Why King Dedede is GREAT in Brawl, and how he changed in Project M

Dedede was pretty busted in Brawl, which I'm sure isn't the only thing that's busted in that game. However in P+ he did have an interesting turn of events...

I’ve always loved dedede as a character but never really played him much in smash until ultimate. I’ve always noticed a trend about dedede mains(and K. Rool mains too) is that they are VERY loyal to him, like almost head-scratchingly, why-would-you-play-him-he-sucks-lol loyal. I think it’s due to people just loving him as a character and no matter how badly he gets beat, just like in Kirby games, he always come back swinging (thanks to his weight and fall speed making killing him feel like moving a fridge up a flight of stairs lol).

Dedede's my favorite character in all of fiction, but even I have almost stopped playing him more than a couple times, but I guess I have too much of an emotional attachment to him to let that go. The big man's a genuine "Gigachad" in the lore after all.

I mean let’s be real… K Rool and Dedede are like the two characters that are mostly picked whenever free for alls happens. Like just spam your B moves, be a heavy so you don’t die easily… and that’s it. As opposed to K Rool who’s just the easiest character to perform Meteors with… Dedede’s combo game is pretty disgusting too

Dedede was one of my go-tos in Brawl as a kid (alongside Meta Knight I shit you not). Everybody I knew used Kirby and all those Kirbys did was try and inhale to use your power against you. So why not use the character that basically gives Kirby a worse (in my child brain) inhale? He also had 5 jumps and a ridiculously good recovery. He lived forever and his Final Smash was hilarious and deadly.

I just started playing Project+ coming from Ultimate with Dedede as my main and I instantly noticed how horrible he is compared to his Ultimate counterpart. I’m still figuring out how the character works but even then he would still be pretty bad compared to the other characters. Sometimes I do wish he got the Bowser treatment.

1:20 Those are throws, not grab releases. Ness/Lucas definitely do get screwed over by grab releases (notably by Marth), but not from Dedede. Dedede can chain grab Ness and Lucas, but not any worse than the ~70% of the case who get chain grabbed by him. DK really should've been your example here, as that's Dedede's easiest infinite. The DK vs DeDeDe matchup in Brawl is brutal. 5:10 Walls are rare in competitive Brawl and nobody plays on SMI. Why do you show that as your example? Wall infinites weren't the reason he was so good in that game.

After playing Ultimate Dedede for so long and looking back at Brawl and PM Dedede, I do feel like there is a solid middle ground between the three that will help him Immensely in PM Meta. Imagine if PM Dedede had his Gordos, D-tilt, and D-air from Ultimate, his B-air and F-tilt from Brawl, and keeping a major of PM's buffs minus the Waddle Dee Tech for obvious reasons. If these changes were made to him I think he'd be a lot more viable in the PM Meta, probably not top tier but more viable for sure.

I’m so glad I started playing PM I main G&W and ROB but I mainly played PMEX remix since I mained Sephiroth and Ridley in ultimate. Sephiroth has up air chains in PMEX I’m pretty sure he’s top 10 at the least

Dont be fooled by his tier list placement. PM Is a REALLY well balanced game. Even bottom tier characters can see competitive success at the highest level.

I still want to add that while he's considered bottom 2 on the current P+ tier list, he is still a "good" character overall. The difference between top tier and bottom tier in P+ is relatively small gap due to the dev's team very good balancing of the game's cast. Fashoomp, who was shown in the video, won a huge WA regional a couple years ago juuust before the quarantine/pandemic hit and he's still playing, very strong. You really can do good with anyone in this game. Could he still use some buffs here and there? I'm sure a couple wouldn't hurt or make the character "too toxic", but that's up for debate. We'll see what the dev team does next, but I think the game is in a pretty good spot right now as far as balancing goes.

I'd work on the clips you use when talking about some strong tools or strategies, like when you mention his grab infinite. Great music choice though. Btw do you have the file of that Norfair alt at 7:56? I don't know if it's just the camera tricking me but I may not have that stage.

@@anothenblue2630 Yup you are right. I use PMEX to record PM stuff because for some reason the graphics on max settings look really good in PMEX, and I have access to more stages and characters whatever. So lately I've been recording a lot of shots in there.

I hate to be the one to tell you honest but waddle toss has about 7 angles and two toss speeds/archs per angle. Waddle dashes do not have access to the different speeds though however.

64, melee, and brawl are honestly the coolest smash games there are, they all have weird jank and interesting mechanics that make each incredibly unique. Brawl isn’t that great but it’s weird meta and weird mechanics make it really intriguing

Honestly if they made dedede toss waddle dees directly in front of him instead of throwing and then re-inputting side b near them to throw he couldve been more interesting. Imagine waddle dees taking proectiles while he still had decent grab ranges. I think that would be enough to level him out some.

He throws the shrunk Moon into the air, which returns to normal size as it comes crashing down.

He would slow down time as several missiles spawn to home in on his location and if he gets a combo similar to bayonetta he would then ride one to the moon and bring it back, it would then work like a normal item but only he would be able to grab it and it would grow bigger overtime to allow him to hit nasty moon z drop combos until it despawns

How dare you diss the king of the show? No but like seriously Dedede isnt bad. I get the problems and some are majorly slow, but bro Dedede is one of the most fun characters to play as. Yeah his air speed is slow but bro, its a penguin who can straight up fly. Also hes the only character you can taunt online in ultimate. Dash attack is also a really good edgeguard, ruining recoveries well. A great recovery, can do some really cool setups with the gordos. Can kill opponents by crushing them with DEM CHEEKS, he poses like one of your french girls, and hehe funny penguin wit hammer make me go haha
