I don’t think it’s an unpopular opinion. My respect for him has really been dying. You know what’s crazy I’ve never liked the concept of HYBE but I felt maybe 🤔 I should try and trust him. But I didn’t like how idols was being thrown in the trash 🗑️ like the one who debuted with Les and Leo trainee group. Don’t get me started on Gfriend. But this nonsense with NJ is the last straw. I have to be honest with myself. I’ve liked BTS songs less since 2020 and after and I HATE this dropping of the K in K-pop nonsense. This man is pure ego and lacks vision.

I think that’s part of the problem though, calling it a “craze.” Companies want longevity, not to be some novelty act for foreigners. They want mainstream appeal so that if the kpop “craze” ever dies off, they can appeal to a larger niche than just kpop fans. So It’s not really idiotic. Many of these large companies want global appeal or to at least expand beyond Korea / kpop’s typical audience for bigger profits. Keep in mind that “global appeal” doesn’t JUST mean the USA. I doubt that any of these groups will be able to remove the “k” from “kpop” though. It’s just so different from traditional pop that it kinda deserves its own genre. Some companies are still trying to do this nonetheless, but only time will tell how successful that will be.

@@starsnoireart Global appeal DOES mean the USA...because the USA created the music industry and the US dollar is the most sought after in order to make some big money. The USA basically *is the music industry* ...It invented or revolutionized all the modern mediums that music has been sold on: Radio, Vinyls, Cassettes, CD's. It also invented the industry as we know it today, creating the first record labels, as well as the foundation for the trainee system from Motown that's used in South Korea today. There is a reason why US artists are played globally but you don't hear all other countries music played in the US like that. Kpop is a very rare exception because of it being a craze. Kpop will only appeal to kpop fans. That doesn't mean other people won't like it...they just won't buy it. That is what the Kpop industry doesn't understand about markets like the USA. A like on TikTok or a like on a KZbin video does not translate to album sales here. Only very niche k-pop fans will actually buy physical albums. The rest of the US audience just doesn't do that...they don't even do that for their own favorite artists. Streaming is king here and the music industry is currently changing very fast and some say for the better. K can't be removed from Kpop. It's called Korean Popular Music for a reason. But if you want to compare it to traditional pop...it really is the same: Groups, Costumes, Hair and Makeup, Choreography. I don't really see any differences other than time period so of course Kpop today will use today's popular culture.

@@soulanstreets222 I won’t deny that the USA is a massively influential market for music and the dollar is prime currency. I just think that the world is heading in a direction where in the near future that might not be the case. Many emerging economies are trying to break away from the dominance of the US dollar (think of things like the BRICS initiative), and in this day in age where you can establish a fanbase in any country on Earth and everything is becoming more global, an artist’s over-dependence on the American music market may decline. In the meantime, not every kpop group will be able to break into the US, but local markets still fall under the “global” umbrella and can bolster an artist’s career even if they never become a Blackpink or a BTS. There are plenty of Kpop artists who are doing perfectly well with mostly their domestic or local success. I’m thinking of talents like Jessica from SNSD and IU. I doubt that the US’ stake in the music industry will crumble any time soon even if substantial competition emerges. All it means is that artists will have more options. I like to think of Kpop the way I think of anime. Anime was once an extremely small niche too, but eventually it grew to become a global sensation. Maybe kpop will have similar influence in a couple decades and scale beyond its niche? EDIT: Also, I think the performance aspect of kpop is what makes it stand out from traditional pop which is why I don’t put them in the same category. I think if you showed someone a Katy Perry MV / performance and then showed them a BTS mv / performance they would be able to pick up on some differences.

And not everyone prefers US or US type music. Kpop can do fine without mainstream US audiences, and it's not going to work because BTS was an exception, as Hybe is already realising. Racist Americans wont be won over by foreigners making similar music to theirs, on the contrary.

The big news now is how extremely pissed off Seventeen fans are on twitter because they say Hybe who they claim is abusing Seventeen members presumed to use them as a shield to demonize Min Hee Jin when Hybe employees who produced Seventeen songs wrote petitions against her in court. I’m a fan of Kpop since 2009 and I’ve seen the slow evolution of the genre and it’s sad. We had a lot more diversity 10 years ago like groups debuted with clear concepts and genre and you had music for every tastes, you like mature woman with sexy concept ? They have it. You want cute and pure concept ? There is a group that caters to it. You like quirky and weird vibes ? It exists ! Then when Kpop really started to get global around 2015-2016 we started to get a change… the numbers of new groups debuting sky rocketed and the market was overflown… to get successful a group needed to get the concept right so they all debuted with what was in trend hence the overflow of girl crush GG… no cute and quirky groups anymore… And now they are starting to westernize Kpop… if we wanted to listen to western pop we would listen to English or American pop artists… Kpop was so fresh and wasn’t « tainted » like global pop (lyrics were pretty tamed compared to global pop) and it was fun. Now there is sometimes almost no difference between a pop artist and a Kpop artist, and maybe Kpop artists like the fact they can grow on the global market but they don’t bring anything new to the public by westernizing their music 😢 I’m sad Kpop is losing what made its identity.
