Note to humorless people- this video came out April 1st, take a hint.
Note number 2: I know how to work a camera. I am not an idiot.
I actually DID return the A7 IV. Not because I didn't know how to use it (that was called HUMOR) but
1. because of the stupid extra-step lower mode dial that requires a third button to be pushed in before it even turns
2. It DOES overheat (I said it doesn't but it does)
3. The Eye AF is no better than my A7C or A7III with updated firmware (I wanted to see if it was)
4. The EVF viewfinder is no better than the A7III to the naked eye (I wanted to see if it was)
5. 33 MP is not a noteworthy jump from 24MP
6. I don't need 10000000 MB/s codecs
A7 IV owners will obviously try to validate their overhyped purchase, well I'm glad you like it so much. I returned mine and that's that. Now chill and stop taking this video so seriously.

It's wild. I also spent my own money on the A7IV, and the primary reason I love it is the exact mode dial switcher you dislike. As a content creator who constantly switches between photo and video, I love storing 3 distinct memory recall settings for each photo and video. On top of that, having the custom buttons do completely different things for photo and video (like AE and White Balance lock in video, when I have no need for that in photo mode). This camera was definitely made for people like me.

It's funny to me that pretty much all of the reasons you don't like the A7iv, are the reasons I do like it. That stills/movie/S&Q switch was a bit of a game-changer for me, especially using the custom settings. It allows me to switch from photo to video much quicker, without having to dick around with changing the settings all the time. The additional megapixel count seems to make the footage look more detailed without adding additional sharpening, and it also makes the APSC mode a lot more viable for wildlife stuff. I've found the autofocus pretty good so far, at least for wildlife. I'm not all that much into portrait photography. I never really had too many problems with my Sony A7rii or my A7c overheating, and I used both to film long event videos, so I don't see much of a change there. Comparatively though, the viewfinder is a huge step up from the A7c. That viewfinder was pretty much unusable. My experiences have been great so far, but I will acknowledge that the button layout and menus are nowhere as intuitive as my Panasonic GH5. I could pretty much take photos and video with my eyes closed using that camera

Its a poor dial design you just don't know any better. Nikon you flick a switch your thumb you dont have to look up to a dial on the top of the camera you just use your thumb and it automatically saves your last settings - thats it - its the fastest way to switch.
@hiawrj
@hiawrj 2 жыл бұрын
@@markshirley01 hmm, but I'm also just flipping a switch now, to go from stills to movie mode and to slowmotion mode. I hate that I have to push in that button to do it though. I don't understand why dials needs to have buttons. I just want to turn them. The thing I dislike the most about the a7 IV is the build quality of the rubber, the card slot door being janky and the hdmi door flapping far out. This is not a problem in my other Sony cameras. Even the a7 III had better card slot door and rubber grip material.

@hiawrj
@hiawrj 2 жыл бұрын
@@superzero4250 You can just turn that on. Eye AF is better, and and works from slightly further away and in more video modes and theres now tracking. But a7iii eye af is still very good. Also more af calculations per second, 60 now compared to 20 before. So when you rapidly track focus on something coming towards you, then you will see better results. A7iii is still very good and a7iv isnt perfect either - but it is better on everything except for maybe built quality.

It almost feels wrong that my smile grew bigger and bigger as the rant went on. I kept thinking that this was meant for tomorrow but was released a day early. I watched to the end for that "what the heck I'm keeping it" moment but then lost my smile upon hearing 85% don't even bother to say thank you when they win. So, on behalf of the voiceless (intentionally or otherwise), my hat is tipped and thumbs are up. Thank you! Oh BTW, neat trick with the pitch transposer, and I caught the snippet of normal you snuck in there for the briefest moment. Oh... and I do have the A7 IV and I'm keeping it, but it's not that exciting of a camera. Have had a bout with G.A.S. and also have an R5, Lumix S5, and S1h. That's it for me... no more cameras! I totally feel where you’re coming from with the spec sheet thing. I’ve only done a few camera/gear reviews, from a perspective that my audience (hairdressers and barbers- not photographers) might appreciate and I regularly get comments from photographers telling me I’m an idiot because I talk about what it feels like to use the lens and how easy it is to pack for a day at the salon instead of reading the spec sheets and shooting test charts with it. I actually really appreciate that your reviews tend to be more like that and less about spec sheets.

his opinion is a rush to judgement, and many things about his argument are subjectively wrong. evf is very noticeable if you manual focus a lot, camera preview is slow and turned off because people complained (sony listens), mode for stills and video makes it true hybrid camera, switching exposure modes in video has always been a pain and btw, three extra custom mode settings. the menu is hard to get because sony listens and rebuilt from ground up, tossed out the bad, in with the new. there are many subtle changes that make it vastly better, as well as a new orientation will definitely make users disoriented, it's a more improved copy of how panasonic does things. people selling off free stuff instead of the intended target is complete bs.

Well if you're a photographer only no need to upgrade. But a hybrid shooter will love this camera. 10bit recording, flip out screen, and 4k 60 yeah I know it's cropped but still better than not having it. Face detect AF is a major improvement. Try taking a group photo at f2.8 with the a7iii and then try with the a7iv. The dial Markus hates is heaven sent.

Sorry it didn't work out for you Markus! I personally upgraded from the a7ii so it was a vast improvement for me with respect to pretty much every detail. I hear you about the menus being a convoluted mess at first. One thing I do love though is that Sony has added custom menus so you can add any setting to a personalized tab for QUICK and easy access. I think they recognized from all the feedback they received that their menus can be challenging to navigate which is why they offered this genius fix. The setting you were looking for was under [Setup > Display Option (Yellow brief case) > Auto Review.] As you can imagine, this is indeed buried in the menus, which is why I love their new custom menus. Eye AF - Sony released new firmware to address their eye AF literally today. It's been a known issue in Sony circles. As you mentioned the "influencers" definitely did not bring this up though. Infact, it's not really been discussed in the mainstream camera channels at all. Love your videos Markus, thanks for putting out content!

Funny as this is one of the main reasons I've been eyeballing this camera. An actual "faster" way to get to the video/photo option of the camera. The video and photo selections are completely opposite of each other on the dial. It would be a different story if they were right next to each other. :D

The Movie/Stills mode is one of the top reasons I chose the A7iv too! It's my 1st full frame camera. I was eyeing the R6 for a year and just when finally getting ready to purchase it, the Sony was announced. My other Camera is an M50 Canon, but unlike the R6, it has the 2 modes right next to each other. The R6 you need to turn the dial all the way to the other position. I do a lot of my work in the dark, so the a7iv switch makes it so easy to select between modes. And I actually prefer the 4k60 crop, because I can get more reach at concerts by using my gf's APS-C Sony crop 55-210mm lens. It's small and stealth ;) I'm not the kind of person who likes to "upgrade" often so I'm sure I won't be "influenced" by anyone to get a new one for at least a decade or more.

@@mrphoto Sony improved their menu system and made it touch screen, like Canon's (still not as good as Canon's but close). I prefer the flip out screen overall (but would be OK with the tilt up too, and sometime do prefer the tilt up) and I love that you can assign which settings carry over between still and movie. It's not the perfect camera for everyone, but it is for me. I think you'll love it! BTW, I am pretty sure this was just an April Fools joke because what he said about the camera is not all true. I can easily shoot videos in stills mode, find the setting to allow me to immediately and automatically see a preview of the photo I just took and the menus are much easier to use than the older systems. Plus this camera overheats a little quicker than the older mark iii. I'm waiting to see when and how he reveals that it was a joke, ha ha.

Great April 1st video he he. I get the point on the A7IV button changes. From a design point of view, any changes to current configuration has to be justified by a significant benefit that outweighs the change. This does not seem to be the case however, especially on account of all the marginal updates they made for this camera. Design Evolution is not something that gets passed from project team to project team, and end users pay the price for it most of the time. I'm also not a fan of those marketing goals where the teams commit to releasing a new model every x months/years, and do so regardless of the technological advances, even when few and far between (classic example is the Apple cultists who update their phones every end of year, with mixed results every time). Then you have the influencers and social media pushing for a product that 10-15% of those who own it use it for their actual job (be it photographers or videographers), with the incentive from the manufacturer. In the 1900s we had a name for those people, sell-outs. My favorite takeaway is that not only are most people humorless, but also that they put their focus on the tool, rather than the skill to get the job done. The fact that you were able to switch cameras and complete the shoot without hesitation or loss of quality of the final product speaks of that skill and experience, the tools themselves are only as good as the person behind them. "Sharknado would have been 1000 times a better movie if they had shot it with Panaflex" Said no one EVER. :P

Your older video of the whole spectrum on "cheap to good" camcorders was funny as hell, but also quite practical. The amount of time you must have put into that is mind boggling. That right there is priceless. Our sons and daughters need to learn respect. Onward.

Its too bad that people are jerks and non appreciative as you are so generous. What a shame but unfortunately doesn’t surprise me that they put stuff on eBay. Thanks for the good honest feedback on the a7iv. There are not many folks I trust to give honest reviews but you are one of the couple. Keep up the good content.

While I agree there is a frustrating learning curve with the A7iv it is in fact an amazing camera. As a hybrid shooter and as someone who has used digital cameras for as long as they have existed...I can honestly say this is the best camera...by far...I have ever owned. Just as you said in your audio series you need to learn how to use it and not expect to just turn it on and have it produce the greatest results. I honestly think you would love this camera if you would put in the work to learn it and get it set up the way you like to work.

I don't need to learn there is an extra step knob I dont want and you have to push in a second knob just to turn the damn thing. I don't need to learn anything to see the viewfinder is no better. I know how to use eye AF and its no better than the other cameras with updated firmware.

@@MarkusPixthis is the key right here. In the end, it's all about preference. Personally being able to switch between video and photo with the seperate customized button layouts would be faster and a benefit. But you're an old pro who has an established method. Who would want to hinder and mess with a system that is proven to work for an artist? That's your flow

I too have been frustrated when I give away really good gear to people. They don’t seem to appreciate it. So at 67, I am in the process of setting up a “Creative Space” for my local community. I am structuring it along the lines of a Maker Space. I plan on passing on my knowledge by helping people learn and work with the gear and use my small studio. I will watch and find those that really need good gear and gift appropriately at the right time. I know you and Cara have helped so many people, including myself, and you have very little free time. But in my case, I am making the time. I pray that it will start to run itself over time and will hopefully help many struggling creatives.

Appreciate the honesty and your frustration. I would imagine that some of the "influencers" you spoke of hesitate to be too honest with their reviews because of fear of having a falling out with the manufacturers. Who knows. And your right, who cares what the others think. Just keep doing what you are doing. It is appreciated and needed. Anyway have a great day.

Oh, forgot to say - I have owned the A73 since launch and ordered the A74 in the hope of something so significant - I returned it. It is 10% better than the A73 at a push in some areas but what a huge premium you pay for that. I soon realised I was addicted to having the latest stuff. I think Sony did this as a parts bin, to keep up to speed with instil demand from the influencers to review and earn dosh - it has small increments of improvement - sensor, autofocus (hmm), flippy screen (hmmm) , A7S3 grip, better menu system (hmm). The A73 will go down as a milestone camera that had a huge impact on the market and just look at those second hand prices and you can still buy new. The 4 will be forgotten as an incremental step to the A75 or 6 in 2024 (that will be worth waiting for as it will be a parts bin from the A1 lol ). There you go no chance of Sony sending me free gear now!
