Manchester United are for sale. After years of conflict between supporters and owners, the Glazer Family, who have held majority control of the club since 2005, are searching for a buyer.
But why now, and what will happen next? How much are Manchester United worth? Who could afford to buy United?
Laurie Whitwell and Dan Sheldon explain, Craig Silcock illustrates.

@Darth Pepe yeah, there should be a law/restrictions for foreign owner compared to domestic owner. Such as limiting the "profit" they could take for themselves, how much % they could take and how much should be re-invested to the club, also maybe 40-60% of the club's ownership should be owned by local/domestic investor, etc.

The main reason which you missed. Utds debs are unhinged, that means that as interest rates increase the amount they have to pay each year goes up. It has gone up from £20m a year to £124m a year (just for the interest) in the last quarterly accounts. Debt has also increased. They need to sell. As the fed has raised interest rates again since those accounts were published.

I think the main stumbling block for any potential buyer is the need for massive infrastructure investment. I found when I went to Old Trafford 20 years ago it felt like a tired worn out stadium. Also Carrington apparently needs a chunk of money put into it to modernise. It looks like the purchasing of Liverpool would be the better investment for many/if not all potential buyers. I'd be surprised if Man Utd was sold for £4b+ and I wouldn't be surprised if the sale of the club takes a lot longer than anticipated.

the one thing that united has that liverpool doesn't quite have in the same level is the only thing the glazers did, which is the MASSIVE brand strength it has in Asia's new markets (India, China, so on)
@alexwood9075
@alexwood9075 Жыл бұрын
@@leo1fun while true what has that branding in the Asian and Middle eastern markets actually acheived apart from football tourism ? They hardly saw a bigger slice of the pie in terms of TV deals (rights sold by the Premier League as a whole) and appearance fee aside the tours wont generate that much extra revenue for the club (£15 million for a pre-season tour would probably equate to if the Premier League had given them an extra 6 home games in the season). While lack of champions league football has made it more difficult to attract high calibre players, at the same time the scouting and recruitment teams have made some terrible decisions which cant help the club finances that much (buying players for high transfer fees, and then selling them at a loss 6-12 months later)

'Project Big Picture' is literally what Madrid and Barca did to La Liga.. They dominate all the revenue and tv shares in spain then buy potential players from inferior clubs. This is the reason why traditional clubs like Athletic, Atletico, and Valencia refused to sell players to them unless they had pass their prime. Torres, D. Silva, Mata, and De Gea, Llorente were some of players who had to play abroad because in their contracts they couldn't be transfered to those 2 giants.

The fact you didn’t talk about the financial problems that the glazers have put Manchester United in is criminal because the revenue is not going up but they aren’t willing to invest in the clubs infrastructure because they don’t invest there own money and the debt they put the club on just for buying the club is absolutely insane with a percentage of it being paid off as a 16 percentage interest which is absolutely ridiculous interest percentage. So they want to sell before the value drops because if you go to old Trafford or see videos you would see a stadium that 18 years ago was one of the best stadiums and then they came in and never invested in the infrastructure of it which is absolutely heartbreaking to see so now the stadium is slowly deteriorating it’s just sad, I went to old Trafford in the first game of the season and they had broke seats at the top and I was told that has been like that for a long time had they fixed it costing max 100 pounds and leading to having one extra person on every single game which would lead to small profit. You should get the small things right and then it will lead to you getting the big things right. Can’t wait to see them gone will definitely try to go to old Trafford again when they sell because the atmosphere would be insane and if the right owner buys us it will be even more electrifying. @Darth Pepe You need to watch out better. There is a major Champions League restructuring announced May 2021 affecting 2024/25 onwards. Who do you think UEFA is in the hands of? The big clubs have been extorting the UEFA with the idea of breaking away and forming a super league since the mid-90s, this isn't something brand new and out of the blue. They've just not pushed the Overton window far enough and the public hasn't accepted it. But in a couple of years they'll achieve the same thing if they do it gradually enough.
@fernandoalvarez9613
@fernandoalvarez9613 Жыл бұрын
@Darth Pepe the backlash was predominantly British, the Spanish and Italians wanted it, especially since the difference in wealth between British and Continental Clubs is only growing. And with Barça, Juventus, and Inter fans not wanting their clubs to fade in relevance nor allow the EPL to become a super league in it if it itself (arguably the EPL is a Super League) then yes, i still think a European Tier/Division will happen.
@fernandoalvarez9613
@fernandoalvarez9613 Жыл бұрын
@Darth Pepe both of your reasons are why American inventors that had been in the EPL for a while are cashing out. You know why MLS clubs are worth as much as premiership clubs? Because they are safe from relegation while not saturating their local markets. The European Super League is inevitable and instead of fighting fans should be advocating for a version of it that will be a next step in tradition while reducing the minutes player have play. Turning the 3 Continental Tournaments Into a 3 tiered European League Pyramid. It would also level the playing field giving teams from smaller markets a level playing field with salary caps. Teams like Ajax, Benfica, and RS Belgrade would be real contenders again. The same way Green Bay and Pittsburgh stay on top in the NFL.
@RD-wg9em
@RD-wg9em Жыл бұрын
@Darth Pepe in terms of value sure, but the competitiveness of the league if massively overrated, especially if you watch sports outside of football (and even within football mind). That being said, what worries me is the instability of the pyramid, given the worthless financial controls, and loss making in the game. That type of financial instability is what encouraged the club owners to try to form the league in the first place. Solving that would go a long way to killing any attempt to resurrect the projects
@RD-wg9em
@RD-wg9em Жыл бұрын
@Darth Pepe no I mean competitiveness in terms of teams winning the title. A return of 7 winners in over 30 years is terrible, and only obfuscated by the fact that the other major European leagues are even worse. The pyramid was essential to their rationale. The threat of relegation, and financial dereliction that it would bring would prove to be catastrophic for clubs of their size, and guaranteeing revenue no only mitigates this, but would provide more means for those teams to invest in their teams on the field to protect from that threat even more so than they already have. It is greed, but greed that plays well with shareholders and investors, both present and future, unfortunately. I don’t disagree with the final conclusion though, they don’t care about football as a whole. They acted purely in their own self interest. My contention would be that the status quo may be preferable, but it isn’t good. Unless changes are made, I can see the clubs attempting to resurrect this project when they feel they can get away with it

Glazer's ManUtd purchase was the example of capitalism & Wall Street greed. Highly leveraged, squeezing out on regular basis and expect huge investment return when things seems to be over. Whoever take care of ManUtd next would need further significant investment in stadium, training ground, squad rebuild and a benemoth amount of debt left by Glazer themself. In no sensible way, buying ManUtd is a good investment beside "huge fanbase", which is a very vague idea & hard to quantify. What a terrible & evil way of doing business, I hope the worst for Glazers

It's fine for Chelsea, Man City and Newcastle to be owned by middle eastern states because they were never institutions with the pedigree of a Man Utd, Liverpool or Arsenal. These clubs are a part of England's history and should ideally be owned by an Englishman and represent the country's culture and fabric. Judging by my experience of British people, the owners may be slightly inept or lack the ruthlessness of a Qatar but a country should hold onto it's greatest institutions.

Any owner would probably have to invest another billion over the next 3years: first team(s), academy facilities, and stadium. Chelsea arguably had the last 2 at least in a better state at time of sale. So asking for over 3bn is a bit of a stretch imo.

Well the sale seems to be dragging on for a bit which has me slightly worried the Glazers could ruin yet another window. I also worry about the potential of someone buying a minority share and keeping them in charge. Although I’m sure that would go down like a led balloon. On the plus side, the Glazers are greedy. Which means they’re selling to the highest bidder and that could put us in range of the nation states. I think that would be perfect for us. Plus the anti-Glazer laws should work in our favour this time round 😂🤦🏾‍♂️. I know that our wage bill pushes us 16% over the FFP regulations but that’s a problem we’re already starting to solve by fixing the wage bill and hopefully the new buyers come with an army of sponsors to help us circumnavigate FFP. That way we can start spending the money sooner. Things might get worse before they get better but we’re always one step closer to finally getting rid of these clowns for good! 🤡

@ronanfitzpatrick1261
@ronanfitzpatrick1261 Жыл бұрын
Debt on the club is from the original purchase of club, with the exception of the last transfer window. United is the only football club to pay out dividends to it's owners (about 33m a year) which could have been put into paying down debt. Presumably next owner will be more typical, not take dividends and maybe even [holds breath] invest their own money in the club, again like typical owners. I mean if it's not fan owned there should be at least some silver lining to private ownership
@davec3974
@davec3974 Жыл бұрын
@@ronanfitzpatrick1261 it was my understanding that the club has steadily taken on more debt over time. Perhaps this was feasible in a low-interest environment when the business was growing, both of which seem to have come to an end for the timebeing. I suspect this is a major factor behind the Glazers' decision to sell. I'm a United fan and I hope we end up with owners that make a net contribution to the club's finances rather than taking money out. But if we get another group who view it as a business then that won't be the case.
@ronanfitzpatrick1261
@ronanfitzpatrick1261 Жыл бұрын
@@davec3974 No, it's more that the debt has been growing from what I've read, rather than additional loans for new stuff. Could be wrong but I think that's the situation based on what journalists & financial analysts have said in the past. Last window was noticeable as transfer required a loan
@davec3974
@davec3974 Жыл бұрын
@@ronanfitzpatrick1261 okay, got it. Then I suppose the plausibility of my theory depends on whether the interest on the loan used to purchase the club is fixed or variable. That said, high interest will also limit their ability to renovate / expand Old Trafford through debt, and such works are becoming increasingly essential. So I think it may be a factor to some degree.
