His story about his family is the TRUE essence of patriotism, in my opinion. A black man from a family of Jamaican immigrants, whose family experienced so much prejudice. But they met their hardship with grace and said, “I still believe in the hope of this country, this country would be incomplete without people like me.” What an incredible sentiment. I truly admire this intelligent, well-spoken, kind-hearted man.

I appreciate how two things that have most bothered me in politics worldwide in recent times were discussed here. First is the conflation of blind, occultic worship and elevation of people in power with patriotism, such that anyone who dares criticises this situation is seen and treated as an enemy of the State. The second is the apathy to elections developed by too many people who believe they have their lives in control and nothing the politicians do can affect them. Well, heads up, your decision to not vote is a decision in favour of the greater of the evils on offer and you will be affected by the actions and inactions of people in power whether you realise it or not. I'm impressed by Gov. Wes Moore and I definitely will pick up and read his book to find out more about him.

I think this is the best interview of this series so far because Hasan was more personally invested in the answers so there was less of the playful "cool" talk (sports metaphors or clothing references - in moderation are cool, but sometimes go too far in distracting). A lot of right-wing patriotism feels jingoistic, nationalistic, and freedom "no matter how many men, women, and children have to die for it." It's also hard to feel patriotic for a nation that does so much to hurt others around the world. The awkward forced patriotism that we have in public spaces in this country (pledge of allegiance, national anthems at sporting events, etc) , especially post-9/11 is on par with some of the most extreme nationalist regimes around the world and is deeply uncomfortable for me, knowing how we treat other countries around the world.

I am very critical of the U.S. Military, and I’ve studied how U.S. interference in the world over the past 200 years has brought real generational damage to millions and millions of people that is indefensible. The thing is, I also see what nations like Russia does, and nations like China, North Korea, and Iran who have made their intentions clear about what they would do if it weren’t for the U.S., like invading S. Korea or Taiwan. The U.S. military influence doesn’t exist in a vacuum. If it were to suddenly disappear or its threat significantly weakened, there are a number of despots eagerly waiting in line to take its place. We absolutely need to stop bombing civilians, or selling/donating our bombs to foreign countries who will bomb civilians. We also need to devote more of our money, time, and energy on taking care of Americans, including veterans who the government abandons once their time is served. There are countless changes we need to make to the military in order to stop being the villains to underdeveloped counties, but pacifying isn’t one of them. To think global conflict would deescalate if Americans stopped poking our noses where we don’t belong is naïve

Im still a little confused by the idea that social mobility is the be all end all of the world, and that climbing the socio-economic ladder is the greatest ideal to aspire to, because doesnt that pretty much just mean higher worker competition and a more and more intense rat race at the behest of ever more efficient corporate extraction of wealth? Should every individual aspire to climb to be as successful as these two men are? Shouldnt we aspire to live the median life, and for that median life to improve for everyone over time? What im trying to say is that I get as icked out by american toxic work culture and the idea that everyone is just a temporarily embarassed millionare as I do by the patriotism inherent to our empire
