Germany always gets a bit of a bad name for being strict, structured and no fun, however, i think Germany is an amazing place that sometimes doesn't get as much recognition as it should..
So i made this video talking about i few thing I like that Germany does.. ENJOY!

One of the most moving things in all of Hannover is the DOOR of the Marktkirche, when it is CLOSED. It tells the story of Germany's fall into Nazism, the catastrophe of WWII, and the rebuilding after the war. The bronze picture story closes with an admonition.

I was surprised that you didn't reflect on the '1945' scale model of the destroyed city. On the other side, there was another maquette probably on the actual Hannover. In fact, a lot of the buildings were rebuilt according to their ancient plans. The 'old' is in a certain sense the fake but it explains how people like to have imaginative anchors in the past.

(probably mentioned somewhere down below) 1:51: actually that's the "Neue Rathaus" (new Town Hall). It was built between 1901 and 1913 in an "wilhelminic style", just to confuse people ;) The old town hall built in 1230 is near the "Marktkirche", just where you tried to get pictures of the firefighters' wedding. The New Town Hall is one of Hannovers most iconic photo locations. There's a park in the backyard with a lake. And anybody with a camera who considers himself a "serious photographer" takes pictures of the new town hall from theback during blue hour (just google "Neues Rathaus Hannover"). Just look for the spots at the lake shore where there's no more grass (but you'd have to be early, otherwise all the good spots are taken). On the point of germany being green (I'll leave out the more rural areas ;) : Despite jokes about Hannover not being one of germanies "real" main cities (ok, the joke is: Hannover isn't actually on the ass of the world, but you can definetly see it from there), Hannover is definetly considered one of germanies most green "larger" cities. So, this may add to your impression of germany being a green country ;)
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacob, I always enjoy your videos about "my" city. And this time you were between Steintor and New town hall, where I live. Just some remarks.... The wedding was in the old town hall. The church beneath it is the Marktkirche. The oldest church of Hannover. To enter the platform is only possible by a very special elevator and no, that is not free. It's, I think 3€. You can get the ticket for it in the entrance hall and there is a sign how long you have to wait for the ride. The elevator has a capacity of only 5 passengers plus the operator. But I can recommend it, you will have a fantastic view of Hannover. If you need a guide for some nice places here, let me know.

Not all museums are free, but those that require a fee usually use that to provide more information and a more immersive experience. There's an old Hünengrab just off the small coast road north of Eckernförde that's completely open, but the entrance fee to the Haithabu museum south of Schleswig gives you access to far more details about the Vikings. While you're in the are you might want to visit the Freilichtmuseum Molfsee, where you'll find restored buildings and workshops from different time periods. Just plan accordingly - you'll want to spend hours at every museum ;-)

The 1943 model is an accurate model of the destruction of Hannover after the fire-bombing. I once lived in one of the houses that survived and is on the model - accurate right down to the fact that the top story was destroyed, but not the rest of the house. That is exactly what you see on the model. Fantastic.
@Killian.Hardegen
@Killian.Hardegen 4 жыл бұрын
Hey man, it´s funny that you mention germans not destroying old for new stuff. Especially in Hannover the war took care of that. 85 % of the Houses in Hannover where destroyed by air raids, so Hannover pretty much changed it´s charakter and was rebuild in a different kind of way. The part of Hannover, which today is known as "Altstadt" with all the pubs in it, actually has lot´s of old houses that never originally stood there. They where dismantled from other places around the city and rebuild concentrated at that spot to mimic the historic City Center. Great vid!

Not sacrificing the old for the new is actually only a more recent tendency in German city planning. With Hannover you are actually in the prime exemplar city for what was done all over Germany after WWII: the few old buildings left standing after bombing raids were torn down, too, in order to build wider streets and make cities more car friendly. Architects and city planners in many places back then were actually sort of happy for the destruction that had happened as they finally could get rid of narrow medieval city structures and build "modern" cities.

A friend of mine lived in the oldest house in our tiny little village. It currently is over 450 years old, yet from the outside you wouldn't believe it. But once you get inside you can see the low ceilings throughout the house. The whole village was first mentioned in the local church registry around 1108. Since that time the village has never been completely abandoned, even through disease, wars, etc.

Hannover lost a lot of it's historical buildings during WW2 so they had a lot of free space to build new stuff and are extra carefull to keep the old stuff. That happened to a lot of the bigger cities. If you go a bit further back in history to the 19th century you'll find that they broke down a lot of historical buildings because they were in the way (nearly no bigger city has a city wall anymore but if you look on a map you can often see where they once stood: mostly where now a circular street around the city center is - or a circular park area). I think it changes your perspective if you loose a lot of stuff unintentionally. :o)

Germany is probably one of the best countries on Earth. It's constitution (Grundgesetz) is one of the most just laws ever. It's people are generally open, welcoming, kind, and the public youth is relaxed, progressive and very liberal. Germany has a very rich history, great buildings, castles, classy old towns with stone roads and middle-aged houses, cathedrals, and phenomenal architechtural structures like churches. It's economy (a fair mixture of free-market capitalism and socialism) is very strong and stable, primarily due to dual-studying, an education explosion, hidden champions (specialized companies) and focus on STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, maths). A lot of intellectual thinkers, great composers, philosophers, writers, mathematicians, and physicists were german: Immanuel Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Marx, Schopenhauer, Einstein, Kepler, Goethe, Schiller, Werner von Braun, Werner Heisenberg, Max Plank, Bosch, Haber, Euler, Riemann, Leipzig, Gauss, Beethoven, Brahms, Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann. German academics lay huge value in objectivity and information. German universities are almost free. German healthcare is almost free. If you're unemployed you get some monthly money from the government to keep you above poverty line. It's in my honest opinion one of the best countries on earth.

It is true though, that you can visit most of our castles for free. 2nd point with the history buildings. Ehm, ofc we do not destroy buildings who look this fantastic and are like 1000 years old. We restore them. Germany is great because we work very accurate and keep our environment clean. We have some great beers, if you enjoy those kind of drinks and some great regional foods. Our bread is fantastic and the best in the world, just like our health care system. I think most of us are very helpful and if you try to speak a little German(just like in every other country I guess) people appreciate the effort, regardless of your language skill and are even more likely to help you out in any situation.

WTF. 5 mins into the film and the only "fact" up to then is showing the Town Hall, which is for free. Really, there are toWn halls in the UK that charge you to enter? The Town Hall/Rathaus is actually the New Rathaus. He was standing right next to the Old Rathaus in the beginning seemingly being unaware. Germany is grerat BTW because Germans in general are great people. Lived in Hannover myself for 25 years. No comment on the picture when entering the the New Rathaus showing flattened Hannover at the end of WW2? Courtesy of Bomber Command RAF and the USAAF..

Wearing a hat, cap or hood inside of buildings is impolite in Germany. So: take them off - not only in churches! Exception: synagoges.

Not necessarily if you are just strolling down the corridor minding your own business. It is impolite to wear a hat if you have a conversation or attend a meeting indoors.

Have you ever visited the Museumsinsel "island of museums" in Berlin. There are an absolute must. Especially Pergamon- and Bode-museum. But the entry costs nowadays a fortune. After the opening of the border between east and west in 1991 the Pergamonmuseum costed 0.50€, Audio Guide included. Today it costs about 20 €. So I have to disappoint you and tell you the truth. Germany is really fu**ing expensive. For everything you need from the city hall you have to pay about 10 to 20 €. A birth certificate is only valid for 6 months. So that is that for example. And amusement parks, important sights are expensive! Period
@Toddel1234567

A birth certificate is only valid for 6 months?! This is nonsense. A birth certificate is valid for a lifetime in Germany. If you have lost it you have to apply for it again and pay a few euros. With all my love, I don't find 20 € for the Pergamon Museum too expensive. It is a reasonable price for what you can see there. And if they are unemployed they even get free entry. I cannot understand your criticism.
