I completely disagree. The armour formula is convoluted and unintuitive. There is nothing in the game that actually explains the armour formula, you are given a percentage and that's it. That percentage isn't even remotely accurate towards what your armour is doing. Additionally, your armour should be protecting you from big hits. There's no reason a character that trades damage for armour should be getting one shot by a physical attack, ever. Especially when wearing heavy armours decreases your movement speed and therefore your capability to dodge those slow and heavy hits. I can't be the only one that watched temporalis blink builds and asked myself why there aren't more abilities in the game that allow you to reposition. If there's no readily available movement abilities, then defenses should be more effective at mitigating damage. I think that's fair.

Okay, so as a relatively new player (a bit under 5k hours played), this is the logic I find in both PoE 1 and 2: 1. I want to play an evasion character? I stack evasion and pick up an evasion keystone (Acrobatics / Phase acrobatics). 2. I want to play an energy shield character? I stack energy shield and pick up an energy shield keystone (Chaos Inoculation). 3. I want to play an armor character? I use 3 specific uniques, look for 5 specific item mods, use endurance charges, fortify, and one ascendancy of one class, oh and 2 or 3 keystones. So...why must armor be so much more complicated? I sincerely do NOT understand.

First of all, I belive Ziz's point here was about armour specificaly, and it is intended to protect against small hits. For huge hits you should use either ES (for more hp, but it works a little too well now) or evasion (which is a problem with real big his - slams - look for my comment here about it). Second, as Ziz said, that is what dodge roll is for in this game. It is your way of getting away from big hits, and for it to make sence in the first place you should not be able to tank them all with your face. Now, it does not mean that I justify going full dps. I belive defences (including life, block and even ms in that regard) are meant to protect you from dying while mapping and give you some chance for mistake while bossing. And that is where difference between defences should be: armour is for small hits, evasion/block for bigger ones, ES is more versatile but should be worse than armour and evasion in respective situations. And MS, well, it makes your life easier overall, but also makes is easier to get away from AoE hits in the first place (including dodge roll as part of MS).

And then you can balance it by making big ele hits also be reduced less, that way you could kinda balance all the damage numbers the same... but it would overcomplicate the game... The other one is ro remove armod and replace it with "phys defense %", just like resist... but that would oversimplify it... Pure armor for your gloves helmet boots and pure evasion chest. Take the unique helmet that doubles attribute requirements. On the skill tree, take the node that stacks the strengths attribute requirement of each of those items as flat armor. Then take the node that convert 8% of armor to evasion. You also grab the node that doubles the evasion of your chest. And there is an armor to fire conversion for 20% next to the attribute to armor node, which is huge. Hot take: Remove "damage taken as X" and change how armor works in general. It's not that I want less depth to defensives, but I don't think it's possible to make it balanced where someone would ever NOT want to take it unless it's incredibly restrictive or just bad. And it just adds to the confusion of how armor works and how armor gets better because you have "phys taken as elemental", which if you think about it sounds super dumb. My armor, which only works on physical damage, gets more effective if I remove some of that physical damage? For seasoned players this is obvious, but even for players who are not even new but just casual this is not obvious at all and makes literally no sense. It feels very shoe-horned in and is in my opinion not really interesting outside of niche endgame stuff like Divine Flesh shenanigans.

Armor isn't a problem by itself, just a symptom of a larger problem which is GGG's raging insatiable hatred for melee in all forms. They refuse to give melee builds the tools they need to be competitive with ranged/magic, and when they do it always comes with a caveat or loophole that lets ranged/magic abuse those same tools even better (which gets them nerfed). Look at any boss in the game and invariably most of them have the "spawn a fart cloud and stand in it so you take huge DoT if you try to melee me but get free DPS uptime if you are ranged" mechanic. It's not a problem you can fix by shuffling numbers around, and it's barely a problem that players can fix with specific gearing choices - because GGG will just see those choices as overused and dumpster them.

This seems to be such a major oversight (or bias) since you cant normally get that much life, it doesnt answer the question how does a life build survive elemental/chaos damage and very importantly it doesnt answer the issue with you being unable to spec into more life based defense on the tree. POE1 has that option, POE2 has that option for ES but not for life.

Here's the issue. After about 15-20 hours, dodge rolling everything that can potentially oneshot... it just sucks, it's tiresome, boring. In dark souls it's fine because the game is finite. No ones going to spend 1000 hours playing that game, probably not even 30 hours. In this game there should be a point where you can "beat it" if you want to build that way, and be able to tank all but a handful of things, like in PoE1. 1 shots are literally the worst thing in AARPGs, and for whatever reason GGG decided to increase 1-shots 1000 fold. Instead of the PoE experience of getting 1-shot maybe once a week, it's now almost a daily occurrence for anyone not stacking energy shield). Even the smallest little shitty mob can take you by surprise and crit you for a 5k auto attack, in certain circumstances depending on the mods they roll.

The most important thing is that the defenses aren't anywhere close to equal in the things they mitigate. Armor only protects against small physical hits. Evasion works on all non-slam hits similar to block. However ES protects against all damage your character takes. Meaning that an ES character can raise all of their maximum hits taken by simply investing into a single stat. ES also protects against damage over time (that doesn't ignore ES). You also need to invest way more points to even get a reasonable amount of armor then just grabbing a few of the big ES nodes. Also with effectively no life on the passive tree armor characters lose an entire additional way to increase their max hit taken except by stacking strength. I checked the armor chart and even if you tripled everyone's armor they would still have less physical max hits than ES builds (based on some math and assuming around 10k ES). Armor is effectively worthless on the current patch. That is not even mentioning that "Armor shouldn't protect against slams" is weird because ES does, evasion builds can take acrobatics, and block builds can use the ascendancy notable. Armor becomes worse and worse the more difficult the content you are doing gets because it's the only defense that gets weaker the larger the hit you are taking is. I am hoping for a big armor rework/buff instead of a major ES nerf across the board. (I just felt like ranting I don't actually expect anyone to read this)

Yeah I'm sorry ziz I really disagree with you. PoE 2 with armor + melee + item rarity + energy shield are simply making this game a nightmare. Also if having enough energy shield let's you face tank slams, having high evasion let's you rng face tank slams, armor should to some capacity also allow you to face tank the slams. Having dodge rolls as the only way to face slams is RIDICULOUS. Not to mention the crafting in this game is considerably worse than poe1 and extremely bare bones. Also there is ZERO quality of life for builds, and there is too much visual clutter in the game that needs to be lowered in some way, like a slider in options menu or something. The game is better than poe1 one in terms of speed and overall mindset it seems but my god GGG really fucked up some things that we all knew it was problematic from PoE1 like having rarity affect currency for example or having this shitty armor formula. 0:38 Incorrect, armor is not in a good spot. You only play hardcore in PoE1 so when you get armor you get WAY too much armor for a softcore player. Softcore players don't care if they die, they care if they get one-shot and they care if their casual/meme builds are compromised. 2000 armor is not good, that shield is used much less than in hardcore and people would much rather run Determination and forget about armor than invest in anything more than that (hence why Determination aura gets nerfed/changed constantly) Also that shield is a horrible example. It converts some phys to fire and it has an average 45% chance to block. It's very hard to determine if 2000 armor is actually helping or not with a shield like that or if it's the other MUCH better stats. EDIT: Also it drops from Exarch, if you're getting that far in the game to get such a shield then your build is doing just fine imo.

No one expects armor to tank the equivalent of a maven memory game explosion but it should at least be as effective as energy shield. Tried making a new warrior from being a monk and my warrior got hard stuck at draven and it was hilarious how bad melee is. Even the auto attack is too slow and will get you punished everytime. found myself using rolling slam and pressing back to cancel the second slam to at least get a 1 meaning hit that comes out fast. In short it feels more "knights of the fallen" than dark souls.
@lavq7000Күн бұрын
Does it tho? The example in the video is very clear. You should not be able to tank a telegraphed Big hit from a boss. Unless you invest a LOT into that specific defense . I think that makes sense for the game. The issue with armour is not about bossing (even now it does allow life characters to tank pinacle bosses attacks) . The problem is that it is not as effective in mapping and that Energy shield is completly broken in comparison right now.

Can you give an argument? I can say pigs should fly but who gives a fuck.
@dieuwtjinКүн бұрын
I agree with some of the points made here, but the argument of '8 k armor with 5 k health is probably the same as a 9 k energy shield' makes absolutely no sense as 5 k health is impossible to obtain, while 9 k es is trivially easy. The issue is that maximum life does not have any talent or item support the way en energy shield does. Until max life is gained with the same relative easy, energy shield will always be better. Even if es gets like a 50% nerf

What I'm thinking is that Armour should get Guard skills that grant Guard (which is basically Ward from PoE1) based off player's Armour amount, kind of how Molten Shell does in PoE1. That would fix the one-shot while granting skilled armour-based players chance to respond and protect themselves against huge damage attacks. That, with formula buff should bring Armour to good level, especially if GGG decides to not increase base Life levels.

@gilescorey6569Күн бұрын
One other problem is the fact that the builds using armor are usually also using HP, which is INSANELY bad right now. It gets to the point where people are building melee characters with CI, just because it is so much easier to stack yourself 8k Energy Shield using some of the passives and enabling an aura which will overflow your ES to insane values like 12k+

Imagine if the overwhelm armor mod on rare enemies would remove an amount of armor instead of a percentage of armor. Building more armor would actually help, just like building more DPS helps against rares with extra life and extra resists.
@MrMetFanSCКүн бұрын
Honestly D4 has the right idea here you should have a flat amount of armor that you kind of want to expect your physical resistance to be if you want to do armor otherwise if it is just another defensive layer it should be % phys mitigation instead of armor so it works the same regardless of the damage done
@max41748111 сағат бұрын
Flat amount=flat builds
@ddot1007Күн бұрын
I agree that there should be no build where it lets you just tank a big slam, but I think the biggest frustration comes from the fact that its not the big boss slam that many people die from, but its random mob, sometimes even white mobs that somehow take you from 100 to 0 in such a short time that you cant even react from it. The thing is, some people may say armour was always meant to block against chip damage, but in end game mapping, many of the "chip" damage does so much damage that I can't really see armour being a super viable option.
@brofstКүн бұрын
Another factor is that armour only works on phys. In PoE1 we addressed this by taking some (decent) max res nodes on the tree; those options don't exist in PoE2. Meanwhile, Evasion builds had to spec very heavily into spell suppression on all their gear as well as tree. In PoE2 they simply take acrobatics and/or Sorcery Ward and call it a day.
@Jimbr16Күн бұрын
Crit immunity is also something we don't have. Also we have a lot of negation on Ailments and corrupted blood and stuff so all damage you take is small and predictable. POE1 is about making all damage you take streamlined and small, you can't do that very well on POE2 yet

Even the PoE 1 Armour stacker, with all the mirrors worth of gear, utilizes multiple layers of defense to maximize the usefulness of Armour, though certain methods have been removed or nerfed over time, such as full conversion of physical damage to elemental damage. It speaks volumes that such well discussed and basically perfected builds exist and the layers they optimize for scaling defenses were overlooked or removed. Hopefully they will be added in the future and weren't ready yet, but it is a feelsbadman for now.

Do you have any thoughts on evasion? I noticed that in PoE2 it protects you from projectiles and strikes instead of all attack hits. This makes you evade some spells, sure, but it also leaves you vulnerable to big AoE spells (which is fine I guess, but could be considered), and most importantly - slam attacks. If armour is a tool against multiple small hits, evasions is supposed to be the tool against big ones. But most of bigger hits are slams. Does not make that much sence to me tbh.
@sheabishop6200Күн бұрын
Armour is the best defensive layer against white mobs. You need block or evasion (evasion has its issues as well) against magic and rares. If you don’t have avoidance of some kind, your character will die a lot

What is the thought about evasion rating ? ES is up there and armour down there, is ER in a good place ? I have to admit I really like my Merc build, I've tried a mix of dmg and tanking, but I really struggle to not get one shot through maps by having mostly armour and a bit of evasion. I'm not super good at the game so my build probably have a lot of issues, but it's been frustrating to see how little options I have for defence being all the into dex/str

There are other forms of defense layers we can attach still in the game. Block, Life recouping from hits, life regen. I agree with only relying on armor. It's not going to cut it.
@CowPimpКүн бұрын
I think they could remove random mods that grant overwhelm, but keep some amount of overwhelm on the telegraphed slams where the boss turns red. Then, armour characters get a warning when their defenses are about to be invalidated just like block/evade characters.
@beratsalija8888Күн бұрын
I largely agree with you, even though armour system is a bit convoluted in poe1 i find it fine as it is and having additional sources of mitigation or mechanics like conversion makes armour more effective and worth building. The problem i have is that even if we add these things in poe2 it will not alleviate the problem, heck may even make it worse because it may be better to still stack es and add more mitigation on top. And all of that is simply due to how the armour formula works in poe2. Not sure if you watched kripp's 2nd video on this topic, and if the information presented there is correct just removing overwhelm or even armour break will not solve the issue, the change to the formula in poe2 made armour pretty much useless and not just against bosses but even against smaller hits as well. You need absurd numbers to actually make it feel good, numbers which we literally cannot get atm as we don't have enough sources to scale our armour.
@Sinsfromhellv1Күн бұрын
This is exactly what I think the majority of players have-the mindset of PoE1. People are facetanking everything and then complaining about getting one-shotted. They literally added new defensive mechanics to the game, such as Dodge Roll and Raise Shield.
@cman2458Күн бұрын
I think its just confusing overall, new players to the game (me included) thought armor for a Warrior was their version of defense and mages/rogues got energy shield. But it sounds like armor is for damage reduction from small hits like a bonus and energy shield is the main regen "armor" which is very strange because most games its like that. Also most of the warrior node are all attack or all defense early on so it very deceptive.
