Another problem with the view of orcas as uber-predators is that it completely ignores the fact orcas have culture, and that each culture is EXTREMELY restricted in terms of prey, causing policy-makers to overestimate just how much change orcas can tolerate. People assume that orcas are all the same, and that they can use a wide array of hunting methods to hunt a wide array of prey. But the truth is that no single orca, or even an entire orca population, is actually capable of using more than a tiny fraction of these tricks. Orca hunting behaviour is tightly restricted by tradition: each orca is taught how and what to hunt by its parents, and it will (in the vast majority of cases) only hunt in those specific ways for its entire life. Said tradition differs by population to population, even in cases where multiple orca populations share the same area (see the Pacific Northwest where you have 4 different populations with 4 very different eating habits: fish and squid eaters, salmon specialists, mammal specialists, and shark specialists-the last one only eats sharks much smaller than themselves) For example, the orca pod in Argentina that knows how to attack sea lions and elephant seals on shore is the only orca pod in the world that can actually hunt in this way. And they can only eat sea lions and elephant seals. Similarly, the Antarctic Type B orcas (the ones that generate waves to flip ice floes) are the only orcas in the world that can catch Weddel seals on ice, and they eat almost nothing but Weddel seals. You can insert any orca population and its hunting method: chances are, said population consumes a tiny handful of prey species. What this means is that orcas (at a population level) are unable to adapt to changes prey availability, because they have no idea that anything besides their traditional diet is edible, let alone how to bring those animals down. And orcas can't communicate with other orca populations to learn how, because each population has a separate dialect, presenting a language barrier. So, when humans eliminate the prey source for a given population of orcas, that population is a goner. The perfect example would be the Southern Resident population in Puget Sound: These orcas eat nothing but Chinook salmon, and because said salmon is in steep decline, the entire population is starving to death even though plenty of other prey exist. Orcas shouldn't be seen as one versatile predatory species, but rather a collection of incredibly specialized predatory populations on the verge of speciation.

To be fair all the stuff they are saying about the whales is also true of wolves, they are highly intelligent, playful, they care for each other, they will even adjust the packs pace to the slowest member, they will console and protect each other and tease each other, they are all invested in the pups, they cooperate and they grieve for pack members who die, they are also highly adept apex predators... so I think wolves of the sea is a perfect analogy.

There’s a movie that showed them as evil as they made jaws, ur right tho the doc isn’t very accurate, but the premise is right long line fishing vessels throw explosives in the water plus other things, there’s a documentary called “killers in Eden” it’s an unbelievable story but so many witnesses attest to it , was when whaling was rife and was a place in south Australia and the whalers an orcas worked together to take down the big whales , the orcas got the tongue an the whalers got the rest, it goes as far to say that the orcas saved drowning whalers and even swam up to the whalers house in the night and splashed around to wake him up to basically tell them they pushed a whale into the inlet...also I have a friend in Alaska an she says that orcas come every few weeks at the same time nr her house an she feeds them and even tells me of a kid who fell in the water on his way to school and an orca grabbed the kids bag an dragged him to shore, I didn’t really believe it until today after I saw an elephant chase a guy down steam it must have thought was drowning and blocked him off an pushed him to shore, I know it’s not the same animal of course but it made my friends story a lot more believable. On the sea world front they need shutting down , they are emotional creatures 😔

Orcas have never attacked a human in the wild, it's only when they're in captivity and under a lot of stress have they attacked people. I hate to agree with Liberals, because I never do, but this is one animal that shouldn't be in captivity. The Orca has very close ties to their family/pod, and it's like taking someone away from their family. These animals have emotions just like we do, and are actually very similar to elephants emotionally. Yes, intelligent animals have emotions like PTSD, just like humans do! I find it very sad to see a male Orca's dorsal fin flop to side in captivity, when in the wild it can reach heights up to 6 ft. Orcas are so majestic, there's nothing like seeing these animals in the wild and seeing how curious they are when interacting with humans and other animals like dogs. To be fair, most Orcas in captivity today were born in captivity and don't know what it's like to be in the wild. You can't just throw them back in the ocean, but the capture of wild Orcas for captivity should be prevented at all costs!

And for those born in captivity, without accepting pods, they should be transferred to ocean sanctuaries where everything is natural--waves, water, plants, and all kinds of animals, and millions of times bigger than a tiny tank (they easily swims 100+ km a day). There will be food and vicenarians looking over their health. And of course they can hunt too. And if they feel ready and want to leave the sanctuary and explore the open ocean, let them.

It's funny when you think about it. The word orca after all has a variety of meanings depending on the language & none of them directly mean killer. There's orc, calf, and also to be associated with Orcus, a God of the Underworld. You can thank old-time colonial era shippers and whalers, ironically, who saw orcas (transients) either eating from whale corpses or killing harpooned whales for the dub "whale killer" or "assassin whale" or nowadays killer whale.

It's not that the stuff about "stealing" fish and tearing sea lions apart isn't true, it's just that that isn't the full story. Ecology has shown over and over that removing apex predators generally has negative effects for the entire food chain, because everything co evolved for any given environment, so until the environment changes, causing extinctions, the way things are before humans got there is pretty much the optimal way to maximise biodiversity.

If they do i prefer to die too. The world WITHOUT ORCAS ❤️ WILL BE A DISASTER. THEY ARE NECESSARY FOR THE ECOSYSTEM OF THE OCEANS APART FROM BEING A GREAT JOY FOR US HUMANS AND THERE ARE MANY THINGS WE CAN LEARN FROM ORCAS. AND AS WE ARE IMMORTALS, OUR CONCIOUSNESS NEVER DIES I PREFER TO LEAVE THIS PLANET, IF THE ORCAS GET EXTINCT. HOPE NEVER.

Orcas never killed a man in the wild. Only while they were captive. Remember that. I believe it is better than human behaviour.

Anyone that hasn't heard about Luna grab some Kleenex and check it out. Also just found out about Notch the dolphin. They seek a connection to us. We should provide it, not avoid becoming their friends.

Not habituating them to humans is for their own safety. Not everyone is understanding of orca behavior and getting them used to humans can and has been deadly for cetaceans. Not to mention we can spread disease and viruses to them.

New boats should have some sort of jet to push the boat instead of an open prop. Make it safer for the animals that like to go up to boats. You could say your dog or your cat is a deadly predator. That doesn't mean people have a bad opinion of them. Every animals hunts it's food. A squirrel hunts for nuts and MY Tomatoes. Cats hunt mice. Maybe the mice think the cat is a vicious predator. Orcas hunt various other animals. Maybe a sea lion thinks Orcas are vicious predators. Humans don't think that. They don't attack humans. They are curious about humans. They swim with humans all the time. They play with humans a lot. It's just a giant dolphin. Who thinks dolphins are vicious?

They're far from the worst killers on the planet. If they're call killer whales, what should homosapiens be called?

Often people ask why orcas are coming to humans/boat/etc. I think those are some of the dumbest questions. Why are humans get on a boat looking for orcas, wanting to swim/snorkel with them, etc. What separates them from humans is that, humans massively killed orcas and cetaceans and almost drove them to extinction; what have they done to us?
@CarbonGlassMan2 жыл бұрын
@@FreeHKer I don't know what the problem is with calling orcas killer whales? That's what sailors called them when they discovered them because they killed whales. They are very large, almost whale like. They may very well have been thought to have been whales in the beginning and since whales don't kill other whales, or even kill anything larger than fish, these where a unique whale as the sailors saw them. They were whales that killed other whales, hence the name "killer whale". Native Americans are called Indians because the sailors thought they landed in India, not on the American continent. They're still called Indians even though they're not technically Indians.

@@FreeHKer Orcas can't be offended by what we call them. There is no need for people to be offended on behalf of an animal.

Sure orca's are totally miss understood. So are sharks miss understood and so are wolf's and bears. What's there to miss unstand about them. They just want to eat what ever they can. There's nothing to miss understood about that.

I've never had a problem with the term "killer whale", as I always thought of it as meaning that they are really good at killing (which is definitely true, given their apex predator status) instead of meaning that they are brutal murderers. do people actually think this way?
@ragzaugustus5 жыл бұрын
Fortunately, I don't know them as that, we don't call them a mistranslated version of the Spanish name in my native tongue, so just call them Orcas and that'll fix it.

Either is fine to use. Researchers and marine biologist dont typically use the term 'orca' as it is not the given common name. 'orca' comes from their scientific name 'Orciuns Orca'.
