@@SL-pg4dh maybe the bandwidth required needs more accuracy and information. i think a 480i is going to need almost 10x what a modern 1080p signal is going to. as well, digital is kind of picky, and needs most if not all of the information in the signal, where with analogue you could probably just have some interference and deal with it.

Very good demo! I use my old "analog" (ha ha) uhf antenna. It has 7 elements with a corner reflector. I think it is a Winegard. I used to sell these at the small independent electronics parts store (remember those?) where I worked for 34 years. My feedline is RG6, about 20 feet. Just went through the repack. I did well. I checked the FCC database and it appears that their CP listed transmitters were higher power. That is good as some of my channels were marginal. Now the stations come in well, even with the summer leaves. I live north of Corning, NY. Kind of like your area.

Have you ever experimented with the beer can antenna? No joke. Recommended in Europe for the DVB-T signals (Europe's version of ATSC) and it works. Solder the wire inside the antenna cable to the top beer can and the shielding to the bottom can. Now you have a perfect antenna for DVB-T. Beer cans are the best as long as they are magnetic (as in a magnet should stick to them). The dimensions of the beer can are perfect for the frequencies they receive. It also fits perfectly in a plastic drain pipe, to protect it from the elements. Obviously the first step in making a beer can antenna is drinking the beer.

You can also use a copper(best) or stainless steel(second best) and strip part of the cable down and wrap it around the metal(*be sure to tie strap it, copper from the cable needs touch all way around) and it works similar to a Diploe style antenna.

The indoor antenna is very useful in two condition, either you live very close to a broadcasting tower or if you have a portable TV and you wan't to watch TV outside (let's say in the garden, or garage) . In my case an indoor antenna only works outside. I could receive all the digital channels with both passive and active one. Inside I don't have signal at all. I would recommend if you live in flats let's say first floor or second etc. but still don't know if it works or not. I recommend to all the people who don't wan't cable or satellite TV to buy a high gain Yagi antenna (VHF+UHF) and an active splitter (to connect to two or more TVs without signal loss), with the passive splitter you will loose signal strength and quality, or an Outdoor amplified antenna if they live in rural areas.

Your video is very good with the antenna inside and out of the house. Before seeing these videos of yours, I had purchased an amplified antenna similar to your Onn antenna that I believe you had said in your video not to purchase because they are cheap and don't last long. Well, I installed my antenna in the attic above the garage. I had planned to put it outside on the old DirecTV pole but it was too big in diameter so I purchased a mounting pole and put it the attic. It so far is working well but I don't receive the weaker stations in my area like NBC and CBS. They are just too far away. I also have a spare because when I first hooked it up, I only had the cable connections finger tight and it did not work and the company sent me another antenna. Then I discovered all I had to do was tighten the connections with a wrench and it worked. I get my regular stations in perfectly with the new antenna, sometimes PBS as well. I guess I may look at outside antenna again if you think I would be able to get my weak stations to come in.

hmmm. must be nice to live an a place that you can use an outdoor antenna. but many others, myself included, don't have that kind of luxery. the easiest thing for a lot of people is to use an indoor antenna. so to write them off entirely because "the outdoor antenna gets more coverage" is silly. we aren't trying to spend over $100 for free TV.

I am not writing them off I am simply stating the facts. I do not want people to spend hundreds on different indoor antenna models just to see that they can't get all the channels. All your advice indicates a thorough knowledge of RF. You must be a ham. The antenna and the window demo was excellent. I think you forgot to take into account the fact that your outdoor antenna was without a preamp. Right? Do many of the outdoor antennas come with an amp? It is particularly of value if you have a long lead-in to the TV set. If the antenna amplifier was low enough noise a 20 dB loss through a wall will still work. I have several ham antennas that are obviously outside, but I found my TV antenna to the outside to be hard to do and the indoor one I bought with an amplifier did work where the only thing in the way was a wood garage door. (1/2" thick maybe.) In north Orange County only channels 7 through 11 are hard to pick up. The passive indoor could not get it, but the amplified one did. Excellent service you are doing for all of us. Thanks.

I haven't tried all indoor antennas, but I have tried many, and I found the ClearStream 2Max works the best, indoors, that i have tried. It was so long ago I can't remember, but I'm pretty sure I tried the 2Max because of Tyler's recommendation. I bought the 4Max and it works a little bit better than 2Max, but like Tyler says my main problem is the walls in my apartment. I live about 22 miles north of the tv broadcasting towers or whatever they are called. I have hills and trees in the way too. I can get in all the tv channels I want (8 tv stations) just not at the same time. I have to move the antenna, a little, to get in PBS, but when I do that it causes another channel I watch to not come in. Not a big deal since I save $50-$100 a month not having to subsidize 30 or hundreds of channels I don't watch to just to watch 3 channels: ESPN, PAC12, FS1. I have the Internet so I just go to the PBS app on my Roku if there is anything I want to watch on PBS. I usually breakdown and subscribe to Sling TV in late September to watch Pac12 games and then cancel after The College Football National Championship game is played in early Jan. I just did this recently.

Hi Tyler Could you please comment on how incremental improvement in signal strength affects picture quality. If a signal is registering a 75 would an increase to that signal to lets say 85 affect the quality of the image on the TV. Thanks
@AntennaMan5 жыл бұрын
The picture quality is the same at a 50% or 100% signal due to error correction. It's not like streaming a video online. It's either you have a clear watchable signal or nothing.

Antenna man, hoping you can help. I’m in Port Huron Michigan and have an OLD school antenna about 32 feet high. I just hooked it up and only got ONE channel (29) out of Canada. But I can’t get any locals from Detroit 43 miles away when I point the antenna in the proper direction. Two concerns: 1. I have a huge tree in between my antenna and Detroit. 2. There is old G59 cable running from antenna to tv about 50 foot run or so. I keep turning antenna and rescanning, but no matter where I point it I just get that one Channel 29. Any thoughts, suggestions? I really want to use this antenna but also don’t want to put a ladder 32 feet high to change anything.

Actually my Zip Code is 48079, so I should be getting about 27 channels according to antennaweb. I’m new to cutting the cord and fairly lost already.

Replace the RG59 cable with an RG6 cable and add a preamp. That will likely boost your signal. You can find both on my Amazon store: www.amazon.com/shop/antennaman

@@ru932 I'm not sure if this helps or not, but I had an older UHF antenna that my dad and I installed on the roof in Lansing. All I could get with it was the Lansing locals. In looking at the list on TV fool, I was supposed to get at least Fox 66 out of Flint as well. In the old Analog days I could get 12 out of Flint as well. I tried that Clearstream 2 max indoors first and got all locals as well as Fox 66. I then replaced the old antenna on my roof with it. In addition to 66 and 12 I also got 25 and sometimes 46, which is at the 56 mile mark. I then added the distribution amp and FM trap up on the pole, I'm now getting all Lansing, and channel 46 all the time now. I still have some difficulties with my Channel 43 even though it is in the green area. Which I think could be they are low power as they are in the next FCC repack. I do notice that if I scan at night I can sometimes bring in distant channels, or first thing in the morning. I can often get fox 17 out of Grand Rapids and WNEM 5 out of Bay City. WNEM is coming from the rear of the Clearstream 2 max, and through my big silver maple tree. This weekend I got channel 7 and 56 out of Detroit for a little while scanning in the morning and the antenna is not even pointed southeast from me. So you might need the Amplifier, some RG6 and a newer antenna.

I'm up in Southern Ontario, Canada. I'm reading a lot of American response's about the HOA. Could some one tell me what this is? I know it stands for Home Owners Association. I do not know there power or authority. Are Home Owners paying a Union Dues or a Due to belong to it? So it's a group of home owners that pay a Union Due or a Due to hold certain home standards. Usually, the local City Hall sets the standards or bylaws set for this. So I do not know why you need a HOA? Anyway the city which I live, Brantford, Ontario, I checked with City Hall reguarding antennas and towers. They say it's wide open here, no restrictions in this area. Want a tripod on the roof with a rotor and large vhf/uhf yagi antenna go for it. Want a 64 foot tower on your lot go for it. (a Home Owner five houses away from me has five towers of different tower heights for tv and ham radio. Those ham yagis are big. So I do not know what the problem is in not having a outside antenna? Just check with City Hall for your local bylaw standards. I know mine here, have installed towers, roof tripods and gable end mounts. Personally like towers the best, they are safe to climb, provides a safe place to mount the antenna up high. Which is the best thing to do for the maximum number of tv stations. The indoor antenna junk may work for people in large cities close to broadcast towers. But most of my stations are 70, 80, 30, 50 & 6 miles away. Need the tower to get clear vision of the horizon to pull them in.ii

To start simply, if the grass and flowers and sign at the entrance to a community are managed and paid for by other than the homeowner then that is the Homeowner's Association (HOA). Getting past what is simple, the HOA usually has authorities to perpetuate how the community looks (to maintain and improve property values). For example, the HOA can create a pallet of allowed colors for exteriors (and those become the only allowed exterior colors). The HOA can restrict/ ban homeowners hanging their wash outside to dry. The HOA can force any exterior holiday decorations to removed by January 7th (or 15th or whatever). They can define what a work truck is and restrict where a work truck can be parked (or exclude all together).
@diycarhome91512 жыл бұрын
@@mikereece1885 Ok read your type, but those houses in the city belonging to a HOA pay a property tax to the city. City would have bylaws making no need of a HOA.

Back when I was a kid, we didn't have cable or an outdoor antenna. Just rabbit ears and eventually UHF loops. We were able to watch TV all the time, and even get some channels from another state, albeit with some snow. And we lived in a gully! Has the switch to digital messed up TV broadcasts THAT badly?
@eosjoe5655 жыл бұрын
Same here. Those little rabbit ears with UHF loops were very well made too. Good metal throughout and a nice heavy base. If I recall, I think ours used twin lead feed line and not the silly 0.090" diameter coax on the junk they sell now.

Old tv's had coil wires on back covering of tv's. It was a antenna and it picked up more channels than rabbit ears. I think atcs 3.0 will be better and tv signal will be stronger like analog.

@@kimberlyespinoza280 Yes I remember those! ATSC 3.0 may solve the reception issues but also has the potential to kill free over-the-air TV. It's internet based so there's nothing stopping a channel from requiring a subscription just like when you try to watch certain NBC programs online.
@genesky615 жыл бұрын
Truth and Quality. Practical and Useful Information. The current ATSC 1.0 standard is Ok but not great. Know this , there are No transmission and reception methods that are 100% perfect. ATSC 3.0 is being licensed by the FCC Federal Communications Commission now and will be phased in. ATSC 3.0 is a transmission and reception method ( and variants ) that rest of World uses and will greatly improve transmission and reception. And ATSC 3.0 is compatible with the internet and more.

Multi-directional that work best and don't have to spend more than $100 ? but don't mind more, if really is a BOOM Awesome antenna that'll last and have best reception.... oh, is comparing the db rating a basic way to know which one will give the best reception or can a higher db model have poorer reception than a lower db rated model ? (assuming they're not lying about their db gain rating).. and they hardly mention if dbi or dbd ... so, ? ? is the codstream that has 4 circular things on it really worth the $200 Cdn dollar ?
