I don’t think Rafael will invest to increase its production line. I believe this is the last major order they will get. Once US open up F35 to other ( when they have G6 jet) than any other jet will face the same problem. Look at F16. This is the true reality. I will be shocked if Rafael can break 500 jets. If none of Europe want it and almost everyone want F35 seal the faith. If Greece can effort they will get all the F35. I don’t think European can produce G6 jet because they can’t even produce a g5 jet. So far 1000 F35. 2500 in ordered. 150 jet per year. Will continue to produce in the next 30-50 years. Based on technical reviews I've read, Rafale is in fact a very capable aircraft and can fill all needed roles as well. Being old does not mean being outdated: on the contrary, sophisticated systems need time and money to iron out all the kinks. F-35's history is filled with kinks and the design process has been very torturous. Also, the political argument cuts both ways. I am Finnish, and we basically got the F-35 to get closer ties with the Americans. Not a bad thing as such, of course, but something to consider.

Canada just blew that twin engine theory in terms of a large country away with the decision to buy 88 F-35s. @@Chuck_Hooks fair point. @@potriut7570 Respect your points. However, I should also point out that politics works against and for F-35s even within the same country. About three years ago, a German Luftwaffe chief was fired because of his public preference for the F-35. That is not what German political leadership wanted to hear so he was canned. Now, Putin's invasion has suddenly lit a fire under German political leadership to buy 35 F-35s with an eye toward the B-61 role. Politics cuts both ways, for and against, as circumstances change. Rafale is a fine aircraft. But hundreds of F-35Bs alone are going to be operating on at least 18 US amphibs/F-35B carriers, the two UK carriers, the Italian carrier and the two upcoming Japanese F-35B carriers. All European F-35As will automatically network with this huge number of F-35Bs at sea. That is a monster Allied force multiplier. Rafale will never be able to operate at those kinds of numbers at sea. And I didn't even mention Allied networking with F-35Cs off the supercarriers.

@@Chuck_Hooks True, true and true. Communication and informations is one (if not) the greatest force multipliers, one look at Ukraine is enough to see it. I just wish the F35 program did not loose long term affordability and ease of maintenance along the way to cutting edge technology.
@Chuck_Hooks2 жыл бұрын
@@potriut7570 I can't concede the cost point in part because it is hard for all of us to see beyond just the parochial military needs of each individual country. F-35s are built to be able to automatically plug in to hundreds of sea and land- based F-35s no matter which country actually owns them. Which in turn vastly increases the security of individual countries that operate F-35s. I can't imagine a scenario where Norway alone gets into a serious war that wouldn't get the serious attention of its fellow NATO members and thus bring in hundreds of European and US F-35A,B and Cs to assist. The closest we have seen of something like that in memory was the Falklands war and that was very unique in that NATO was not involved or needed to be. So F-35s are bought to deal with a monster war with Russia or, in the Pacific, with China, which is why Japan is converting two helicopter carriers into F-35B carriers and South Korea is building a new carrier just for its F-35Bs. So in a real sense Norway doesn't just own 52 F-35s. It functionally "owns" hundreds of sea and land-based F-35s that all share battlespace information with each other, 4th generation aircraft and Allied commanders on the ground in real-time. That is what an Alliance is for, to pool and leverage everyone's resources to increase each countries' individual security. What does all that cost? A lot. But it seems to me everyone is getting a lot. Even though we all grumble at the cost in peacetime, we all forget cost if we really need to go to war as an Alliance. Putin's invasion reminds of that reality which is why Canada and Germany have both turned on a dime and are now buying F-35s. .

The f35 is a complicated fighter. It's expensive to run and maintain. Also it requires special crews and getting spare parts can be hard. The baggage that comes with the US doesn't help. You just have to hand it to France, they had their fare share of disagreements with NATO due to their pride as a former colonial superpower; they couldn’t stand being de-ranked to a second-rate power in the US-UK dominated alliance, and they even partially withdrew from NATO at one point realizing they couldn’t be in charge or at least on an equal footing with them. They highly valued their military independence, and that’s why they decided to go about developing their own fighters and other military technology instead of participating in joint ventures with other countries. And for one country to develop such a great feat of technology and engineering on their own, even as developed and rich as France is, is very commendable to say the least.

Cooperation is desired in France with other European countries. But it is very difficult, each country is afraid of losing skills, the French have specific needs, for example they want an aircraft capable of doing everything. Air supremacy, ground attack, long range (overseas), marine version... Other countries don't need planes able to do so many things, they just want planes to protect their territory... I think that the day when there will be a solution for that, is when the European Union will have a shared geopolitics. I'm afraid that the FCAS program will know the same end as the previous airplane cooperation programs.

It makes programs incredibily complicated and expansive and only a Behemoth like the US can do something like that with some "return on investment" (for the F35 we will need a decade or two to see if it was a success or a waste). For a "standard" country developing a single modern fighter is already very hard (in term of money at least), spending money for variants you won't even use and accept reduced performances and/or cost efficiency for what you need because the airframe need to accomodates others needs is hard to accept... Especially when cooperation comes with many other problems (ex: France loves to sell military weapons to everyone, Germany hate it, which is a problem if they produce parts of the plane... There is two main point lacking in this video, likely because its USA centered view : First. The ITAR regulation is a weapon for commercial war. Nothing more. When Israel tried to sell its second hand F-16 to Croatia USA refused...in order to allow general dynamics to propose it's own. One word also on the "west aligned" point of view, where France wouldn't care to sell to country not align with that. It's not that simple, France will sell to FRENCH ALIGNED INTEREST, which are not necessarily the one of the USA, who sometimes think that is own POV is the one of the west. Second. The F-35 is a newborn, comparable to the Rafale in the early 2000's. It is still plague with major conception defaults, which we are not developing here, but who will take years to solve. In 20 years the F-35 will be a combat proven plane's, will all its capabilities and (let's hope for the one who bought it) its problems resolve. It is what the Rafale is today, a multi role fighter that can approximately do...anything, and be good at every one of them, while not always being the best compared to specialized fighter. In the end, it's a pretty good video, with what I would call a "big brother bias" forgetting a little quickly that aeronautical tech speaking, Europe (and France) are just among the best in the world, no shy of the US one. Just coping with less military funding.

Some in Switzerland make the same argument. If war planes were to be used, it is more likely that it would be together with the French than against. And with the growing likelihood that the next US president will turn his back on NATO, selecting a plane that you can't use without their approval is a strange decision. The answer to the puzzle is : the US have been threatening European countries to buy F-35.

So now its weapons loadout can be both russian and NATO. Ballsy move by the malaysians. Too bad most of the fleet has been grounded, though. They need new engines. The deal was already in place i think, but the current ukraine-russia conflict kinda threw a wrench into that plan. Indefinite pending. Ah well.. engine swap i guess😂 Edit: apparently the malaysian airforce (and in guessing the malaysian military in general, coz we do operate alot of russian equipment, as well as NATO equipment) was prepared for this sort of nonsense beforehand. Theyve localized alot of the parts and subconned other parts to foreign contractors outside russia. OEM, u might say. You forgot one of the most crucial points : the Rafale is multirole, meaning it can do all types of job for a fighter, and it does everything well. Even when it comes to air to air engagement, the Rafale has beaten the Eurofighter in international competitions. It is also suited for carrier operations in its naval version (also explaining why India chose it for its navy). And it is considered a 4.5th generation fighter thanks to its low radar signature compared to other 4th generation aircrafts. All in all, you have a reasonably expensive aircraft, which can do everything well, can be operated on aircraft carriers, has some stealth capability, is cheap to operate (lower fuel consumption and lower maintenance cost overall than F-35 for example), and does not suffer from diplomatic threat from its seller (France).

An F-22 original without any upgrades would be pretty much equal to a Rafale F4 you would think.... the F22 computers and avionics would be a bit out of date now and its stealth cant be that good now it was designed in the 90s just after the Rafle

One important point is also that when rafale was in competition with US aircraft, even if rafale was "first" in term of efficiency, the "political" aspect make the rafale lose the game,ie: in south Korea :Hereunder an article from 2013: South Korea has acquired 60 F-15s from Boeing since 2002, against the Rafale, which was declared the winner after technical and operational evaluations. Seoul had to change the rules of the game under pressure from Washington by including a political parameter. The South Koreans now want to acquire 60 other combat aircraft by 2021. The decision to relaunch the call for tenders should certainly benefit Lockheed Martin's F-35, disqualified solely because of its price in the initial procedure. And in general, what Washington wants in the land of the Morning Calm is often gospel...

The US still think ithasa monopoly. Here isthe thing though, France hasalways been a great power and very much aspire to remain one. France is the one Westeen country that always does things on its own. France did not sign nuclear agreements and developped their nukes alone, to keep control. France makes point to buy its own weapons and maintain one of the higest military budget in Europe. France also is just behind the US in global interventions, they simply are much more discrete about it. When the US left much of the Middle East not long ago, China though it would have free reign and be the new power to hold sway there, well China forgot France and France is the new police in the Middle East, not China. In short, France is making a shot at getting back on top. It has been a secondary power since the 1970's and that is longer than ever before, they are not happy about it and they just got an opportunity to get their spot back on the world stage. French influence in Africa and the Middle East is rapidly growing and it also seeks to replace Germany as the big guy in the EU. France keeps pushing for an European army, so that the EU stops relying in the US and more on them, as the next strongest military power and weapon manufacturer in the West.

For the EU it is important that the Rafale chalks up extra sales. While we are in NATO, the USA has proven to not always be a reliable partner, strongarming us into ventures we didn't really ask for. As such, the current reality is strategically not a bad one. We have F-35s being delivered, keeping us on the right side of the USA (phasing out the F-16s, some of which can move to the Ukraine ... something the USA is not very eager to do). We have the Eurofighter, which is a joint venture between the EU countries with aerospace experience, improving much needed EU cooperation. And we have the Rafale, which is a France only product, the sales of which creates some extra allies which the USA would not consider in the same way. Also, since Sweden joined NATO, there's the Gripen. As long as the EU is not a 'United States of Europe', this kind of position with different platforms seems to be the best. Not the cheapest, for reasons of scale. But the most adaptable to changing political realities. So go, la France! Vous êtes notre village Gaulois qui résiste à l’envahisseur.

Rafale is cheaper though in some ways less capable. It can help augment the flying hours and serve as a bomb truck in less hostile airspace. Plus all the benefits above. @jacquesdahlet7207 Жыл бұрын
Rafale should be considered a 5th gen aircraft. It meets all requirements of 5gen except for the passive « stealth » aspect (stealth from its shape). However, many people assume stealth aircraft are literally invisible. This is not true. They are invisible in a specific radar frequency band (typically high frequencies), AND only for radar systems whose emitter and receptor are in the same location. Reason why all aircraft, even 5th gen, include some « active » stealth capabilities. Rafale has never bet on « passive » shape stealth, and as a result has a very good « active » stealth capability. What is « active » stealth? The aircraft detects the radar emissions, and jam them. The result is that the radar can either assume an erroneous echo and disregard it, or in most cases detect many confused echos in a different location than the real position of the aircraft. The enemy knows something is coming, but doesn’t really know from where, or how many aircraft are coming (could be 1, could be 10). Finally, radar capabilities do improve over time, and some believe this will one day make « passive » stealth aircraft more or less obsolete. On top of that, Rafale is quite manœuvrable and has very good nap-of-the-earth capabilities, making it more stealthy just from flying low enough.

@DC2022 Жыл бұрын
@@TheStephaneAdam I agree for most of the case. But for ATLC 2009 this wasn't the case. During this exercise, Rafale was the star of the show and US couldn't let that happen. Remember this was the hard "anything but Dassault" time (still is btw but less brutal... most of the time) so they send F-22 for a "friendly match, nothing serious, just fun". And so it happened. US said they won by a nice margin but french bird managed a draw mainly because the F-22 had external fuel tanks. French team who was silent at the moment had enough and leaked some pictures of the F-22 during the fight, showing there was NO external tank. Then US kept bragging and lying, so this time a video leaked, showing how "well" a F-22 managed to fight against a Rafale and what you can see is a goose doing its best but failing to evade the bird of prey in its 6 with one lock with missile and one lock with gun. The really sovereign states will choose freely. So, unless they have a very advanced threat in volume or technology, they will buy the Rafale. Flight hour is 10 times cheaper than on an American plane, as well as maintenance because the plane was designed to be repaired anywhere with great ease, and even fuel consumption costs less because the plane has incredible efficiency considering the military load it can carry in relation to its own size! it is cheap, and the french do not practise economic blackmail like americans....and moreover the buyer remains sovereign, it is not the case with the F35 for example where lockheed Martin, with one clic can make any F35 in the world unuseable if its use does not suit American desires....with the Rafale, you do what you want because there is not an American part on this plane! Turkey was kicked out of the F-35 program after Turkey bought the S-400 air defence systems from Russia. India was also ruled out becoz India bought advanced Russian air defence systems. In fact the US has inflicted many casualties during its military operations, and that is also a form of human rights violations. The Rafale is currently the best and most versatile combat aircraft in existence and it can go on any type of aircraft carrier, CATOBAR or Ski Jump. It can do all existing missions and it has twin engines. It has data fusion and an IRST. Not to mention it has an AESA active antenna radar and the best air-to-air missile in the world, the meteor with the largest no escape zone currently in existence. It has an extremely low radar cross section and a very low altitude flight capability unique in the world. It's quite a competitive beast. Frankly apart from the F 22 I don't see what plane can compete with it honestly.
@jackmclane1826 Жыл бұрын
The only thing it has an edge on the Eurofighter is carrier capability. Which was why France decided to leave the team and built the rafale. The rest is very similar to the EF with in most categories the EF being a tiny edge better. Range, thrust, climb rate, ... Both carry pretty much the same weapons. The Rafale has slightly less radar cross section, but cannot compete with the insanely powerful electronic warfare suite of the EF, that not many people talk about. That is a class of its own.
@sonikUk Жыл бұрын
@@jackmclane1826 I absolutely do not agree. We should not compare the AF and the Rafale because they have no relationship, one is designed to be an air-to-air fighter and the other is a multi-purpose one that does all the missions, that is the enormous fundamental difference. The Rafale is a multi-purpose aircraft, capable of carrying out air-to-air, air-sea and air-to-ground missions, while the Eurofighter Typhoon focuses mainly on air-to-air missions. The Rafale also has nuclear capabilities, allowing it to carry nuclear weapons. Even if the AF has had improvements for air to ground, it is especially efficient in air to air combat and sky policing. This huge difference means that the Rafale can do more things and this is extremely important for the capabilities of the plane. On the characteristics they have a lot of differences, 3 very important points which make the difference on the missions in use that can be carried out: _the Af uses a radar and mechanical antenna and still does not have a radar with an active antenna except for export, and this happened very recently while the Rafale has had it for years and has improved its version. _The Af has no stealth element; it was designed for interception, with no constraints on discretion, unlike the Rafale which benefits from several elements of passive discretion, a low radar equivalent surface and, above all, active and tactical stealth. _Finally the AF does not have the capacity for automatic terrain following at very low altitude to be able to do the Dead and the Sead, it is only the Mirage 2000 and the Rafale which have this unique capacity in the world. This ability is very important, either you use this one or full stealth to be able to enter enemy territory first. The AF has neither, so this is yet another mission that the Af cannot fulfill. Here I focused only on the missions and you can see that the AF is efficient in air air but for the rest there is no point in comparing it. So no, the only difference is not landing on aircraft carriers as you said, the differences are fundamental in the missions carried out. If you want to compare the Rafale do it with the F35 but not with an air-to-air fighter, it will make more sense. Ps: the equipment is different too, in addition to having a greater number of hardpoints and a greater range (3700 km for Rafale and 2900km for the Af), the Rafale carries infrared MICA missiles which have exactly the same range as electromagnetic air-air missiles which is unique in the world. The Mica is available in two versions depending on the installed seeker, electromagnetic (EM) for all-weather interception or infrared (IR). I remind you that the Rafale can reach 6 on him with bombs as well.
@jackmclane1826 Жыл бұрын
@@sonikUk Look at the stats, the design philosophy and anything else. You can clearly see that both planes are siblings, if you are not blind. The same french team of designers who started working on the Eurofighter continued working on the Rafale after France decided to do their own thing. And they created a very capable plane, for sure. But what you list up are just details that both teams have decided differently for the roles intended by the makers. Like what radar to put in. The EF team cheaped out there. You are right that the Rafale is ready equipped to do a higher variety workload. But that is not a fundamental reason what one can and the other could not do. Not in such closely related designs. The terrain follower attack plane for UK and Germany is still the Tornado. It uses a tracking radar. By standard the EF does not. It could though, if someone orders it. The Rafale is also not a stealth craft. The RCS is just a tiny bit smaller than that of the EF. Detection range with typical X/Kx band radars is the identical within 100m. Range is also pretty identical. The EF has a slightly higher ferry range with almost identical fuel capacity in ferry config. For combat range the Rafale is listed a bit higher but in different missions. There is no reason why it should be higher in a comparable profile. Both systems decided on using a different short range missile system. That is it. Adapting the Mica to the EF or the Iris to the Rafale would LITERALLY just take minutes per plane. So, in the end I have to repeat myself: The only fundamental role that the EF is not capable to fulfill any time soon if needed, is carrier operation. And landing would be quite easy to retrofit. It is the take off that is painful.

@@chitoyk8o554You're delusional the f-22 is indeed one of the best if not the best plane in the world but he's only for usa usage and have never been sold to another country. It's just irrelevant to include with the f-35. And finally the only reason why the f-35 is succesful on sales is the geopolitical might of the usa; overall it's a bad and expensive plane who even collect datas from the buyers to give them back to the usa.

Indonesia : Tries to buy F-35s USA : No, but here's our F-15EXs France : Here, may we recommend the Rafale? Indonesia : **We'll take em all** In honesty, Indonesian air force is in a serious need of modernization. Their F-16C Block 15s are showing their age now, and if their neighbors are having an airforce that's almost 4x larger with individually more advanced planes, even if they're friendly, something is still very wrong. As a bonus Indonesia also badly needs ASM capabilities.

Every nation with international trade is beholden to America. It's America that has secured international trade since WW2. The vast majority of the world would wish for a return of American hegemony if we ever decide on a isolationist policy again. regarding Croatian decision to buy Rafale is failed contract to buy ex-Israeli F-16 Barak, that deal was blocked by the USA, as the US did not allow them to be sold with Israeli upgrades... so Croatia had to call for the new tender. In that tender Israeli F-16 had to be stripped from all Israeli upgrades and if Croatia decided again to go for Barak, they should be upgraded in Lockheed Martin, so that was not an option as it would cost more than it was offered from Israel in the first place. Sweden offer, Grippen, which is in a bit outdated C/D variants, without AESA radar, and that planes were to expensive if we compare what they are offering, and by capabilities, they can not compare with others. USA offered the newly built F-16 block 70/72 that was way out of the price range Croatia was willing to pay. These aircrafts would cost at least double than Rafale If the USA was able to offer some used F-16 block 50/52 it would cost maybe 800mil USD Croatia would buy it for sure. Rafale was the best offer in that Tender as we are getting in a reasonable price (1 billion €) aircraft that could be exploited for next 30 years, capabilities are comparable to F-16 block 70/72 that was offered for a double price, and in the NATO only F-35 could be considered as the more advanced aircraft. Basically, Rafale is on the first look an overkill for small Croatia, especially because it is twin-engine aircraft, and more expensive for exploitation, but we ordered only 12 planes and it would work perfectly if we gonna use all RAfales potential, such as AAM Meteor AASM Hammer and exocet missles. The decision to buy Rafale was also political because the Croatian prime minister is very pro-European politician and is not among those who also try to build strong relationships with the USA at the same time, he was also serving as a diplomat in France for years before he become prime minister, and is all about European integration, so he is trying to be close to Macron and Ursula von der Leyen with a distance from the USA, that was also part of the decision

Because Rafale has as many weapons as the F-35 and France is willing to sell its weapons to anyone who is willing to pay and serves the French interests. The F-35 is a better aircraft on paper, but the reality on the ground marks the Rafale as one of the best (if not the best), non-5th Generation aircraft.
