What makes the Boeing 777 a successful aircraft within the Aviation Industry? How do we define it? In today's video, I take a look at the history of the Boeing 777, why it was built, how did it do order wise and how it fended off competition from Airbus with their A340!

The efficiency is a huge reason for the 777 success, it carries more people than an MD-11 but with only two engines
@TysonIke
@TysonIke 3 жыл бұрын
SpaceDog Global Entertainment it also is a success because Airbus didn’t have a competitor with the 777. The a340-200 and -300 are a lot smaller than the 777. The a340 was designed to be an ultra long range plane. The a340-600 did get orders as it was the size of the 777-300 and Boeing didn’t make the 777-300er until 2006. The a330 was too small for a lot of airlines too.

The sales for A340-600 though were very brief and ended as soon as 777-300ER became available and it mostly was ordered by quad lover Lufthansa who was launch customer for 747-8I despite their A380 order

Plane Facts Lufthansa group has placed some weird orders. Until 2016 the group as a whole only flew 6 777s with Austrian. Swiss got 12 777-300er aircraft in 2016. Lufthansa’s first 777 will actually be the 777x or I guess you could say their first 777 was the 777f. Lufthansa’s 747-8 order didn’t make much sense to me. It could have had to do with a good price or pilot and crew bases.

777's sucess lies on being a more flexible and easy-to-upgrade frame. Essentially the original 777 is dead after Airbus making 333 more capable. They managed to upgrade to 77W as a 747-alternative while 346 was screwed up. When Airbus made A350s they stretch again to 777X, meanwhile Airbus couldn't make A350-1100/2000 easily. If competed head to head, most airlines would find 333s the most efficient frame in that era, and it outsold both 772 and 343 by a large margin.

@@TysonIke It's really because the 747 was a gas guzzler and the A340 was doomed from the start, during ETOPS, twin engined jets were breaking records, before 2 engined aircrafts were allowed to fly over ponds, ETOPS was the entire reason it failed, and also because it was too costly to maintain, while it's smaller A330 was doing great, 777 was a complete nail in the coffin for the MD-11 and A340 along with the 747 passenger variant, it can do everything they can at a lower cost, it wasn't until the 77LR and 77W were 4 engined planes really had to dig their grave About LH group, they went for the 77W for Swiss because neither of Swiss A330/340 were not as versatile, so they wanted to expand, the 777 made sense, im not sure 100% why Austria has the 772 it can be because of commonality with their 767s. LH really ordered the 748I to operate different A380 routes at a fraction of the price because their current 744 was starting to age, as of now I doubt we will see anymore 744 and A380s from LH in the skies, they saw the superiority of the 777X and slapped at least 34 orders for the type

The A340 was very new at the time, but the 777 was just a lot more efficient. Two less engines means that much less maintenance, that much less complexity and in an era where jet engines became incredibly reliable, it actually even means a safer and more reliable airplane as there are that many less things that can go wrong. It was simply an excellent move by Boeing at a time when the company was focused on competing on the quality of its products rather than shenanigans and MDD-style management. After initially dismissing Airbus as a non-starter that would "sell 10 aircraft and then go out of business" (Boeing CEO's words at the time!), they realised that the little guys from Toulouse were there to stay and that they really meant business, so Boeing went to design and sell an aircraft that was simply better than what Airbus had in that segment.

I cannot agree with you more about the beauty of the A340. Given I grew up in the age of the 4 engine, narrow bodied era, the A340 comes the closest of all contemporary, commercial aircraft to the comely silhouettes of those great passenger jets that ushered in the jet age (hand over the heart). Thank-you for your great taste in aircraft. By the way, did you know that airbus uses the wings of the A340 to produce the A330 MRTT? Since the wiring, plumbing, and hardpoints are already part of the wing design, Airbus merely replaced the #1 and 4 engines with refueling pods. Those are some pretty smart engineers at Airbus.

The question what would have happened if Airbus launched the A350 at the same time as Boeing launched the 777 makes no sense at all. There are over 20 decades of technological progress between the two airplanes. If the A350 was designed in the early 1990s like the 777, it wouldn't be the A350 as we know it, it wouldn't have an all-composite fuselage and wings, it wouldn't have its extremely optimised airfoil, advanced avionics or efficient engines. Airbus did however launch the A330 around the same time, it's smaller than the 777 but it proved to be a huge success as well.

@jacobzimmermann59
@jacobzimmermann59 3 жыл бұрын
@@fighter5583 The A350's story is more complicated than that and quite strange, really. It is true that with the 787's success Airbus felt that they urgently needed a new large twinjet. In that way it was really prompted by the 787. But... if you remember, the original "A350" concept was more or less what became the the A330 NEO. Airlines didn't want it, eventually they were almost screaming at Leahy "which part of Clean. Sheet. Design. don't you understand?". After a year or two of dragging their feet Airbus eventually scrapped the idea and designed the A350 that we know today - except that they didn't pitch it against the 787, but rather the 777! Then, with that out of the way, they still needed a competitor to the 787, so they revived the old project to modernise the A330. It's still not selling much. So in a way the idea to build the A350 wouldn't have happened without the 787, but when it comes to specificcs, it has actually been specced and targeted at the 777.
@fighter5583
@fighter5583 3 жыл бұрын
@@jacobzimmermann59 Yes. The idea of making a fuselage with mostly composites wasn't well considered back on the 90s. The A330neo of today could have very well been designated the A350 by 1990 standards. Airbus simply refined the specs to match the 777 when making the new clean sheet airlines sourly wanted to match Boeing's best selling twin at the time. The A330neo was mostly built to undercut the 787 price and get what few orders it could make from carriers who hadn't already traded their A330s for 787s.
@jacobzimmermann59
@jacobzimmermann59 3 жыл бұрын
@@fighter5583 Actually the 777 doesn't have a composite fuselage, not even the 777X. The 787 is the first Boeing with a composite fuselage and wing. The 77X has composite wings, but not the fuselage. Before the 787, the "most composite" plane was the the A380, with approx 20% of its gross weight being composites. Price-wise the A330neo doesn't even undercut the 787. It sits between the 787-8 and 787-9, being cheaper by some USD ~30M than the 787-9 while offering similar specs, but more expensive to operate on most routes. So for most airlines, the 787 family is clearly the way to go in that class.

It's success was based on it's great efficiencies that were essential during those times when fuel prices rocketed and air travel demand was on the increase. It was put against the MD-11 and A340, a tri jet and a quad, who were not able to offer the economics that a twin widebody of equal size could offer. ETOPS was already established making the MD-11 obsolete, and the range and payload that the 777 offered with just two engines, was something that the A340 could not compete with. The 777-300ER added more fuel to the fire, and became the automatic replacement for those airlines that operated the 747-400 who didn't want to down size to the 200ER and who wanted similar payload and range to the 747-400. And with that, the 777-300ER made the A340-500/600 obsolete as well. The added bonus has been it's success as a freighter, and might possibly continue that trend when the 200/ 300BCF comes to market. I'm not sure if the -9 or -8 (if they decided to bring it out again), will be as successful as the earlier models, but it will most certainly keep the 777 brand alive. Also, some might even say that the 777 was the last "real" Boeing aircraft to be made before MCD was absorbed, and before the board room decided to build quantity rather than quality.

Maybe on a short hop of a 3 or 4 hour daylight flight, but don’t think I will ever do anything longer or overnight. Now if the B777 was as wide as a B747 that would be a whole other story. Personally, I will look for flights operating on a B767, B787, A330, A350, would even consider a B757 over a high density B777. That’s just IHMO. 👍✌️🍻

The point is, Airbus in 1980s was still a much smaller manufacturer that couldn't take risks, tso they built both A330 and A340 to cater different needs. In fact the only major difference between them are the engines. MD simply lacked the fund to make a twinjet, after multiple major DC-10 incidents.
