Another Fun Fact: Arvedui, the last King of Arthedain was married to Fíriel, the daughter of King Ondoher of Gondor and so they united the lines of Isildur and Anárion, which makes Aragorn a descendant of Anárion as well
@ShakaarGaleed
@ShakaarGaleed Жыл бұрын
This is why he's King of both Arnor and Gondor.
@TheMasonK
@TheMasonK Жыл бұрын
@@ShakaarGaleed technically no. Aragorn didn’t need a line to Anarion. Isildur after Anarion and Elendil died inherited both kingdoms as high King. Obviously he died suddenly there after so the rule of the realms fell to his son and Anarion’s son but technically the line of Isildur would always have a claim on Gondor if Anarion’s line were to die out (which it did). That is why Aragorn’s ancestor did have a claim to the throne of Gondor as well after the defeat of the Witch King but was passed over by the people of Gondor who saw the ruin that had been brought upon Arnor.
@natedorney7032

Isildur and Anarion shared the rule of Gondor between them initially. Following the deaths of Elendil and Anarion during the war of the last alliance, Anarion's son Mineldil was entrusted with the rule of Gondor. While Isildur determined to assume his father's position as High King in Arnor. Therefore the realms were sundered until the time of Arvedui. But the nobles of Gondor chose Earnil rather than acknowledge Arvedui's claim. With the death of the last king of the southern realm, the claim to the rule of both realms fell to those of the northern line which made Aragorn II the thirtieth and ninth heir in the correct line.@@TheMasonK

You could have actually talked about how Anarion took command of the Gondorian army after Isildur fled north to warn their father. Anarion fought for 3 years before joining the last alliance on the assault of barad dur. He was killed by a stone flung from the battlements. Crushing the original crown-helm of gondor That speculation trying to mix Denethor with anarion probably should have been cut to actually tell Anarion's story.

In _Unfinished Tales_ Meneldil is described as being pleased when Isildur and his sons left for Arnor and that he hoped they would long be preoccupied in the north. Sounds like he was thinking of autonomy from the start.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Anarion is not seen, but lives separately from Elendil, Isildur, and Earien, on Numenor's west coast, where he endeavors to further the cause of the Faithful, while his family initially seeks to make a separate future for themselves. In The Lord of the Rings Online, Anarion appears in an extended flasback set during the Siege of Barad-dur in the year S.A. 3440, shortly before his death.

Second sons of kings often get the short end in Tolkien's mythos, sad as it is to say. Same thing happened to Frerin, Thorin's younger brother, who was killed in the Battle of Azanulbizar. Of course, he doesn't have quite the history Anarion does.

Think Anarion is forgotten for the fa t that his achievements are not only lesser than those of his father and brother. But also he is effectively the faramir of the bunch, a dutiful and skilled soldier who does his duty to his family and kingdom and dies for it. Although he should be remembered for being founder of Gondor ruling dynasty and whom prevented it from being overrun by Sauron before war of last alliance really got started and defeated him.

Which realm was put down by the Witch King and which one held the same Witch King at bay for 25 generations? I never could figure out why Isildur's line keeps being given all the glory, no matter how you look at it his kingdom went down in flames. TBF the lines were re-merged through Arvedui and Ondoher's daughter (name not coming to me right now) so Aragorn is descended through both and he's the last one left standing either way.

Isildur was co-king ond founder of Gondor with his brother Anarion. Isildur recived High kingship and set Melendil as king of Gondor, but High King was over king of Gondor. Once Isildur died and Valandil was very young, Melendil seperated Gondor from Arnor. There was no glory or rivaly between Isildur and Anarion. If Elendur (son of Isildur) bevame High king, there would be no polotical division.

Arnor had it worse from the start. First of all the country was always less fertile and populated than Gondor and keep also in mind that the Arnorian forces took way more casualties than Gondor in the War of the Last Alliance and a huge part of Arnorian nobility was killed of at the Gladden Fields

Anarion is a pretty much a blank slate with a few clues as to his nature. He was left in charge of the defending armies in Gondor while Isildur left to raise more troops in the southern provinces, failing spectacularly with those men at the Stone of Erech. Anarion also stayed behind when Isildur went north to join Elendil in the north to form the Last Alliance. So his prowess at command must have been exceptional, maybe exceeding his brother? Lastly an insight into his character MAY come from the glimpse we have of his son, Meneldil. Mendocino was quite anxious for Isildur to finally leave for the northern throne. Indeed he was pleased when his uncle finally took his leave. An attitude handed down from his father Anarion, his mother or developed on his own? My guess is those in the southern armies held Anarion in higher regard than Isildur.

It might also have to do with the fact that he didn't really do much of note; being the Don of a king, even one as renowned and pivotal as Elendil, isn't enough to be remembered thousands of years later. There might very well be Elves who remember him as living Man, such as Elrond, but to Men, with their short lives, and exaggerated historical memory, he's only his accomplishments, and these were few. Elendil led his people from the apocalypse, and Isildur stole various relics from the doomed island, at great personal risk. Elendil killed the Dark Lord, and Isildur survived that battle, even if his greatness was then stunted by his choice to let evil endure. Ro his credit Anarion didn't do anything bad; he wasn't the jealous, conniving younger brother, but neither do they tell great stories about the Orc generals he slew, the passes he held, or anything else of renown; he simply was there, he did his part, and he died. In the immediate aftermath, I'm sure it was big, but then bigger things continued to happen, and he was eclipsed. It's kind of funny because sometimes being the lesser son also has its perks; you are more likely to have the freedom to choose your own destiny, if leadership isn't that dream. I wrote a story, in part, where the main character is the fourth son of a strict Duke. The first son obviously needs to inherit, so he's trained for that. The second is shaped to marry sideways, adding wealth to the family, and ibcreadibg their merchant-prestige. The third had to make his place in the military, and was expected to work his way up so they would have a supportive ear, and possibly voice odmf decision making, later on, and that left the fourth. Honestly, he wasn't really intended, and his father left him to his own devices. He wouldn't likely just get to love off the family, so he wanted to come up qith something, and he chose magic; he'd become a wizard, and serve his family's interests with divination, and protection. Father wasn't stoked because a wizard could use magic to dominate others, and he knew that's what he would have done, so he takes precautions...yada yada yada, sometimes it is nice to be not so important that you get to decide things for yourself. 😊

You incorrectly said ''Isildur appointed Anarion's son Meneldil as the HIGH king of Gondor'' at 15:25. He was named 'King of Gondor', not 'High King of Gondor' - High King meant 'King even over the King of the other land' ie. Isildur was King of Arnor AND High King of both.
