Got exactly this model - 116200, roulette date, railroad track white dial, smooth bezel and oyster band - its just so beautiful and perfectly balanced. The larger versions leave too much of free space on the dial appearing rather flat compared to the perfect 36mm.

The datejust has been my dream Rolex for several years and finally I rewarded myself with one this year after saving for it for 5 years and I was lucky to get the 2018 datejust 41 with the upgraded 3235 caliber (70 hours reserve). Simply majestic.

Ismael Bonal good for you, you’ll love it. I did the same for the 2017 Airking and I love it, I too want a Datejust. This white dial is beautiful but I’m torn between this and the blue dial.

@@gizmothewestie9078 I too wanted the blue dial, but couldn't find it and got my 2nd best choice, the black dial. I've seen the blue dial showcased and it is amazing, especially when you move the watch under light. No other color does that like the blue dial.

The most versatile most watch, it goes with suit, jeans or jogging for running. It goes with all occasions, my favourite everyday watch is the two tone DJ 36mm on a leather strap.
@h1115516 жыл бұрын
A 34 mm Datejust on a jubilee bracelet was my first serious watch acquisition made in 1978. This watch is still going strong in 2018 and still has a nice balance between ornamentalism and function. Other than a few routine services spread over long intervals during my 40 years of ownership, the performance of the Datejust has been flawless. For the first nine years of ownership, the Datejust was my only watch and was worn during all my waking hours. I then started a journey into higher horology which led me past Rolex to Piaget, Parmagiani and Habring2 among others. The Datejust gets very little wrist time because I have ten other watches but I still enjoy wearing it. Our son is a junior in college and I intend to gift it to him when he graduates as a start in the ownership of a finely conceived and crafted mechanical watch. I have never purchased another Rolex and am somewhat taken aback by the manic enthusiasm for Rolex stainless steel pieces which deprives many fine watches and watch brands from the attention they deserve. That said, my Rolex Datejust has been a constant in my life for 40 years and will soon be passed on to our son for yet another long period. I can think of no other physical object in my life which has accompanied me on the journey from youth to Medicare beneficiary and which remains fully capable of daily service and use. While I have not purchased another Rolex, I did purchase a post-2014 Tudor Fastrider chronograph in stainless steel which is both wonderfully crafted and very reasonably priced. I now look to the Tudor line as I once looked to the Rolex line: a resource to purchase well made watches of fine quality which represent good long term value. Despite my interest in other watch brands, I would state unequivocally that I would purchase a 39mm Oyster Perpetual on a steel bracelet with a blue dial and no date function new from an AD for $5700 if I had to live with just one watch for the rest of my life. The Datejust would be my second choice if I had to live with just one watch for the rest of my life only because I have come full circle on the subject of even basic complications and see that less is more from the stand point of watch and bracelet aesthetics. The Oyster Perpetual is a more outstanding expression of the essence of Rolex than even the Datejust. The Datejust is among the most copied of watches over the course of time, with or without gold accents. Nobody copies the Oyster Perpetual. This is not because the OP is homely but rather because it is because the OP is more refined than the Datejust aesthetically and much more difficult to copy because of fewer and simpler design elements. Best regards.

My favorite DateJust story was when I met an old man in a bar wearing one. I complemented the watch and asked him how long he had worn this watch. He told me he got it when he was 19 and wore the watch all throughout the Vietnam War up until the present. It really changed my view of the DateJust from just a boring businessman’s watch to a watch with some toughness and grit.
@RustyLongPipe4 жыл бұрын
Similar story here. One day when I was a kid there was a random knock on the door. It was one of my dads army comrades from Vietnam. I still remember every word of that conversation when he presented me with my dads Datejust and explained the story behind it all. “This watch I got here was first purchased by your great-grandfather during the first World War. It was bought in a little general store in Knoxville, Tennessee. Made by Rolex. Up till then people just carried pocket watches. It was bought by private Doughboy Ernie Coolidge on the day he set sail for Paris. It was your great-grandfather’s war watch and he wore it every day he was in that war. When he had done his duty, he went home to your great-grandmother, took the watch off, put it an old coffee can, and in that can it stayed until your granddad Dane Coolidge was called upon by his country to go overseas and fight the Germans once again. This time they called it World War II. Your great-grandfather gave this watch to your granddad for good luck. Unfortunately, Dane’s luck wasn’t as good as his old man’s. Dane was a Marine and he was killed, along with the other Marines at the battle of Wake Island. Your granddad was facing death, he knew it. None of those boys had any illusions about ever leaving that island alive. So three days before the Japanese took the island, your granddad asked a gunner on an Air Force transporter, name of Winocki, a man he had never met before in his life, to deliver to his infant son, who he’d never seen in the flesh, his Datejust. Three days later, your granddad was dead. But Winocki kept his word. After the war was over, he paid a visit to your grandmother, delivering to your infant father, his dad’s Datejust. This watch was on your daddy’s wrist when he was shot down over Hanoi. He was captured, put in a Vietnamese prison camp. He knew if the gooks ever saw the watch it’d be confiscated, taken away. The way your dad looked at it, that Datejust was your birthright. He’d be damned if any slopes were gonna put their greasy yellow hands on his boy’s birthright. So he hid it in the one place he knew he could hide something. His ass. Five long years, he wore this DJ36 up his ass. Then he died of dysentery, he gave me the watch. I hid this uncomfortable hunk of metal up my ass two years. Then, after seven years, I was sent home to my family. And now, little man, I give the watch to you”.

I am not a Rolex fan boy. I love my Omega Seamaster Professional and it looks awesome for the price of USD4,800. But I enjoy your narratives on the Rolex watches. Although I don't really understand why people would want to buy a dress watch that is quite expensive just so that they could have the name Rolex on it. Rolex did have a great history behind the watches they have today. Their watches are being sought after mainly by the Chinese and the rest of the world just follow up on it. Design wise, I love Grand Seiko dress watches. Precision with beautiful textured dials. Sports watches, I love Omega. Moon watch, Omega. Chronograph, I love Rolex Daytona and latest Grey Side of the moon watch. To each person their preferences. Great video and very interesting facts. Keep up the good work. 👍

Kinda repeating a post, but since I enjoy many of the watches you mentioned, I wanted to share my experience with you too. I used to knock Rolex quite a bit, for reasons I can only now attribute to a specific preconceived notion of what a Rolex was, in both the hardware itself and in what it said about someone. I own a IWC Big Pilot, JLC reverso, Speedmaster moonwatch, a PAM 422 and a GS Snowflake spring drive (the latter of which turned out to be my unexpected favorite)...I finally tried on a Datejust 41 with a fluted Bezel and black dial. I have now owned it for 6 months and outside of the Snowflake, it's the best mechanical watch I own, definitely the best purely mechanical from a time keeping perspective. All of my other(non-snowflake) watches, while surely fun, do not keep good time. The chromalight lume actually lasts longer and looks better (to me) than the others that have Super luminova, with only PAM422 really competing here if not surpassing it. The oyster bracelet, is the best and most comfortable SS bracelet I've ever experienced. Closest I've felt to anything feeling as good was a former Colleague's SS AP Royal Oak bracelet. Been timing it for 6 months and it's still at +1 seconds. I did not expect that at all, and perhaps mine is an exception, who knows. I've heard of "don't knock it 'til you try it" and while I never thought it would apply here, I stand corrected. At least from the perspective that I thought I could never enjoy, want or even objectively like a Rolex. This is not expected to change your opinion, or anyone else's, but I did want to share my objective experience having been a huge detractor of the brand previously based on purely preconceived notions and nothing more. Are there more fun, creative, even better finished watches? Absolutely. I will likely still pick up some of those. However, I now understand the response, "but they aren't a Rolex."
