Hey Omni Rider, I stumbled on your video through my recommendations and I'm so glad I did. As a 19-year-old sophomore in college, this video really helped me get my priorities straight. To me owning a Golf R has always been what I wanted at my age however after hearing your talk about finances I come to realize I should just be thankful I am able to comfortably finance my '14 tC and not have a huge debt on college. I think you switching to a GTI was a great move and similarly, I am now less focused on "appearing rich" and focusing on being financially better off. Lastly, GTI's are awesome too I plan on either saving up for one of those after my graduation or an R. Either way, glad to see you yourself are doing well and cant wait to see what you do to this GTI!

That's about the same time as a rear wheel drive car with 4-500hp horsepower. Or some heavier cars like amg's with close to 600hp. It's not happening. You buy a gti for different reasons. Well there are the stand outs. I worked with a kid from day one at my high school job. He was a good friend at work but never came and hung out or went to movies with us or anything. I always assumed he had a strict mom till the day he showed up our senior summer after high school with a brand new Mazda 3 sport. I was jealous even though I had. A brand new Dodge Ram, after I got the truck I had started to wish I had a car. Then he proudly showed a few of us close friends his paper work. Instead of going out with use the past 3 years he saved every dime of all of his checks, worked extra shifts when possible and paid cash for the car. I know he really did because I knew what I had made since starting and recently had a similar conversation with my grandfather about this stuff. He had asked how much I had saved while working and I told him nothing and he sat down and asked what I had made. I’ll admit to this day the only times in my life I’ve been able to save any sort of money is when I had a really good job and was still able to save and go do fun things. But anytime I make decent money I’ve always chosen to take small trips and enjoy the money now rather than later, and do realise its not the most fiscal thing to do, but I’ve got a lot and I mean a lot of fond memories of vacations for 2 days with my friends that to me are worth a new car

Congrats! If your goal is to save money, you should consider buying used next time so you don't have to eat the depreciation. For example, I got my 2017 GTI Autobahn with 10k miles for 24k. The sticker price was 36k. Also, if you want to save money, don't get married. And finally, buying a house doesn't mean it's yours or you can call it your own. You're getting into debt for 30 years and paying interest. If you buy a house for 300k over 30 years at 4%, the total cost would be $515,609. You'll be paying $215,609 to the bank in interest, the bank that can evict you at anytime during the 30 years if you miss a couple payments. Oh yeah, don't forget about home maintenance homeowners insurance and taxes! If your "financial adviser" is advising you to get into debt over a home, you may want to reconsider your financial adviser.

Just my advice. Do not tune the GTI. I ran into major issues as well as others. I have since sold it and am purchasing an NA 370Z. I loved my GTI to death btw. Waxed it every 2 weeks. The turbos and rods are the weak points. Trust me on this.

I just bought a 2021 GTI SE manual for my fun car. I used to have 2004 Corvette C5 automatic that I just got tired of and knew needed a lot of work. I sold it to my neighbor. The GTI is just as fun despite being slower, but it feels like it handles so much better. The ride is also SO MUCH better. It's practical too. Most importantly, I'm the first owner. I love it and don't regret it. It's an entirely different car that has a new place in my heart.

I ended up selling my very clean 600whp LSA swapped 2005 GTO that i babied and really enjoyed. I was in the same boat as you, thinking i needed something more practical, something that provided more value for my money. I ended up deciding on a GTI just like you, although i got real lucky and i found an APR Stage 2 Golf R 2016 for the same price as the GTI i was looking at. Great video, and explanation.
@mitchellblu36 жыл бұрын
As a fellow GTI owner I Highly recommend checking out even a stage 1 ECU tune. It completely transforms the car into a whole nother animal. If you have a DSG specced one you'll need the DSG tune to go with. A standard will require a clutch upgrade as the torque figures have massive gains even on stage 1 alone. I went with APR stage 1 and i'm never going to go back to stock. I've put on about 20k miles since the tune and no issues so far.

First, the most cost effective thing to do is purchase (not lease) a dependable car, pay it off, and then drive it without payments. Ownership should be at least 6 years, but hopefully greater than 10. Now matter what savings Mr. Rider gets in insurance and gas by trading, selling early wipes out those savings before they even accrue. Second, high powered motorcycles are extremely gratifying death machines that are wise to avoid. Third, Camaros are good, GTIs are better. Forth, I figured Mr. Rider was going to compare vehicles but instead it came down to his personal struggles and his fear of how others perceive him.

What awesome advise on life! I'm 43 and made very similar decisions about financial priorities in life at your age. You are on the right path for a happy and successful life. I love cars too, but what I really love now is knowing that I can buy any car made, and pay cash if I wanted. That though is more satisfying then actually buying a $250,000 vehicle.
@dylondylondylondylondylon56 жыл бұрын
Great video! I’m in a similar position being 23 and an engineer. I did the same thing and went out at started a lease on a S3 at 21. I’m now thinking about downgrading to a gti as I get closer to the end of my lease. Luckily I can comfortably make my car payments but my mindset has shifted. Financial freedom is the real dream. I love cars too but it’s all about balance.
