It's IGN... Larian cancelled the DLC because they never wanted DLC, lol. They're STILL working on BG3, but they're not charging their community. They love what they do, they love their fans, and they're rewarding us with FREE content. And guess what? They're STILL making bank! Look at Pathfinder; they launched a paid DLC, then released an entirely extra FREE DLC. THAT'S how you build a game AND a player base. Build VALUE into the game.
@cosmicgrim7963Ай бұрын
@williamyoung9401 hell, I just bought the game the other day and have about 32 hours into it. I was never that big into D&D and definitely hate turn base games. I now wished I bought this game when it first came out, so I could have enjoyed it with my friends who played it
@fudgin7778Ай бұрын
@@Murderlin7 As expected from IGN. My personal canon is that Larian was fed up of Hasbro's and WotC's interference and that they wanted to get their independence back. I'm curious to see their next project, hoping that they'll have the opportunity go back to their roots. It'll be a challenging turn to negotiate now that BG3's runaway success propelled them into the AAA developer category.
@admontblancАй бұрын
@@williamyoung9401 now that is a stretch. I pity anyone who takes all these public declarations literally when it comes to serious business. It's obvious that one of the parts wasn't satisfied with that arrangement, probably Larian themselves as they tend to not like it when IPs belonging to third parties start messing with the schedules of their own homegrown projects, and that is the actual reason they're so good at what they do.
@TheJadedJames2 ай бұрын
The smart move for LARIAN right now is to never touch D&D again and work on original IPs, leveraging their prestige from BG3 to just do whatever they want. Don't get trapped like Telltale into propping up other people's IP, become like pre-EA Bioware, taking the fame from making Knights of the Old Republic and using that to create Dragon Age and Mass Effect

The smart move would have been to have another team continue to work on BG3 while his other teams work on the new IP. There are millions of fans that just want more BG3 by doing this you are catering to two demographics, the fans that want to keep on with BG3 and the fans that want something new and fresh. Now you have clout now when your next game drops people are going to pick it up. Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2 were amazing games, but they were the springboard for BG3. Literally 10+ years of developing their own engine went into BG3. Is it good? HELL YES and you don't need to play the previous game to understand 3 but if you still want to try it, sure give it a go
@Batazen2 ай бұрын
@@gambello1195 yes all 3 games are great. I've beaten them all, but BG1-BG2 are 20+ year old games. The UI is dated and the old style of d&d is harder to understand. It's easier for new people to jump into 3 and if you're really curious, go back to 1. BG1-2 were very influential and successful crpgs. If you can handle the crunchiness of the old games, watch a video on them to learn more.

It's a good game, especially now that it's been patched multiple times since release. You also don't need to play BG1 or BG2 before playing BG3. The story in BG3 is a standalone, and you wouldn't really miss a lot if you didn't play the previous games. There are minor connections, of course, but those really won't affect your overall enjoyment of the game.

An important point made by Sven which is very rare nowadays not only in the videogame industry: "we want to continue doing what we like and make it sustainable". This is, in my opinion, a key to the success of Larian. They are not blindly chasing profit. They want to do what they like to do and doing so thinking sustainability of the business. Are there better objectives for a company? A company is the people that works there and having them happy working on things they like is the best achievement they can get. Making a DLC would probably give them much more money than not making it but it would not be fun for the people that work at the company because they feel BG3 is done. They don't blindly chase profit, they pivot based on what they want to do. How important is this philosophy in this world we're living in? Sven has my utmost respect.

One of the reasons that BG3 is so good is because of the passion that the folks at Larian had for the project. If they did DLC, it would've just been for the money.

BG3 almost complete because every single character has it own story and every character is playable, with 6 characters not included The Dark Urge the playing time can easily exceed 200+ hours play time just to go through all dialogues and unique story line. tbh I get the whole "our heart wasn't in it" bit, but I really wish they would do more with Baldur's Gate. It was such a gem and such a fun dive into the Forgotten Realms done right and we're not likely to get another like it. Whatever they make next will obviously be good, but whatever D&D/Forgotten Realms based video game we get next has a good chance of not being 1/10th as good as Baldur's Gate, and that's a bummer.

So...they ditched their critically successful project to work on smth...less stressful and demanding? But at the same time setting even higher standards? Fair enough, but that sounds like ditching not just a successful project, but a huge chunk of reputation. Great games are hardly ever easy projects. Overall a decision that is hard to understand from a business perspective.

Clearly they had issues with wotc but didn't just say it. It's baffling how they aren't doing any expansions for the game. Doing an expansion is 100% a surefire way to guarantee instant success without even reworking the engine, codes, etc. It's the easiest thing in the world to do to generate another 10 million copies sales. Also, them saying they're bruned out makes no sense. They previously stuck in the divinity world for 20 years. Now suddenly 6 years making their so called dream project is too much? Nah.
