@@thapa3107 No Adrash. Colonel is a rank, but C/O, i.e., Commanding officer is a designation of a regiment, and I was explaning the situation in my country, Sri Lanka. For instance a Lt. Col can become the C/O of a regiment. I was saying due to the conflicts of the war we had, in certain occassions officers in the rank of Major were given the designation of C/O of their regiments

I am from Uttarakhand and also qualified NCC C certificate with A grade till my PG, I missed my time when selected for OTA in 2006, but hard luck in medical. After my batch some of my friends selected in the subsequent batches and still serving in Indian army as lt.col. I still remember my hard luck even same happened in Air force after my PABT. Later i selected in cabinet secretariat (R&W) as DFO then in SFO(ARC). And i have to left it because of corruption and no powers given to us by earlier governments. But now living my life in some corner and doing job in pvt. Sector to earn and support my family my daughter. But trust me I never forget those memories how enthusiastic we were to serve our nation which is still somewhere inside the heart.

Though he is a Lt Gen. But whenever they used to visit their unit they use to wear the rank of colonel I learnt this from a colenl rank officer Pls clarify you content again

Not the unit bud, the regiment, the appointment is called ‘colonel of the regiment’, this role is conferred upon Lt.Generals. A ‘colonel’ leads a battalion within the regiment, a ‘colonel of the regiment’ is for the entire regiment.

@@aditsinghyadav A regiment consists a minimum of 2 batallions, the parachute regiment has 17 batallions , a batallion is also called a unit, parachute regiment has 17 batallions/units, 9 are SFs, 5 units are airborne,1 unit is RR and 2 units are TA. I don't think you know the structuring of the army 😂

First thing first you gave the organisation of a parachute regiment of indian army , which again is taken from wikipedia of para regiment. Secondly in indian army there are number of regiments of different arms e.g Armoured, artillery , infantry so on and so forth. Regiment and battalion is a same thing in indian army. Now coming to col of the regiment. When the head of the arm is selected who is a lt gen, e.g head of the arm of armoured, he is called the colonel of the regiment of armoured and similarly colonel of regiment of different arms are there like infantry , artillery etc etc. In short don't google anything blindly. A regiment consists of two battalion and more , this concept is of US army . Again google smartly when doing research

Same thing can be said for Captain in Navy. It is even more confusing, Captain is a rank as well as any commanding officer on a ship is called Captain of that ship. For example a small ship like Patrol Boat can have a Lieutenants as a CO (Captain), while bigger ship like an aircraft carrier it might be a an actual Captain rank who is a CO. In reality most CO's of ships are actually junior than the Captain rank. Many Lt Commanders or Commanders are CO's (Captain) on most of the frigates, Destroyers, Corvettes, Cruisers Etc. Irony is if a Captain rank officer is a visiting a ship for whatever reason, he has to call the commanding officer a Captain even though the Commanding officer is much junior than him.

But funny. Also comical is the. Army rank badges as a Maj Gen wears sword withswordstar (denoting Lt) and a Lt Gen wears rank badge of a zword with a Ashoka(rank badge of a Major. Further a Maj is senior to a 2nd Lt (one star)

Probably in Indian Army they have different name for this post but in PAK ARMY this designation is known as Colonel-Commandant of any regiment for instance Colonel-Commandant Punjab Regiment etc. This is an honorary designation given to the senior most General of that regiment.
