I figured out that an outlet in my friend's music room wasn't properly grounded when I happened to touch the chassis of the rack mount, which surprisingly we had never touched while the amps were plugged in. It was only a tingling sensation like putting a 9v battery on your tongue. We plugged the power supply into a different outlet and that fixed the problem.

I was jamming at a little little stage at a bar one time and I was shocked like you can't believe.. I stepped in a puddle of bear or something and man it grabbed me.. Another time I was shocked by touching the microphone stand.. I had an old Fender Twin reverb.. This amp didn't have a 3 prong plug and the building was about 110 years old and who knows how old the electrical wiring was.. I ended up getting active pickups so I wasn't grounding the strings and I bought a Nady wireless at the time.. I've never been shocked since.. I don't use old stuff now like the Fender twin which was stolen.. Even if I had an old amp I would get it fixed.. Scared me.. I hate being shocked.. Thanks so much for this..Very cool stuff..

I'm a live music venue owner in Japan. Before I opened last year, I had all of the wall outlets changed to accept three prong cords. The outlets are safety grounded. We have never had a shock problem until yesterday. I have a 1969 Fender Super Reverb from America with a step up transformer. The amp is 120V and has a three prong power cord. The step up transformer accepts the three prong cord, but the other end that goes into the 100V wall has only two prongs. We've been using the amp fine for one year and on the previous night too. So when the guitarist got shocked at sound check, we were surprised. We figured out that only this amp was the problem. My question is, why did unplugging the transformer from the wall, rotating the prongs, and reinserting it in the same outlet fix our problem? Did our amp have a buildup of static electricity? I will definitely buy a three prong transformer, but I want to know what the original problem was. I will test the amp with a voltmeter today as per your video. Thank you so much!
@AudioUniversity
@AudioUniversity 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not certain, here. My guess is that the transformer removed the pathway to ground. A transformer creates a gap, removing the direct, wired connection. Search around on Google for how transformers work, and that might make what I’ve written here make more sense.
@johnreardon4944
@johnreardon4944 2 жыл бұрын
@@AudioUniversity Thank you so much for the reply. I think you're right. I will start there. I have a decent understanding about transformers already so I get what you're saying. I'm a drummer so I don't mess with the amps much. I did, however, know that grounding is important hence I spent money to upgrade the outlets before I opened. Most old Japanese buildings only have the outlets for two prong plugs.

The ground wire is just a safety meassure to provide a route for the current from the chassis to the neutral wire if a hot wire ever touches the chassis, this is not a normal situation and means that your electronic device is BROKEN, checking if the chassis is connected to the ground wire will not solve the problem and it is still dangerous if the situation described above ever occurs, there should absolutely never be any voltage on the chassis of the device, if there is, either open up the device and check for any disconnections or just toss that shit away

Good video. Here's what happened to me. I was getting shocked while holding my guitar while touching the string, amp on. It turned out to be an outlet. There's a green light on my power strip, when it'son, I'm grounded. I noticed it wasn't on. I wiggled the pluf, while it was in the wall outlet. The green light flickered on and off. The ground on the wall outlet is loose.

Good day, sir. I feel electricity whenever I play my electric guitar. I think I feel it when I touch the strings. My amp, which is a Boss Katana MK II, does not have a 3-pronged plug. @@AudioUniversity My amp is relatively new and the model was only released last year. Do you think the amp really could be the problem? I also read that it is common practice for guitars to have groundings run current through the metal bridge and onto the strings to give off the excess electricity to the hands or body. When I touch mine, the electricity is very noticeable, sometimes even uncomfortable. Do you think this is safe?

Would a power conditioner solve the problem if it's the main power source? (power strip or wall outlets)
@AudioUniversity
@AudioUniversity 3 жыл бұрын
The power conditioner would only solve the problem if it provides a pathway to ground that was not there without it. A power strip could help solve buzz issues by establishing a common ground reference to all of the connected devices. Plugging connected devices to different power sources can sometimes cause a ground loop, which results in a "buzz".

The noise probably becomes quieter when you adjust the tone knob only because the upper harmonics of the buzz are being turned down. I would say it's worth taking the amp to a repair shop to see if they can find any shorted connections to the chassis. I don't know much about the specifics, but I believe the capacitors in an amplifier maintain a charge for some time after the amplifier is unplugged. Just because it's unplugged doesn't mean it's safe to work with. I'd recommend reaching out to someone with more experience in amplifier repair if you're interested in learning to repair them yourself. Good luck! Be safe!

The guitar is grounded to the amplifier. You can verify the guitar grounding is correct by checking continuity with a multimeter between the bridge of the guitar and the sleeve of the instrument cable.

It might be a ground loop. I’ll be making a video on this eventually, but search ‘ground loop’ on KZbin and watch some videos. You can probably fix the problem by plugging them into the same power source or using a ground lift in the audio connection.

Hello! This video has been really helpful! I wanted to tell you about the problem that i've been having with my equipment. Maybe you could help me find out what seems to be the malfunction.. Recently i bought a brand new electric guitar and an used 10w amp (this because of budget issues haha) and i've been experiencing electric shocks whenever I touch the power switch of the amp. This amplifier has the three plugs. What i've noticed in these couple of days since I bought all of this equipment, is that I get the shock when I touch the amp (while is connected to an extension where I also connect my PC, the monitor and desk lamp) at the same time that i'm grabbing my guitar.. I plugged the amp directly to a socket and did'nt receive any shock that way.. but in reality i'm a little afraid to confirm it again.. What are your thoughts? I'd really appreciate if you could help because this has been kind of a bummer
@AudioUniversity
@AudioUniversity 4 жыл бұрын
It is possible that plugging into the same power circuit that your other equipment is using was the problem. I'm no expert, but I can imagine a loop created like the one I described in the video. I'd recommend avoiding plugging into that circuit if it causes a shock. Thanks for watching! Good luck!

That means that there is “continuity” between the two probes. In other words, the circuit is closed. When testing the amplifier, you are testing to make sure the different parts of the amp are connected. So, if you see a “1” that’s good, because it indicates the probes are connected. Does that make sense?
