CAUTION ADVISED: this podcast contains swearing.
Do you believe that people’s values can change, or are they set in stone? Can you gain talent and intelligence through practice, or are they innate? Do you have a growth mindset or a fixed one?
My guest on this week’s show is convinced that change is available to all of us, at any time. Tom Bilyeu is a US entrepreneur who co-founded a billion-dollar nutrition company. His weekly KZbin show, Impact Theory, explores the mindset of the world’s highest achievers, to share the secrets of their success. And during this conversation, you’ll learn how to implement some of those yourself.
We talk about the importance of being a learner and how openness to criticism is, in fact, a superpower. We also discuss how to shift self-limiting beliefs. One of Tom’s mantras is: ‘only do and believe that which moves you towards your goal’ and he describes how you can use that to change your thinking around things like weight loss or fitness.
Tom and I delve into topics like nutrition and diet, although we do not necessarily share the same views - but that’s the beauty of a conversation like this, being open to debate. He has what he calls ‘strong convictions, loosely held’ and I love that as a description of a mind that’s always curious and open. As a doctor, I know different methods work for different people - and at different times. So health is a great example of why a fixed mindset isn’t helpful.
Tom’s motivation and passion for life is infectious. His mission is to help people live to their full potential and execute their dreams - I hope after listening to this chat you’ll want to start working towards yours.
NB this conversation was recorded in October 2019.

I remembered once my mentor said; "things you've thought will become things you say, things you've said will become things you do, things you've done will become your habits, and your habits will becoming yourself, so be careful by things you're thinking." And i always forget it.

There are several things that I love about you, Dr Chatterjee, as a host. One is the fact that you actually listen to the content of the answers of your guests and reply/respond based on that. Many interviewers simply have questions prepared and ‘re-ask’ a question that’s already been answered. Two is that you have the persona of a student - meaning always willing to learn, humility etc. Three is that you have your own beautiful experiences and ideas to share and you do so in such a loving, caring way. I’m a big fan! 👏 Ps: On the superficial side, you’re handsome and I love your voice. 😉

If you have any doubt about whether to watch this podcast or not: forget the doubt because this PODCAST IS A MUST! It reveals one of the main arteries of life: your mindset to create your own life. It’s tough to do but hey... who said it was going to be easy however privileged you are! Mind boggling interesting. I have been following T Bilyeu for years and now this super doctor: great team !!! (Not too sure if the ‘Diet’ in title reflects the whole content of podcast... I think it’s distracting, personally)

Hi Reyes, thanks for taking the time to feedback. Appreciate your thoughts on the title. Titles are so hard for these long conversations - it is hard to have a punchy title that encompasses the entire conversation so often we need to try and be a little specific. As I say, really appreciate your feedback though.

@@DrChatterjeeRangan Cool, Doctor Chatterjee! Totally agree with you. You are the expert. It's just that the word "Mindset", since I have read Dr C Dweck's book, holds so much more than the actual word. As I said, you are the expert and I mainly want to congratulate you for being such an amazing interviewer, interviewee and speaker. The world is a better place with what you are creating, Thank you!

This is one of the best if not the best show I’ve ever seen. I watched it and rewatched it for over 5 hours within 24 hours. Found the short version first. Just couldn’t believe that’s how it ended. Anyway as for feedback you bring out the best in each other. Have followed both of you for a while but this was your A++++++++ game. I will watch this again and again. And will look for the shows with Rangan on Toms channel. Thank you thank you thank you.

I love Tom and his passion about learning, but one thing that bugs me is that I think he is guided by the idea that everything has to come the hard way.. And you have to work your butt off to have something, which is an engraved belief in so many people that because of what they went through (all the hard work) does not want to give up that belief.

It’s good that you bring it back to practical advice. Tom is a clever/interesting guy with tonnes of interesting ideas, but does tend to talk in abstract ways. It’s good to know how/why you need to do X thing to get Y result, not just that you have to do it.

I love Tom's idea to have a big brother style diet show mainly for the sake of collecting data. I want to do a longer fast to invoke the power of my immune system but the last time fasted for 3 days my blood pressure skyrocketed into heart attack Zone and I suddenly developed a heart arrhythmia. As a longtime low carber I'm guessing I was low in potassium. I'm having a great deal of trouble finding information on this and entering the fast under medical supervision is not something that is readily available for me. I don't need to lose weight, I could lose about 10 lb without being underweight. If you need volunteers Tom I'm in! Just don't make me fat!

I enjoyed this one, but I felt it got a bit technical at points where I think parts wouldn't be as valuable or as easily understood by the average person who isn't as well versed in nutrition (such as myself). Also I think it would be worth talking about the environmental, ethical parts of diet - given this is a podcast primarily about health and wellness, our diets effect (even if it's in the long run) the wider ecosystem. Thank you for the upload!

This is being a great show but when you got on to diet I really believe you are off track. Try any of those other diets for a considerable period of time and you will find they don't work. You talk about stress in the western world. NFL quarterbacks would have a lot of stress so how does Tom Brady and Cam Newton survive on a whole plant food based diet either or both of you need to have dr. Joel Kahn a cardiologist on to explain to you why the keto diet doesn't work and many others as well as wfpb
@DrChatterjeeRangan
@DrChatterjeeRangan 4 жыл бұрын
Hey John - thanks for your feedback. I only touched on diet in response to Tom's assertion that Keto is likely to be best for most people. I am diet agnostic - I believe that whole food diets are best for health. My view is informed by by clinical experience. So, in 20 years of seeing patients - I have seen different diets work for different people both in the short term and the long term. I completely agree with you that WFPB can work for many people in the long term. I also expressed that certain diets work in the short term but I have concerns over their long term effect on health. Stress is also a massive factor. But not just 'stress' per se. How that stress is received and processed by an individual is key. Can play a role in their insulin resistance and also what kind of foods they wish to eat. I hope that clarifies some points. Thanks so much for watching and feeding back.
