I totally understand. I live in the states and when I moved away from my barber I went through three barbers and eventually gave up and just grew locs.

My barber now is Vietnamese, he does a great job, edge ups, fades etc. Where I live is super diverse so I don’t ever worry, but I really appreciate you two for helping me out.

Cedi, ever thought of starting a resource blog/website for folks of color in Korea. You could travel and use the footage for your channel. Yes, I know it would cost money though!

Cedric, I just recently moved to Korea 6 days ago (with the EPIK program) and this is something that I've always wondered too. Before leaving the States, I actually cut quite a bit of length off in anticipation of not finding a barbershop that can cut my texture of hair. I'm rocking a 3C-type, something similar to yours, actually! Unfortunatley for me, I'm placed in Iksan in Jeonju...a rural placement. I'm going to be looking a little funny for the first few months, so I might just grow my hair out or just stick to a shorter cut. Pray for me and my follicles...

I feel ya man. But consider this tip from a brotha in a rural town in Korea. If you try to cut your own hair and you mess it up, you can always lie to the students and say that's it's a new haircut style in America.

Great video! This was my concern about moving/living in Korea long term. I knew I'd probably have to ship my curly hair products in since there are most likely no black/mixed haircare shops. I get Cedi's POV though, black barbershops are a rite of passage & I've had my share of salon memories. Speaking of, I'm curious to know if Cedi has any hair horror stories? Growing up with mixed curls, I struggled to accept at first, so I did the whole straightening ("fried, dyed & layed to the side"), jheri curl and texturizing thing at different stages of my life. Now I love my hair & have been rocking my natural curls for almost 2 decades. I know Becky had a perm back in the day (& some Koreans perm their hair) so I was wondering if Cedi had any similar hair journey stories like that. Love you guys! Stay safe :-)

My oldest son and youngest sons cut they own hair they have clippers I’ve seen them do it I even wanted my oldest child to cut the nape of my neck due to timing my husband shaved it for me he cuts his own hair himself.

Do you have access to military bases, outside or inside? Surely the barbers there know how to cut Black hair or Black hairstyles given the traffic they likely get. I also cut my own hair here in Japan, so I certainly understand how you feel. I'm not going to pay $20+ for someone to mess it up...I did that once already, and I'm not going to do it again, lol.
@skycedi3 жыл бұрын
haha I hear you! And we don't have access to the military bases here, at least to go inside without someone signing us in. I'd imagine there might be a barber shop or two right outside of the base, but it's like an hour or more away from where I live lol

Lol i haven’t seen my barber for over a year. But I do cut the sides myself 🤣… took a while to get the hang of it. My front hair can reach my chin now Lolol

Ok Cedric I love when you morph into your “smooth black bro” vibe! Yes our hair is not African hair and not ,well, whatever you might be mixed with hair - it’s its own thing 😂. The funniest thing is that it’s just hair - even if you mess it up it grows back. 😂 I haven’t been to a stylist in a really long time. I never found one I liked so I gave up trying a long time ago. I don’t know what happened but I literally don’t care anymore - I think I listened to India Arie ‘you are not your hair’ a little too much 😂. I just wash it and let it dry. Ppl seem to like my hair - they always want to touch it. One Chinese girl was so curious she just started touching it and going wow do you have a perm? No, no perm needed just naturally curly.

There is no one type of black hair. I am African American, and even in my own family, we range from bone straight to curly to kinky and to a range of colors within those. Black is beautiful and varied.

@peggyroyster37593 жыл бұрын
Just need to specifically let Becky know. Maybe you don't know this or perhaps don't understand all black hair texture is NOT the same. Black hair have a different type of curl pattern the hair can be a tighter curl or looser curl Black hair comes in all textures and it do not necessarily mean for the curl to be looser or some what straighter that you are bi- racial.

Cedric, I understand your hesitancy about the barber COMPLETELY. Many, MANY years ago I had a horrendous experience with an Italian beautician who literally BURNED my hair off by using a blowdryer set to the highest setting. She only made 2 or 3 passes with the blowdryer. But even in that small amount of time, when I looked up my naturally jet black hair was GLOWING a light, burnished red-brown. Not only did it straighten *all* the natural curl out of my hair - immediately everywhere the blowdryer was aimed, the hair fell out in clumps. I looked like a chocolate Raggedy Ann doll whose hair had been savaged by the family dog. The beautician was shocked. She thought that because my hair was curly that it would be tough like a steel wool scouring pad. Fortunately, the heat did not penetrate all the way down to the scalp. Still, it took a solid year to regrow my hair, and a few months beyond that to repair the damage. I am glad that your encounter with the Korean barber was a much better experience.

I cut my own hair also. I have a short fade, so I can cut it once a week and be fine. I would be nervous about letting a Korean barber cut my hair again because I had a friend who was learning and practiced on me. Let's just say that didn't go so well.
