The segment about "replication" was pretty eye opening. It's one of those things that explaining to a friend would get the response "well yeah, duh, seems obvious." But really getting down to the specifics like that and the science behind growth really helps it all make sense. By far my favorite part in the video.

It's crazy that these companies are now seen as "boring" in the current landscape of things.
@alohastateofmind35653 жыл бұрын
For real!
@carriermodulation3 жыл бұрын
It is part of the natural evolution of things, though. For example, GM and BA were once seen as perhaps even more high tech/space age than any current tech companies particularly when their machines just seemed like black magic compared to say horses or small propeller driven planes. Now almost everyone considers them not only boring but worse, perhaps lagging, even though in many ways they still deal in say more cutting edge materials/physics/control systems/signal processing than say Microsoft. I think one difference is that people cannot estimate the almost impenetrable moat of tens of millions of lines of mature code exercised by billions of active users, or now machine learning with huge datasets and millions of hours of training. That is going to be a new problem for newcomers to crack, even versus says the 1.5million parts that go into a Boeing 747 that once provided them a moat against companies that struggled to work with products with just hundreds of parts, and may give them an edge to break into new industries even when better informed players like college professors who have been studying new technologies for decades are building startups to compete. But who knows, it could all come crashing down as someone say provides a new way to train CNNs super easily and quickly, or new programming languages allow for new platforms to develop faster and somehow make up for much less usage and therefore telemetry and iterative feedback. For example, better CAD software, computer controlled engine and power trains, the work of companies like Denso and Bosch, and a few other factors allowed car companies to break into the industry way easier and destroyed GM and F's moats. I doubt it, though.

@@carriermodulation You pretty much countered your own viewpoint and you did it very well. That is exactly how MSFT, AAPL, GOOG and others are going to get clobbered in the future if they don't stay at the top of their game. Every major figure from Steve Jobs to Bill Gates to Zuckerberg etc. have said they're more afraid of a couple of hobby programmers than their competition. Linux and Git were made by one person and then expanded by a community of volunteers and they're the #1 software products of this planet. There's no such thing as a moat in software. There's just the time you have at the top until something or someone else comes along.
@carriermodulation3 жыл бұрын
@@postblitz I think your example proves the AAPL and MSFT moat. Linux has crushed it on server, and in game consoles, and the technology is there. Linux also drives android and many embedded consumer facing computers and meets their needs perfectly there. I use linux on my workstation every day. But has made no effect competing with MSFT or AAPL on the workstation or productivity in two decades. AAPL has struggled to compete with MSFT here in spite of huge investment with newer technology and arguable(at least higher paid) better development teams and some limited success in marketing.

Why does Microsoft slump after such a monster earnings report? My guess is that the stock is so crazy 'overvalued', nothing makes sense anymore. The price has gone up so much in the last couple of years, it hasn't kept pace with the fundamentals. The share price keeps going up..until it doesn't? No idea if/when that will happen, but I'm just holding onto my shares for now, seems too risky to buy at these levels. I'd rather look for those value buys in the Pharma sector. If you enter now and think short term, it's possible you will buy high. Think long term, you'll more likely to be ok. On top of that, you get dividends from MSFT, thus reinvesting it back into MSFT, and gain more "shares" for cheap if it goes lower. It's a win win if you go long with MSFT. Our UPS guy is a millionaire because he held and bought Apple since the first iPhone was released (it forms about 50% of his current portfolio I believe). Goes to show that within a span of about 13 or 14 years, you can make a lot of money if you hold, add and reinvest your money in good quality dividend stocks.

@@rudy_dstroys1821 I can confirm that long term thinking is key. I got my first shares through the MSFT employee stock option program back in 1989. So, yeah, it works. However, if one opened a position in MSFT on June 30th 2000, by Dec 30th 2013 he would look at an annual return of 0.6% for the past 13 years. Hardly a great investment. The company was doing great - but the investor that got in at the peak of the dotcom frenzy was not participating only because he bought a great company at a price that was to high. Valuation matters...

I hate to disagree with you, Joseph, but Naval isn't a genius. He's managed to package ideas many other, smarter people have come up with, then pass them off as his own. He can do this because he's rich. Young, impressionable people will always lap up anything rich people say. The guy is obviously smart, but a "genius"? No. At best, he's an opportunist. At worst, he's a peddler of fortune cookie wisdom.
