about race, because others will see you playing the ‘race victim’ card - not hanging around with too many other people of colour, because groups of people of colour are seen as ‘threatening’ and ‘taking over’ - not helping other people of colour, because you are helping them play the ‘race victim’ card - not eating traditional food, because ‘ethnic’ food is seen as ‘smelly’ and draws attention to you

I had to look it up. Its a completely normal phenomenon that everyone deals with when they get a job. When your boss asks you to stay late you don't say the first thing that jumps into your head and instead say something vaguely professional and compliant.

@@purpleowl2075 How is that any different than professional conduct? Professional conduct involves adjusting one’s style of speech, appearance, behaviour, and expression in ways that will optimise the comfort of others in exchange for fair treatment, quality service, and employment opportunities. i am listening to you, but i just felt you were beating around the bush, really wish you had just say what was on your mind. I could hear you were so busy trying to be careful with your words, that was distracting, and I don't really feel I truly know what really happened that drove you to decide.

I hear you! When making this video my feeling about the situation were still kinda fresh. I definitely didn’t want to say anything that could offend anyone involved. But ultimately it was the people. I felt misunderstood, betrayed and things got to the point where the toxic environment wasn’t worth it anymore.

2 points: first- Its all exhausting! The 9-5, 8 hour day frame work is out dated. It just drains the employees. And as a woman it drains your feminine nature trying to work a job that you don't like. It takes so sooooooo much energy to stay put, grin and bear it. I need therapy every day after i clock out.second- Unfortunately black women in tech especially in management and any upper level position of power and importance, is rare-its designed this way in corporate. I'm getting out soon and very soon. thanks for your vid.

Preach sis! I think a big reason why I went into freelance is because I have some form of PTSD from my previous experiences and just don't want to go through it again. Know that you are not alone and be sure to take care of yourself until you can find a situation that is more suitable for you. You deserve it!!

I hope your future prospective employers watch this video so that they have an idea of what they are in for. Giving one day notice is pretty inexcusable and it hurts your own reputation. If they had just dirtied you in some way, it might be justified. But if your justification is that you felt "tired", then it makes you sound lazy. We all have to code-switch into office lingo and yeah, it sucks but most people manage. If you care about diversity then you should be sending the message "Black Women have a lot to offer the tech world, you should consider hiring more of them". The message you're sending is "Black Women have a really hard time adjusting to office life and might peace out unexpectedly".

Yes I agree 100% about leaving with less than 2 weeks. I got a call from an prospective employer for a former employee and the main question she asked was did the person give 2 weeks notice. Luckily they did. So yea, not good practice at all.

Thank you so much for saying this! I didn't give much detail and didn't mention this in the video but my supervisor actually approached me the day before about me moving on. She noticed how I was feeling and I honestly don't think she had the capacity or experience to train me the way I needed. Since I had a big project coming up I decided it was best to go not only for myself but also to not have to leave in the middle of the project.

I agree on normal circumstances! Would never do that again. (replied to the above comment) But also since I was in a tech startup the pace was faster and this late notice was actually more common at company than at a typical corporate setting

@@nicoleyoungtech supervisors move on, she might not be in the position to explain to the perspective employer those details. Eventually the reasons get lost and all that gets relayed is the ‘no she didn’t give notice’. This hurts your reputation and the tech world dealing with our chosen profession is a very small world and down the road these things have a way of resurfacing and impacting your career without your knowledge. I have countless examples of this.
