UPDATE: It's worth mentioning many of these memes reference the Mario & Luigi RPG series first released in 2003 and developed by AlphaDream, . Unfortunately, AlphaDream filed for bankruptcy in 2019, meaning it is unlikely the world will see another Mario & Luigi RPG published anytime soon.

For anyone who doesn’t know/ doesn’t remember, due to how every attack that isn’t scripted is dodgeable, it’s entirely possible to legitimately complete a Mario & Luigi game without taking damage even once. It all quite literally comes down to skill at dodging and counterattacking.

Besides scripted damage, it is also possible to do this in Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door purely with a great ability to time Super Guard. Not to mention stacking badges and/or using Boo Sheet and Vivian.

I think it’s important to mention this meme isn’t about Mario and Luigi as a whole, but specifically their appearance in the “Mario and Luigi” series of RPG games consisting of 5 different titles. The appeal of these games is the comedic gold in its dialogue and slapstick, the colorfully wacky Bros. Attacks, the surprisingly intense story, and ofc the most broken ability of all RPGs; the ability to move and dodge while the enemy is attacking. As a fan of these games I’m happy to see the fan base bring the series to more of a spotlight, and hope more people decided to pick them up because of it cause goddamn the Mario and Luigi RPGs are such a joy.

I find it particularly interesting and cool that the memes tend to focus on Mario and Luigi as they are in the Mario & Luigi RPG spinoff series. The original post most likely did that specifically so it would be the turn-based RPG versions of the Bros. going up against the most iconic turn-based RPG villain. Most of the jokes and edits are based on the attacks and mechanics from the gameplay of those games. It's interesting to see such a specific and fairly obscure area of Mario history get so much attention. It adds a layer to the meme for those more knowledgeable on the characters while those less familiar can still enjoy the base appeal of "lol, the goofy little characters destroy the scary serious character".

It probably gets a lot of attention because most of us had ds’s when we were little and I’m sure whoever had a DS has played ML bowsers inside story. So while those RPG’s are sorta obscure for today’s standards(especially since we haven’t gotten a fully original game in god knows how long) every one still remembers how good these games are…..and how insane Mario and Luigi’s feats are in those games aswell Also bowser 1 taps sephiroth lmao💀

"Most iconic turn-based RPG villain". That really struck me, as I never thought about it that way, is Sephiroth undoubtely the most iconic turn-based RPG villain? But there's no way is it? With so many iconic RPGs coming before and after FF7. I'm trying to think, Giovanni, Giygas/Porky, Lavos, but they don't hold a candle do they? Perhaps, they only one I could see being more iconic is Sans if considered a villain (and if Undertale considered a turn-based RPG), otherwise, there's Flowey, but I think even that one would fall short to Sephy.

It’s a weird thing in vs debates. How much do game mechanics matter? Because could Mario and Luigi counter any attack with Hammers? Could Sephiroth just avoid any attack and one shot anyone because of the flash back segment in the og FFVII? Could Mario and Luigi beat anyone with an infinite attack like magic mirrors (unless they have a spike on their head)?. Could Sephiroth bring anyone to 1hp and 1 mp with Heartless Angel? So many questions especially with how OP RPG characters get by the end of their games. A friend of mine said “Mario and Luigi when it turns out Supernova uses the same mechanics as Bowletta’s Bob-omb, the Shroobs’ Orbital Laser, and Midbus 1’s Diving Slam (these attacks are unable to be countered and instantly end the fight).” Would Sephiroth’s moves count like this or not? Idk it’s like as Stan Lee said “The winner is whoever the author decides would win”.

@@aaronjones6299 It depends because any Mario character has wildly inconsistent feats. In Mario Party 6 they can survive a Black Hole but in New Super Mario Bros 2 they die to being hit by a Goomba. They could beat Sephiroth or they could not depending on what feats you count for each character.

I think what made this meme grow so much is due to the in-game context of Mario AND Luigi Vs. Sephiroth, since you’re pitting characters who can accomplish seemingly incredible things like dodging and other cartoon logic BS against a more or less traditional RPG boss, one who is widely recognized as THAT RPG boss

LIMC did improper research and missed the mark by a vast margin this time. guess the M&L series will stay in obscurity... the meme isn't just about mario and luigi. it's about the two characters' specific incarnation from the M&L series, and how it's funny to visualize these two characters destroying a character like sephiroth with the gameplay quirks that come with that incarnation.

Most likely Dream Team. Luigi is extremely powerful in the dream world, being able to power up Mario and being able to create near infinite clones of himself. The god-like being mentioned by OP probably refers to the Zeekeeper, who is only the second-to-last giant boss in that game (Bowser being the final one). Sephiroth is already fucked against the bros, but he’s fucked on a whole different level if the bros can take the fight to the dream world, or if Luigi can just shift between real Luigi and Dreamy Luigi at will, considering a fight like this would most likely feature all combatants at full strength

Doubt it. Maybe if you take Mario and Luigi at their best it's possible, but nobody can seem to agree what their max AP is when considering things like outliers and anti feats. Some will argue that multiversal Dreamy Bowser is false, others argue the opposite. Some say it's an anti feat for Bowser and doesn't give M&L multiversal levels of power. Sephiroth SEEMS much more consistent from what I've seen. I'd say Sephiroth wins high diff. Dunno much about him but I've looked into two RT threads on Reddit which the comments praised for being good, so ig that means they were accurate

@@antasmunchiemario and Luigi, on their own not counting the other brother, can one shot the dark star by level 50. Their max level is 99. The dark star is an eldritch god that absorbs any and everything it can, sapping peoples power for itself, and completely vaporizing it's victims before absorbing them as well. The dark star can generate dimension destroying hurricans by exhaling with it's mouth open. These dudes are capable of stomping on it once and it would die, or hitting its energy ball attacks or whatever it throws at them with a hammer and completely stopping the attack in its tracks. Same goes for Bowser, he just needs to level up a bit and bam, it's dead.

One thing you didn't mention is that these memes most often use attacks from the spinoff series Mario & Luigi, which is very beloved by the few who have gotten to experience it (myself included). These games involve mechanics that allow Mario and Luigi to dodge or parry every enemy attack or perform crazy attacks of their own in minigame sequences, which of course means they could take no damage from Sephiroth's supernova attack or send it back at him. Unfortunately, the studio that makes Mario and Luigi has been bankrupt for a while now and the series can't be continued

I don't think you get the difference between Final Fantasy mechanics and Mario and Luigi mechanics. What you just said? That applies to EVERY attack in Final Fantasy 7, the whole "can't do anything" On the other hand, Mario and Luigi can counter or dodge every attack in their own games.

There's also some other funny things of note. If you consider the entire mario series, mario and luigi only go up in power, as in the galaxy games they are shown to withstand the gravitational force of a black hole as if it was regular gravity. Also most of these memes pull spesifically from the mario and luigi series, as specified in the original vs tweet, and that series of games has many silly hijinks in the characters' moves and attacks

I think this doesn't explain WHY people are bias towards Mario and Luigi in this fight. It is not because they are more recognizable, but because Mario and Luigi RPGs are batshit insane enough for them to blitz through Sephiroth. They can dodge, counterattack, use the Bros Attacks that make MASSIVE damage and more. Meanwhile, Sephiroth has no tools to fight, and when he does, they are easily dodgeable or countered.

You have no clue because Mario and Luigi will kick sephiroth's ass. The real reason is because Sephiroth cannot dodge attacks, while Mario and Luigi can by pressing A and B respectively at the right time.

I would disagree about Sephiroth not being that recognizable. I mean, in comparison to Mario, literally no character is comparatively up there. However FF7 is one of the most influential game series of all time. Hell, my MOM played that game when she was younger. She could remember half the characters names and that was like 20 years ago when she played. And she sometimes couldn't even remember the names of the characters in a movie we watched a week ago 🤣

Wasn't he the one to casually remove Zack from his timeline with a casual sword swing. Sephiroth was walking up to the sector 5 Church and Zack called him and Sephiroth said "Not you" and deported him from the timeline like an illegal immigrant. Zack was then transported out of reality where it's all white. This also happened again in the boss fight meaning Sephiroth's multiversal powers are consistent. Furthermore, he can affect the events of every FF7 universe, even bringing Gilgamesh to rebirth which he shouldn't be in. -SPACE TIME MANIPULATION (at the end of ff7r he transported cloud to the edge of creation saying "7seconds still the end" which indicates that Sephiroth stopped space and time seven seconds before the earth goes kaboom, this fact is also supported by tomura in ff7r Ultimania book) -PLOT MANIPULATION (even in ff7og Sephiroth manipulated cloud to giving him the black materia which is him controlling the narration and plot of the game plus the whispers also controls the plot of FF7r not letting events to happen differently to ff7og, whispers are controlled by Sephiroth) -REALITY MANIPULATION (via the edge of creation which we've never seen in ff7og indicating Sephiroth created an alternate universe himself, it is evident because of the stars and galaxy we can see in the background insideedge of creation, plus the final fight also happened in a different dimension Sephiroth created) -FURTHER REALITY MANIPULATION (the final fight in remake is literally a reality created by Sephiroth to test cloud's strength, the whole place where you see cloud slicing trains and Sephiroth throwing the shinra building at them is possible because Sephiroth has control over reality or create a pocket dimension) -FATE MANIPULATION (literally gave cloud visions of the future and past and made him defeat fate, which I remind you, he controls the whispers who are agents of fate) -PSYCHOLOGICAL MANIPULATION (manipulated cloud of course, even made him brain-dead for a month in ff7og which is why he's in wheelchair) -ILLUSION MANIPULATION (being able to affect people's minds and create fake illusions like Aizen) Even if you argue Sephiroth can only "travel to other universes" he knows how he's defeated in the original timeline which is why he's haunting cloud. Overall, Sephiroth wins via insane hax. The ring and the armour has nothing to suggest it can withstand multiversal hax or whatever. Also Sephiroth can summon armies if he chooses to via whispers.

I like how in a actual battle it just... "depends" like, is it FF7 mechanics?-sepheroth wins, is it FF7r mechanics?-M&L probably win due to their status as gag/toon characters, M&L mechanics?-he gets rolled, real fight?-Sepharoth has higher base scaling but there are 2 of them that are close to his power in "power scaling terms" so it'd be hard to truly say who wins in that, is it a battle like smash?-M&L win, Sepheroth wins the turn based ones 80% of the time due to sheer damage, while the Bros. Only win any matchup that lets them use their wacky gag powers, they are nuts in the scaling department but in a straight up fight? Nah

did you completely miss the fact that this meme is specifially based on mario and luigi's incarnation from the mario & luigi RPG series (and the quirks that come with that specific series, such as the cartoony bros attacks and the ability to dodge or deflect all enemy attacks), and not just the characters as a whole? like, not a single mention of that? :/// I'll be honest. I'm a fan of this channel, but this video has honestly disillusioned me a little. it really felt like so little effort went into researching for this particular video, and that is deeply upsetting. I love the mario & luigi series. I have very fond memories about it, and I feel it has gone criminally underappreciated and unnoticed over the years. and the moment it finally receives some internet attention, this guy fails to research for more than 3 minutes before making a video about it. and the result is this half-assed excuse of a "lesson" that somehow fails to address what the meme is even about, and instead pulls up some bs about fanbase size and popularity, which has nothing to do with the meme whatsoever, and proceeds to go on a spiel about how video game and meme culture frequently cross over, as if that isn't blatantly obvious and redundant. none of this actually explains why the meme exists, why it's funny, and why it resonates with so many people. my point is: this video isn't a good look, LIMC. I hope LIMC sees this comment. I don't intend to hate. in fact, I intend just the opposite. as a fan, I think (and know) that you can do better than this.
