In this episode I talk about the 3.6 Pentastar V6 available in the Dodge Challenger and Charger SXT and GT models, as well as many other models throughout Chryslers lineup. What's good about it, should you modify it, what mods should you do? We tackle that and more this week.
08:14 Driving impressions.
14:41 What mods should you do to your 3.6?

I was the Program Manager on the 3.6L Pentastar engine program between 2006-2008, and left Chrysler just as development was being completed. Before that, I was an engine development Sr. Engineer on other Chrysler engines. I appreciate the love here for the Pentastar, it was a great team & engine to work on. :) Chrysler has always had great engine engineers, and hugely upgraded their development & durability testing processes in the 90's-2000's, which I played a role in (I created more rigorous test procedures). Pentastar has had it's few small issues over the years, but with over 10 million made, it's proven the test of time. One point - 4V/cyl engines produce more torque than 2V pushrod engines at the same displacement. I "drive what I developed," and own 4 cars with Chrysler engines, including a 3.6L Durango, two 2006 MINI Cooper S' (yes, they have Chrysler engines that I worked on), and an '09 Challenger with a 5.7L (didn't work on that program). I love the smoothness, torque, power and fuel economy of my Durango.

Thanks so much for the comment! I love hearing from the guys who developed and worked on these projects! I had one of the engineers from comp cams drop a comment on one of my 5.7 cam install videos, it’s always great chatting with the guys behind our favourite engines and performance products. Personally I can say I was extremely happy Chrysler came out with the 3.6 when they did, as my 2001 Grand Cherokee had just been put out to pasture, and I wanted a Wrangler but was put off by the 3.8 that was in the earlier JKs. The added power and efficiency the 3.6 brought in was really needed at the time. I very much agree with your point about the number of units produced and the reliability of the production run as a whole. Being a 5.7 guy as well there’s some sentiment out there that the 5.7 isn’t reliable, and that’s just not the case. Same thing with some of the comments about reliability of the 3.6 even in this video, the way some commenters talk you’d think every engine is trouble where by and large the 3.6 is really reliable and it has to be as it’s in almost every platform Dodge makes. Thanks so much for weighing in and for your hard work making the engines we all love to drive, enjoy and modify!

Tell them that I think the head cracking issue is because the cats are too restrictive. I just picked up a used Jeep with this engine from late 2013, so I don't know for sure,----but I bet the cylinder with the problem is the closest to the cat, and this engine likes to rev, (if you want to get to the power of it. Peak HP at red line.). 109k on it. I think I will have the coolant flushed, and the drive train fluids changed,---and gut the cats. :) I could tell right away the engine heats up the water faster than any car I have had,---and then the engine management takes over to not over heat on the gauge. The temp is fine when running. If I am right, (I will be able to tell by the engine temps, even opening the hood after operation), I expect to get many more miles out of it. Now. Please tell me. Where are the darn spark plugs!? :) Doug in Michigan.

I’m from the 80’s and 90’s and 300HP was the goal from a V8 street car. Header intake and Cam could get you there but who had the money and time for all that out of HS. Now in 2010’s and up 300hp from a base model is awesome. I love this era of HP wars. IMO after 400 HP is crazy performance and 500hp and above is way more than you could use safely. Thanks for the review and 300 hp from a drivable v6 is going to be plenty for fun.

I recently was in the market for a Chrysler 300 and have always liked them from the very beginning. I was considering the V6 over the V8 and found several 300’s with the both engines and purposely wanted to drive the V6 first because I wanted to give it a chance.and thought there was no way I was going to like it, I’ve always driven V8’s, I thought it would be underpowered because of the weight of the car. I was so impressed with V6 I bought it and didn’t even test the V8. I say buy what you can afford and not worry about what other people think.

Yes I agree. Years ago with the last generation of the Challenger from 2015 to current I test drove a V6 Challenger, the 5.7 Challenger and the 6.4 Scatpack Challenger. I COULD NOT feel the difference in power or acceleration between the V6 and the 5.7. In that case, I would have bought the V6 over the 5.7. However it's the 6.4 Challenger Scatpack that you can feel the real difference and of course alot more expensive than the smaller engine Challengers at twice the price.

The 3.6 liter Pentistar is a fantastic engine I have it in a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee and my wife's 2012 Journey. The Pentistar really shines with the 8 speed ZF based automatic. I too had a Firebird a 1976 Formula 400 V-8 3 speed automatic that only made 180 HP. We are in the golden age of factory performance cars. I don't know how much longer it will last since the "green police" are pushing 1.4 liter turbos that need to vive red line just to keep up with commuter traffic. BTW I own a 2019 Challenger 5.7 RT 8 speed fantastic car that puts most stock small block muscle cars from the 1960s to shame and gets over 20 mpg if driven conservatively. BTW we owe the existence of the 5.7 and all 3rd generation Hemi V-8s to RAM/Dodge pickup truck owners without them an affordable Hemi based v-8 car would not be economically viable at low volume.
@TrackPackRT
@TrackPackRT 3 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right, the 5.7 has paved the way for the rest of this amazing Hemi crazyness. Without it's success there might not be any Hellcats running around. I still have an 81 Trans Am with a gutless 150 hp 305 in it! We are indeed in the muscle car era right now. I don't think it'll die off though to be honest. I think it'll transform. Electric cars will change things for the better I really believe. If the majority of people have them for their commuters eventually total emissions from cars will be a small fraction of what they used to be and there will be no reason to regulate them into the ground. Also the performance on a lot of them is really quite insane. Got to drive in a Tesla Model S with around 500hp. That thing moves. There's nothing wrong with the Pentastar engine. The problem is that it is poorly matched with the Challenger and Charger. These cars are heavy and the weakness of the Pentastar is its lack of torque. The biggest fault that people find with V6 Challengers and Chargers is that it doesn't quite measure up to its competitors in terms of performance. The Camaro is lighter and has 30 more horsepower than the V6 Mopars. The Ecoboost Mustang as turbos and is responsive when it comes to low and midrange power. Base Camaros and Mustangs are cheaper to mod. V6 Challengers and Chargers aren't mod friendly. You have to pay to either unlock or buy a PCM to tune it. These V6 cars come with an open differential and tall gears. The exhaust manifold is part of the head so you can't install headers. Performance wasn't a priority when FCA decided to put the Pentastar in the Challengers and Chargers. If you want a reliable car that looks nice, is able to get out of its own way, and offers decent fuel economy then a V6 Challenger or Charger might be for you. If you're looking for performance out of a base model car, the Charger and Challenger isn't a great choice.
@TrackPackRT
@TrackPackRT 3 жыл бұрын
I think you're right where Dodge doesn't care too much about who's base model is faster as that's not necessarily the intended purpose of the V6 cars. It's pretty close to the Camaro spec wise, but that ecoboost Mustang has some pretty decent power for an entry level car, lots of torque for a 4 cylinder thanks to to the turbo. As far as Chev and Ford being cheaper to mod, all I can say is welcome to owning a Mopar! That's how it's been since the original muscle car era in the 70's and it's no different now. Parts are way more expensive usually with less availability. I will say that manufacturers are starting to come around, albeit a little late to the game, and that's simply because the Challengers and Chargers are selling so well, and out selling the Camaro consistently. I agree that if performance is your end goal with a Challenger the V6 isn't a logical platform to go for. But if it's all you could budget because you have a family, or you're just starting out after high school and you know you're going to have the car for a long time because that's all that's in the budget in the foreseeable future, you can sneak it into the high 13s with basic mods that won't drastically change the characteristics of the car and that might make it a fair bit more fun to drive for you for the years you do have it.

I feel like that’s lost a lot out there in KZbin land. I mean a Hellcat red eye would be crazy but it’s worth more than I have left owing on my house....it wouldn’t be a smart move. Cheers!

Excellent video content! I've been eyeing the 300 with the 3.6 since I realized I couldn't get AWD with the baby hemi with the 8 speed transmission. I may very well end up with one.....who knows :-)

I encountered a young man with an obviously built Neon. You could tell from the engine note he had something. I drive a 2014 300s with the 3.6. We had a little early morning fun, but after a couple encounters, he won't even try. I can't say anything negative about my 3.6. All the usable power i could ask for and with AWD and sport mode its a blast

Gf who has a scatpack widebody challenger got me to get a 2017 dodge charger sxt Plus(basically regular sxt but with better interior and extra features), and i actually love it a lot, im still getting used to the size of my charger and i feel like it's really wide (previous car was a 2003 avalon), but so far so good, it may be a V6 but for what it is, its a fun daily with enough horsepower to still keep you engaged(300hp)

I own a 2011 Chrysler 300 with the 3.6 engine that I purchased new and must say the engine is excellent, very efficient, very good power and I never have had any issues with it at all. My Chrysler 300 gets about 22 mpg in mixed city type driving and 31-32 mpg highway on long trips. I love my Chrysler! the 3:6 engine runs like a fine watch. And this is coming from someone that used to work as a technician for Ford dealers for more than 20 years.

There was a base Camaro around that time of your Fire bird that made 150hp,---so I didn't buy it. But I went a similar rout with a 2006 V-6 mustang, and put a roots blower on it, (put together by a guy in Ca., retired now.), and I love it. Of course, the exhaust and rear end had to be change, so I put more money into it than I wanted. Being painted now. It went from 210hp to 340hp, or more in cold weather. Pretty much, no matter what engine it is, if you put a blower on it, you make about 60% more power still running pump gas and a inter-cooler.

My wife's 17 Journey, yes Journey snicker snicker, I get it, we needed the third row seat, continues to impress me even after 50K miles. The tune on the 6 speed auto leaves something to be desired but in manual mode it moves out pretty damn good for a big ole Mom car. I also just got my JLU Wrangler manual that I ordered in Jan, the engine/tranny choice was the was the only thing I didn't change repeatedly on the build site before I pulled the trigger. Granted I only have 1,500 miles on it so far but I absolutely love the drivetrain.

Got a 23 Wrangler JL Sport with the 3.6 with the 6MT (from what I've read it's also called the PUG, Pentastar upgrade, being the 3 rd gen. Very happy with this little SUV. Def had get up and go, had first oil change at 1500 miles and very fun to wind up through THE GEARS. this thing is pretty quick. Just got an ace muffler delete, and was not expecting anything worth writing home about, just louder really, but it's got a nice rumble to it now, and with it being a manual I can get some nice pops in the exhaust 😎

I was happy with the old 3.9 V6 in my 98 Dakota Sport back in the day. Had a 5 speed manual transmission and that 3.9 V6 provided plenty of power to that manual transmission. I kept it for 11 years before finally selling it. Still wish that I hadn't sold it. I am currently driving a regular cab 2005 Daytona edition Ram 1500 with the 5.7 (Go Mango Orange) that I bought used in 2007 with 24k miles on it at the time. Have 214k miles on it now.

@@mlaugh3 it is, but he told a story about buying an older generation V6, and how much he liked it. So I shared a similar story. I agree with him. Nothing wrong with a V6. Even older ones.
