Very Good Analysis -- As a customer I bought SGB purely for those reasons you explained as those were very very attractive. Now, it is becoming liability to Government should have been known to experts in FINANCE MINISTRY .. Gold demand NOT going to come down -- Situation in 2024 is same as 2015 as far as Gold demand is concerned -- Will Government IMPORT more physical gold and incur huge Custom duty loss ?. The idea of GOLD BOND Vs Physical Gold still holds good .. I really did not understand the rationale behind cutting down on issuance of New SGBs .. Is it knee jerk reaction immediate payout liability ?. Please note India alwasys remaiend GOLD loving country for many years .. GOLD as a Safe heaven will continue . IPO on SGB reduction will incerase the demand for physical gold ..

The duty cut on gold import is not to plug the smuggling of gold into India. It is because SGB started for redemption and RBI have shell down huge amount every quarter for Nest 7.5 years. Those invested Rs 500000 in late 2015 would have got Rs 100000 by way of interest for 8 Years plus Rs.100000 LTCG exemption and reaped Rs 600000 returns. In total, investors have received Rs Rs 1300000.

Great report. Clearly presented. I am amazed at the stupidity of this this Govt (read Finance Minsiter). To save 165 Cr they will lose 28000 Cr of lost revenue on account of reduced duties. Dumb beyond words. Modi hai to ye bhi mumkin hai. 😅

No one will sell SGB in secondary market. Golden goose has become golden noose to govt.

I think RBI should trade in gold and hoard a lot of it when cheap, and sell when prices are high, give those capital gains to govt, like they do with the dollar reserves. And thereby, also keep gold price stable, and not appreciate, and make it unattractive as investment.

Govt cannot control gold prices beyond a limit. Only variable is Tax. Unlike Currency its not made out of thin air. Its a valuable commodity across the world.
