Honestly, international trophies don't count as much as G/A. 2019 Messi was out in SFs, 2014 Ronaldo was knocked out in Group stage, 2012 Iniesta was player of Tournament, 2011 Suarez was Copa MVP, 2010 Sneijder, Xavi, Iniesta, 2008 Xavi was Player of Tournament. Only 2018 Modric and 2016 Ronaldo, possibly 2015 Messi were awarded because of international performance

Messi should win the award for his individual success as well as his team's success in 2020/21 season yes Barca didn't do good last season but it was Messi who helped them to finish 3rd in the la liga and guided them to the copa del rey title and scored 2 goals in that final and finished the season as the top goalscorer in la liga with 30 goals plus he ended the season with 38 goals and 14 assists in 47 games and most importantly won the copa america with his country finished the tournament as the best player and top scorer and top assister of the tournament and last but not the least helped Argentina to qualify for next year's world cup with 5 games to spare so with all due respect to the other contender for balon I don't think any one can come close to him in terms of individual and team success

Unluckily Messi needs to adapt with his new club & unluckily Lewandoski plays for poland. But if Poland were as good as Argentina that does not garantee a Copa or Euro cup. Because this was Argentina's best year & Messi's one of the best year with national team after many heartbreaks. Ballon d'Or lost all credibility a long time ago when Messi won ahead of VVD just for being top scorer in Spain when VVD had the greatest defensive statistic of all time, where not a single player in Premier League or Champions League had dribbled past him he won the Champions League and got to the final of the Nations League. If Messi sneezes he will win the Ballon d'Or. I don't agree with Lewandowski winning the Ballon d'Or because it is just too easy to score in the Bundesliga but he is a better winner than Messi. The bias of these awards towards Latin Southern European players is getting ridiculous. Mendy has the best goalkeeping stats of any keeper in Europe in Premier League and Champions League for over a season and half and he wasn't even short-listed because he is a Black keeper who plays for African team. Salah is the true best player in the world, but he has no chance of winning because he is African and plays for an English team because the journalists are bribed by sports clubs and sports manufacturers to either Messi or Ronaldo or any Real Madrid or Barcelona player who has an exceptional season. That Barcelona player got the golden boy despite Barcelona having a terrible season and Saka getting further than him in the Euros. Lewandowski should win the dubai d ore. No international trophy or ucl trophy. As a striker, his role is to score goals. If he didn't score that will be really concerning. But there is a catch here man. France football changes their eligibility criteria as per their will. Sometimes it’s goal contributions when their favorite players from feeding teams who get prioritized and sometimes it’s the “trophies” that you gotta win. It’s mostly according to their own comfort. They’ll do anything to make it not available for a German player or a player from that league. It’s historically known. Watch them give it to Salah or Benz even tho Lewa is on the pace to out match his own record next year even if bayern gets a treble.

I feel Messi should get it because the collective achievements are also important when it comes to Balon dOr. Lewandowski won nothing significant at collective level while Messi won Copa America and performed brilliantly. Both Lewandowski and Messi had an average UCL campaign. Lewandowski has better scoring stats but Messi has much better stats than him when it comes to assists and all other aspects of the game. It’s really tough but Messi performance in Copa America gives him an edge.
