It is one of the strangest - and most fascinating - tales of my time in Dalmatia. A number of people on Hvar who were born in the desert in Egypt. And not just Hvar, but from the wider Dalmatian region. The unreal story of El Shatt in the Sinai desert.

Thank you for sharing this Paul. I showed this clip to my mum now in her 80s and a raft of memories & emotions came back. My mum, her sister & my grandmother were amongst a number of woman/children evacuated from Solta to Vis and made their way to Egypt. My grandfather fought with Tito's Partisans in Dalmatia and only saw his evacuated family after the war. Once again thank you for sharing this story ... 👍

What is mind boggling to me is how many of pur people don't know about this, it was a common knowledge in my time, even on some tv series, velo misto maybe, somewhere el shat has been mentioned, but it was in school curiculum, in your general encyclopedia and lexicon, on the tv calendar for decades too, i think we are doing some things wrong, this is not the first important thing from our history that went from common knowledge to curiosity..

This is really a fascinating story and it might just explain something I used to wonder about as a child. My grandparents had a house in Supetar on Brač and I spent a lot of time there as a child. It was in the early 80's. Our friendly neighbor was a man, in his sixties at that point, and he had a "strange" name. For me as a child living in Yugoslavia then, it was kind of unusual to have people, other then tourist, who were from somewhere else, but living there. Anyway I asked my grandparents about him and they said that he was an Egyptian and that he moved there with his family. I remember thinking back then, how an Egyptian ended up in Yugoslavia in those days... I never asked many questions but I found it fascinating. And now I saw your video... wow!

It could be related to this, but more likely that he studied in Croatia and stayed. Tito was the focal point for the Non-Alignment movement, and lots of students from all over the world were educated here, with a number staying. I'm from Rijeka, with some semi-distant family in the Šibenik area, had no idea about this. But what would darker features have to do with being born in Egypt? Unless they had mixed with the local population, I don't see how spending some years in Egypt would permanently change your skin tone.

Oh, people here on the Island during the summer have darker skin because of our hot Mediterranean climate. Like, we go from darker toned white people during the summer to normal white toned people during the winter. This maybe be the reason

Yes it is. I have from Jelsa, Hvar several relatives who born in desert, and because many mothers don’t have milk for babies, and have only blood, the children sucked blood because there was no milk and got a disease, which follows many of them all their lives, even today, and which has damaged their integrity over the years... they were born in a camp in El Shatt, on the Sinai Peninsula, in the Egyptian desert, even brought back home, for example, what they took with them, related to the conduct of the Holy Mass, right down to the tablecloth on which the Mass was conducted, was returned from El Shatto to Hvar, while, for example, in the northern littoral, in Rijeka, Grobnik above Rijeka, many born in Italian camps. My grandparents, the whole family was in all the camps in Italy, where some of my uncles died and some were born... Their house was burned to the ground twice, they only found the key, once by the fascists, once by the partisans... If my grandmother had not thrown the child, who was a few months old, into the hands of my grandfather, if they thought he was a single father, he would have been shot like almost all the men in the villages. The child died in the camp near Milan, in the town of Lodi. It was as if he was born to save my grandfather's life, and then my third uncle was born in the camp, while the first one passed away... one in the camp, and one before it...

Just to ad, the first officially appointed representative of the new Republic of Croatia, in Canada, Mr Dusan Bezic, was born on the island of Solta and as a young man had ended up in the El Shahat during the WWII. He wrote about it in his biographical book 'A Boy from Solta' or in croatian 'Soltanin na tankom ledu'. He was one of those who never returned home but went on globetrotting and eventually ending up in Canada. A great man and Croatian patriot Mr. Bezic had passed away in 2019.
