I couldn't get into any kpop group after 2nd gen until NewJeans came and never really thought why until I realized it's because their music reminds me of 2nd gen. Simple yet extremely catchy songs with choreo that favor "easy" moves where everyone can follow along instead of choreo that looks like will break your neck in half. Old fans found NewJeans nostalgic, while new fans found them a breath of fresh air from MOST new groups' loud music.

other than their style, song, and concept. i really love their personality too, they are not force to do some personality concept like “the elegant one”, “the boyish”, “indepent woman”, “the cute one”, etc. they just being group of friends that having fun together and being themselves. its just boring that woman should look bold, edgy, boyish, etc. in order to look cool, strong and standout. you still can be standout and amazing for being feminime and girly.
@topzki47

Funny how you mention its boring. There was a time when the things you mentioned where very cool before because women didn’t really express themselves boldly. Trends shift and one day Newjeans style will grow old and the group will mature out of it and no longer fit this concept. I wonder if you’ll still be a fan of that sound then? But i wont deny they are very refreshing and are thriving.

Some people dont like the latest album but I think as a one-year anniversary album, it feels like a compilation and evolution of all the 6 songs that came before it. Attention = Super Shy: Summer catchy dance song Ditto = Cool with you: Slow song with multiple meaning MVs Hype Boy = New Jeans: Each member has their own MV, or character meant to introduced/reintroduced them. OMG = ETA: Fast paced, fun, and a bit controversy topic for the MV. Hurt = ASAP: mellow song with lots of close up shot and a dreamlike filter. Cookie = Get Up: Both are really good catchy song that hold back by questionable lyrics or length. Zero = I dont even count this song, okay? lol Plus, all their songs not only have so much effort put into it, but also each has a unique thing. Ditto, OMG, Cool with you, Get up are all songs with deep meaning in the MVs. ETA shot entirely on iphone. Cookie with its controversy lyrics. Hype Boy with 4 MVs to introduce the member. Hurt is a close up and first slow-paced song of them to contrast the rest of the album and showing the tone of the members. New Jeans is a powerpuff girls collab and low-key light stick ads lol. ASAP has a weird fairy concept, and it is a loop song. I agree that lyrics wise it is kinda repetitive and the songs are way too short nowadays but as a whole no group is doing it like Newjeans!!!

OMG I had this same thought tho I associate some of the songs differently: Hype Boy to ETA as the girls represent more of High Schoolers and their experiences, how both of have interesting sound that start them (Hype boy has the synth beat + clacking and ETA has that whole siren alarm) that's very loud plus how they start both of the song in their dance all of them sort of talking each other and then baam performance. Zero is to New Jeans in sense that's it's more of a song in collaboration with a company (Zero is to Coke and New Jeans is to the Powerpuff girls

They’re a breath of fresh air, they’re all SO talented whether it comes to singing or dancing, they just don’t miss. @@purplenutria1351 i don’t just mean their music, i mean their respective vocal tones. hanni alone has a very unique and quite rare timbre. i haven’t listened to anything like her voice. crisp clear and insanely pretty. danielle and hyein sound like a basic western pop singer (very familiar and easy to listen to), and minji has a unique tessitura, her voice is deeper than the others, she only needs to work on her enunciation as it’s easy to tell she isn’t native. haerin is the only voice that could be considered kpop-ish, she sounds the least foriegn but still more foreign than most kpop singers. it’s an obvious calculated formula by everyone handling this group.

Yk what u right. The planning behind newjeans is genius. Mhj selected competent department heads from the choreographer, management, stylists, producers, songwriters...etc to bring together her vision for newjeans. And I as a consumer I'm happy. They are so tapped in to market interests. They giving us what we want. The sensory overload of current social media and music is why most of us are withdrawing and reaching for simpler things. You even see a rise in the tiktok sigilkore genre. They are so simple and repetitive but the artist voice is mellow and atmospheric making listening experience comforting. Anyways I'm just happy the chill music is packing up pots n pan music. Both can coexist but im glad the chill one is getting clout 😌 great video.

I've always been a casual kpop enjoyer so kpop used to be like slime vids for me- enjoyable but I have no emotional attachment to, until NWJNS. There's something about them that is beyond the technical aspect. Yes they dance good, sing good and are good to look at, much like any other groups, BUT they have the ability to easily infiltrate the heart as well. Unfortunately, it's one of those "either you have it or you dont" moments. It's highly subjective bu the girls that get it, get it. Approachable is the best word that I think summarizes them.

Imma be honest I like New Jeans But there's really nothing t h a t different about their music. It has great melodys, catchy and its good for tik tok's when I think new sound or different I honestly think more XG or ATEEZ because their doing things I've in fact never seen or heard before rather than having just a bunch of catchy hits. I see the appeal but its kind of annoying to me how other girl groups (that have been around longer) can do the same thing or something similar and people call it "tired and uninspired" but just because its coming from a newer group all of a sudden its new, hip and cool?? Makes no sense All people do is complain about older groups "flopping" or not being as appealing but in reality they are just drawn to new groups because their n e w and once they've been around for a while their just gonna move on to other groups its really sad.

Let me tell you why NewJeans became popular First of all ain’t nobody know about them or ADOR- or even knew Ador was apart of Hybe 1. Their music hit 2. Their fashion sense fits their own age group and you see that in Attention 3. Y2K fashion was in Kpop before NewJeans, but NewJeans made it impactful all around Korea because they made it their identity. Their sound was also reminiscent to old tunes from back in the 90s. 3. Their choreography wasn’t and does not do too much when it doesn’t need to. They’re choreography was not too easy but everyone can do it and try it at home. Sooner or later other groups started lessening the difficulties in their choreography. 4. In a moment where girl crush, boy crush, dark concepts, and EDM was all you were seeing in Kpop, NewJeans came with something old, reviving, refreshing, and new. 4. We haven’t seen an all minor-group in Kpop, so they are the first… or maybe there were minor groups before? I don’t know. But Korea definitely started being alive again due to NewJeans

New Jeans songs are amazing, I just like the fact that they are not doing too much, their style and everything looks simple and i get why people like them. what i can just say is that all 4th generation groups are different so not only new jeans, because as new jeans have their own sounds all other 4th gen also have their own sound. Some of the 4th gen. group songs might be noisy but that is their own sounds and their songs are different from eachother. Newjeans songs are amazing but they are not that unique the way people are putting it to be. Among 4th gen. group i can say their songs are unique for me is definitely Aespa. I can say New jeans styles are unique i won't doubt that and their songs are really soothing to ear. But the only songs i like from them are hype boy and hurt. I don't know for other people but apart from Hype boy, attention and Hurt, i found their recent comebacks similar to each other, the sounds are not unique, the songs are just similar to eachother so there's nothing new about the songs.

Honestly I'm not a huge fan of their recent comeback, for me it's too repetitive but I'm guessing it is so popular because of 1. Hybe which is BTS' company 2. They were so popular due to their previous comebacks 3. Their Y2K style as you were suggesting

Great video analysis. I would say NewJeans and Le Sserafim are definitely standouts. Other groups are also doing good work like NMIXX or XG for example. Just because those two groups are leading the charts, that doesn't mean 4th gen as a whole is boring or samey, as some people suggested. The narrative pushed by some people in comments is simply not true and it's attributed to their fanboyism, a toxic culture which unfortunately plagues K-Pop and takes away from the quality of their music industry. Fans of these groups are gatekeeping their own culture.

Love NewJeans, sound, concept, deep story lines, artistic dance performance videos (Cool With You), the members, everything. I am a Blink though, first and foremost. So I can see that their mv's just aren't exploding in the West, like I think they should be. There definitely is an audience in the West for NewJeans, just doesn't seem to be to the Blackpink scale. Blackpink's edgier trap beats and raps and individual member's stage charisma brings in the young boys/men, and not just the young girls/women. Similar to why Lana Del Rey doesn't have the same level of popularity as Rihana or Beyonce. And that is IMO why Pink Venom has more views in 2 days than any NewJeans mv has ever recorded. I hope they continue to rise in popularity. I wish them continued success and hope to see them in an extended US tour next year.

Newjeans is Style, not Music. PD Min made a kind of fashion brand, not a girl band. 😊 K-pop is Style. Style has music, fashion, design, taste, art, item and everything about the era. K-pop industry makes the multi-sense thru K-pop. One source and multi using is basic strategy of K-pop. And K-pop has its own view of beauty, unique beauty standard. The beautiful white woman type that Korean likes is different from the type Westerners think.

there's a lot of theories about their new album, but tbh nothing really hit for me personally, bc i kinda feel like their first ep had more complexity to it. this ep is a little too simple in nature and the songs feel a bit empty. their dance is cool, but i feel like their concept is based pretty heavily on age, aesthetic and really, really good marketing

Loved this and i wanna add some stuff. Y2K specifically was the term used to describe an hypothesis that computers and other electronics would fail and collapse the word at the year 2000, nowadays we use the term to describe that era and its culture. Also i think the team behind them really thought out this and knew it would work. It was just a matter of time that some group capitalezed the nostalgia for the 00's, also being on trend at the same time, tooking musically from styles that today are very popular on the internet like drum n bass and Jersey Club, with artists in the western like Lil Uzi Vert and PinkPantheress going into those genres.

I think you could do separate videos on the music, the fashion, the choreo, the members, the storylines and tropes, the marketing, the music videos and teasers, and on the current industry with its global reach, and NewJeans would be cleverly positioned in each area. Which is why I think it all starts at the top because no one artist could be responsible for everything. This is a team effort. First, you have HYBE’s money and facilities and pulling power for talented trainees. Second, you have Executive Producer Min Hee Jin hired away from SM and her bosses like Bang PD who have creative instincts as well, approving her vision. Third, you have well paid artists under her like the music producer who chose the music, the choreographers who chose unique choreo to match that musical shift from the Aespa/Itzy style, the fashion designers, vocal coaches, lyricists, composers, film directors etc etc. Other KPOP companies have done one or more of these things before. f(x) shifted musically away from SNSD. Wonder Girls had nostalgia and English speaking members. JYP had a corporate team approach to TWICE and Itzy to create more content than ever before. But for me the astonishing thing about NewJeans has been the bold execution at each and every step. Others might be able to copy “the formula” in terms of the choreo or the music or the fashion, but to copy NewJeans you would have to have a team of artists, not just a music style or a change in choreography. Only JYP has the company structure in place to do something similar. And the supply of talented trainees capable of executing such a vision is limited with YG, SM, JYP, and now HYBE fighting for the same talents. NewJeans’ success shows what significant financial investment in a team of artists and performers can do, but it all starts with the leadership at the top, approving the choices of each department and making sure the result fits together. NewJeans’ music and marketing fit together perfectly and that is because of the producer, even the controversial conversation-starting storylines begin with the producer. So for me that is the true reason for NewJeans’ appeal right now.

I was a fan of 90s/00s pop back in the 90s/00s, but I hadn't consciously noticed the influence it has had on NewJeans until you pointed it out. It probably is a part of why I like them. The more obvious point, which you also make here, is that they have moved away from the heavier girl crush style which has been big for a while now. I think you explain their popularity as well as it can be explained conceptually. Beyond concept, there is just something that feels real and fresh about NewJeans. The way they are presented highlights these qualities, for sure, but it cannot manufacture them. They are just there.

An excellent analysis of why New Jeans is so popluar. One issue with Kpop, however, is that many fans (especially new fans in the US) assume that Kpop Idols have much more fredom and autonomy regarding their songs, themes, fashion and public personas than they actually do. I'm a big fan of NJ, but I've also been a Kpop fan long enough to realize that, while they're very talented and entertaing, they have little say in picking their songs, clothes and schedules. I know that's begining to change (ie Le Sserafim, G-Idle and to some extent, Aespa) but the overall tight management of Kpop groups remains the same. You're correct to discuss the management and staff behind the Idols who are skilled at marketing and advertising NJ to both old and new Kpop fans. Thanks for a well researched and thoughtout review.
