Here's what happened: Sellers looked at Astral Radiance and thought, "Hm, what's going to be the chase card here?" and then thought, "Ah, I guess the Machamp alt art is about the best we're going to get," and then set a totally artificial price of 150 bucks. Collectors looked at the price and thought, "Guess this is the best card of the set. I should buy it." The end. It's annoying, but yeah.

the reason why machamp skyrocketed in value is because a group of tcgplayer sellers saw an opportunity to hike up the prices on the card, a little market manipulation goes a long way because I know most people who follow the market expected it to be under 30 within the first month. No doubt that it's an awesome card but the reason behind the price isn't popularity, or it being from gen 1. It is because of sellers capitalizing off of the astral radiance situation.

I have a possible explanation based on the salesdata on a european side called „Cardmarket“. I‘m not a native English speaker- so please excuse my bad english. In Europe it is the same thing with Machamp. I remember it being a 30-40 euro card in the beginning. One guy bought all the cards that were listed there for around 30 euros and every time one was listed for 30 euros it was instantly gone. I know it because i had a „buying alarm“ on „cardmarket“. One guy or one company bought all the Machamps when there wasn’t a lot of supply yet and listed them for way more. He basically had a monopole on the supply of Machamps on Cardmarket at the time when you could just pull it in packs at Prerelease tournaments. Then it got to the weird dynamic, you described at the end of the video. Because there was nobody selling it around 30 euros anymore, nobody, who pulled that card, was listing it around that price. So everbody who really wants the Machamp card right now, has to buy it for a premium price. Maybe it’s the same in the UK and the US?

I'm seeing people say that this was a buyout, but I'm not sure about that. People were listing them on TCGPlayer around $60 until on May 29th. On that day at one point there was only one Machamp listed, at $125. It seems that at that point someone took the plung at that price, thus setting the new standard. Purchase history prior to that saw people only buying a single copy, a trend that is the opposite of what you normally see with buyouts. Now does that rule out that the price was manipulated, no it doesn't. However it seems that this might just be a fluke. There is an article posted on TCGPlayer on June 3rd that attempts to explain what happened.

Well i can tell you that over in germany it evolved like ptcgradio explained. At first the machamp Alt art was on cardmarket for around 40€ (in german language) it was there for at least a few weeks when it suddenly from 40€ it doubled its price to 80€ in a span of I dont know less than a week which is weird because prices normally dont rise so fast unless there is a buyout. The thing is there were also many sellers who were selling that card so I do think that a buyout is probably what happened. Like ptcgradio said it isnt a very playable nor a very popular pkmn like umbreon or charizard. I asked some shops an they told me because it is short printed but that sounded kinda bs to me, even if it were short printed unless its a popular pkmn or a very playable the price shouldn jump that high.

A card is worth as much as a buyer will pay for it. I think these Machamps are super hard to pull, and the supply is very tight. Small supply + high demand = valuable card. Pull rates on the Japanese machamp were better than English, hence a more expensive card. I don't think a buyout was to blame. Machamp is VERY popular in Pokemon GO, often picked for raid battles. Machamp had a Gigantamax form. He's the quintessential fighting type for Gen 1. He's playable in Pokken Tournament.

@bradcritchley73062 жыл бұрын
Maybe this may shed some light on your question Wossy, and assist with your answer because like yourself, I find it very hard to justify its price. Now I had to scour this thread and I see the overwhelming love and praise for Machamp and its alt art card. Now myself, Im a Gengar fan, so I can understand paying top price for a card you love. I remember dishing out more money than I could fathom when it was released that sowsow was doing the alt art Vmax. So to credit the people saying its an amazing card I can understand the love and hype. But overall i feel the likability of a card and its price are completely subjective. Its like you said wossy, the beedrill card is going for far less and I feel like its a more beautiful art than the machamp. Now everyone here can @ me but in all reality it is just the subjectiveness of what we all like, and that doesnt impact the price, its always typically been a combination of the art, playability, and scarecity(this is important). You see after the set launched there is a group, I cant remember if its TCG player, or Troll & Toad, but they open thousands and thousands of packs and what they found I believe helped shape the price of Machamp. They found that the two hardest Alt art cards to find in the set was Hisuian Sneasler, and Machamp V. Both of which saw an instant uptick in price, all because it was believed it was allegedly harder to pull. SOme of the other alt art cards we can agree like in the past the Vmax alt art cards are far harder to pull (statistically) that the regular V alt arts, and the price for the most part reflects that. So during that boom, we did see sneasler drop from its $90 peak (Im canadian so the conversion is different) but machamp didn't. I dont think it dropped because of two reasons. 1) Its a gen 1 card so the hype remained around where as sneasler dropped off; and 2) Most people want it to stay a high cost card. Now that they have invested money into it they want to keep it at that price. Anyways thanks for hearing my mini rant of opinions. Love you all and hope your day is going well!

Honestly, it’s simple. The card was initially bought out, and supply was never replenished. Collectors/sellers are the main people who rip packs and provide supply, and Astral is a mediocre collectors set (which is why booster box prices are low - no demand) Most casuals aren’t going out of their way to open Astral and chase a mid-tier Pokemon like Machamp. Why would they, when there are other options like Evolving Skies or Brilliant Stars? This is an example of a (temporarily) successful buyout.

@ptcgradio If you want to see what an accurate form of Market Manipulation looks like, look at Alt Art Sneasler. The card doubled in value in a week, and now has dropped over the past 3 months sharply. The difference between this card and Machamp is people actually want Machamp and like him. I think your bias of maybe not liking the card as much as others is blinding you.

Maybe good Machamp cards are a rare thing and many Machamp fans get nuts from this card!

Reading the comments reminds me how little the average consumer/watcher actually knows about pull rates and market manipulation. All those investor channels need viewers I suppose, but come on people. It’s not that difficult.

The art is fantastic but I guarantee if you wait a bit it drops like a rock

Thinking that outside some market manipulation, the tepid response to astral radiance is having a direct impact on this card. I agree there was some monopolistic behavior at first.

Great video and analysis. Possibly market manupilation by hyping up the price of the card at the start and see how far the bluff goes. If no one buys it, it'll drop soon enough. If people starts to FOMO, price stays high.

market manipulation for a card doesnt last 3 months. People just like the card and clearly it's pull rates aren't super high. It'll continue to come down some while new sets come out but once out of production i'd expect it to go back up some

Like all art pokemon art is subjective. I just think people especially American like the story the Machamp V alt art tells. He is off to get his calories in and get swoll! I think it is great.

A bunch of people who collect cards getting angry at the free market. The art is just better, get over it.

I feel like machamp is just a popular Kanto Pokémon. But maybe not.

Machamp art is 10x better than genescts art and when the card is old and falls from playability the art and rarity is all that remains and frankly Machamp card art is so much better and Machamp is a classic gen 1 favorite

Probably cause some guy hyped it up and there was a low pop printed

One of the last cards I need for my master set and I do not want to pay that price for this I’ll probably conduct a trade somewhere down the line

Just because things are cheaper in Japan doesn't mean anything. Plenty of cards are cheaper in Japanese over here. Just like plenty of cards especially full art waifu trainers are more expensive in Japanese. Its all about what people want
