For those who want the answer right away: scientists discovered that the females of these flesh eating fly species only mate once in their lifetime. So if they mate with sterilized male flies, they won't have any offspring. So they breed sterilized male flies to crash fly populations. A similar method is being used to crash mosquito populations (the motive being that mosquitoes are vectors for diseases like malaria and yellow fever), using genetically modified male mosquitoes that are either sterile, or the offspring are "daughterless", and only produce males, which in turn also produce daughterless offspring.

Flies are used to control fire ants as well. A certain fly injects the larva only into fire ants to reproduce. The larva moves to the head of the ant and releases a chemical that causes the ants head to pop off and it eats the head to grow bigger. They say that without fire ants, the flies just die off. Fire ants and those flies are both from South America.....they just studied the predator of fire ants and determined it was safe to bring them here to help reduce the numbers. The modern version of this idea, is the Gene Drive, created using CRISPR-CAS 9 . They dropped millions of imported earwigs from somewhere in Asia into south Ontario where the moths were creating havoc on millions of trees.
