I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis about 7 years ago. I thought, at first, that I would never be healthy. But instead of giving up I switched to a plant based diet and now it's been over 4 years since I had an episode. I have a kid now, and I lift 4-6 days a week. My MS is in remission. Thank you for sharing. It's good to see that the people you look up to have struggles too. That being said, I'm sorry you had to go through that. And I'm glad you're feeling better.

@Aaron Downey actually the human body can pretty much recover or revert almost any condition. Especially those essentially caused by the body itself. A plant based diet isnt for everyone, but many people, especially women, thrive more readily on these diets. You never really know what your body can do till you give your body what it needs. Many men, its good for short term, but long term can be a struggle. And, before you even ask, yes i did study medicine, though ive since retired from it.

I say plant based as opposed to vegan because I'm not super strict and I still use honey, leather, etc. Vegan is more of a lifestyle. As for my statement about my condition being in remission, that was a doctor that tools me that, I didn't make it up. And yes, I researched MS treatments heavily before I decided to go plant based, because there IS tons of evidence for a low saturated fat diet in the treatment of MS. Google it.

My husband had grave's disease from the time he was 12 till about 20. Then he developed Hashimoto disease. As I was listening to you describe your experience I looked at my husband and said, "OMG she has Grave's disease" then you acknowledged it. I am so happy that you were able to get the treatment you need. You look amazing and are an inspiration to me. Love what you do and who you are and you'll never go wrong!

I can't wait to share your video with my daughter. She just got into working out and weights last summer then suffered 3rd-degree chemical burns to her right leg in an accident and had skin grafts and 5 surgeries (with 5 more planned for this year). She has only been back in the gym a few months and still cannot work out legs and some days is so down and discouraged. I know listening to your journey will be an inspiration to her!

Thanks so much for sharing this! I was diagnosed with Stills Disease in 2016 and it changed my life in a split second. I went from training 5-6 days a week to not being able to walk. I remember my first workout after 5 months of recovery- I couldn't do a single pushup and could barely life 10lbs. I totally understand that feeling of being defeated. I was able to find my way back to being strong and following you has always contributed to that. Glad to hear you are healthy!

So glad you discussed this with us. I got a super bad case of Rhabdo 7 years ago and it also led to Graves. I didn't notice anything at first and then one day I noticed that I was cramping all the time, couldn't sleep, my heart was beating @ 120 bpm's, and little did I know that my kidney's were shutting down. Eventually, even with changing up my diet and exercise, I had to start doing dialysis. I got to the point that I was wanting to pass away because I would tell my friends that when you lose your health you lose EVERYTHING. I eventually received a kidney from a friend of mine that was an Army Ranger with me. Afterwards I thought I was "getting back to normal" and started doing Jiu Jitsu, lifting, and then I got slammed with a second bout of Rhabdo. I still work out and although you try something else your body is still being put under the same routine as it was before you decided to change things up. I can train at close to 60% of the level that I used to but I had to leave Jiu Jitsu because of my transplant. After living with a transplanted organ and Rhabdo for over 5 years now the one thing I can tell you is to keep it f'ing real with yourself. If it eventually means that you cannot do a lot of the things that you can do now just remember that we need you around for motivation more than anything else. Thank you so much for sharing young lady and I will keep watching you and the hubby. Peace.

It’s funny how certain things happen that give us a new perspective on life. Prior to quarantine, I was big into the whole lifting game. But what I didn’t realize was how monotonous it had become for me! I was so focused on how much weight I lifted that the fun disappeared. I have since switched to more HIIT based strength training, and it made me realize how my cardiovascular fitness took a huge hit. “If you’re stuck, try something else”. Best advice I have heard this week. Thank you and God bless.

Anthony Fagan that’s fantastic! That’s how I train, HIIT, weights, and cardio. It’s a more functional approach and the focus is on overall health, not what numbers you’re putting up and size focused. Muscular development will still occur, with so many other benefits also. Happy for you!

Switching things up is awesome. I was an endurance athlete for 20 years, then I though I would lift more then I went back and forth about what I wanted to do. Just curious what are you referring to as a conditioning coach? Strength and Conditioning? I coach the way she is trying now as well, but with more olympic moves. Glad she is going healthy. My guess is the thumbs down comes from those who don't like the "fake natty" thing, which she will never live down. I don't agree with bodybuilding at all, and I am happy when more people promote healthy and fun exercise. Good for her.

Thanks for sharing this, I’m not usually someone who comments on youtube but I wanted to explain why I think it’s so important, and relatable. Early last year I developed hyperthyroidism. I went from rock climbing, calisthenics and running on ‘rest days’, to having to sit down to catch my breath when moving between the rooms of my apartment. When my doctor told me that she thought it might be Grave’s disease, she was surprised that I didn’t have a stronger reaction, that I wasn’t more concerned. My goofy brain was thinking ‘oh, Missy Elliott has that’. Honestly, knowing of people out there successfully managing a condition really is comforting in those moments. It means that instead just being a diagnosis & a list of symptoms, you have some idea of what it looks like to cope. Once things were a bit more under control I saw an exercise physiologist - my body weight squats were shaky, and push-ups were a memory. The stuff I used to do wasn’t really as appealing at that time, it didn’t feel as achievable as I thought it should. I got really dismayed struggling through what used to be a warm up... I ended up joining a powerlifting gym. It was something totally new and different for me, new skills to learn, and being able to really see numbers so clearly was a new way for me to track progress. I started watching more stuff on youtube about my new lifting hobby, got recommended the Brute Showdown & have been following you ever since. (& sometimes I re-watch the deadlift session to get hyped before I go to the gym) I'm still lifting, and got back into climbing - stronger than ever, and with much better shoulder stability.

Thank you for sharing your story. I think it will help more people than you know. I suffered from an autoimmune condition that caused rapid weight loss (when I was already fairly lean), from about 180 to 130 in about two months culminating in a week stay in the hospital when electrolyte balances became a problem. It’s a very isolating experience so having stories to draw strength from is important.

I know this is from 6 months ago, but you tube just fed to me today as I just started following you. I also had Graves’ disease. I missed my flags for the most part and I’m a nurse!!! I felt so silly when I finally was diagnosed. My legs were shaking just walking down the stairs and I was like, “damn I need to stop drinking so much coffee!” It took a while to get mine under control (I went with the medication option rather than get rid of my thyroid), but I can tell you that I had a total remission. I wasn’t looking for that, I would have been ok with sticking to lifelong management. But I too started to naturally change in my life and finding more and more of my happiness naturally led me to greater adrenal stability. I was able to cut back on the dose of the medication and eventually quit. I don’t even show antibodies anymore which is unusual. Follow your interests as you are, be you, as you do. Learn from your challenges health Bday otherwise. It looks like you do that too. Thanks for being you. You clearly inspire lots of people. Including me.

When your stuck try something else. It’s so true!! I did bodybuilding for 2 years. I lifted like a bodybuilder it’s all I knew. When I stopped doing shows and just tried to stay in shape I lost my focus. I would get bored with my workouts every time. Plus being a personal trainer and working in gym all day I lost my motivation. I would train people all day long and then when it came time to train myself I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to think I wanted someone to tell me what to do. I tell people what to do all day long haha. I am so grateful for DLB Daily it got me back into the swing of things. Also I decided to go back to obstacle course racing and I love it. I have been competing in Spartans the past 2 years. Earned my first trifecta in 2019! Dana, you have always been a role model athlete to look up to and this video proves it again. Thank you for sharing your story and this priceless outlook. I started working out when I was 34, I was weak as a twig but actually overweight. In two years of consistent weight training and great nutrition/sleep, I have managed to get somewhat jacked (or so I'm told) and I have not been healthier or more confident in my life. I have autoimmune hypothyroidism, I haven't made the same progress as most women my age make in terms of weights and I have more rest days (3-4 days a week!) than most but progress is progress for me and my physical results have been amazing. And I think part of that is actually because I rest so much! It's easy to get lost in comparing yourself to others and their results, pace etc. But the best way to go is to find what works best for you and always look forward.

I have chronic pain and chronic fatigue and I was a just keep pushing no matter what. A lot of people you idolize either have or are on there way to a wall. People are not indestructible and if you red line for long enough you will blow a gasket. If you feel like if you don’t get a break something is going to go wrong stop don’t wait for someone to notice you need a break just open up and let people know you’re not doing well.

I have a very difficult health condition myself and seeing how you push through things and how those around you support you gives me hope to keep pushing myself. You and your husband give me hope and motivation to try something new daily. I’m grateful to have come across you both somehow through social media. Keep pushing and I’ll keep you both in prayer. Thank you for sharing your story. When you started describing the symptoms, I recognized it. I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease while in the military and everyone just thought I was faking fatigue to not train. My ex thought I was over reacting. (He’s a big fan of yours!). This helps others understand how bad Grave’s Can really be. If it could have that effect on someone as fit and strong as you, it could happen to anyone and bring anyone to their knees. So thank you for sharing.

I've watched and been inspired by your training(and Rob's music) for what feels like a decade. I think it is safe to say all of us fans love you very much and thank you for being an inspiration by just being you. You are a testament to the idea of never giving up. I thank you for showing that it's okay to fall, rest and even cry. Or dare I say, be human? Your perseverance and willpower to accepting the challenges life can throw and then pushing to being the best form you can be is something we can all benefit from adopting. I had surgery for a hernia 6 years ago. I still looked to people like you for inspiration and pushed myself in other aspects of life. But honestly, I never overcame my newfound fear of weights and exercise. I thought running and walking hurt. Bending over hurt. Lifting weights hurt. Over the years I might of pushed beyond my limits in work, college, and other fields. But I let my fear take my once proud body and mold it into what I have today. Before watching your video, I managed to pick myself up and kick myself into gear. I began cleaning up my diet and have been eating healthier and at appropriate times. I began walking every day and enjoying being able to feel limber again. Yesterday I grabbed some resistance bands and did some familiar movements. I was so scared to look down at my shirt because I felt my heart beating so hard. I thought it was gonna pop out lol. But I realized I wasn't in pain. Soon I calmed my breathing down and felt my fear going away. My heart rate slowed down and I actually lifted with intensity again. I felt like my old body was back. I might not look like I did at 21 right now, but your story has really pushed my dedication to becoming the best form that I can be in overdrive. Thank you! It is fine even if you don't get to read this. It just feels good to tell someone how I was feeling for all these years. I accept that it is never too late to do what you want. I also accept the challenge life has put in my way all these years. I can't wait to see what you look like in 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, or in another 10 years. I also can't wait to see how I look at each interval too. I hope I get to meet you and Rob at a fitness expo one day and be able to thank you both.

It takes a strong person to admit to life struggles and then face them head on and make positive changes. You're a great woman, I admire you and follow you and the bodybuilding community for inspiration. I have a special medical needs daughter along w other children and I have life struggles every single day. I am a non professional body builder but train very hard and eat strict as part of my life. It can be hard to train or even find time to train or eat some days but it is my salvation. Thank you for sharing your story. Keep pushing forward and use that struggle you face as fuel to keep going and loving what you do. God Bless.

You literally did not have to say you had Graves’ disease . As soon as you explained your symptoms I had the exact same symptoms. I lost 25lbs in a span of 2 months. And I was eating like crap not working out .my heart rate would not go under 120bpm . Just this month it went under 100bpm after 2 years since being diagnosed. I recently just started going back to the gym and adding cardio into my workout and I’m starting not feeling winded . Thank you for sharing ! I felt so defeated myself when getting diagnosed.

Damn Dana you had me in tears listening to this. I look up to you so much. Watching your new training it reminds me of how I started doing fitness just the more body weight style of working out I always looked super fit and I have had hypothyroidism since I was 8. I didn't start lifting until I was around 20yoa. Went from 145 to 160. Your thyroid really does have a big impact I can tell when I forget a dose of my meds or not but I've managed to stay pretty fit and active. For me its just like every one has always said don't let others tell you you can't do something. I never thought I would bench 315 then I did and I was like wow what else can I do let me try dead lifts got to 510 then I was like many let me try squats I got to 325. I have researched thyroid so much and all I read on ppl with hypothyroid is they feel tired all the time and depressed and they sleep all day long and they don't go to work and if you let that mind set take over you won't enjoy life but I feel like people like you and me are proof that if you put your mind to something you can do what ever you want keep kicking ass gurl !

Thank you so much for telling your story. It has helped me in my own struggles with being a marathon runner / weight lifter. I was burning myself out training for my 3rd Boston in the heat of South FL. I was miserable, tired and losing my love for running. When they cancelled Boston due to the virus, I felt weight was lifted. We moved to south FL 18 months ago and my speed has suffered greatly and I have been struggling with it. I have been a runner for 14 yrs. When they cancelled Boston I decided to stop running and focus on some biking and building more muscle in the gym. I do the stair master, elliptical and bike. I have been watching your videos and subscribed to your website. I even do intermittent fasting on lift days which I have never done before. I have not felt this good and this strong in a long time. I have tried something else and I am loving the way I feel. I a going to be 50 in November and I look and feel amazing with building more strength and muscle. Thank you so much for sharing and you are truly and inspiration. It is ok to change it up, It really is ok. I wish you good health and you are a warrior!!!

Ive had graves diease since i was 24 and im 44now. I had removal of thyroid. Im still lifting and still competing. Its always been a struggle to put on weight for shows. But im also 5'9. Im finally 180lbs. Coming up on my last season i believe next year. Ever since i had removal i never felt better. I tend to over train and train like DLB. This year i have cut back on training sets and finally getting ahead. Im on sythroid 200mcg. And t3 5mcg. Yes im always on the go as well. With all that jumping is great when your not so heavy in muscle. Im very much looking forward to getting back to functional training. Thank you DLB for coming out. Knowing your not indestructible makes feel like im normal. Keep on kicking ass.

This is perfect timing for me personally. I am about to turn 45 and I am used to the grind of heavy lifting and miles and miles of running along with a very low calorie diet (I know that combination doesn't make much sense but...) I have kept this up for well over a decade. In the past month, I have dealt with extreme foot pain and body aches. I could barely walk after a run and my lifting turned to crap. I went to the doctor, I am perimenopausal with plantar fasciitis and early onset arthritis. Great, but what? Life stops? I don't know how to live without feeling the grind in the workout. I am trying to figure a new plan, a balanced plan that will focus on the health of my mind, body, and spirit. I love to find honesty and I appreciate you and I am reinspired that I can figure this out too.

Life doesn’t stop, but it does take some turns. I’m an avid fitness person and I’ve had to alter my routine due to getting older. Recovery really starts to take top priority. It’s strangely empowering though. I don’t like it, but it’s a challenge I’m taking on. Health and fitness are too important to not prioritize and being an older athlete can be rewarding. You’re not alone and I’m routing for you!

Dana thank you for sharing your diagnosis of Graves disease. I have had it for 20 years and my symptoms started just like yours. I chose to have RAI and had the procedure done twice because symptoms came back. I , like you was training like I always do and noticed a dramatic weight, tremors, weakness in the upper extremities and tachycardia. You will also find you will be susceptible to other autoimmune diseases like Celiac, in which I was diagnosed with that 12 years ago. I am a personal trainer and firefighter/ medic and I have been following your KZbin channel for a while and I love your workouts and if you ever have any questions about this disease, I would be happy to speak with you about it. Take care and I am happy that you are doing better.

Thank you for sharing...you are such an inspiration. My Hubby and I were training partners for years and years and then I got Hashimotos, and went hypothyroid...and gained 10 lbs a month (3 months in a row) with no change to diet or workout. I went from biking to the gym several times a week, to not being able to lift my body off the mattress or couch or wherever I was passing out including falling asleep behind the wheel at red lights and conking out before and after every meal. It has been a lifestyle change to say the least. I still grieve the loss of my old lifestyle... it was a major adjustment. But I do what I can! Glad you are feeling better...you look beautiful!
