I can't stand how LGBT movies are almost never allowed to have a happy ending. It shows how society at large views us, like a caricature of pitiable "others" who are destined to live less fulfilling and tragic lives. Essentially it's heteronormative society saying it doesn't want to see us on screen unless it's to see how we are mistreated by them.

@@LangkeeLongkee i think you’re reading it all wrong. that was never the intent of my comment. i said that because when it comes to lesbian relationships in the media there is almost ALWAYS a white woman involved. i hardly ever see two black women in a wlw relationship that is represented at all-unless it’s two side characters who barely get any screen time. don’t get me wrong, i’m not bashing interracial couples at all. ALL wlw relationships are beautiful and valid just as they are, regardless of race, and i have no problem with it. i just get tired of seeing the same thing over and over again. the media constantly makes it seem like black wlw relationships don’t exist and they keep whitewashing lesbianism. if you go ANYWHERE (especially on social media) and search “lesbian” you have to dig and dig and DIG to find black lesbians. as i said before i have no problem with it, because wlw representation means so much, but you can’t just represent one side of lesbianism and completely disregard another side. i want a main story, where black women fall in love with each other, like a normal wlw relationship. i want the story to follow them and their traumas, the same way happiest season did, the same way bly manor did. i don’t want them to just showcase them in love for a couple of seconds like every show or movie or book does. i want their story too, because not everyone grows up in the same community, and as a black woman i know how hard it is to be LGBTQ+ in the black community. just a different perspective would be nice.

UGHHHHH THANK YOU!! that's so real life too!! Im gay n a stud. Well the rumors at work states that I like her. WTF!! That hurts cause, first off, I dont!! I didn't kno, when u buy ur coworker lunch n here n there to help very strong hard working mom to give her a break.. would mean i like her!! Her schedule is very hectic n doesn't eat all day. 1st time eating of the day is at 8pm n she eats a cup of noodles soup. I can't let that happen. I can't and I won't. Her and I, felt comfortable enough to tell eachothers drama n problems. As coworkers we gotten close n more close cause I'd drop her home. Yes, her husband could of pick her up but I kno he needed his sleep. N when hubby picks her up, he brings thier 2 daughters with him.. meaning he has to wake em up like at midnight n ready to get to work by 1am. When I found that out. I just couldn't. So I told her, hey let your kids sleep.. and ill take you home n never even worry bout gas. Especially when the girls have school in the morning. When I do things, I do it all in the kindness of my heart n I never ask for gas money, ever. I don't expect anything in return!! I completely understand where they are coming cause that was me n my siblings. I get it . Before I had cut her off, everybody at work got into her head that I like her. damn, that hurts. Im being helpful in ways I can possibly help. I didn't ask her , I told her. Allow me to take you home n let your precious gems sleep (thats what she girls her girls). I'd give a hand to anyone and anybody. Im still hurt. Its like that quote "having a good heart, can put you in fucked up situation"

When I was 13 I bought a box set of Almodóvar's movies because they where in the art section and looked cool. I didn't read the description or anything. I watched a couple of movies about transexual women involved in sex work and lots of tragedy. Ever since I associate trans people with sadness and tragedy. I have since then watched a lot of trans people's channel's here in KZbin and it made me happy to realize that trans people lead healthy lives not a Greek tragedy.

you can't ignore the fact that if the movie i sbig budget then it also has to appeal to more than just the LGBT community . if a movie costs more thn 100 millions to make , foreign audiences will also be targeted , straight , foreign audiences .and that's where the issue lies . i don't know if you heard about that guy who attacked the netflix studio in Turkey because of a rumor that some turkish netflix show would have a gay character .allegedly ( not even confirmed) ,people literally got their forks and torches out, netflix had to cancel. without the international audience, a big budget LGBT movie has little chance of being made in Hollyood , wether the studio/director is pro lgbt or not

Someone wrote that they missed the days when black content wasn’t made aiming to explain black culture to white people. Same energy. We can/should exist without always having to cater to/appeal to/explain ourselves to another audience. It’s not about exclusivity, but representation. I’m white just to explain my perspective, but you can still understand the point of the movie even if you don’t understand/can’t relate to some of the actions the character takes in everyday life. But you still get the point of the movie, so they should really stop making shows explaining blackness bc you can see it in proper shows. The same applies with LGBTQ+ films.

Exactly what I thought. I mean I watched about 25 min of the movie and I couldn't continue cos I felt like I was wasting my time. It was weird, it was unfunny, the main character being in the closet as the primary theme of the movie, really? In 2021? I don't think they expected us LGBT+ community to find it funny as we struggle with it our whole lives and we also make jokes about it our whole lives. But ours are funny. Theirs aren't. The jokes, the plot and the characters weren't made for our appreciation. It's for straight audiences, so that they can feel nice and comfy, so they can then go and tell us "BUT THERE IS LGBT REPRESENTATION!!!1", so they can think they know LGBT+ people but simultaneously not feel threatened by anything new or unfamiliar.

My wife and I are always a little bummed that movies are never about the story line & the main characters just happen to be gay.... Its normally that the story line IS that they are non hetero. They can’t just have a healthy relationship, it’s always a hidden love affair, someone is married & unhappy so they basically “choose to be” non hetero as some sort of back up deal. 🤦🏻‍♀️🙄 Can we get a solid movie, with non hetero characters, that isn’t written strictly for hetero people, ANDDDD the characters sexual identity is not the whole plot of the movie. lol! Star Trek Discovery has openly gay doctor and his engineering husband, along with a non-binary supporting actor in the later series. If you're into sci-fi it's really well done and the diversity is spot on IMO (plus the doc and his husband make a great couple). I was somewhat shocked with She-Ra remake though.. It seemed that every almost every main character was non-hetro, and this series is aimed at young kids?? I put it on for my daughter (remembering the old He-Man and She-Ra series), and couldn't get over the overtones, it was too much after a while. Don't get me wrong, I've got several friends who are bi, gay or have undergone gender reassignment surgery & totally support theirs and any other person's lifestyle choice in that regard. For a cartoon series aimed squarely at young kids though, I think it seriously skewed the real-world demographics in favour for some "inclusiveness" tick-in-the-box and was to the point where it I felt it was almost pushed in your face throughout the last season especially. Toned down and handled like ST: Discovery, it'd have been gold (at least for me).

Everything is about making straight white people comfortable consuming and I'm over it. LGBTQIA+ characters and plots shouldn't be written with the overlying rule that it has to be palpable for Janet and John from suburbia. They can consume their stuff that makes them feel comfy. Closest I've come to feeling adequately represented was with Noah's Arc and that show was out when I was in high school! I feel like that is actually one of the big problems - usually predominantly by (or funded by) straight people. Young LGBTQ folks end up seeing those stories, characters, and dynamics and thinking that that is what the LGBTQ communities are all about. For me, coming from NYC where I was a gay pup, Pose and Saturday Church would have been fantastic to see as they more closely represented most of my peer group. Love seeing them now, but there was no such shows and films when I was a kid!

This movie was such a waste of time... I expected something lighthearted, not that deep but with the right amount of drama and a happy ending. But that was not drama that was outright ABUSE. I could not root for the characters I was just angry an bitter. Haunting of Bly Manor has been one of the most surprising satisfactory watch till now. The subtle wlw romantic storyline which wasn't the main storyline yet unfolded in parallel way showed the relationship as normal occurence rather than sensationalising it. Very balance portrayal imo.❤️

Season of Love is an LGBTQ film that came out late 2019. It was a way better holiday film than Happiest Season. Was released on Tello Films which didn’t help with people knowing about it. Liked that the characters were all adults in their mid to late 20s.

I was talking to someone about movies in the UK feeling like black stories need some type of proximity to whiteness to be valued or needs to be framed in a way the average white person would understand. This video really expanded on some of that discussion for me. Bad movies are allowed, as a straight person I know we make mediocre/shit stuff all the time. But still I wonder if the production of the movie was as diverse as the cast. I wonder sometimes if the target audience for these things are actually marginalised groups or in fact straight people. These movies can feel performative at times with the praise associated with making something like this overshadowing critique but I think you are right that there is no way one film targeted at a marginalised group can represent everyone..

@@sieekakhan6761 Yeah. It was so refreshing to be honest. There is one other piece of lgbt relationship that gives me the same emotion theirs did. It was in a korean drama and it was quite unexpected to be honest. There was really old writer who had the rights to his now dead friend's photography. A museum wanted to showcase them as they were unreleased pieces but the writer didn't want to. The two curators who visit him stay the night at the house the writer and photographer both had lived in and he overhears their conversation about a self photograph that the photographer had taken. It was a public piece. The female curator breaks down the photos concept with a lit of care and correctly states her theory, that the photographer is looking at someone and saying hello not goodbye. The Korean word for hello and goodbye is the same. But after his death others had incorrectly titled the photo goodbye. The writer is moved by this and shows them the room where all the unreleased photos are kept. They are all photos of the writer. And you can just tell how much the person who took them loved him. There were so many and he told them that he had known the photographer loved him and he had loved him too but the photographer was held back from confessing because of his father who was a military man. The writer regretted that he never told him that he loved him. Even though they lived together for so long and spent most of their life together. The woman tells him that the photographer knew. Anyone who looked at these photos can tell that you love the person behind the camera. Anyway they do end up doing the exhibition. I know that it's a sad story but for the country it's based in and because of the direction and dialogue and atmosphere of the whole episode I can't help but adore it. It was so raw and sweet and handled with so much care. Anyway sorry for the long comment. I just wanted to share it.

It's from a romance drama so there is a fair amount of romantic tension between the two leads too during the episode. If you wanna watch it you should. I love the drama itself. It got a bit too melodramatic at the end but it had one of the sweetest, most supportive, non toxic straight relationship I had ever seen in media. They actually communicate. The novelty. Anyway if you wanna check it out it's called Her Private Life. If you wanna check out the story I mentioned it's in episode 5 after about 47 minute mark. The drama had the most amount of lgbt support I had seen. Korean is still very conservative about all this unfortunately. The main character actually misunderstood the female lead and her best friend as a lesbian couple. And he tries to protect their secret and support them, which was very sweet. The misunderstanding wasn't done in a malicious way or to make fun of lgbt people. The lead thanks him for trying to help her and says whatever your reason maybe. And I really loved his response. He said - I didn't do it out of pity. It's nothing to pity anyway. This conversation actually happens when they are in the writer's house I think. Try the show out if you get the chance.

Everything you're saying is true. Even having LGBT people DIRECTING or writing for the movie does not always help. lol Sometimes it's just about having someone who is able to tell a good story that HAPPENS to have LGBT people in the lead. I know a lot of people hate how Harper treats Abbey but I thought it did a good job of showing what the pressures of a heteronormative world put on a queer person and how dangerous that can be. Overall I loved the movie. Most coming out movies tell one of two stories. The person who comes out either has a super supportive family and it ends happy or it’s a tragedy and they don’t accept the queer person. This movie shows you a variety of scenarios for people coming out. You have Dan levy’s character who’s thrown out of his home, you have Abby’s character who’s family reacts great, and then you have Harper which is somewhere in the middle. Just like my family harpers family takes it hard at first but then they eventually realize that their son or daughter is still the same person they’ve always been. Talking about tough topics in a way that keeps a movie upbeat and fun is NOT easy and yet this movie did it beautifully.

I just finished watching She-Ra and the representation of wlw relationships is wonderful. I full on sobbed the end. It has everything. Married people of colour and a non binary character who every character refers to as 'they' using the pronouns of their voice actor. This is a kids show, aye, but its executed so well and shows LBGTQI characters and relationships as healthy and happy, more so than and movie I've seen.
