Luigi, for me he went from lovable, to despicable, to favorite character. You see, I am the youngest of three, and one of my brothers used to play video games with me, including Mario Kart and Mario Party. He was always player 1 and I player 2. And what do you know, he picked Mario and I picked Luigi! That was the reason why I loved him so much as a kid. Then, when I got older and reached the most puberty stage of being a teenager, me and my brother didn't really game together anymore and I started to look differently at Luigi. I didn't really play as him as much as I used to. The connection of us both being Player 2 was gone. I began to see him for what he really was, a coward. Always screaming for Mario's help. Always whimpering and whining when he was doing something. Always shaking in his shoes when he had to face someone or something. I was just like "Grow a pair already, will ya!" This resulted in me choosing to play as Luigi for Super Smash Bros. Brawl and self-destructed 99 times. That's what you deserve, Luigi! 99 suicides (I was a prick!)! But then it hit me, Luigi isn't a coward. He may be afraid of some things, yes, but a coward? No. A coward is someone that won't face his fears, and what does Luigi in Luigi's Mansion? Exactly, facing his biggest fears, ghosts, because he wants to endure the dangerous road that lies ahead, so he can save his brother that he loves so much. Quoting lines from George R. R. Martin's novel A Game of Thrones: "Can a man still be brave when he's afraid?" "That's the only time a man can be brave." Mario isn't brave, because he has no fears to go up against (or at least they haven't been established yet). Luigi on the other hand shows his fears, lets his fears know he's afraid of them, yet he still fights them head on. _That_'s an act of bravery. And that's how Luigi became my favorite Mario character.

***** This is how I look at it. Mario *is* afraid, but he doesn't show. He is the older brother, so he probably doesn't want Luigi to see him afraid. I'm the youngest out of three myself, and I've always looked up to my siblings. My sister has always been the "perfect child" and has always done her homework without asking, and brother is in the twenties, lives in Copenhagen, has many friends and is the most awesome nerd I've ever known. I've always admired them yet been jealous on them because they had those things I never had. I felt like Luigi, a paletteswap, because I can do many things my siblings can, or at least can learn. It wasn't untill later I realised they do have their flaws as well. My sister easily gets stressed because she has so many requirements for herself and often thinks she has to be perfect, and my brother can sometimes for get his closests without even thinking about it. And they never showed me that as a kid for reasons that I'm not aware of, but I think they are around the same reason why Mario never shows his fears, especially in front of Luigi.

Pogohg That's how I look at Mario, too, but Mario has no character development, which is too bad. However, on the ohter hand that's a good thing, because I think all those spin-off franchises that Mario has wouldn't have worked as well as they did if Mario had a fully developed character.

In Luigi's Mansion, we can easily see he was scared. However, he fought through all of his fears and was laughing triumphant and joyous about the return of his brother. And how did he achieve this? By being one of the bravest characters in gaming history! A true coward would have run away.

I thought the same thing. Being kidnapped by Kamek and held hostage for days when he was a baby was probably traumatizing. Peach invited Mario instead of Luigi because she's in love with him. I'd be scared sh*tless if I were in a haunted house like that. Luigi may be a coward, but he still does what needs to be done. And lets not forget that he's got his own princess, Daisy. Though she definitely wears the pants in the relationship. Super Mario Bros 2 wasn't just a dream, Wart was hijacking the dream world.

My relationship I have with my brother is the same except I'm Mario but I'm younger. People say I'm a lot like Mario because I'm shorter than my brother but I'm stronger mentally (& physically). I've seen it argued before as well that being so outwardly scared of all this stuff, but continuing on anyway, actually makes Luigi braver than Mario. Which I agree with. To paraphrase some quote I read somewhere: Bravery doesn't mean you aren't afraid. True bravery is being afraid, but soldering on anyway in spite of that.

I think those were pretty great points! I've never seen anyone do any analysis into his character before (and all too many into Mario), so I'm happy to see this. :) *Except* for the "friend zone" point: 1) based on the example in which Peach shows her affection only towards Mario and not Luigi (friendly behavior for both), it doesn't hold because he is not shown to have unrequited feelings for her. 2) And if it was true, I don't see the connection between having unrequited affections and being frightful person. *3) Also, why should she show affection to both? I'm sure if she did, she'd look indecisive at best or slut-shamed at worst.

Luigi is one of the bravest Mario characters. Mario's fears might not bother him since he always jumps into action, but Luigi is as much of a hero and as brave as his bro by fighting back hid fears. Mario and Luigi are, I dare say, better together. I know how siblings work, I'm the first of three. Sure I do argue a lot (and I mean a LOT!) with my youngest brother, but he'll always be my lil' bro. We always compete for some things but that's the brothers game. Mario and Luigi most certainly have both an extra-strong bond and a healthy sibling rivalry. I can definitely see Mario and Luigi teasing each other about a goomba-headcount or stuff like that. Also, Luigi has nothing to fear about Peach's friendzone. Daisy looks like she's more fun in the first place.

Another way to see Luigi's high jump is that Mario is dreaming about Luigi finally being worry-free. And with all that weight off his shoulders (this is a dream, that can work like that), he can jump higher. But Mario still sees himself as the brother who is higher up on the food chain. Mario wants the control between the 2 brothers, that's why Luigi is such a slippery character. Mario is, in a way, controlling Luigi. Luigi has less control over himself, as well.

Luigi is prudent to the point of cowardice. His personality balances out Mario's headstrong personality. Granted, he was seriously traumatized by King Boo, but he went as far as taking him head on TWICE. After finally conquering his fear, he got some backbone but still remains prudent.

im so glad u made this i'm tired of everyone thinking of mario being some super dick head manic guy. He really isnt and that info in super mario bros 2 was very intersting because mario was indeed dreaming and mario is known for his amazing jumping abillity but in his dream he gave his younger brother the ability to jump higher then him seein that he does have high hopes for him. I know the mario power tennis thing was kinda weird but there brothers and bros do fight and get jealous with each other at times but they still love each other just look at the super mario saga games if luigi were to get ko'ed not only does mario show distress over the fact his brother got beat up but even during the attack he jumps over picks his brother up and will protect him that way even if it cost him taking dmg. ElswordKcINC That's looking at it objectively, however, saying he's insane for trying to kill a baby gorilla that is trying to rescue its father can also be seen as objective. Though, if we were to take a look - as MatPat did - at the Game & Watch title Circus, then we would see that Jumpman forced Donkey Kong to do dangerous stunts for his and the players amusement. We also see Mario (and to be fair, Luigi) punching Yoshi in the back of the head to force Yoshi to eat enemies on order in Super Mario World. In the same game it is also a given possibility to sacrifice the innocent creature to a bottomless pit to gain a few inches on a jump. Having a character that is insane isn't necessarily a negative thing, insanity doesn't have to, nor does it automatically mean evil. Regardless of his mental state, he actively does what we perceive to be the noble and heroic thing by the end of the game.

Monteryjackcheese umm the Yoshi thing is a game abusive mechanic for instant like wave dashing in super smash bros melee its just abusing the mechanic for a extra jump its not like the game was like yo if u push b + y Mario will legitly jump off Yoshi on purpose for extra height. The only bad thing I can say is the donkey kong jr thing where like I said before he did kidnap donkey kong and jr had to come and save his grandpapa even then JR was the same size as Mario and is a gorilla for gods sake its still bad but doesn't make him a psychopath or that would mean link is a psychopath for just standing outside cutting chickens all the pots in the world. i think declaring Mario, luigi , or jump man as mental and being in any abnormal mental state is just flawed like i said being a bad guy in one game vs a gorilla that was the same size as you. I don't think makes u insane. Tho that's just what i think and like u said in the end of the day his character shows he is indeed a kind person

Just to add to possible conversation, maybe Mario's dream symbolism indicates he thinks of Luigi as the better man - going on crazy adventures and getting himself hurt to help others, but without the typical rewards that Mario may sometimes associate with his adventures. Mario is constantly in the spotlight for his deeds, but not so much with Luigi. Maybe Mario feels Luigi has more integrity than himself?

Concerning the dream interpretation at the end... "Mario is dreaming of Luigi one day hopefully breaking free from living in Mario's shadow..." ...Or does think it has already happened? I think while everyone else disregards Luigi and gives Mario all the glory, Mario himself already holds Luigi in high regards. He looks up to him, and probably feels he is a braver better man than himself, knowing the struggle he's had to overcome throughout their life together. I'd like to think Mario actually looks to Luigi as a source of inspiration! I am indeed an oldest sibling, and it definitely means a lot to me to take care of my younger bros... But with that comes a lot of doubts and fear of not doing good enough. Think back to his dream... In Mario 2 Peach can fly and Toad can run and dig super fast... Mario is the only one who kinda has nothing special about him. He admires all of his friends! Peach, the shining heavenly angel who is sought after constantly by competing men, to Toad, the common man of the mushroom kingdom, who through constant victimization by Bowser's reign, has become a master at running and hiding!! XD (okay so that last one might be kinda derogatory... But still!) Mario probably suffers major inferiority complex... Which is why he takes every opportunity he can to appear like the big hero and hardened badass. It's all on the surface... He's really riddled with anxieties to a level that he might be interpreted as unfeeling... (Shout out to Game Theory, amirite? ;P)

Lets not forget the more meta answer here. In the old american DiC cartoon, Luigi was portrayed as the cowardly brother, this was really the first time he was ever depicted as such since at this point the mario bros personalities were non-existant. I think Luigi being portrayed as fearful in Luigis Mansion ( the first time this showed up in the games) is in fact the old cartoon from america having an influence on the "canon" portrayal of the character later in his existance ( I have been told that Peanut Butter Gamer has said the same thing but I am in fact older than PBG and came upon this conclusion on my own some time ago, but it's neat that others seem to recognize this as the beginnings)

What about partners in time? Baby Luigi wasn't scared of anything, canonically baby Luigi finished off the Shroob Queen as mentioned in Bowser's inside story, some events after the Shroob invasion must've traumatized Luigi, or, that's just the personality he developed as he grew up...

Great theory, I think this is even true story. But did anyone seen, that Luigi was not that scared in Luigi's Mansion 2/Dark Moon? In fact, he was happy to try save his bro again, however dark rooms are always Luigi's weakest spot. Also, Luigi can jump higher in modern games...So, Super Mario Bros. 2 was not dream???
