Emily Fletcher, one of the world's leading experts on meditation, will explain the differences between the two most popular styles of meditation, how they affect the brain differently and the impact of stress on performance. Emily will also lead you through a simple breathing technique and guided visualization that will help balance the right and left sides of the brain.
This talk will cover:
- How the fight or flight reaction can work for you or against you
- Why emotional intelligence is so important for not only personal happiness, but professional success and how anyone can learn it
- How to not let goals get in the way of success
About the Speaker:
Emily Fletcher is the founder of Ziva Meditation and the creator of zivaMIND, the first online meditation training program. She began her meditation training in Rishikesh, India and was inspired to become a meditation teacher after experiencing the profound physical and mental benefits it provided her during her 10-year career on Broadway, which included roles in Chicago, The Producers, A Chorus Line and many others.
With her high performance background and eight years of meditation experience, Emily is perfectly suited to teach busy people how to incorporate this simple and effective practice into their lives. Emily has taught meditation to a wide range of individuals and companies including Coca Cola, Relativity Media, Colbeck Capitol, Ogilvy & Mather and in public schools in the Bronx. She is a regular guest on Huffington Post LIVE and has been a speaker on the Dr. Lisa show and with Eckhart Tolle at the Global Alliance for Transformational Entertainment

I love all the comments about how she's "trying to sell something." This woman found her calling in life, and something she can share with the world that will benefit people's personal health as well as mental well-being. YES, I personally love that she's found a way to do that, AND make money, so she can enjoy her life in non-monastic world where people tend to need money for things like, say, rent. Monks get to hang out and be monks all day meditating, appreciating the beauty of emptiness, this woman is participating in the hardline world of business to help people grow into more balanced beings. And the other thing she shares is quite true, when you meditate, suddenly you feel great, and act from a place of abundance to help others. What if all the people in business started giving more of their time/energy/money away because they didn't feel they needed so much, sounds like a pretty positive change she's allowing by teaching meditation.

To Tim Ferguson...some folk will just refuse to embrace anything other than a negative/cynical mindset. I've come to realize the need to call someone out of their name or speak as unkindly as possible about another just for gp is common amongst that kind of person. Go for what you feel is right for you and continue on any quest that you have embarked upon to help others in any way that you can - forget they nay-sayers. They're quite simply energy vampires and their primary source of sustenance is the various forms of negativity which the Western culture/society provides in abundance. They're literally gorged at this point and I guess their spewing is a sign that they haven't loosened their belts for relief. Peace to you all.

Your Talk at times brought welcomed tears to my eyes. A college extra, a course on Transcendental Meditation back in the late 1960's or early 70's, has recently opened the door to allowing this 72+ year old retiree to not only fall fast asleep quickly but also frequently at a regular time each evening. For years being physically worn out after a busy day at work was my key to sleep. That's no longer an available option due to some sports related injuries. Now, when I close my eyes and my mind starts going over the days activities, challenges not met, lingering tasks, . . . switch to my mantra and like magic, the cares of the day quickly quiet away.

The study and practice of meditation needs to become an academic discipline. Bring it out of the retreat centres and into the labs and universities and we will see a real development in these techniques and theories, and remove a lot of the confusion from them.

The idea that assuming a giving stance on life will eventuate well-being does not account for the complex dynamic of our surrounding atmosphere and overall environment. As Gladwell explains in Outliers, there is a lot of luck and chance involved in success. Surrendering to the now might be the best way forward for some, but if one is thrown into a position of structural disenfranchisement - making minimum wage and saddled with debts - there is only so much you can give before burning out.

She is obviously a TM teacher (Transcendental Meditation,as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi). She just rebranded it as Ziva Meditation, or "self-induced transcendance". Her talk is peppered with buzzphrases from the TM scene.."20 minutes..twice a day", "natural law", "fourth state of consciousness". Her training began in Rishikesh, it says in the About tab, which is where the Maharishi was based. The meditation at the end is the TM method. Why doesn't she acknowledge who she learned this from? Is she trying to hide something? Something to think about.

people meditate for difference reasons. some are meditating to improve their academic performance. some because they want to improve their athletic performance. others are meditating to obtain health benefits. and some are pursuing enlightenment or mystical experiences, among other things. but if you think meditation is only about "digging it," (i.e., temporary feel good therapy) then you have a very narrow view of what meditation is and its potential applications.

Tm (or sth resembling it) what she (Emily Fletcher), teaches is dhyana (meaning transcending in sanskrit according to what I have heard from a famous tm teacher from the states). Yet again this is the state of yoga, the 4th state of consciousness. You can also transcend using the body using Asanas through hatha yoga (Most people practice ASSANAS as sport in the west). Dhyana again is a limb of the eight limbs of ashtanga what Patanjali wrote down in the yoga sutras. Again there is no buddha style meditation in itself there are 108 or 112 natural entrance points to transcend the object of meditation, whether the breath is being used, the body, or the sound. This is written down in the Vigyan Bhairav Tantra. The first 4 entrance points (techniques; which are more natural entrance points than techniques but whatever is said can be misunderstood and people like nowadays techniques to have the imagination of control haha) to transcend the object of meditation is the breath, the way the buddha reached enlightenment and Mahavira, hence it was called the buddha meditation and mindfulness (vipassana). To transcend a sound is also written in the book as a way to get into this meditative state. So no way is better than the other. However mindulness as it is being taught over the day to be more present slows down the thinking faculty rather then transcending the breath, which is harder for lots of people. The breath gets more subtle but people tend to hold on to it. There is no THIS VS THAT, just bullshit. The question is what is good for you now.

I meditate anapanasati 1hr every day and have for done years and must say Emily I disagree with you, anapanasati is the most difficult meditation to practice so people make excuses for why they should practice a more simple pleasurable meditation like thinking of nice things, only anapanasati ( mindfulness breath meditation ) grows new grey matter and the other types only make you feel good for a while verses growing new prefrontal cortex practicing anapanasati. Why I practice it is because six years ago I had extreme stress thrust upon me and it made me very ill, blood pressure 222/111, three small parts of my brain died through cerebral ischemia and I was losing my family becoming hateful to be around, I found anapanasati and now my life is fantastic, I have zero stress, laugh an awful lot and see things for what they are, I could not have done this with transcendental meditation although it suits some, I chose anapanasati because my situation was extreme and have to live with following my breath for 1hr a day, it saved my life.

Sounds like she took a course in Transcendental Meditation at some point, and read some books (she isn't a TM teacher however). What she teaches may have some value, but keep in mind there are now -- with the popularity of TM and other techniques growing -- many 'teachers' that have come up all over the world. Having tried many different techniques, I found that TM was the most effortless technique, but also the most profound. If you are interested in seeing what some of the benefits are, go to TM dot org. Or take a look at the David Lynch Foundation website. By the way, Jerry Seinfeld, who she mentions is one of millions of people that practice TM. She may be helpful in some way, but in my opinion, go with certified trained teachers of TM. Just one guys opinion here...

The American Heart Association did their own independent research and then announced that of all the meditation techniques they looked at, only TM significantly reduces high blood pressure. There are also meta-analyses of anxiety research, heart disease and drug/alcohol addictions, and they found TM to have an effect size twice as large as other techniques. The cost? It is a non-profit organization and a life-time of TM benefits costs what one would pay for a new couch, or a TV. The best bargain I have ever received by far! Take a look at the David Lynch Foundation website to see some of the remarkable benefits in schools, the military, for abused women and children, Native Americans, etc. The Lynch Foundation raises millions of dollars so that TM can be made available to the most under-served communities...

Happy30Too Hi there. I don't doubt that TM as a concept works in the way you describe. It just seems peculiar to me that the price is so high to learn a simple meditation technique that's already available for free.

+rustyfo1 Having seen over the last 30+ years probably hundreds of claims that TM is being taught from a book/Cassette/DVD/youtube etc. I suggest that: 1) Don't be fooled by that. Out of curiosity I've looked into many of those. They are not in any way similar to the practice of TM. 2) There is a reason that TM is taught in the way it is--with personal instruction from a teacher--four consecutive days of meetings--and a lifetime follow-up program. 3) The price of TM now in the US is apparently $960. For the benefits one receives this is astronomically inexpensive! The same as a new couch! The TM teachers I have met--in several different countries--are the most sincere and selfless people I have ever met. They are never rich by any standard. Check out the David Lynch Foundation website: they are raising money to make TM available to all who want it. The next event is titled: 'An Amazing Night of Comedy' featuring Louis CK, Russell Brand, Jim Gaffigan and Vanessa Sayer. The goal is to raise millions so that Vets all over America can learn TM and reduce the 23 suicides a day that everyone ignores! The TM movement is working in ways the government/political candidates aren't!

There's no actual damage proven from some of the major psychedelics, like psilocybin and ayahuasca. In fact much on the contrary.

GuaMaotama Buddha: First of all for those who believe she's doing this for the money Nope she already owns most of the people she lecturing if your in one of those companies then chances are you are already a part of the group and just needs to see if you got what it takes to take the partnership to a whole new open level, that's why she can laugh like that not only does it attracts attention for good or bad but keeps you engage which ultimately even if you find it annoying its a plus cause she got your attention she's in for this similar to what you liken as investors but only the community part. Still apparently tons of Russians are not susceptible for assimilation except thru media, film or entertainment. Don't know why but I highly doubt Trump can over come this reserve for the Russians. However she lacks the foundation on what real meditation really is, that's right folks the real power of the institution of the prime religions, First stuff is for high level meditation on the real scale No art involve 1.) very rare masters of breathing 2.) gifted physical yoga kung fu masters. Both of which are not relevant for normal people however the second aspect of meditation is Communal Social Education Nobody is immune to the institution of meditation because it is in this far superior than our bullshit system of Western Education where truly dumb people gets status which they do not deserve. Meditation is where master from all walks of the society the elders and builders if you will scrutinize individuals base on what skill level and position in society, Ancient Indian caste System before the White Man particularly the British scum came in is very meritorious, and even then the system despite being breed with white scum produced hybrids that are of high caliber and possibly even became integral if not overpowered the European Elite. The British language seem to have an Indian Slang to it. When you put everyone in a temple ground everybody conforms this is where the elders scrutinized individuals according to ability with two steps a.) Mantra and b.) body or scroll painting which was interpreted by its Buddhist neighbors as Calligraphy. Now I don't have to explain Mantra is aside from that it entails intelligence and leadership ability. Body or scroll painting translate to craftsmanship and when the two is combined it creates Engineering Prowess. That's right Chinese Communist Party reduce and limit the media sectors power of purse they need to stick to their people when it comes to mobile payment and not the rest of the population otherwise the 20,000 a year patent applications all over China instead of growing and later upgraded in quality with the mobile payment no one will bother innovating and applications will dwindle, In our next topic Warlords of China: The Foundations of Modern China! I still think you should stop laughing like that I laugh the way I do cause I have too, I can't breath deep enough while talking so I need to laugh still I don't have to put my nose to stop my breathing this is particularly long and can last for hours when done unconsciously sometimes when walk up it takes a couple of minutes for me to stop breathing thru one side of my nose. In our final topic why we age i can answer that with one sentence and a little bit of explanation but not much not my job basically meditation is simulating DREAMING MY DEAR!

the problem for me (with massive experience in both tripping and meditating) is that with psychedlics you tend to forget and lose the benefits quickly. mediation regularly is more like a walk in the morning mist, over time you are soaked in it. acid is more like a thunderstorm that goes away and you dry off.

You can't even die from taking too much LSD. You'll likely go insane (doses would have to be extremeeeeee), but you won't die. psyilocybin and DMT isn't harmful either, but ayahuasca is really unnecessary and actually damaging because you'll be purging out of both ends (yeah, don't do it. I'm speaking from experience, you don't need the ritual either). And DMT simply is the active ingredient in ayahuasca.

14:39 She talks about how nature doesn't make mistakes. This thesis is outright incorrect. Ok so sweet food tastes good right? And Nature doesn't make mistakes. I guess we all just start eating Candy all day since nature clearly tells us to do that. I think you all know that eating a lot of sugar causes health issues so...

She doesn't feel very present, she feels hyped up! If she meditates correctly, you would feel both "peace and passion" flowing out of her, pure inner-balance. Instead all I feel is her tense hyped up over caffeinated energy. Does she really practice what she preaches or is this a sales tactic? I am wondering.

There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death. Proverbs 16:25 I'm not commenting to be a jerk, but because I care if people are going the wrong way in life. If anyone tries to find TRUE peace, understanding, joy, love etc. apart from Jesus Christ, they will never find it. He says, "If you seek me with all your heart you will find me". Have you given God the full attention He deserves? After all, If He is who He says He is, He certainly deserves much, much more than just a passing glance. He deserves your full attention, but He won't force you. So, please add one more item to your checklist....you know, the one that lists the various avenues you might take to reach your destination of inner peace, etc.,.....Jesus. And please give Him the same attention you've given the other items on your list. I'm familiar with the checklist because I used to have one too.

"Rebranding meditation as a productivity tool." [vomits] What else would you expect from Google, a company that is eating your privacy, your ability to be alone, your ability to live for the sake of living, a company that tries, at its most fundamental level, to make money from everything and everyone without regard to the consequences for society, humans, or the physical world? I meditate and it's a wonderful thing to do, if you're willing to follow it where it leads you without an agenda. If you are trying be a more "efficient" "happier" cog in the corporate machine that is trashing the very possibility of life on earth, the very possibility of human meaning, then you can meditate all you want but you are still whoring yourself out to a destructive agenda, betraying the essence of humanity.

Do your research. of course the comments are controversial. the comments come from people for whom meditation is not a new idea or a new practice- who have practiced for much longer than emily or who have much more knowledge than emily about this practice she claims to be an expert on. if you do only a teeny bit of research you too will begin to ask a few questions. if only to understand WHY all of these T.M rebrands are echoing the EXACT same script.
