In Brazil, people show off their iPhone in their Tinder profile -- it's a status symbol. Meanwhile, it can be cheaper to fly to Miami to buy a MacBook Pro than buy one in Brazil!
So why is Apple so expensive in Brazil? Here are 3 reasons why.

Very well done! Robbers in Brazil will target iPhones specifically. I used to work at a custody court here in Recife, a Brazilian capital city, and we used to deal with many cases of robbers specifically asking for iPhones from people in restaurants in the touristic area of the city. Once the police found a bag full of Android phones thrown over the roof of a gas station and we were able to give all of them back to their owners. I myself used to have an iPhone 7 and I got robbed at gunpoint in 2018 and ever since I gave up buying iPhones completely and I now prefer Galaxy S series. They’re premium, cheaper and don’t get you in danger.

Uptin, I lived in Argentina for over 12 years and doing a quick comparison with Brazil there are two constants. First, in the last decade or so many Argentines would go the US and do the exact same thing: flock to US and buy an iPhone, Mac, you name it. Some would even buy in bulk to then resell once they've returned on MercadoLibre (South America's eBay). Second, the Peso is so worthless (you've already shown us this, and it's never-ending) with respect to the US Dollar. The only difference is that there's no such thing as an Apple store in the country (maybe an authorized reseller but no official store), most likely the costs to set up shop (especially the factors you've noticed) would be exorbitant

Hi, I'm Brazilian and I'll explain quickly, it's not because of taxes! This exorbitant price is because Apple knows that Brazilians will pay the price they set, it's super common to see poor people doing everything to buy an iPhone for an absurd price, which leads apple to think that way "WOW, if This fucked up country buys at the price I put, why should I lower the price even when the dollar is low?" All Androids and formerly the best Windows Phones had normal prices and were manufactured in Brazil as well as the iPhone 13 line is also manufactured in Brazil but they will never lower the price knowing that there is a muggle that pays that fucking price.

The same goes for newer devices, a 256gb Galaxy S22 can be had about 890 USD, the same price as a 64gb iPhone 12 or 128gb iPhone 11. Exactly! Apple's popularity is decreasing in Europe and Latin America cuz it's very expensive for what we earn (and I live in a european country with low inflation rates!). Xiaomi and Samsung are adapting to this but Apple isn't. I guess they prefer to keep their high status... And the quality between an iPhone and a Samsung or a Xiaomi smartphone is not very different (and it's more than half of the price). If Apple wants to keep their high status worldwide, it needs to adapt. And they are suffering, they even created a more "affordable" model named iPhone XS (to increase sales) and it's still very expensive for what we get! If they want to be competitive in the european market, they need to change their tactic. Until that, most of the people are going to buy Xiaomi or Samsung products instead of Apple products.

I don't agree it is about logistics or infrastructure, this is just how apple does things. It charges 999 for an iPhone in the US, and that is about the only you'll buy an iPhone for that price. In most other countries iPhone is going to cost much more. For example, a lot of countries in the EU have even better infrastructure than US, and it is safer and cheaper to get those iPhones to stores in these countries, yet Apple still charges 50, 60, 70 % more for its products. I believe that is the main reason why apple products aren't as popular outside of the US as they are in the US. For the record: I am from Bosnia and Herzegovina (Balkans) and a 999$ iPhone from the US costs about 1500$ here.

Us prices are always without taxes so it isn’t really much cheaper in the us than in most European countries only the lower taxes make iPhones slightly cheaper for example New York has a 8.875% tax and Germany has 19% only in 3rd world countries the prices are much more expensive in most cases just because of greedy governments
