As an Asian American. I've gotten racial slurs. When we were in Chicago my neighborhood had two scadinavian boys who told my mom to go back to wherever she came from. My mom responded by saying same to you, because it was clear that those two boys were not 100% American either.
@carkod3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I would understand those slurs in other countries like Europe, but it's funny they say it in America where 99% people are foreigners. The only natives are the native Americans! But I think this is more about the virus, but again it's funny because such a Virus can come from anywhere, next one could be Indonesia or Brazil, where they also have live animal markets! Also unlike America, many countries don't refer "Asian-Americans" as Asians, they basically call everyone Chinese. I grew up in Spain, and they call all Koreans, Japanese and Chinese, Chinese. Which I think in part it's correct, but the right term would be Eastern Asian. And I think this hate is not towards all Asians but Eastern Asians

it’s an annoying question because it’s like they’re automatically assuming we aren’t from here just because of the way we look. it feeds into the perpetual foreigner stereotype, and only helps to make asian americans feel more like outsiders and feel like they’ll never be seen as a “true american.” edit: to clarify, “Where are you from?” is usually not the question that is annoying. It’s the “But where are you really from?” that sometimes follows it when they aren’t satisfied with your answer 🙃

@@matchamochi520 appreciate the input and want to again state that i just want to better understand the thinking. but is not assuming the asker is trying to alienate you through the question a bit prejudice in itself? it's just if i am asked "where are you from" in hong kong, i'm not gonna say "hong kong" leading to the inevitable next question because i know what the question really meant to begin with, while at the same time thinking they are judging me for not looking or sounding like a local normally does

@@MCHuang it’s just that in some situations like this, even when you’re as specific as “Oh I’m from Austin, Texas.” They’ll keep at it and be like “No, but where are you really from?” It’s more about the phrasing of the question. Diana this message is a reply to you but not specifically to you and I'm not talking to you alone. We are not OK and are being invaded by a cancer, not foreigners (born in Europe myself), but the leftist mindset. America is under attack and Americans who are diseased by this cancer are the attackers on the ground, probably being controlled ultimately by the governing body in China, the CCP. BLM, ANTIFA, media, Hollywood, politicians, greedy corporatists and CEOs, all problems on a national if not global scale. However, one thing I've noticed over the years is that the less we watch the news the less 'racist' we are. What does that mean? If you live in the States you will see for the most part everyone respects each other, in that respect we are like most of the rest of the world, but the media just hammers us 24/7 with divisively framed stories that are not always 100% factual, and help fuel racial divide. There are many examples of this but what we do not see often enough is the backtracking and corrections, these are done very quietly in the middle of the night, the Washington Post and NY Times are major offenders here. Changing subjects: I've lived and worked in a handful of countries around the world, currently live in Kuwait. Let me tell you that if you think Americans are more racist than everyone else in the world you are uninformed. As a Caucasian of European decent I see extreme racism in this country (Kuwait) and it's not too much different from other countries I've been to in SE Asia, Africa has major problems also but is it racism when people of the same color have been brutally killing each other for centuries? Two things of note about America is we have easier access to firearms and a less structured society that doesn't teach or expect respect of others like many other countries, so some people fall through the cracks of my respect statement above. Also, media will latch onto certain incidents that will help their bottom line, political beliefs, and paint a picture. With no respect to those involved. Just had my first cup of coffee and it has me going already, I'll leave it at that. Just know that America IS a great place to grow up and live, otherwise we wouldn't have a crisis at the border with those who risk death, rape, kidnapping, and robbery to run away from their own countries.

@@kaliimc I agree with some points, mainly that media has played a HUGE role in furthering anti Asian sentiment. @@keenetz2648 I think it has to do with the fact that Asians are considered a 'model minority' - a label which has often been used to criticize other minorities for their alleged shortcomings. It's not that strange that one oppressed group hates another also oppressed one. Historical example: During the occupation of Eastern Europe by the German Army many Slavs who were also considered subhuman collaborated with the Nazis and helped them to capture Jews, confiscate their property and deport them to concentration camps. They had basically the same prejudice against them, namely that Jews were by far too successful, rich and influential, but didn't deserve it. So they did the dirty work for the Germans, although they also suffered extremely harsh treatment by the Nazis. [Disclaimer: The holocaust is historically singular.]

ONE POINT that MUST be made: Republicans are NOT all "racist" and Democrats are far from perfect regarding "race relations" in the USA. I am sick and tired of Democrat virtue-signaling and claims of color-blindness. The FACT is there is only ONE race. The Human Race. But there are many ethnicities and people groups of every skin color. The RACISM that Asian-Americans learn to deal with is "Other-ism" by being considered the perpetual foreigner. Always an outsider. Even though the history of Asians in the USA is genuinely the story of America. Asian laborers built the railroads. They built American cities and towns. Asian-Americans gave their blood, sweat, and tears to the USA. Asians even gave their "last full measure of devotion" by sacrificing their lives in times of war for America. These are FACTS that go over the heads of racist bigots. And the racists are NOT all Republicans! There are plenty of ignorant bigots who vote Democrat. A huge part of prejudice and racism is simple ignorance. That can be cured via education. The hardcore racists, who are not ignorant, they are the bigger problem.

What kind of education would cure racism? The racist people who govern our society are the most educated. They attended the best universities and law schools.
