The tradition of eating dim sum on Sundays existed in my Italian family living in Melbourne, Australia. When my sisters and I became teenagers we used to go without our parents and devour up to 19 different dishes in one go between the three of us. I would always get an extra serving of the chicken feet in black bean sauce just for myself. When we are together we still go and eat it. Yum Cha will forever be my favourite food experience.

Growing up in HK, we didn't think too much about it at all. It was something we did every weekend with our extended family. One of us would go to dim sum restaurant ahead of time, get a ticket and wait for empty table. Through dim sum, our family got to see each other each Sunday:) What a great tradition!

Eating is only half the experience, enjoying the tea and the time spent doing so is actually as much a part of "Yum Cha" as the dim sum described here

When I was growing up, I remember my mother wanting to get dim sum almost every weekend. As a young child, of course, I tagged along and got my first exposure to the different dim sum items. As I became a teenager and into my twenties, I remember losing interest in dim sum because I thought of it as being unhealthy. And, I didn't have the strong cultural connection to it like my mother did. Now...as an aging adult, I understand that connection and what it means to Cantonese/Hong Kong culture. And, because of that, I embrace that tradition. I hope dim sum culture prospers long into the future.

what makes you think it's unhealthy? there were few obese people in Asia before Micky D, KFC, Dunkin Donuts, and Pizza Hut.

My family of different generaltion i.e mom & dad (now grandparants), brother, sister + her husband, nice, nephew go to yum cha every now and then. Generally, we as the whole family always go to yum cha breakfast on the 2nd day of Luna New Year. It has been our family tradition for years :) We're from Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. Even we're not Hong Kong, we're 100% Vietnamese but we live, grow up in China town and a wonderfull Chinese/Hongkongese/Taiwanese community. And the community influence the way of our life and out tradition.

Dim sum has to be one of my favorite things. I’m not Asian, but my family and I would go to dim sum service at a Chinese restaurant close by at least once a month. Har gow, siu mai, char siu bao, no mai gai, sesame balls, and of course, egg tarts. Those are my favorites.

Sadly, a lot of restaurants are getting their dim sums that were mass produce and frozen. Only a few restaurant’s dim sums are made in house. That’s mainly due to high rents and the old dim sum masters have retired and few young people wants to work in the kitchen

Born and raise in hk I don’t really agreed with you as there are loads of small dim sum shops that are making their own dim sum, u might just go to those tourism restaurants to make your comments but please don’t manipulate people by your own opinions.

Strange, I always feel a sort of strange affinity to HK eventhough I've never been there. I've just grown up with elder family members speaking in Cantonese and with TVB dramas playing on TV. HK has gone through quite a lot of changes in the past couple of years. I can only hope HK's charm and culture never gets washed away...

Calgary, Canada. It started with a huge dim sum palace in down town. I would join my brother and his friends for a Sunday feast. Taro I understand is only offered at the best places. Rice crepes with beef, shrimp or BBQ pork are almost the perfect bite. I need to move to LA or Hong Kong. Honest, there should be a global Dim Dum empire chain to help people feel happy, properly fed and relaxed. The dumpling is the best weapon because it will rule the markets so no need for weapons anymore. I'm serious. I rank dim sum as the master cuisine. I need it!!!

As a kid growing up in Hawaii there was too many uncles and aunts and cousins to go too a dim sum restaurant as there would be 20 to 30 of us. What we did was buy dozens and dozens of shui mai, smooth skin char sui baos, pork and ginger Cresent moon shaped shui mais etc and bring them home in pink boxes from a small hole in the wall. Never drank tea with them until later in life when I actually went to a dim sum restaurant.
